Polish female romance tourism is a relatively recent phenomenon linked to mass tourism to Middle East and North Africa with Egypt being one of the top travel destinations. Local exotic, travel and leisure time create conditions to enter a romantic relationship with local Muslim men. In this regard Islam is the source of danger and fascination. On the one hand it is about the essentialized submissive position of women, but on the other hand local context brings in the potential of a racialized sexuality. The paper aims to analyze how Islam is narrated and used in discussions at two Polish Internet forums dedicated to female romance tourism in Egypt and Tunisia. The data corpus indicates that information about Islam is used in order to decode, interpret and predict the behavior and motivation of Muslim men.

The reading practices of women, mediated by a prison library in Portugal, constituted an interesting case study. In Santa Cruz do Bispo prison, female prisoners were increasingly aged and excluded from social groups, less literate, and educated. Many were first-time library users and some were beginning readers. This research aimed to understand their reading practices and preferences, their self-assigned meanings, and the roles of reading in prison. Having become aware that industrial literature romance novels were the most requested items, a critical comparative analysis of the three most requested titles was contrasted with readers’ favorite passages to foster a deeper understanding of their preferences and sustain an integrated analysis. Furthermore, a consensualized definition of a “good read” is presented. The results from ethnography and interviews to readers and staff are analyzed taking into account class, gender, ethnicity, age, occupation, and education of the detainees. Conclusions address the fact that although the prison’s educational service and imprisonment conditions propitiated an increase in reading generally, the library was oriented by educational targets and irresponsive to certain demands expressed by readers. Secondly, women readers were using the available top-selling romance novels to sustain their introspective and prospective work, while reckoning with their past and planning for their future. In addition to this reflexive stance, escapist entertainment and knowledge building were important reading purposes.

W artykule zawarte są rozważania teoretycznoliterackie dotyczące określenia przynależności genologicznej utworu "Markiz de Tomsk" syberyjskiego pisarza Borysa Klimyczewa. Jak udało się ustalić, utwór ten charakteryzuje synkretyzm gatunkowy. W jego poetyce można dostrzec elementy powieści historycznej i romansu awanturniczego. Autor niniejszej pracy przywołuje opinie badaczy oraz dokonuje analizy literackiej tekstu.
The author of the paper attempts to define the genre of the novel "Marquis de Tomsk" by Boris Klimychev, a modern (1930-2013) Russian writer from Siberia. His book has not been translated into Polish but neither is Klimychev well known in Russia, his work remaining known mostly to local readers. In the paper an essential emphasis has been placed on the literary analysis of genre characteristics of Klimychev’s romance. "Marquis de Tomsk" proves extremely difficult to describe because it combines the features of several literary genres. The analysis shows that the writer included in his book elements of historical novel, adventure novel and picaresque romance. He also used techniques and themes typical of the poetics of sentimentality. The plot centres on a series of episodes from the life of the characters, both such that have their historical prototypes and fictional ones. The writer relied on historical sources but also described in the novel interesting characters and events, taking into account their attractiveness to potential recipients. Klimychev foregrounded adventurous stories and made love intrigue an important element of the plot. All these components allow us to conclude that the book under discussion is a historical novel with features of picaresque romance.

Relationships in a professional environment are no longer exclusively formal, but also personal with increasing frequency. As managing personal relations in the workplace is becoming a challenge for human resource management professionals, the goal of the article is to present the phenomenon of the office affair, its causes, and its positive and negative consequences for the functioning of the company. The paper also provides guidelines on how to build effective policies for managing the intimate life of an organization.

