Opis:
Three sediment cores (Loopsoo, Tihu, Prassi) from Hiiumaa Island (Estonia) were investigated using diatoms, lithological proxies, magnetic susceptibility, geochronological dates and incorporated with the previously studied Kõivasoo site, aiming to reconstruct the development of the island and shoreline changes during the Litorina Sea and the Limnea Sea. The highest level of the Litorina Sea shoreline near Kõivasoo is at 27.6 m a.s.l., and it occurred during the Initial Litorina Sea. Within the Litorina Sea transgression, 7800 cal yr BP, relative sea level reached 24.9 m a.s.l. at Kõivasoo, 24.1 m a.s.l. at Loopsoo, 23.6 m a.s.l. at Tihu, and 21.5 m a.s.l. at Prassi. Kõivasoo became isolated from the sea about 8500 cal yr BP, Loopsoo between 7100 and 6800 cal yr BP, Tihu around 4800 cal yr BP, and Prassi about 2500 cal yr BP. Presently gained data from Hiiumaa Island confirm that the Litorina Sea regressed consistently during the last 8000 years due to progressively declining isostatic rebound. The present study is also illustrated by 3-dimensional palaeogeographic maps of the Hiiumaa Island development.

southern Baltic Sea
Opis:
In the area of the southern Baltic Sea, the largest and most violent changes in water level took place in Late Glacial and Early Holocene, during the period between 13.0-8.5 ka BP. These changes depended on the varied glacio-isostatic movements between the northern and southern parts of the Baltic Sea, the glacio-eustatic increase in the ocean level and the closing or opening of the connection between the Baltic Sea basin with the ocean. During the Late Glacial and Early Holocene, the sea level changed within an amplitude as wide as 25-27 m. In some extreme cases, the sea level could have fallen at a rate of about 100-300 mm/a, the sea level rise rate reaching up to about 40-45 mm/a. In Late Glacial and Early Holocene, there were three transgressions: during 12.0-11.2, 11.0-10.3 (the Baltic Ice Lake) and 10.2-9.2 ka BP (the Yoldia Sea and the Ancylus Lake). There were also three regressions, setting on 11.2, 10.3 and 9.2 ka BP. During regressions, depending on the real drainage rate and the local gradient of the bottom inclination, the land possibly grew at a rate of 0.3 to 4 km per year. During transgressions, rate of shoreline migration could reach in some cases up to 150-200 m per year. These processes took place on the surface of the sea bottom currently located at the depth of c. 55 to 25 m below sea level and from 30 to 60 km away from the present-day southern coast of the Baltic Sea. Rapid changes of shoreline position are recorded in progradational barrier structures and in the erosion surfaces of the glacial till and glacio-marine clays.

Opis:
W późnym plejstocenie i wczesnym holocenie, między 13,0 i 8,5 tys. lat BP, poziom wody trzykrotnie wzrastał i opadał, a zakres wahań dochodził do 25-27 m. Poziom wody obniżał się w skrajnych przypadkach w tempie do ok. 100-300 mm/rok, a tempo wzrostu dochodziło do ok. 35-45 mm/rok. W późnym boreale, ok. 8,5 tys. lat BP, Bałtyk uzyskał stałe połączenie z oceanem na poziomie niższym od obecnego o ok. 28 m. Do początku okresu atlantyckiego poziom morza wzrósł do ok. 21 m poniżej współczesnego poziomu morza (p.p.m.). W okresie 8,0-7,0 tys. lat BP poziom morza wzrósł do 10 m p.p.m., w średnim tempie ok. 10 mm/rok. Do końca okresu atlantyckiego poziom morza wzrósł do 2,5 m p.p.m., a tempo wzrostu zmalało do ok. 2,5 mm/rok. W pierwszym tysiącleciu okresu subborealnego poziom wody wzrósł do ok. 1,1-1,3 m, a do końca tego okresu do ok. 0,6-0,7 m niższego niż współczesny. Linia brzegowa południowego Bałtyku w późnym plejstocenie i wczesnym holocenie kilkukrotnie uległa szybkim i znacznym przemieszczeniom.

