Opis:
Khatouni melons are a major horticultural crop that is produced mainly in semi arid and arid regions of Iran. The plant root characteristics can significantly affect many growth traits, including water and nutrients uptake under such dry conditions. On the other hand, nutrient elements concentration and their ratios can strongly affect the root morphophysiological and structure. In this study, the growth and root system characteristics of Khatouni melon was evaluated under various potassium (K) levels of nutrient solution. A rhizobox system with sand-hydroponic culture was applied. Hoagland formula was used for nutrient solution preparation, and different potassium levels of 0, 59, 118, 176 and 235 mg L–1 K of nutrient solution were applied to plants, while other nutrients were kept relatively unchanged. The results showed that the highest shoot fresh weight, leaf area and SPAD value were at 235 or 176 mg L–1 K, whereas the root characteristics were affected by K treatments in different patterns. The highest root fresh weight was in plants treated with 118 mg L–1 K, whereas root dry weight was significantly lower in treatment without K nutrition than other K levels of nutrient solution. Plant root diameter was thickest at 176 mg L–1 K and it was longest at 118 mg L–1 K, whereas the shortest roots were at 235 mg L–1 K of nutrient solution. Root area was the highest at 118, 176 and 235 mg L–1 K of nutrient solution. Root nutrient concentration of N, K, P, Ca and Fe was the highest at 118 or 176 mg L–1 K; however, the lowest amount of root Mg and Fe was in plants treated with 235 mg L–1 K. For other traits of root and shoot growth, the lowest records were in treatment without K nutrition. The results indicate that shoot or root growth characteristics of Khatouni melon can be improved by moderate to high, or moderate potassium levels.

Opis:
The fundamental aim of this study was to investigate the growth responses of selected Jordanian cultivated barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) genotypes to the salinity stress. Twenty-six landraces and two recent cultivars were subjected to four levels of salinity (0, 50, 100 and 200 mM NaCl). The salt stress was found to influence the majority of germination ability such as germination % which ranged from about 80% to 100% (One-way ANOVA; p ≤ 0.05). Moreover, germination was statistically affected in correspondence to exposure time to salinity and in relation to genotypic composition of studied barley (two-row vs. six-row accessions) (Two-Way ANOVA; p ≤ 0.05). Early seedling growth traits were also found to decline with increasing salinity stress. Moreover, according to the growth parameters genotypes, M’ 1595, M’ 1593, Ir 1558, Ir 1631, Ir 1639, Mf 1545, and Mf 1548 were found to have better performance than others. On the other hand, the genotypes M’ 1593, M’ 1594, M’ 1595, Ir 1558, Ra 1552, Ra 1611, Mf 1616, Mf 1617, and Ma 1592 were most affected genotypes by salinity. The results of this study lead to the conclusion that the response to the salinity stress is complex, yet the comprehensive results found in this study provide a foundation for deeper exploration of diversity as well as the gene–trait relationships and their utilization in future barley improvement.

Opis:
For several decades an increase of platinum in the environment was recorded. This is connected with the release of platinum from automobile catalytic converters and pharmaceutical industries. In the conducted experiments the effect of various forms and concentrations of platinum on the germination and roots growth of different plants (oat, garden cress and tomato) was investigated. Two separate experiments were performed with lower (experiment 1st: 1, 5 and 10 mg/L) and higher (experiment 2nd: 10, 20 and 40 mg/L) [Pt(NH3)4](NO3)2 or PtCl4 dosages. There was no significant effect of dose and form of platinum on the germination of seeds (experiment 1st and 2nd). The effect of platinum containing substances dose on root growth of young seedlings was observed during experiment, dependent on the species of tested plants. The root length of oat plants was similar in all treatments in experiment 1st. The shortest tomato roots were observed in the case of a 10 mg/L of PtCl4, it was statistically shorter than the control plants (treated with water) as well. The roots of the tomato treated with [Pt(NH3)4](NO3)2 were the same length as observed for the control sample. The garden cress root growth was not affected by [Pt(NH3)4](NO3)2, but a solution containing Pt4+ stimulated the root growth. The roots of tomato and oat treated with [Pt(NH3)4](NO3)2 had similar length as the control plants in contrast to the far shorter roots treated with PtCl4 (experiment 2nd). Moreover, the treatment with [Pt(NH3)4](NO3)2 stimulated the growth of garden cress roots compared to the control, while only the lowest dose of PtCl4 stimulated the root growth.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of various biopreparations on the growth of the apple root system, the number of spores of AMF, the total number of bacteria and microscopic fungi in the rhizosphere soil, and the degree of mycorrhizal association in the roots of two apple tree cultivars. The experiment was established in the spring of 2009 in the Experimental Orchard of the Institute of Horticulture in Dąbrowice. The research objects were one-year-old maidens of the apple cultivars ‘Topaz’ and ‘Ariva’ grafted on M26 rootstock. The trees were treated with the following biopreparations: control, control NPK (standard NPK fertilization), manure, Micosat F + manure, Humus UP, Humus Active + Aktywit PM, BioFeed Amin + manure, BioFeed Quality + manure, Tytanit + manure, Vinassa + manure, Florovit Eko, and Florovit Pro Natura. Treatment of ‘Topaz’ and ‘Ariva’ apple trees with the biopreparations Micosat F, Humus UP, Humus Active + Aktywit PM, BioFeed Amin, Vinassa, Florovit Eko and Florovit Pro Natura produced positive effects on the growth of apple roots and their mycorrhizal frequency, and the size of the populations of microorganisms in the rhizosphere soil.
Opis:
The root system architecture (RSA) displays complex morphological characteristics because of diverse root growth behaviors. Recent studies have revealed that swarming behavior among roots is particularly important for RSA to adapt to environmental stimuli. However, few models are proposed to simulate RSA based on swarming behavior of roots. To analyze plasticity of RSA affected by swarming behavior, we propose viewing it as a swarm of single roots. A swarming behavior model is proposed by considering repulsion, alignment, and preference of individual single roots. Then, the swarming behavior model is integrated into a simple and generic RSA model (called ArchiSimple). Lastly, characteristics of RSA affected by swarming behavior model and non-swarming behavior model are compared and analyzed under three different virtual soil sets. The characteristics of RSA (such as primary root length, lateral root length, lateral roots, and resource uptake) are significantly promoted by swarming behavior. Root system distributions can also be greatly affected by swarming behavior. These results show that root foraging and exploration in soil can be regarded as collective behavior of individual single root.