Carlo MartinezUniversità “G. d’Annunzio” di Chieti-Pescara, Italy “The thin delights of moonshine and romance”: Romance, Tourism, and Realism in Hawthorne’s The Marble Faun Abstract: Hawthorne’s involvement with the logic of the tourism of his day is a key aspect of his development as a fiction writer. Starting from a discussion of the early sketch “My Visit to Niagara” the article argues that the discourse of tourism, with its protocols and practices, is for Hawthorne a fertile breeding ground and conceptual framework for the elaboration of a new rationale and a new aesthetic for the fiction writing he calls “romance.” It then explores how tourism resonates in the romance which takes it as its central thematic concern: The Marble Faun. Hawthorne’s last completed long work of fiction represents a moment of artistic and personal crisis for the author, who finds his notion of romance writing caught in a sort of double bind created by the touristic nature of his stay in Italy. As the plot of the novel suggests, in his efforts to extricate himself from the situation, Hawthorne, envisioned and experimented with a new kind of writing that led him to revise and alter radically the romance form he had previously elaborated in favor of a much more realistic style of fiction. The article is a description of an extensive novel by a Galician writer, Maria Pomezańska née Chłędowska, entitled Gertruda Komorowska and published in 1853 in Lviv. The analysis is based on a few issues. Firstly, the sources determining a particular variant of the story of the marriage between Szczęsny Potocki and Gertruda Komorowska and the crime committed against a young woman. Secondly, the way the heroes were created and their mutual emotional and psychological relationships. Thirdly, the motivations that prompted the writer to deal with the topic which was already known and described in literature at that time. The article leads to the conclusion that Pomezańska’s work refers to women’s historical anecdotes of the 18th and 19th centuries, but its goals are essentially feminist, also because the past is used to build a kind of female supplement to official history. Its widely known canvas was filled with the voice of women, overlooked or marginalized by male writers.

The article discusses Small World, one of the most popular campus novels by the contemporary author David Lodge. What distinguishes Small World is the theme of academia: nearly all major characters are lecturers in literature. Lodge involves the reader in an intertextual game whose meanings are available only to experts, i.e. lecturers themselves, since most readers may overlook the fact that the novel is a satirical remake of Arthurian romance. The “critical point” mentioned in the title of the article alludes to critical debates in the novel, to a critique of the academic institution as such and indicates Small World as the climax of the genre.
Artykuł omawia Mały światek, jedną z najbardziej znanych powieści uniwersyteckich współczesnego pisarza brytyjskiego Davida Lodge’a. Omawiany tekst wyróżnia tematyka ściśle akademicka, jako że niemal wszyscy bohaterowie powieści to przedstawiciele kadry uniwersyteckiej, wykładowcy literatury. Lodge angażuje czytelnika w intertekstualną grę, której znaczenia są dostępne w zasadzie tylko dla ekspertów, czyli samych wykładowców, np. większości czytelników może umknąć fakt, że powieść jest satyryczną repliką romansu arturiańskiego. Wspomniany w tytule „punkt krytyczny” odwołuje się do krytyki literackiej, częstego tematu debat w powieści, oznacza też krytykę samej instytucji akademii i kulminację gatunku powieści uniwersyteckiej, jakim wydaje się być Mały światek.

The aim of the paper is to analyse the Trędowata by Helena Mniszek from the angle of the Polish novel about love – a kind of literature developed in the age of modernism. First, the constitutive elements of Mniszek’s work (playing part in commercial success of the book) are distinguished. Next, the main characters of Trędowata are analysed from the wide methodological perspective which allows to recognize them as representations of cultural archetypes as well as of Greimasian structural functions. Finally, the paper takes up the question of socio-anthropological background of mass culture and focuses on some social problems connected with the popularity of the literature instantiated by Trędowata.

Translacja automatyczna jest działem zastosowań informatyki, którego zadaniem jest wypracowanie metod algorytmizacji przekładu tekstów napisanych w pewnym języku naturalnym na inny język naturalny. Pomimo znacznego wysiłku badawczego włożonego w budowę systemów automatycznej translacji, automatyzacja przekładu dla tekstów należących do języka ogólnego wciąż nie doczekała się w pełni satysfakcjonującego rozwiązania. Jakość przekładów automatycznych wprawdzie z roku na rok wzrasta, ale systemom translacji automatycznej wciąż jest daleko do pożądanego ideału, który być może jest w ogóle nieosiągalny. Artykuł niniejszy stanowi drugą część cyklu publikacji, poświęconych opracowanej przez autora metodzie translacji automatycznej opartej na wzorcach PBMT (Pattern-Based Machine Translation). Metoda PBMT stanowi kombinację znanych wcześniej metod automatycznego przekładu opartych na przykładach EBMT (Example-Based Machine Translation) oraz na regułach gramatycznych (Rule-Based Machine Translation). W artykule zamieszczono wyniki rozważań dotyczących analizy możliwości i ograniczeń zastosowania metody PBMT w celu automatyzacji przekładu pomiędzy wybranymi językami germańskimi i romańskimi a językiem polskim.
Machine translation is a discipline of computer science the purpose of which is to deliver the methods of automatization of translation of texts written in some natural language into another. Despite the great scientific effort connected with the development of machine translation systems for the general language, the automatisation of translation is still far away from its fully satisfactory sollution. Besides that the quality of automatic translation is growing sistematicly, the fully-automatic high-quality machine translation system for unrestricted text is still something ideal that maybe will never be attained. The paper is the second one of the longer series of publications of this author devoted to the method of machine translation that was developed by himself The method was called Pattern-Based Machine Translation (PBMT) and is a hybride of Example-Based Machine Translation and Rule-Based Machine Translation. The paper is a summary of the analysis of possiblities of implementation of PBMT for machine translation systems that trans late from certain Germanic and Romance languages into the Polish language.

