Opis:
The paper presents a multi-objective deterministic method of weather routing for sailing vessels. Depending on a particular purpose of sailboat weather routing, the presented method makes it possible to customize the criteria and constraints so as to fit a particular user’s needs. Apart from a typical shortest time criterion, safety and comfort can also be taken into account. Additionally, the method supports dynamic weather data: in its present version short-term, mid-term and long-term term weather forecasts are used during optimization process. In the paper the multi-objective optimization problem is first defined and analysed. Following this, the proposed method solving this problem is described in detail. The method has been implemented as an online SailAssistance application. Some representative examples solutions are presented, emphasizing the effects of applying different criteria or different values of customized parameters.

Opis:
The article presents a method to determine the route of a sailing vessel with the aid of deterministic algorithms. The method assumes that the area in which the route is to be determined is limited and the basic input data comprise the wind vector and the speed characteristic of the vessel. Compared to previous works of the authors, the present article additionally takes into account the effect of sea waves with the resultant resistance increase on the vessel speed. This approach brings the proposed model closer to real behaviour of a sailing vessel. The result returned by the method is the sailing route, optimised based on the multi-criteria objective function. Along with the time criterion, this function also takes into account comfort of voyage and the number of performed turns. The developed method has been implemented as simulation application SaillingAssistance and experimentally verified.

Opis:
This article presents the basic parameters of soft ropes: natural fibre ropes, soft wire ropes and synthetic fibre ropes used for running rigging. There are only several materials still used for the production of natural fibre ropes, including cotton, jute, hemp, sisal and manila hemp. The most commonly used soft wire ropes are twisted pair ropes; for smaller diameters there is a 6x19M – FC rope and for larger diameters – 6x37M – FC. There are several types of materials of varied properties and used in different combinations that are utilised for the production of synthetic fibre ropes. Therefore, the parameters of ropes used for the running rigging of staysails, i.e. halyards, downhauls, sheets and tack lines are discussed. Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) called dyneema and spectra, or polyester (PES) called diolen, dacron and trevira are most often used for this type of rigging. The problems with modelling the strength properties of synthetic fibre ropes are related with their complex geometry and structure. Multilayered models and the Continuum model are the basic models determining the strength properties of synthetic fibre ropes.
W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono podstawowe parametry lin miękkich: naturalnych, stalowych miękkich i syntetycznych, wykorzystywanych w olinowaniu ruchomym. Pozostało zaledwie kilka surowców służących do wytwarzania lin z włókien naturalnych, są to m.in.: bawełna, juta, konopie, sizal i manila.

Opis:
In this paper the possibilities of providing fresh water for sailing vessels based on the example of s/v Dar Modziey are presented. Different methods of obtaining fresh water such as rainwater harvesting, replenishing water tanks at harbours, collecting condensed water from air conditioning systems or producing fresh water from seawater by means of desalination equipment were considered. Vacuum vaporizers (heated by fresh water used as a cooling medium of the main propulsion engines) and osmotic desalinators (using the phenomenon of reverse osmosis) were being taken under consideration. Special focus was put on the quality of water obtained; comparing the methods mentioned and pursuing the best solution both in technical and economic terms. The choice of desalinators was preceded by the analysis of quantity and configuration of pumps and membranes that will guarantee optimum performance. Selection of the manufacturer was determined by costs of purchase, costs of operation and the availability of spare parts and consumables. The osmotic desalinator ended up as the final choice of fresh water producing device on s/v Dar Modziey. Excessive water consumption can be satisfied by replenishing supplies at ports. The paper is concluded with comments and suggestions that can be adapted by a ship owner as a solution for the problem of supplying vessels with fresh water.

Opis:
The paper presents a multi-objective method, which optimises the route of a sailboat. The presented method makes use of an evolutionary multi-objective (EMO) algorithm, which performs the optimisation according to three objective functions: total passage time, a sum of all course alterations made during the voyage and the average angle of heel. The last two of the objective functions reflect the navigator’s and passenger’s comfort, which may decrease with multiple turns or when experiencing an excessive heel angle for a long time. The optimisation process takes into account static bathymetry-related constraints as well as dynamic constraints related to the sailboat’s safety in changing wind and wave conditions. The method makes use of all of the above and finally returns an approximated Pareto set containing non-dominated solutions to the optimisation problem. The developed method has been implemented as a simulation application. The paper includes selected simulation results followed by their discussion.

Opis:
In this article is presented the methodology of calculation of principal parameters of hull a vessel and resistance components. The approximate method is based on the analysis of the results of model tests and surrender tests presented in the literature. Ship owners' preliminary assumptions for new ship consist of deadweight, speed-shipping line and others. This goal needs definition of principal dimensions of a vessel, which are the basis for further calculations of hull’s resistance and evaluation of necessary power of main engine to fulfil shipping requirements. The route and its environment, type of cargo, quantity to be moved, and value of the cargo and port facilities are typical features, which will be considered when evolving the size, speed, and specification of a suitable ship. Specific service requirements will be similarly considered when evolving vessels such as warships, passenger ships or fishing vessels. Selection of main dimensions of vessel is limited by related to seaways or harbours characteristic and limitations rules regarding buoyancy, stability, hull strength, manoeuvring capability, etc. The influence of the main dimensions of the ship and their coefficients of maritime and strength properties of the ship were presented. Moreover, formulas for calculation of the ship's resistance components, such as friction resistance, and wave shape, as well as the results of calculations for different types of ships, for the assumed deadweight and speed of sailing, are presented.

Opis:
The paper analyses the performance of an Automatic Vessel Identification System on Medium Frequency (AVISOMEF), which works with the Grid Method (GM) on high density maritime European routes using real data and uniformly distributed data. Compared to other systems, AVISOMEF is a novelty, as it is not a satellite system, nor is it limited by a given coverage distance, in contrast to the Automatic Identification System (AIS), though in exceptional circumstances it leans towards it. To perform the analysis, special simulation software was developed. Moreover, a number of maritime routes along with their traffic density data were selected for the study. For each route, two simulations were performed, the first of which based on the uniform traffic distribution along the route, while the second one made use of real AIS data positioning of vessels sailing on the selected routes. The obtained results for both simulations made the basis for formulating conclusions regarding the capacity of selected routes to support AVISOMEF.
