Opis:
When high precision modelling is required, for example, with the estimation of suspended sediment load (SSL), data-driven models are preferred over physically-based numerical models for their real-time, short-horizon prediction ability. The investigation of SSL, as an important index in engineering practices assessment, like design and operation of the hydraulic structures not only shows the hydrological behaviour of the river, but also illustrates the valuable information about the water quality deterioration, surface-groundwater interaction and land-use changes of the watershed. The following data-driven methods were compared in order to predict SSL at the Seyra gauging station on the Karaj River in Iran: Fuzzy logic (FL), two adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (i.e., ANFIS-GP and ANFIS-FCM models), an artificial neural network (ANN), and least squares support vector machine (LSSVM). Monthly average river flow and SSL data for 50 years were obtained from the Tehran Regional Water Authority (TRWA). The data was first divided into training, validation and test sets and the SSL was then predicted using the ANN, FL, ANFIS, and LSSVM models. The reliability of the applied models was evaluated by the correlation coefficient (R), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE). The results showed that the ANFIS models outperformed the ANN, FL, and LSSVM models for predicting SSL using the given input and output data. Overall, the performances of the artificial intelligence models used in the present study were satisfactory in predicting the non-linear behaviour of the SSL.

Sediment is a universal issue that is generated in the river catchment and affects the river flow, reservoir capacity, hydropower generation and dam structure. This paper aims to present the result of experimentation in sediment load estimation using various machine learning algorithms as a powerful AI approach. The data was collected from eight locations in upstream area of Ringlet reservoir catchment. The input variables are discharge and suspended solid. It was found that there is strong correlation between sediment and suspended solid with correlation coefficient of R = 0.9 . The developed ML model successfully estimated the sediment load with competitive results from ANN, Decision Tree, AdaBoost and SVM. The best result was produced by SVM (v-SVM version) where very low RMSE was generated for both training and testing dataset despite its more complicated hyperparameters setup. The results also show a promising application of machine learning for future prediction in hydro-informatic systems.

Opis:
Fluctuations in suspended sediment concentration (SSC) has been investigated in the Warta River(western Poland), based on data obtained for the period 1961-1980 from three gauge stations located in upstream, middle-stream and downstream areas. Over the two decades, the SSC values demonstrated wide fluctuations and an overall increase at each gauge station. No significant correlation was generally observed between SSC and discharge but high SSC was found to follow low discharge and increasing temperature during the summer seasons in some years. Measurements of SSC and discharge were used to estimate total annual suspended sediment load (SSL). SSL values were found to increase downstream along with an increase in discharge. SSC decreases along the river course. However, when it comes to changes over time, SSL variability was mainly determined by SSC changes. The maximum SSC values were primary caused by anthropogenic factors: the disposal of mine wastewater upstream, river training works, increased urbanisation and the intensification of sewage disposal. Where the river catchment has been greatly affected by anthropogenic factors, a denudation index calculated solely based on SSC and discharge does not appear to reflect the actual denudation rate, and must be treated with caution.

Zinc present in water penetrates into the organism of a fish either directly, through the skin and gills, or indirectly, with food taken into the alimentary canal. The toxocity of this metal is associated with the transporting function of blood, which distributes it over the whole organism. The aim of this paper was to assess the zinc content in water and bottom sediments collected from the Dunajec River, and also in selected organs of bleak (Alburnus alburnus L.). The bioaccumulation factors for this element in the muscles, liver, skin and bones of the fish were calculated from the results of the research, which was carried out in 2011. Samples of water and bottom sediments were collected twice, in July and October, at 5 research points located in Szczepanowice, Janowice, Wróblowice, Lusławice, and Zakliczyn. Twenty-nine specimens of bleak were provided by members of the Polish Angling Association (PZW — Polski Związek Wędkarski), from catches performed in the second half of July. The zinc concentration in the samples was determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry at a wavelength of 206.200 nm, conducted on an Optima 7600 DV spectrometer made by Perkin Elmer. The limit of detection for zinc was 5.9 μg · dm-3. High concentrations of zinc in the water were found, indicative of anthropogenic enrichment of the river with this element. The zinc content in the analysed sediments was below the geochemical background value for bottom sediments in Poland. Zinc concentrations in the fish varied within a range from 152.6 to 352 mg ∙ kg-1 in the skin, from 158.8 to 271.3 mg ∙ kg-1 in the bones, from 27.32 to 97.35 mg ∙ kg-1 in the muscles, and from 82.39 to 230.7 mg ∙ kg-1 in the liver. The mean content of zinc in individual organs decreased in the following order: skin > skeleton > liver > muscles. Zinc concentrations in individual organs of the fish were comparable with the ones determined eslewhere in environments polluted with this element.