Średniowieczne utwory niderlandzkie stanowią interesujący przedmiot badań interdyscyplinarnych. Ich wyraźnie moralizatorski charakter nie wyklucza istnienia głębszych wymiarów teologicznych, których odkrycie i twórcze zinterpretowanie może pobudzić współczesnego czytelnika do bardziej odważnego poszukiwania śladów Transcendencji w nierzadko tragicznym ludzkim losie.
This article outlines the literary and theological view on the demonology as presented in the medieval Dutch romance “Jonathas ende Rosafiere”. After the discovery made by Remco Sleiderink of unknown fragments from 14th century this text has received some new attention mainly regarding the content that has been rearranged. Among many questions that have to be answered was that of the devilish element. The text reaches its climax in a rape scene on one of the main characters Rosafiere by her own father, who sneaks into the convent, accompanied by and with the help of the devil, both in the form of a nun. In this article the motif of the anthropomorphic devil is presented from theological point of view as a locus theologicus and analysed and explained by means of literary theology. At the same time the article is challenging the contemporary research in the humanities and its link to the recent developments.

Rural houses of the Barraca Valenciana type stand out from the Spanish folk architecture with their spectacular yet relatively simple form. Their architectural expression is made up of clay, whitewashed walls and steep, thatched roofs. The entrance placed in the gable wall is often preceded by a pergola. The author discuss it in the context of the architecture of societies that use the languages belonging to the Occitano-Romance group and in a broader European perspective.
Wiejskie domy mieszkalne typu barraca valenciana wyróżniają się spośród hiszpańskiej architektury ludowej spektakularną, choć stosunkowo prostą formą. Na ich wyraz architektoniczny składają się gliniane, bielone ściany i strome dachy pokryte strzechą. Wejście umieszczone w ścianie szczytowej, często poprzedza pergola. Autor omawiają je w kontekście architektury społeczeństw, które posługują się językami należącymi grupy oksytanoromańskiej oraz w szerszej perspektywie europejskiej.

Disraeli miał kilka romansów z mężatkami, ale po ślubie z bogatą wdową stał się kochającym i wiernym małżonkiem. Mimo pokaźnego majątku żony, miał problemy finansowe, które w końcu udało mu się rozwiązać dzięki pieniądzom, które hojnie zapisała mu tajemnicza dama z Kornwalii. Spośród wszystkich kobiet, które poznał Disraeli, królowa Wiktoria zajmowała szczególne i wyjątkowe miejsce. Królowa ceniła jego lojalność i poświęcenie oraz uwielbiała jego pochlebstwa.
In his youth, Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) did not shy away from women, although he was fascinated by male friendships, which – as suggest some biographers – could point to the homoerotic element of his personality. His closest friends included two prominent dandies of the Regency era – the writer Edward Bulwer-Lytton and the amateur artist Count Alfred d’Orsay. His non-English appearance, exceptional intelligence and dandy’s fame attracted the attention of many London ladies. Disraeli had several affairs with married women, but after his marriage with a widow of large fortune, he became a loving and faithful husband. Despite his wife’s considerable wealth, Disraeli continued to have serious financial problems, which he finally resolved thanks to the money bequeathed to him by the mysterious lady from Cornwall. Of all the women who Disraeli met, Queen Victoria occupied a special and unique place. She appreciated his loyalty and dedication and adored his flattery.

Speaking foreign language does not imply only mastering its lexical and morphosyntactic code, but, more importantly, learning to conceptualize differently the world around us. One of major sources of deviations in L2 is due to a very poor mastery of conventional structures (formulaic competence), an incorrect linguistic profiling and the confusion between the synthetic and analytical character of the L1 and the L2 (here Polish and French). Beginners in Romance philology often fall into a trap when trying to verbalize in a written form their communicative intentions. We propose here to analyze their sociolinguistic and sociocultural mistakes in order to imagine a course of remedial teaching.
