Opis:
In an essay on Günter Grass, Salman Rushdie suggests that the migrant experiences a triple disruption involving place, language and behaviour. Rather than being disabling, however, Rushdie [1992, p. 278] views it is empowering, where migrants become something magical, “borne-across humans – (…) metaphorical beings in their very essence.” In the first part of the paper it is suggested that Rushdie’s description of Grass as migrant not only gives a useful way of viewing the writer’s work, but also provides a tool for viewing other artists’ work. In doing so, the initial premise is extended to cover the existential alienation of which both Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre write, as well as Gilles Deleuze’s examination of the event. In the second part of the article, in light of these considerations, works by the artist and theatre director Tadeusz Kantor are analysed – Linia Podziału [The Dividing Line, 1966] and Umarła Klasa [The Dead Class, 1975], as well as the writer and playwright Samuel Beckett – Watt [1953], Molloy [1955] and Waiting for Godot [1955]. In the conclusion, it is suggested that even though there may be positive aspects to migrant experience these may not be (or want to be) understood.

This study aims to investigate the effects of process parameters: feed, depth of cut and flow rate, on the temperature during face milling of the D2 tool steel under two different lubricant conditions, Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) and Nano fluid Minimum Quantity Lubrication (NFMQL). Deionized water with the flow rate range 200–400 ml/h was used in MQL. 2% by weight concentration of Al2O3 nano particles with deionized water as a base fluid used as NFMQL with the same flow rate. Response surface methodology RSM central composite design CCD was used to design experiment run, modeling and analysis. ANOVA was used for the adequacy and validation of the system. The comparison shows that NFMQL condition reduced temperature more efficiently during machining.

Opis:
This work explains a novel method of producing activated carbon using laser treatment. Acrylic coated glass samples were developed by padding a glass non-woven sheet in 30% acrylic fibre solution (PAN solution) from waste acrylic bathmats. Samples were then dried and cured at different temperatures. After curing, stabilisation was performed at 230 °C with a heating rate of 50 °C hr-1. Infrared laser irradiation was performed on the stabilised web using a commercial pulsed infrared laser for carbonisation. The resultant acrylic glass carbon composite (AGCC) was characterised with the help of x-ray diffraction analysis, energy dispersive w-ray, and a scanning electron microscope to determine the increase in crystallinity as well as the percentage of carbon and surface roughness of the carbon glass composites. The adsorption capacity of the activated carbon (AC) glass composite prepared was determined by changing process inputs like the concentration of dye, the amount of AC glass composite, the agitation speed and pH. The results were analysed through different adsorption isotherms. It was established that the Freundlich model can more effectively describe results due to the development of heterogeneous surface characteristics. The kinetics of adsorption were studied using first order and second order models.
W artykule zaprezentowano nowatorską metodę wytwarzania węgla aktywnego za pomocą obróbki laserowej. Próbki szkła powlekanego akrylem opracowano przez wyściełanie arkusza włókniny szklanej 30% roztworem włókien akrylowych (roztwór PAN) z odpadów akrylowych mat łazienkowych. Próbki następnie suszono i utwardzano w różnych temperaturach. Zdolność adsorpcyjną przygotowanego kompozytu szklanego z węglem aktywnym (AC) określono zmieniając parametry wejściowe procesu, takie jak stężenie barwnika, ilość kompozytu szklanego AC, szybkość mieszania i pH. Wyniki przeanalizowano za pomocą różnych izoterm adsorpcji. Ustalono, że model Freundlich'a skuteczniej opisuje wyniki dzięki rozwojowi niejednorodnych charakterystyk powierzchni. Kinetykę adsorpcji zbadano za pomocą modeli pierwszego i drugiego rzędu.

Large PV installations are being built increasingly often in areas close to airports in Poland and around the world. These are not only roof installations but also large PV farms, allowing not only the supply of the energy for the airport itself but also the ability to sell the excess energy produced. The applied PV installations may cause in some cases negative impact in the form of e.g., electromagnetic fields and light reflections which may limit the visibility of pilots and air traffic controllers. The article presents an overview of various negative impacts of PV farms on the workings of an airport and the main factors influencing the occurrence of certain threats have been diagnosed. An assessment of the usefulness of the tool and method for simulation and the reduction of possible negative impacts is also presented.

