Opis:
We describe a method of calculating one of the basic phenomena influenced by groundwater recharge, namely evapotranspiration (ET). The Operational Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEBop) algorithm was applied to calculate actual evapotranspiration (ETa), being modified to include spatiotemporal changes of substrate humidity and so referred to as mSSSEBop. Calculations were performed within the Szkwa and Rozoga River catchments (NE Poland). Quantitative ETa assessment was based on the analysis of Landsat satellite images, hydrometeorological and hydrogeological data. The results obtained for the original SSEBop algorithm and the modified mSSEBop one were compared with the water balance and data from a MOD16A2 dataset. The calculated water balance gave ETa values close to results using mSSEBop (with differences of 9-54 mm/year). In the case of the original algorithm, differences were in range of 42-218 mm/year. When compared with MOD16A2 data, the differences were within the range of -16.7 to 23.2 mm/8 days, with the mSSEBop algorithm giving on average lower ETa sums (~14%) than MOD16A2 while SSEBop gave results higher than MOD16A2 by ~12%. The studies performed indicate that the method presented, using satellite data, gives a reliable, spatial and temporal ETa assessment for the mid latitudes.

Opis:
During the Pomeranian phase of the Weichselian glaciation (~17–16 ka), the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley (NW Poland and easternmost Germany) drained water from the Pomeranian ice sheet, while intensive aeolian processes took place across Europe in the foreland of the Scandinavian ice sheet (‘European Sand Belt’). The micromorphology of the quartz grains in the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley shows no traces of these aeolian processes, or only vague signs of aeolian abrasion. This is unique among the aeolian sediments in other Pleistocene ice-marginal valleys in this part of Europe. The study of the surfaces of the quartz grains shows that the supply of grains by streams from the south was minimal, which must be ascribed to the climate deterioration during the Last Glacial Maximum, which resulted in a decrease of the discharge of these extraglacial rivers to the ice-marginal valley.

Opis:
The Złota Góra hills (Central Poland) have been variously interpreted as a kame, a sandur and as different types of moraine. Due to their morphology and internal structure, the Złota Góra hills differ, however, from typical depositional glacigenic landforms in the European lowlands. Morphologically, the Złota Góra hills consist of numerous asymmetrical and oval hills of various sizes. The deposits show a wide variety of lithofacies, which are diagnostic for debris flows, hyperconcentrated flows, sheetfloods, braided rivers, deltas and ephemeral lakes. The combination of such deposits is characteristic of an environmental setting including both an end moraine fan (debris flows, hyperconcentrated flows, sheetfloods and ephemeral lake deposits) and a sandur (braided river, sheetfloods, and delta or ephemeral lake deposits). Therefore, these hills must be interpreted as representing an end moraine/sandur massif. The hills were probably formed subaerially by meltwater in an interlobate area of the retreating Scandinavian ice sheet.

The return of forest on abandoned post-agricultural sandur soils of Charzykowska Plain. Based on changes of soil properties, vegetation and springtail assemblages, the phases of spontaneous restoration of forest on sandy soils were defi ned. In the fi rst phase, shortly after farming abandonment, the content of phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium in soil decreased very fast. On sites, released from agricultural pressure, herb vegetation mainly typical of Stellarietea mediae and Koelerio glaucae-Corynephoretea canestencentis classes occurred. In the second phase, in the fallow the encroachment of mosses and pine trees took place and the fi rst plant species typical of Vaccinio-Piceetea class appeared. In the third phase, the soil displays the following features: high humus content, high C:N ratio, low pH value and decrease in nitrogen content. In young pine forests the moss layer was abundantly developed while the herb layer was dominated by plants typical of coniferous forests. On the background of distinct phases of vegetation development, dynamic changes in springtail assemblages inhabiting litter and soil were observed. Biological diversity of vegetation communities and springtail assemblages developed in the course of spontaneous forest encroachment on post-agricultural lands are higher than ones of artifi cial aff orestation.

Opis:
An atypical lithological development of outwash deposits in the Carpathians Foreland (S Poland) shows lower and middle parts of the sedimentary succession that are characterized by sinuous palaeochannels. This channel facies consists of laterally accreted sands derived from side bars. The sedimentary environment was a proglacial system of anabranching channels, presumably of anastomosed type. The outwash channel pattern was most probably controlled by the raising base level of the fluvial system. Both proglacial and extraglacial waters were dammed by a sandur within a small upland valley. Aggradation and progradation of the glaciofluvial deposits resulted in progressive rising of the dammed lake level. The low hydraulic gradient of the outwash streams resulted in a sinuous planform as well as a lowenergy style of deposition. Afterwards, the rising lake water was drained off through a low watershed and the entire valley became filled with outwash sediments. The bedrock morphology thus became buried and a typical unconfined sandur with a braided channel network developed during the last phase of the glaciomarginal sedimentation (upper part of the sedimentary succession under study).

