    Opis:
    An analysis of sermons 56-62bis showed that Peter Chrysologus’ doctrine of the universal resurrection of the dead is not original and exhaustive. He presented to the catechumens the two most important arguments, explaining the truth of the faith: God’s omnipotence and resurrection of Christ. Bishop of Ravenna, commenting on the phrase “credo in carnis resurrectionem” also used the analogies referring to the cyclicality of the phenomena of nature (day and night, the seasons). Despite the developed reflection on this topic in the writings of early Christian writers of the fourth and fifth centuries, Peter Chrysologus did not use the arguments defending the truth about the resurrection of the dead resulting from: the purpose of life, the human structure and justice. His sermons also lack other topics: the relationship of the universality of the resurrection to the universality of redemption (Hilary of Poitiers), reflection on the properties of the resurrected body – his spirituality (Cyril of Jerusalem, Ambrose) and comparison of its properties to the body of an angel (Hilary of Poitiers, Jerome, Augustine). There is also no biblical argument that has been used, for example in the writings of St. Irenaeus of Lyons, or in the commentary of Venantius Fortunatus to the Symbol. Despite these shortcomings, Peter Chrysologus’ comment to an article about the general resurrection of the dead, deserves to be acknowledged – it is a testimony of faith of the Church in the 5th century Ravenna and the expression of his pastoral care of the faith of the community.

    The author seeks to read the message of Is 26:19 through its context. First it is the literary context determined by the proposition of the oracles in Is 24-27. In their light one should seeks the identities of those who will be enlivened by „a dew of light”. Then it is the historical context that should be found in the experiences of the exiles who return from the Babylonian captivity, and who tend tó reconstruct their national community. This context sheds light on the eschatological problems of this prophecy. Through the image of carnal resurrection it shows the just who come back to life.

    The article focuses on the interpretation of the passive forms of the verb ἐγείρωused with reference to Jesus’s resurrection. It offers a detailed analysis of the deployment of the word in the Greek text of the New Testament as well as discusses the possibility of interpreting Greek passive forms in a reflexive way. The verb ἐγείρωappears in various contexts and it is analyzed here depending on its meaning in a given context (primarily “to raise” and “to raise someone”). When the verb means “to raise,” it is intransitive, and its passive forms should be interpreted as reflexive. When it refers to resurrection, passive forms may be interpreted in the same way, but since they refer also to other persons apart from Jesus (e.g. John the Baptist), they should be treated as passive. While Jesus – as God – could have raised himself, people could not have done the same on their own – they were raised by God. It is a theological argument, then, that plays a role here. Furthermore, it seems that when used with reference to resurrection, the verb should be treated as transitive (as corroborated by its active forms), which further justifies the interpretation of the passive forms as passive.

    The article analyzes the term οἱ νεκροί, in Rev 20,4-5. All scholars examining this text assume that the term hoi nekroi should be interpreted here literally, i.e. it denotes the dead in a physical meaning (as people who have been killed or died). However such assumption causes a variety of problems concerning especially the chronology of events described in Rev 20,1-10. This problem seems to be resolved if “the dead” are interpreted in spiritual sense (as spiritually dead).Basing on this assumption the presented paper aims to define identity of the dead in Rev 20,4-5. The presentation has been made in three stages. At the beginning the state of research has been presented. This analysis points out a necessity of another look at the term οἱ νεκροί, used in Rev 20,4-5. The second stage consists in examining the question whether the spiritual meaning of οἱ νεκροί is possible in the light of other passages of the Book of Revelation and in the context of the whole Johannine tradition (especially in the Forth Gospel). At the end the role of οἱ νεκροί in Rev 20,4-5 has been defined.

