Opis:
In this paper, the author deals with the saving profiles of households in relation to the perception of their subjectively preferred incomes. The author shows that household savings are influenced by a behavioral attitude concerning the evaluation of one’s household income. The variable used in the analysis of household behavior is an income preference ratio constructed by the author. This variable is computed as a ratio of the subjectively preferred income as declared by the household head to the current disposable income of the household. An analysis of the income preference ratio has been conducted with respect to the age and gender of the household head. It shows that women as heads of households generally have lower expectations regarding preferred income and that income preferences vary according to the age of the household head, being the highest at a young age. Household savings are correlated with the level of current disposable income and income preferences. Positive household savings can even be observed among households with very low incomes. Savings rise significantly in households with income higher than “sufficient” and are very high in households with “good” and “very good” income. The results of the analysis show that the income preferences of Polish households tend toward higher income levels than the actual level of disposable income. The propensity to save suggests that the financial condition of Polish households may be better than subjectively perceived and declared by the household head. The subjectively preferred incomes of households positively influence household saving profiles, with the exception of households with “insufficient” incomes. The research is based on 2004 data for 32,000 households from Household Budget Surveys for Poland.

Prices of thermal and electric energy delivered to households are constantly increasing, and it will probably not change over the next few years. Due to this fact, people had been forced to find different ways to reduce costs of buying energy. The paper contains description of the most popular systems which are already in use from many years and some innovative systems which are implemented now, or which may be probably installed in nearly future – for example: internal combustion engines, Stirling engines, proton exchange membrane fuel cells, gas turbines, engines with Rankine cycle, etc. Each of mentioned above appliances is necessary to create CHP system which advantages and disadvantages are also described. In this publication, the most promising units have been compared to show their performance, flexibility, profitability and range of using ability. In this paper, approximate money and energy savings that may occur by using modern solutions compared to traditional systems are also shown. As always, during design and development of this kind of devices, there are a lot of problems related to various issues. Main problems and potential solutions have been also presented in this article. In summary further research, directions are suggested due to improve performance of this kind of systems.

Opis:
Economists believe the interest rate is an interim agent for savings, which promotes the people to lose their present consumption continuously. So, this study also assumed that there was a relationship between the interest rate and savings. Based on that, the objective of this study was to explore the interest rate dynamics on savings in Sri Lank over the period of 1977 to 2017. In this study annual time series data for the following variables: interest rate, savings, and gross domestic product were used, and the Johansen and Juselius cointegration technique was employed to test the cointegration relationship between the variables. In this study, interest rate was considered as key independent variable and savings was dependent variable. Both Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) and Kwiatkowski – Phillips – Schmidt – Shin tests were employed to test the stationarity of the variables. In terms of these tests, all variable were stationary at first difference level. Furthermore, interest rate and savings had the long run relationship and there was short-run causality between interest rate and savings which was confirmed by the results of Vector Error Correction model (VECM). Therefore, the interest rate had long - run and short - run relationship on the savings in Sri Lanka. Finally, this study recommends the policy makers should consider interest rate friendly policy to boost the savings in Sri Lanka.

Opis:
Pakistan has a population of over 199 million and total road network of approximately 264,400 kilometers that serve about 16.2 million vehicles of all types. According to WHO estimates, there were approximately 30,000 annual Road Crash Fatalities (RCF) in Pakistan in year 2010. Work zone crashes account for significant proportion of all traffic crashes in Pakistan due to higher crash rate as compared to other parts of the highway network. Highway work zone is referred to road area where highway construction, maintenance or activity related to utility maintenance takes place. Workers in highway work zone are exposed to a variety of hazards and face risk of injury and death from construction equipment as well as passing motor vehicles. Safety measures and better understanding of risks involved while moving through the work zone have significant effects on the overall safety climate at work zones. Mismanaged work zone traffic increases the travel time delays, safety issues, vehicle operating costs (VOC) and other associated costs. Performance measures for the work zone traffic management includes user costs (travel time delay, crash cost, VOC), incident response and clearance time, queue length and community complaint. Different work Zone Traffic Management methodologies are being practiced worldwide and extensive research has been carried out at international level on country specific highway work zone safety but in Pakistan very few studies have been carried out on highway work zones. This research aims to critically analyze the impacts of the different Work Zone Traffic Management methods and recommend the best option for Expressways/Motorways in Pakistan. For the purpose of research, the author has selected a section of Motorway (M-2). Two different work zone traffic management methods are being followed in rehabilitation of M-2 .i.e. Parallel/Adjacent Method and Median Cross-Over Method. Performance measures selected for purpose of analysis are Travel Time Delay, Crash Cost (Safety) and VOC and data collected on section of M-2. After critical analysis, it is concluded that Parallel / Adjacent Method results in lesser Travel Time delay and lesser VOC due to higher operating speeds and thus has higher savings, whereas Median Cross over Methods yield more Crash Cost savings. Keeping in view the driving habits / skills, poor maintenance of vehicles in Pakistan and risk of fatal accidents involved in parallel/adjacent method, median cross over method is preferred.