Opis:
During the Pleistocene the Scandinavian ice sheet drained huge quantities of sediment-laden meltwaters. These meltwaters supplied ice-marginal valleys that formed parallel to the front of the ice sheet. Not without significance was the supply of ice-marginal valleys from extraglacial rivers in the south. Moreover, periglacial conditions during and after sedimentation in ice-marginal valleys, the morphology of valley bedrocks, and erosion of older sediments played important roles in the depositional scenarios, and in the mineralogical composition of the sediments. The mechanisms that controlled the supply and deposition in ice-marginal valleys were analysed on the basis of a Pleistocene ice-marginal valley that was supplied by northern and southern source areas in the immediate vicinity. Investigations were conducted in one of the largest ice-marginal valleys of the Polish-German lowlands, i.e., the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley, in sandurs (Drawa and Gwda) supplied sediments and waters from the north into this valley, and on extraglacial river terraces (pre-Noteć and pre-Warta rivers), formed simultaneously with the sandurs and ice-marginal valley (Pomeranian phase of Weichselian glaciation) supplied sediments and waters from the south into this valley. A much debated question is how similar, or different, depositional processes and sediments were that contributed to the formation of the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley, and whether or not it is possible to differentiate mostly rapidly aggraded sandur sediments from ice-marginal valley sediments. Another question addresses the contribution of extraglacial feeding of the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley. These matters were addressed by a wide range of analyses: sediment texture and structure, architectural elements of sediments, frequency of sedimentary successions, heavy-mineral analysis (both transparent and opaque heavy minerals), analysis of rounding and frosting of quartz grains, and palaeohydrological calculations. Additionally, a statistical analysis was used. The specific depositional conditions of distribution of sediments in ice-marginal valley allow to distinguish new environment of ice-marginal valley braided river. The spectrum of depositional conditions in the Toruń-Eberswalde ice-marginal valley and their specific palaeohydraulic parameters allow to distinguish three coexisting zones in the ice-marginal valley braided-river system: (1) deep gravel-bed braided channel zone with extensive scours, (2) deep sand-bed braided channel zone with transverse bars, and (3) marginal sand-bed and gravel-bed braided channel zone with diamicton and breccia deposition, which were characterised in detail. Some of the results have been published previously, which is why they are discussed in the present paper within the context of new data.

The deformational structures of the developing subglacial (a) substratum deposits and the near Höfdabrekkujökull forefield (b) are the characteristic dynamic parts of the glacio-sedimentological system. These occur in different geomorphological situations: a) under sandur deposits, on the periphery of the fossil embankment of the frontal moraine, on both its distal and proximal slopes, and in the backside depression of this form and b) within the dead ice kettle which was formed in the surface part of the fluvioglacial deposits of the VI sandur level. The older, sub-sandur glaciotectonic discordances, which occur below sandur deposits, represent dynamic structures of two separate glacial advances. Independently of these, deformations of gravitational type also occur. In contrast, the deformations of melt-denudational deposits of the dead ice kettle, surrounded by fluvioglacial deposits, belong to younger (at least several tens years) distortions of gravitational type.

The research aimed to present an application of the technique based on the Dempster-Shafer theory for the determination of the shallow unconfined aquifer extent in a nonparametric (probabilistic) scale. The geology of research area is predominantly composed of the Pleistocene postglacial sediments. Only unconfined aquifers were taken into account in the study described in these paper. The resulting image showed a map of the aquifers’ extents in a probabilistic scale i.e. in a range between 0 (the lack of the aquifer, which is confirmed by research) and 1 (confirms the occurrence of the aquifer proved by research). Data analyses were carried out in the Geographic Information System. All the data were imported to the IDRISI. The Dempster-Shafer probability theory supported by the module BELIEF of IDRISI software was applied to the algebra of pixel maps.

The paper focuses on the problem of groundwater "ages" in the Pleistocene aquifers of the Wda and Mątawa River catchments. Groundwater residence time in the rocky environment of sandur areas was estimated with two methods i.e.: numerical modelling along the two lines of cross-sections and an isotope method (18O, 2H, 3H) for 6 samples. Chemical parameters (TDS, Cl) confirm the general trends of enriching water mineralization along the flow path in the sandur aquifer, as well as during infiltration towards the deeper aquifers.