Opis:
Overbank sediment profiles of the channelized and heavily polluted Vistula and Odra rivers were investigated in southern Poland. The sediments are usually represented by sandy layers about a dozen centimetres thick, intercalated with black sandy muds few centimetres thick and rich in organic matter. Accumulation of these sediments started by the end of 19th century. The sediments are contaminated with heavy metals in amounts exceeding background values by two orders of magnitude and contain coal particles dispersed in black layers. These fine sediments initially accumulated over gravel bars at the channel banks due to lateral channel stabilization by stony groynes and bank revetments, constructed in 19th and 20th century. Progressively the sediments, which are up to 4 m thick, became a part of 20–30 m wide floodplain zones along many reaches of the upper Vistula and Odra. The distribution of these sediments is related to the degree of channel narrowing and incision induced by 19th and 20th century channelization.

Opis:
ArcGIS został wykorzystany powtórnie podczas opracowywania wyników i posłużył do wygenerowania nowych rzędnych dna w stanie początkowym i końcowym. Różnica między nimi zobrazowała wielkość zachodzącej erozji i akumulacji. Proces erozji zaszedł w 13 przekrojach na analizowanym odcinku (średnia różnica rzędnych ujemna), natomiast akumulację zaobserwowano w 53 przekrojach. Maksymalna wartość spłycenia dna wyniosła 1,24 m w przekroju w km 18+868, natomiast największe pogłębienie wystąpiło w km 8+654 i wyniosło – 0,76 m. Wszystkie wartości ponownie zostały naniesione na mapę topograficzną dla lepszego zobrazowania uzyskanych wyników.
The aim of this study was to perform a simulation of sediment transport for the section of the river Ner, while also utilizing GIS tools. Using the ArcGIS numerical model of channel and stream valleys were developed, and motion simulations and sediment transport set for 5 ten-year periods were performed in HEC-RAS. Updated geometries after the simulations were created using the tools of RAS Mapper. ArcGIS was used again for analysing the results. It was used to generate ordinates of bottom in the initial state and final. The difference between them illustrated the magnitude of erosion and accumulation. The process of erosion occurred in 13 sections of the analysed model (the standard differential ordinates negative), while the accumulation in 53 sections. The maximum value of shallowing bottom was 1.24 m (cross-section at km 18 + 868), while the largest deepening occurred at km 8 + 654 (– 0.76 m). All values, using ArcGIS, were marked on othophotomap.

Poland, as a member state of European Union, is obliged to implement Union Directives, aimed at achieving good ecological state of the environment. Which conforms to standards of EU member states. Sulejow Reservoir is a source of drinking water for Lodz Agglomeration in which severe symptoms of eutrophication have been observed. High catchment surface to reservoir surface ratio and agricultural use of catchment (64% of surface) result in high loads of sediments and nutrients (phosphorus among others) reaching the reservoir through the Pilica River. The aim of this paper is better understanding of processes of the suspended sediment transport by the Pilica River during low and high discharges. For an analysis methods offered by statistical pattern recognition theory has been used.