Opis:
According to their origin, geomorphology and hydrology, the fresh/brackish-water bays and coastal lakes of the Southern Baltic coast can be treated as lagoons. They developed at the time of and as a result of the Atlantic (Litorina) transgression of the Southern Baltica. There are many publications about the origin and evolution of the lagoons and lakes along the Polish coast of the Southern Baltic (e.g. Przybyłowska-Lange, 1973a, b, 1974, 1979, 1981; Zaborowska, 1977; Zachowicz, 1977, 1985; Wypych, 1980a, b; Zachowicz et al., 1982; Bogaczewicz-Adamczak, Miotk, 1985a, b; Dąbrowski et al., 1985; Zachowicz, Zaborowska, 1985; Borówka et al., 2001a, b, 2002). Nevertheless, the origin of the lagoons has not been fully explained. In the light of present-day information the results of earliest investigations often need to be reinterpreted. The aim of this work was the correlation of the published and unpublished pollen and diatom diagrams from Late Pleistocene and Holocene sediments of the Southern Baltic lagoons, and their relation with radiocarbon dating. The pollen and diatom diagrams from the area of north-east Germany and the Curonian Lagoon (Kabailiene., 1999; Jahns, 2000; Kaiser et al., 2000; Endtmann, 2002; Bitinas et al., 2002) have been used for comparison. For the palynological sites, the local pollen assemblage zones (L PAZ) have been identified according to Janczyk-Kopikowa (1987). Comparison of the biostratigraphical data allowed us to define the approach time of the formation of the lagoons in their present-day position on the coast as well as to determine the periods of an accelerated sea-level rise and increased frequency of storm surges (so-called marine transgression phases) when the investigated areas had been under the direct influence of the sea. Such influences are visible about 7000, 6000, 5000 and 4000 years BP. This period of marine influences, about 1000-year long, corresponds very well to the same period of climate oscillations mentioned by Stuiver and Braziunas (1993), Stuiver et al. (1995) and Chapman and Shackelton (2000). The influence of the sea in the Post-Litorina period was associated mainly with the inflow of sea water through more or less developed barriers, so they are not synchronous.

Tragophylloceras cf. loscombi (Sowerby) has been found in the Kaszewy 1 borehole (central Poland), in the Upper Pliensbachian strata (Margaritatus Zone, Subnodosus Subzone), assigned to the Drzewica Formation. Hitherto, all ammonite finds in the epicontinental Lower Jurassic in Poland have been restricted to Western Pomerania (NW Poland). This find points to a wider extent of the transgressive event occurring in the late Margaritatus Zone, following widespread regression at the beginning of this zone. Rapid and pronounced sea level changes in the early Late Pliensbachian confirms the hypothesis linking these changes with glacioeustasy.

Opis:
At a glance, progress in palaeontology and eustatic reconstructions in the past decade permits to prove or to disprove the possible dependence of Palaeozoic brachiopod generic diversity dynamics on global sea-level changes. However, the available diversity curve is of much lower resolution than the eustatic curve. This problem can be resolved by decreasing the resolution of the latter. The other restriction linked to the chronostratigraphical incompatibility of the available data allows to focus on the Middle Palaeozoic only. A series of mass extinctions and other biotic crises in the Silurian-Devonian does not allow to interpret correctly the results of direct comparison of the brachiopod generic diversity dynamics with global sea-level changes. With the available data, it is only possible to hypothesize that the eustatic control was not playing a major part in diversity dynamics of Middle Palaeozoic brachiopods. The resolution of the stratigraphic ranges of Palaeozoic brachiopods should be increased significantly, and these ranges should be plotted against the most up-to-date geologic time scale. Until this task will be achieved, it is impossible to judge about the existence of any dependence (either full or partial) of the Palaeozoic brachiopod diversity dynamics on global sea-level changes.

Opis:
Sea level changes provoked by multiple forcings that act in a wide range of time scales attracted human interest for several millennia. However, the bases of modern understanding of this phenomenon and its quantitative expression were achieved during the last two centuries. At present, owing to a series of altimetric observations made by 4 satellite missions in the last 30years, the mean sea level (MSL) rise calculated for the whole Earth is estimated to be 3-3.5 mm per year, with at least half of this value being attributable to human-induced climate warming. About 125,000 years ago, during the last interglacial (Eemian) that was warmer than the current period, the MSL was about 5 m higher than today. Approximately 116,000 years ago, the sea level began to decline as a result of gradual cooling of the climate that led to glaciation, which in the Northern Hemisphere had a climax at 20-30 ka BP. The transition from the last glacial maximum to the current warm period, covering the last 20,000years, includes the transfer of about 35 106 km3 of water from melting ice caps of the Northern Hemisphere to the oceanic reservoir, causing an increase in sea level of about 130 m. The average rate of MSL rise was about 10 mm per year, although over the last seven millennia, the MSL rising rate dropped to about 1-1.5 mm per year. These changes are considered representative of the natural variability of the Earth's climate system over the past 2 million years.