Opis:
A unique, consistent, and uniform earthquake catalog is crucial for assessing seismic hazards in any locality. This study aims at compiling and processing a better uniform earthquake catalog, using this catalog to identify the probable subduction zone, and assessing seismicity parameters for Bangladesh. The study area is bounded by the geographical limits 16–29°N and 86–96°E. It includes a sum of 48,342 events which are compiled as 1.0 to 8.5 magnitudes (MW) and time period from 1548 to 2020 yrs. Uniformization is made between the body, surface wave, and moment magnitude scales to unify the catalog in terms of MW. For seismic hazard assessment or prediction studies, this catalog comprises earthquake events from Bangladesh and adjoining regions. The assessed MC obtained is around 4.0–5.0, which leads to a, b value varying between 0.71–1.12 and an a value varying between 4.85–7.12. The findings show that the MC is lower at the border of the Chittagong-Sylhet through Hill tracts than the northern part of the area with an MC 4.5–5.0 and a, b value close to 1.00. The results indicate that the study area is a seismically highly active zone in the context of seismicity parameters. Finally, the compiled catalog, seismicity of the area and a probable deformation front are presented and are recommended for use in assessing seismic hazard analysis in Bangladesh.

Opis:
In this paper, the behavior of structural concrete linear bar members was studied using numerical model implemented in a computer program written in MATLAB. The numerical model is based on the modified version of the procedure developed by Oukaili. The model is based on real stress-strain diagrams of concrete and steel and their secant modulus of elasticity at different loading stages. The behavior presented by normal force-axial strain and bending moment-curvature relationships is studied by calculating the secant sectional stiffness of the member. Based on secant methods, this methodology can be easily implemented using an iterative procedure to solve non-linear equations. A comparison between numerical and experimental data, illustrated through the strain profiles, stress distribution, normal force-axial strain, and moment-curvature relationships, shows that the numerical model has good numerical accuracy and is capable of predicting the behavior of structural concrete members with different partially prestressing ratios at serviceability and ultimate loading stages.

In order to understand travellers’ willingness to use the train in Petaling Jaya, this study adds four predictors - situational factors, trust, novelty seeking and external influence - to the existing model of theory of planned behaviour (TPB). The study collected research data from employees in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, resulting in valuable data of 400 participants. Results indicate that attitude, perceived behavioural control, and subjective norm are found to have positive effects on the behavioural intention of taking the train. Furthermore, novelty seeking and external influence also have positive influences on attitude. While the three antecedents of trust were found to have an indirect positive effect on commuters’ intention to take the train via attitude, subjective norm and PBC. Situational factors were found to have an indirect negative significant influence on people’s intention to take the train through perceived behavioural control.

Opis:
In this research antimicrobial activity of nanoparticles ZnO on perilous bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa was evaluated. P. aeruginosa is important pathogen that caused burn wound infections as it is multi-drug resistant and has several virulence factors. Fifteen samples of P. aeruginosa were collected from patients who suffering from Burn infections in Al-Hilla teaching hospital burn unit with the age range between (7-80) years old for both genders. After collecting burn samples, the diagnosis and characterization were performed by culturing and biochemical tests. ZnO NPs were synthesized by chemical method, Zinc oxide nanoparticles are well-known to be one of the multifunctional inorganic compounds which are widely used in medical applications. This study aims to prepare ZnO nanoparticles with particle size ranging from 23-29  nm. In the present study, surface modification of ZnO nanoparticles was performed, and influence of modification of the structure and morphological properties was investigated. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force (AFM). Zinc oxide nanoparticles with the average diameter of about 29 nm were modified with an oleic acid to exert more compatibility. From the results obtained it is suggested that modified ZnO-nanoparticles could be used effectively in safety environmental and medical applications. Antibacterial activity for nanoparticle ZnO against P. aeruginosa isolates was measured by: Agar Diffusion Technique and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC)/Minimum bactericidal Concentration (MBC) with microdilution. The best zone of inhibition was (35.5mm) at a concentration of 40 μg/ml of nano-ZnO in one strain of P. aeruginosa while the lowest inhibition zone was (16 mm) at a concentration of 20 μg/ml of nano ZnO in one strain also. In addition, all P. aeruginosa isolates were completely inhibited at the concentration of 3.7 μg/ml of nano-ZnO (MIC) but no significant antibacterial activity was observed at concentrations less than 1.8 μg/ml of nano-ZnO and the (MBC) was same as MIC (3.7 μg/ml) for all P.aeruginosa isolates.