Emergency departments are costly to maintain. They remain open every hour of the year to provide care for those who need it, when they need it. Therefore, emergency departments are a crucial resource for any modern society, and no sensible person would want to close them, despite their cost. However, the view held by many, that the care provided in an emergency department is excessively costly, is just plain wrong. When our doctors’ and our specialty’s performance is viewed objectively, it becomes clear that emergency physicians have become crucial agents of cost savings. Therefore, EPs have earned the right to proudly “re-brand” themselves not as high-cost care providers, but as indispensable, money-savers in any nation’s health care enterprise. If you don’t believe that, continue reading this commentary.

Opis:
This study aims to investigate the impact of savings and foreign direct investment on economic growth in Poland. Savings play an important role in achieving sustainable growth. High saving rates are also an important tool to increase resilience to financial shocks. The economic climate that emerged following the financial crisis revealed problems with the economy of Poland to obtain foreign financing. The decrease in foreign direct investment has led to an unpredictable economic environment for developing countries such as Poland. The decrease in foreign direct investment has led to lower growth rates for an emerging market such as the economy of Poland. The relationship economic growth rate, saving and foreign direct investment are examined for Poland over the period 1992-2016 by using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach. According to this approach there is a cointegration relationship between the series and a 1% increase in savings which leads to a 0.81% increase on economic growth rate. Also a 1% increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) leads to a 1.52% increase in the economic growth rate.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki klasyfikacji gospodarstw domowych osób powyżej 50. roku życia na podstawie składu ich portfela oszczędnościowego. Materiał badawczy stanowiły dane jednostkowe Diagnozy Społecznej. Za pomocą analizy skupień wyodrębniono 4 typy gospodarstw seniorów1: „gotówkowcy” (46%), oszczędzający w banku i unikający gotówki (26%), oszczędzający w banku i w gotówce (25%), zdywersyfikowani (3%).
The article presents the results of the classification of households of people over 50 on the basis of the composition of their savings portfolio. The data used in the analysis come from the Social Diagnosis. By using the cluster analysis 4 types of elder people’s households2 were distinguished: saving in cash (46%), saving in banks and avoiding cash (26%), saving in bank and in cash (25%), diversified (3%). Households of elder people in Poland mainly use safe savings products that do not require their involvement. Almost half of the surveyed households of seniors accumulate their savings only in the form of cash. The paper is a research article.
В статье представлены результаты классификации домохозяйств лиц в возрасте свыше 50 лет на основе состава их портфеля сбережений. Opis:
Safe, efficient and user-friendly transportation of people and goods have been a premier point of concern for all the developed and the developing countries around the globe. National Highway N-5 or GT road is the most important highway link in Pakistan. It carries about 80% of the country freight traffic. When this heavy traffic passes through the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, it causes congestion and environmental hazards particularly in business centers of Rawalpindi city. Because of this heavy traffic volume passing through the cities situated along N-5, bypasses to all of them have been provided however, Rawalpindi is the only city along N5 which is still without a bypass. A bypass to Rawalpindi city is, therefore, inevitable. Besides this, the Bypass will also provide a short access to the traffic on the Motorway (M2) destined for the western part of Rawalpindi. For this research work, Rawalpindi Bypass is taken as a hypothetical scenario and is evaluated for its benefits. Besides addition to the networks of highways across Pakistan, this bypass has many other benefits which include a decrease in congestion from Islamabad and Rawalpindi main arteries (ISB Highway and IJP Road) that results in travel time savings, vehicle operating cost savings, safety savings, and reduced air pollution. This research aims to produce an engineering and scientific comparison of various costs and benefits associated with the road agency and users about the construction of an alternative. The Project involves transportation demand estimation on different segments of the National and Arterial roads, Project Costs, travel time savings, safety saving, vehicle operating cost savings, economic efficiency analysis, Air quality impact and multi criterion transportation decision making. The transportation decision making process usually involves the evaluation of effectiveness and efficiency of an alternative decision with respect to a base case DO-NOTHING Scenario. The authors have taken the existing roadway structure with no improvements as DO-NOTHING Scenario, whereas the construction of Rawalpindi Bypass (60 km) with 2 lanes in each direction is taken as Alternative B and Rawalpindi Bypass (51 km) as Alternative C. Multi criteria decision making technique is used for decision because of multiple options with different dimensions, both monetary and non-monetary. Basing of MCDM this study recommends Alternative C (51 km) for Rawalpindi Bypass.

Until about 25 years ago, almost all European countries had a so-called "three pillar" banking system comprising private banks, public savings banks and (mutual) cooperative banks. Since that time, several European countries have implemented far-reaching changes in their banking systems, which have more than anything else affected the two "pillars" of the savings and cooperative banks. The paper first describes these changes and points out the specific situation in Germany, as this country is almost unique in so far as the German savings banks and cooperative banks have maintained most of their traditional features. The article then describes the structure of the German "Three-Pillar" banking system and the place and role of savings and cooperative banks in it and concludes with a plea for diversity of institutional forms of banks by arguing why it is important to safeguard the strengths of those types of banks that do not conform to the model of a large shareholder-oriented commercial bank.