Opis:
The studies were conducted on the barrier coast located in the eastern part of Pomeranian Bay. The main study goal was to present the development of the barrier coast between Niechorze and Kołobrzeg, with particular emphasis on the impact of sea level changes in the Baltic Sea. Based on collected data, three basic groups of deposits were identified in the study area: barrier basement deposits, barrier deposits, and Rega River outlet cone deposits. To recreate the barrier development stages, sea level changes in the eastern part of Pomeranian Bay for the last 8,500years were reconstructed. At that time, the coast migrated to the south. The first barriers in the study area appeared around 7,500years b2k. The main factors conditioning the barrier coast development in were climate changes, sea level changes, barrier basement morphology and lithology, as well as the amount of supplied sedimentary material. The reconstructed stages of barrier development show that there are sections of different barrier types (landward-migrating to accreted barrier, landward-migrating barrier through accreted barrier to landward-migrating barrier, landward-migrating barrier) in the study area.

In Ordovician times the Łysogóry Region (northern Holy Cross Mts.) was located in the marginal part of Baltica, thus, the sea-level history reconstructed for this palaeocontinent appears to be a good background for discussing relationships between sea-level changes and the studied sedimentary record. However, some stratigraphic gaps, e.g. in the Lower and Middle Ordovician parts of the considered succession are probably due to regional tectonic activity. The upper Middle and Upper Ordovician sedimentary facies of the Łysogóry Region show good correlation with the Late Llanvirn-Caradoc Highstand Interval followed by the Ashgill Lowstand Interval in Baltica (Nielsen, 2004). The most conspicuous facies changes in the Ordovician of the considered region seem to be coeval with 3rd order eustatic events recognized on the sea-level curve from Baltoscandia.

Opis:
By comparison with the Lower Cretaceous of central and SE Poland, that of NW Poland (the Pomeranian, Szczecin, and Mogilno-Łódź troughs) has scarce biostratigraphic data. But, despite the lack of Lower Cretaceous exposure in the NW Polish Lowlands, borehole data, including borehole-cores and geophysical logs, allow analysis of complete successions. We refine the stratigraphic units using parallel studies of ammonites, microfauna and calcareous nannoplankton collected from the same intervals, and by correlating age-defined intervals with geophysical logs. Ostracod zones F to A are documented by the presence of ostracod assemblages representing the interval between the Upper Tithonian (ostracod zone F) and the lower part of the Upper Berriasian (ostracod zones E to A). The fragmentary and poorly preserved ammonites allowed only for distinguishing the uppermost Middle and Upper Berriasian (Ryazanian), while the informal subdivisions from the central part of the basin could not be identified unequivocally. Nannoplankton recognized in the succession analysed was very rare due to shallow marine facies of the strata. Only one nannoplankton zone was recognized in the lower part of the succession studied: the CC2 Stradneria crenulata Zone (uppermost Middle and Upper Berriasian and lowermost Valanginian). An additional study only on nannoplankton enabled recognition of certain boreal taxa typical of the BC2 zone of the Uppermost Riazanian. Valaginian ammonites occur in core material located closer to the central part of the trough. Some planktonic foraminiferal species indicate the Lower Aptian. Some Upper Cretaceous nannoplankton zones were also recognized: the CC9 Eiffellithus turriseiffeli (Uppermost Albian to Lower Cenomanian) and UC0, UC1-2 and UC3 zones which correspond to the Upper Albian and Lower as well as Middle Cenomanian. The sequence stratigraphic interpretation was based on geophysical logs with the application of gamma-ray, neutron-gamma, spontaneous potential and resistivity logging, as well as caliper logging. These studies allowed recognition and correlation of sedimentary sequences within the part of the sedimentary basin analysed, characterized by a similar cyclic pattern of geological phenomena described using depositional sequences as in the central and SE part of the Polish Basin. Third-order depositional sequences with maximum flooding surfaces were distinguished. Effective correlation of depositional cycles with biostratigraphy and with the global sea level curve was demonstrated for several boundaries, confirming the applicability of this method for the Polish part of the the Central-European Basin. Other boundaries recognized that are not correlatable and shifted relative to Haq’s curve may reflect autogenous factors (e.g., local tectonics) overlapping with the global changes controlled by allogenic processes