Opis:
We continue the study on backbone colorings, a variation on classical vertex colorings that was introduced at WG2003. Given a graph G = (V,E) and a spanning subgraph H of G (the backbone of G), a λ-backbone coloring for G and H is a proper vertex coloring V→ {1,2,...} of G in which the colors assigned to adjacent vertices in H differ by at least λ. The algorithmic and combinatorial properties of backbone colorings have been studied for various types of backbones in a number of papers. The main outcome of earlier studies is that the minimum number l of colors, for which such colorings V→ {1,2,...,l} exist, in the worst case is a factor times the chromatic number (for path, tree, matching and star backbones). We show here that for split graphs and matching or star backbones, l is at most a small additive constant (depending on λ) higher than the chromatic number. Our proofs combine algorithmic and combinatorial arguments. We also indicate other graph classes for which our results imply better upper bounds on l than the previously known bounds.

The isotope of bromine, ⁷⁵Br ($T_{1/2}$ = 1.6 h), has a considerable interest in nuclear medicine. The radionuclide ⁷⁵Br is a positron emitter and is useful in positron emission tomography (PET) for fast metabolic processes. In this study the reaction cross sections were calculated for suggested various production mechanisms. The cross sections of charged particle-induced reactions, leading to ⁷⁵Br, were calculated for ⁷⁶Se(p,2n)⁷⁵Br, ⁷⁶Se(d,3n)⁷⁵Br, ⁷⁵As(³He,3n)⁷⁵Br and ⁷⁵As(⁴He,4n)⁷⁵Br using TALYS 1.6. The calculated results are compared with measurement data available in literature. The calculated results indicate that, ⁷⁶Se(p,2n)⁷⁵Br and ⁷⁶Se(d,3n)⁷⁵Br reaction channels have higher cross section values than that of ⁷⁵As(³He,3n)⁷⁵Br reaction channel. Moreover all these reaction channels are in the range of a medium-sized cyclotron.

The back swept multi splitter blade impeller was designed with a big splitter positioned close to the main blade suction surface and a smaller splitter close to the pressure surface. Adding this multi splitter improves the overall performance of the modified impeller due to less intensive flow separation and smaller pressure loss. In particular, the total pressure ratio was observed to increase from 4.1 to 4.4, with one percent increase in efficiency.

Opis:
An innovative desalination method called electrosorption or capacitive deionization (CDI) has significant benefits for wastewater treatment. This process is performed by using a carbon fiber electrode as a working electrode to remove hexavalent chromium ions from an aqueous solution. The pH, NaCl concentration, and cell voltage were optimized using the Box-Behnken experimental design (BDD) in response surface methodology (RSM) to study the effects and interactions of selected variables. To attain the relationship between the process variables and chromium removal, the experimental data were subjected to an analysis of variance and fitted with a quadratic model. The optimum conditions to remove Cr(VI) ions were: pH of 2, a cell voltage of 4.3V, and NaCl concentration of 1.4 g/L. This study demonstrated that the carbon fiber electrode was very efficient in Cr(VI) ions removal and the BBD methodology was a practical and effective strategy for predicting the results of various experimental conditions during a CDI process for the removal of chromium ions.