Opis:
In the Upper Vistula Basin, series of check dams are located on almost each of mountain stream. These streams are strongly affected by the presence of dams that disrupt the sediment movement in the channel. Moreover, the check dams are in poor technical condition. The current study focuses on the Krzczonówka Stream, a left-bank tributary of the Raba River, where restoration works were undertaken in 2014 involving lowering of a check dam. The aim of the project was the continuity of the stream corridor for fish migration restoration. This paper aims to provide an analysis of the streambed evolution and a numerical analysis of the impact of check dam lowering and removal of sediment, previously accumulated upstream under the geomorphologic conditions in the studied stream after three years of project execution. A 1D sediment transport model was employed to estimate the areas of erosion and deposition throughout the river course. The calculations show that the thickness of the deposited sediment ranged from 0.20 up to 0.91 m at 1.5 km of the reach. The layer thickness deposited form 2.1 to 1.75 km of the reach, is rather thin; subsequently, the layer thickness increases and the highest values are reached at the area of 1.35 – 1.7 km. The local erosion is observed in 1.1 km of the reach. It is very important to note that the identified erosional and accumulation tendencies are the same at corresponding cross sections measured as calculated based on the model. This also provides a practical form of model validation. Additionally, the stream channel evolution on the base on low annual water stages in Krzczonów gauging station, located downstream the dam, indicates that the bottom has increased in this section by about 50 cm. The comparison of cross-sectional geometry in years of 2015–2016 (after flood event) shows that the stream channel moved in the transverse direction (bank erosion and deposition) and the streambed level has changed slightly. Currently, the stream channel does not seem to be in a state of hydrodynamic equilibrium. Thus, further field measurements will try to indicate when this balance is achieved.

Accurate determination of mean annual sediment load (MASL) of natural rivers will affect administrative aspects of water planning in dams. The MASL in Dez River in the southwest Iran has been considered. Sezar and Bakhtiari are its two branches. The amount of MASL was predicted by the USBR equation with three scenarios: using mean value of sediment discharge, using probabilistic classification of river flow data and using separation of wet and dry months. The results show that the USBR equation can be used to evaluate MASL in the Dez basin.

The development of industry, agriculture, and transport contributes to an increased environmental pollution by heavy metals. The aim of the study was preliminary assessment of the contents of selected metals (lead, cobalt, copper, chromium, cadmium and nickel) in the sediments of Bug river. The study comprised part of the river flowing through Poland. It was found that the Bug river sediments are not contaminated in respect to the content of tested metals. Based on the analysis of the study results, these metals can be lined up in the following order: Cr > Pb > Cu > Ni > Co > Cd. Statistical analysis showed that copper and chromium occur in Bug river sediments in forms bindings with organic matter in majority of cases. The granulometric analysis of sediments from Bug river revealed the largest percentage of two fractions: 1.0–0.2 mm with average of 47.7 ± 19.77% and 0.2–0.1 mm with average of 20.6 ± 7.7%. These are the dominant fractions with the accumulation of metals in river sediments, which has been confirmed by statistical analysis.

In order to evaluate the degree of sediment contamination by metallic trace elements in the watershed of Oued Inaouene (North-East of Morocco), samples of surface sediments were taken along the river and at the level of the Idriss 1st dam. The objective was to obtain thorough knowledge of the environment (metallic element content, organic matter content, granulometry, and pH, EC, CaCO3 content) in order to identify the degree of pollution in these sediments. The results of analysis have highlighted a contamination accentuated by Ba, Sr, P, Cu, Pb, In fact, this element is present at very high levels, with a maximum content ppm for the samples taken upstream of Oued Inaouene. This increase is related to the physicochemical conditions of the environment, despite the diversity of sources of pollutants. The analysis of hazardous heavy metals showed the values under the detection limits. The qualitative study allowed to identifying the source of contamination, it is an anthropogenic source related to the discharges of cities in vicinity of Oued Inaouene, and natural considered as the main source of pollution by trace elements of sediments that constitute an important reserve of pollutants in the environment.
