    Opis:
    To understand transcultural education in societies with children from many cultural backgrounds, this essay looks at socialization in colonial-hierarchical settings and uses the analysis of cultural impositions to discuss consequences and needs in present-day immigration societies. The analysis begins with an historical approach to intercultural education. In a first section, focusing on British as well as French and Dutch colonies it analyses memories as reflected in life-writings of colonized resident children in schools run by in-migrant – “third-culture” – imperial administrators and teachers – a remote-control education. Present-day constructs of mono-cultural national values may be equally remote to the life-worlds of many-cultured societies. The second part traces the migration of imperially-educated students and working adults to the (former) colonizer core with India-to-England (late 19th to early 20th century) and Suriname-to-The Netherlands (1960s-2000s) as examples. In a third section, as an exemplary case for today’s multicultural cities, I discuss French-speaking university students from North and West Africa in Paris, i.e. migrant students facing a national/nation-centred/nationalist educational system. In a concluding part, I will interpret present-day Canada’s educational practices in terms of transcultural socialization. How did children and adolescents connect the "facts" learned in educational institutions to their everyday lives -- if they did so at all?

    The French Revolution sought to discover the way to view freedom. At the end of the Revolution, they proclaimed the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. In French society, these fruits of the Revolution were con-sidered something sacred. Paradoxically, in a country that did so much to cleanse public life of religious factors, the same state has begun to create a religion of the state. All of the process after the Revolution, in particular, the Law of 1905 regarding the separation between the state and the church, has fortified the idea of secularism in French society. This process of the state was introduced in the schools because they wished to construct a society which was entirely secular which believed in the values of the Republic. They therefore made divisions between the public schools and the private ones. The public schools had a secular and a national character. The substantial difference be-tween the schools was that in the public schools, the teaching of religion as a separate subject was expelled and the religious issues in the teaching curricu-lum was reduced to the minimum. It appeared only as a background in the his-torical issues. Commenting on the Charter of Secularism, I seek to respond to the ques-tion – what happened which caused them to introduce this Charter of Secular-ism in the schools? We find the first response in the actions of the young peo-ple who want to be respected along with having their religious systems respect-ed. Such problems arose when the French introduced the prohibition of reli-gious symbols. However, the prohibitions did not resolve the problem. They therefore invented and introduced the Charter of Secularism of the French School. This is a kind of new way of presenting the idea of secularism to the students. The Charter was implemented as a way of reinforcing the prohibitions which had been previously introduced. It repeats the ideas which have been presented in the schools since the end of the French Revolution. Looking at the Charter, we have the impression that it is simply a repetition of the same phrases – that it is pure theory that has nothing in common with the reality. However, the French Ministry of Education always creates new initiatives which promote the presence of secularism in the schools. Unfortunately how-ever, they do not look at the problems of the young people. They don’t want to understand their identities and especially, their religious identities.

    Celem naukowych rozważań o człowieku w kontekście kształcenia i rozwoju jednostki (u progu współczesności) jest prezentacja różnych obszarów badań dotyczących szkolnictwa w Polsce i za granicą w wyznaczonych okresach historycznych. Człowiek, stanowiący oś konstrukcyjną refleksji nad kwestiami edukacji, zaprezentowany zostanie w orbicie nowożytnych pojęć, kategorii i wartości, z których wykrystalizowały się nowoczesne oraz współczesne systemy nauczania. Całość naukowego dyskursu zostanie zawarta w dwóch częściach. Będą one ukazywać kolejno: a) źródła myślenia nowoczesnego o kształceniu oraz realizację nowożytnych ideałów w edukacji przełomu osiemnastego i dziewiętnastego wieku, a następnie b) nowe drogi edukacji w okresie międzywojnia w perspektywie badań nad polskim szkolnictwem we Francji. W pierwszej części artykułu autorzy będą poszukiwać źródeł nowoczesnego myślenia o kształceniu ludzkiej jednostki, począwszy od starożytnych rozważań filozofów o doskonałości duszy i ciała a skończywszy na dążeniu w stronę człowieka wieku świateł. Jednostka ludzka u progu współczesności zyskała wolność, niezależność intelektualną i nowy potencjał rozwoju, dzięki czemu znalazła się w centrum refleksji naukowej oraz filozoficznej. Zainteresowanie człowiekiem oraz jego rozwojem stało się zalążkiem nowoczesnej myśli pedagogicznej. Materiałem egzemplifikacyjnym tej części artykułu staną się źródła, które ukazują obraz szkolnictwa u schyłku Rzeczpospolitej. W drugiej części artykułu naukowej eksploracji podlegać będą zagadnienia nowych ścieżek edukacji po roku 1918 w Polsce i za granicą – zwłaszcza tam, gdzie Polacy naj-liczniej emigrowali, tzn. we Francji. Ponad półmilionowa kolonia polska we Francji stała się w analizowanym okresie jednym z najważniejszych składników polonii zagranicznej. Polska emigracja przynajmniej od połowy lat dwudziestych XX w. stanowiła grupę znaczącą, zarówno z racji swej liczebności, jak i pozycji w całej populacji cudzoziemskiej we Francji. Badając zawiłe problemy polskiego szkolnictwa i nauczania języka polskiego, autorzy przyjęli za punkt wyjścia to, co już dotąd na ten temat napisano we Francji i w Polsce, uzupełnili jednak obecny stan wiedzy o analizę dokumentów jeszcze niezbadanych lub niepublikowanych.
    The aim of the academic discussion about man in terms of education and development of an individual (at the beginning of the modern times) is to present different research areas in schooling in Poland and abroad in the given historical periods. Man, being the elemental axis of reflection on the educational issues, will be presented in the orbit of modern notions, categories and values, which gave rise to modern and contemporary systems of education. The whole of the academic discourse will be contained in two parts, presenting consecutively: the origins of modern thought about education and fulfilling modern-times ideas in education of the turn of the 18th and the 19th centuries, and then new ways of education in the interwar period in the perspective of research into the Polish educational system in France. In the first part of the article, the authors will look for the origins of modern thinking about developing human individual, beginning with considerations of ancient philosophers concerning the perfection of body and soul – heading towards the man of the Age of Light. Human individual, on the verge of modern times, gained freedom, intellectual independence and new potential for development, due to which, man found himself in the centre of scientific and philosophical reflection. The interest in man and his development was the germ of modern pedagogical thought. The second part of the article will explore the issues and matters of new ways of education after 1918 in Poland and abroad, in places where Poles immigrated in biggest numbers, namely, France. Polish colony in France, counting over half a million, in the analyzed period, was the major constituent of the Polish community abroad. Polish emigration constituted an important group, due to its population, as well as its importance among foreign nations in France in the mid 20s. Studying complex problems of Polish education and Polish language teaching, we took as the starting point what had been published about it in France and Poland, broadening our knowledge by analysis of documents which have not yet been research or published.