Fluvial sediments in the Chłapowo cliff section were studied in order to reconstruct their palaeoflow conditions and stratigraphical position. Lithofacies, textural and palaeohydraulic analyses as well as luminescence dating were performed so as to achieve the aim of study. Sedimentary successions were identified as a record of point bar cycles. The fluvial environment probably functioned during the latest Saalian, shortly after the retreat of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet. Discharge outflow was directed to the northwest. The river used the older fluvioglacial valley and probably was directly connected to the Eem Sea. Good preservation and strong aggradation of point-bar cycles were related to a rapid relative base level rise. The meandering river sediments recognised showed responses to climate and sea level changes as illustrated by stratigraphical, morphological and sedimentological features of the strata described. The present study also revealed several insights into proper interpretation of meandering fluvial successions, in which the most important were: specific lithofacies assemblage of GSt (St, Sp) → Sl → SFrc → Fm (SFr) and related architectural elements: channel/sandy bedforms CH/SB → lateral accretion deposits LA → floodplain fines with crevasse splays FF (CS); upward-fining grain size and decreasing content of denser heavy minerals; estimated low-energy flow regime with a mean depth of 1.6–3.3 m, a Froude number of 0.2–0.4 and a sinuosity of 1.5.

Opis:
We describe the biostratigraphy and palaeoecology of the Dalichai Formation based on calcareous nannofossils from the Guydagh section in the western Alborz Mountains, north-west Iran. The nannofossils are moderately to well-preserved, and 25 species belonging to 8 genera have been distinguished, representing the Early Berriasian to Late Hauterivian ages according to the CC1-CC4b biozones of Sissingh (1977). The recorded nannofossils are generally Tethyan and cosmopolitan, while the record of Nannoconus inornatus, a Boreal species, at the top of the section reflects the water mass connection between the Boreal and Tethyan domains during the Late Hauterivian. The records of Nannoconus spp., Watznaueria spp., and Rhagodiscus asper show that the sedimentary basin of the Dalichai Formation was located at low lati tudes of the Tethyan realm with warm surface waters. Palaeoecologically, the findings represent a marine transgression and increasing depth, and the palaeoenvironmental conditions change from low-high mesotrophic (shown by the dominance of W. britannica) to oligotrophic (from the dominance of nannoconids), r- to K-strategy of life (from the dominance of nannoconids), and became increasingly stable (shown by the reduction of W. britannica) towards the top of the section.

The relationships between the interior dynamics of our planet and global sea level can be unravelled when plate-tectonic reconstructions are available for the entire Earth. A review of global tectonics reveals significant deficiencies in our understanding of the geodynamic evolution of the Pacific (Panthalassa or Proto-Pacific) during the Cambrian-Jurassic time-span. This particular, but major, shortcoming presents a true challenge for modern geoscientists, who are encouraged to produce a detailed plate-tectonic reconstruction of the Pacific for the pre-Cretaceous in order to advance our understanding of Phanerozoic sea-level change. A set of approaches, including geological/geophysical modelling, investigation of accretionary prisms, palaeobiogeographical studies, and careful examination of eustatic sea-level changes, are proposed that will help geoscientists tackle the challenge of understanding how Pacific geodynamics affected global sea level during the Phanerozoic.

Opis:
Cretaceous limestones from the basement of the Neogene Mut Basin are strongly sculptured by borings, including mainly clionid sponge borings Entobia ispp., bivalve borings Gastrochaenolites torpedo and G. lapidicus, the polychaete boring Caulostrepsis taeniola and Meandropolydora isp. The borings are replaced subsequently; as a rule the succession begins with C. taeniola and terminates with Entobia ispp. The discussed boring producers display various tolerance for light, energy and depth conditions, hence their succession may reflect environmental changes, related to marine transgression, proceeded upon rocky coast area. Since such a coast could be devoid of sedimentation for a long time, the possible reconstruction of relative sea-level change may be inferred exclusively from nonsedimentological criteria i.e. from the succession of endolithic borings. Therefore the borings may be employed as useful tool in sequence stratigraphic procedure.

Opis:
The lower Llandovery black radiolarian cherts and shales of the Bardo Formation are interpreted as transgressive to highstand deposits produced by the marine flooding initiated in latest Ordovician time (persculptus graptolite zone). This formation was divided into the Rembów radiolarian chert Member and Zbrza shale Member. The sedimentary record of the Rembów Member was folded due to the late Caledonian tectonic activity. The accumulation of the radiolarian cherts was influenced by an upwelling system generated by the SE trade winds, which were active along the southern margin of the southern Holy Cross Mountains.
