Opis:
In flotation production, the visual surface information of the flotation foam reflects the flotation effects, which are closely related to the flotation conditions and directly reflect the degree of mineralization of the foam layer. In this study, it was proposed a novel and efficient segmentation algorithm to extract the edge information of slime bubbles, as the boundaries are typically blurred and difficult to segment, due to the slime bubbles sticking to each other in the slime flotation foam image. First, the improved clustering algorithm and image morphology operation were used to extract the edges of the foam spots. Second, the image morphological operations were used as a starting point to look around the foam edge points. The pseudo-edge points were then removed using a region and spatial removal algorithm. Finally, the foam edges were extracted using the double-point directed expansion algorithm. A new criterion was proposed for segmentation effect determination based on the particularity of the segmented object. The feasibility and effectiveness of the foam segmentation method were investigated by comparative experiments. The experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm could obtain the foam surface properties more accurately and provide effective guidance for flotation production.

Opis:
Nowadays, healthcare and medical education is qualified by test scores and competitiveness. This article considers its quality in terms of improving the moral competence of future healthcare providers. Objectives. Examining the relevance of moral competence in medico-clinical decision-making despite the paradigm shift and discussing the up-to-date findings on healthcare students (Polish sample). Design and method. N=115 participants were surveyed with a standard Moral Competence Test to examine how their moral competence development was affected by the learning environment and further important factors. Results. The sample allowed the identification of a regress in moral competence during students’ pre-clinical curriculum, and progress during their clinical curriculum. A gender-related bias, a segmentation effect, and a pronunciation effect were noticed. Explanations. Scholarly literature usually reports a linear decrease of medical students’ C-scores resulting from, e.g., competitive trends in education. We identified such trends in terms of gender-specific competitive tactics. Religious and ethical affiliations were discussed to explain the unexpected gender bias and the related segmentation and pronunciation effects. The findings can be regarded as predictive for similar developments in educational institutions regardless of cultural contexts as the sample examined in this article represents medical education in a country facing a transition from a non-competitive to competitive tertiary education model, and between presecular and monocultural to secular and pluralist social ethics.

Opis:
Segmentation of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a process of assigning tissue class labels to voxels. One of the main sources of segmentation error is the partial volume effect (PVE) which occurs most often with low resolution images - with large voxels, the probability of a voxel containing multiple tissue classes increases. We propose a multistage algorithm for segmenting MRI images with a mid-stage of recognizing the PVE voxels. The information about PVE regions added to other voxels features extracted from the image can increase the overall accuracy of the segmentation. In our methods we have utilize a classification approach based on approximate decision reducts derived from the data mining paradigm of the theory of rough sets. An approximate reduct is an irreducible subset of features, which enables to classify decision concepts with a satisfactory degree of accuracy in the training data. The ensembles of best found reducts trained for appropriate approximation degrees are applied to detection of the PVE and performing the segmentation.

Opis:
While gender-based differences in consumer behavior have been previously investigated within the context of gender-neutral or unisex retailers, men’s behavior in women’s retailers remains largely unexplored. Furthermore, most studies frame the retail environment as a passive platform through which essential gender differences yield setting-specific bifurcated behavior, and do not address the role the commercial establishment and men’s shopping habits play in gender identity formation and maintenance. To address this gap, we analyzed men’s behavior in women’s retailers using interactionist and social constructionist theories of sex/gender. Data were collected through non-participatory observation at a series of large, enclosed shopping malls in South-Western Ontario, Canada and analyzed thematically. We found that men tend to actively avoid women’s retailers or commercial spaces that connote femininity, while those who enter said spaces display passivity, aloofness, or reticence. We suggest the dominant cultural milieu that constitute hegemonic masculinity- disaffiliation with femininity, an accentuation of heterosexuality, and a prioritization of homosocial engagement-nform the dialectical relationship between individual and institutional gender practice that manifests through consumption.