    Niniejszy artykuł omawia sposób, w jaki najwcześniejsze formy wyznania wiary w Zmartwychwstanie odwołują się do świadectwa Pisma Starego Testamentu. Analizie zostały poddane najważniejsze świadectwa wiary w Zmartwychwstanie wyrażone w aklamacjach i formułach wiary – zarówno te, w których nie pojawia się bezpośrednie odwołanie się do Pisma, jak też i te, w których można wskazać nawiązanie do określonych miejsc w Piśmie. W analizie pominięto katechezy i hymny liturgiczne, stosując w wyborze kryterium diachroniczne wskazujące na pierwszeństwo chronologiczne aklamacji i formuł wiary. Przeprowadzona analiza pozwoliła wykazać, że pierwszym punktem odniesienia dla wiary w Zmartwychwstanie nie jest Pismo, lecz świadectwo świadków, którzy spotkali Zmartwychwstałego, a więc u początku wiary w Zmartwychwstanie jest wydarzenie. Słowo Starego Testamentu samo w sobie jest niewystarczalne. Dopiero kiedy zaczyna się je odczytywać w świetle wydarzeń z życia Jezusa i w świetle Jego słów, można zacząć wskazywać na wypełnienie się Pisma w wydarzeniach paschalnych. Tak więc choć to nie Pismo jest początkiem wiary w Zmartwychwstanie, to zarazem wiara ta szuka odniesienia w Piśmie – lecz nie w pojedynczych tekstach Pisma, ale w Piśmie czytanym jako jedno wielkie świadectwo o zbawczym Bożym działaniu. W pierwszych formułach wiary w Zmartwychwstanie oraz w aklamacjach utrwalony został zarazem pewien sposób lektury Pisma, który stanowi wzorzec dla budowania argumentacji skrypturystycznej w teologii fundamentalnej, ponieważ ukazuje on, że Pismo jest tu czytane najpierw jako całość (egzegeza kanoniczna) oraz w świetle tradycji apostolskiej i z uwzględnieniem analogii wiary, na co zwraca uwagę Benedykt XVI w dokumencie Verbum Domini.
    The article explains how the oldest formulas of faith in resurrection and their acclamations relate to the Scripture. The aim of the discussion is the presentation of the relation between the confession of faith in Resurrection and the testimony of Scripture from the theologico-fundamental perspective. On this basis, the author draws conclusions concerning the role of the scriptural argument in the faith in Resurrection.

    In the vox populi of Mark 6:14-16 (cf. 8:28), we find the puzzling claim that some believed Jesus was John the Baptist raised from the dead. The presentation of John in the Gospel is similar to Jesus: Mark depicts John as a prophetic figure who is arrested, executed, buried by his disciples, and—according to some—raised from the dead. This paper reviews scholarship on the question of whether the tradition concerning John's resurrection—as well as the tradition concerning his death to which it is prefixed (6:17-29)—originated outside of the early Christian community. We examine the possibility that sects or individuals in the ancient world believed John had indeed been raised from the dead—as well as figures supposedly connected to John (Dositheus, Simon Magus). We conclude on the basis of internal evidence from the Gospel that the report in 6:14-16 likely originated in a Christian context. At the same time, it may also provide a glimpse into first-century CE attitudes concerning the resurrection from the dead.

    Opis:
    The paper contributes to the discussion regarding the Corinthian opponents of the resurrection of the dead (1 Cor 15:12). In particular, it attempts to re-examine the thesis of the Epicurean framework of this controversy. The first part focuses on the main lines of interpretation of 1 Cor 15:12 and the presentation of the Epicurean thesis. It is followed by an analysis of Paul’s polemical statements against the thesis of his Corinthian opponents, “there is no resurrection of the dead” (1 Cor 15:12; cf. vv. 19, 29-34, 35). It is assumed that Paul clearly says that his opponents deny a bodily resurrection and future life – there is nothing after death. The third part of the paper reconsiders some hermeneutic factors concerning the identity of the Corinthian opponents of the resurrection. 1 Cor 15 contains terminological and ideological parallels to Epicureanism, especially, by way of opposition. Yet, the valuation of these data remains an open question.

    Preferowaną w malarstwie katakumbowym Rzymu formą autoprezentacji, ale zapewne też upamiętnienia zmarłych chrześcijanek było przedstawianie ich w postawie modlitewnej – w pobliżu lokulusów i arkosoliów niemal na każdym kroku spotkać można było postaci kobiece, z czasem coraz bardziej zindywidualizowane i wyraziste, które modliły się, kierując ręce ku górze lub rozpościerając je na boki na wzór postawy Jezusa na krzyżu. Gest modlitewny, wyeksponowany również w portretach w formie popiersi, miał przekonywać o pobożności (pietas), jaka cechowała zmarłe chrześcijanki za życia i która pozwalała im żywić nadzieję, że za sprawą Chrystusa-Dobrego Pasterza zmartwychwstaną i osiągną życie wieczne tam, gdzie nadal trwać będą w nieustającej modlitwie (uwielbienia? dziękczynienia? błagalnej?).
    In Roman catacomb paintings, the preferred form of self-presentation, and undoubtedly also of commemoration, of deceased Christian women, was to present them in a praying position – near the loculi and arcosolia, at almost every step of the way, one could encounter female figures (over time more and more individual and expressive), who prayed by raising their hands upwards or extending them in imitation of Jesus’s posture on the cross. The prayer gesture, also displayed in portraits in the form of busts, was to convince people of the piety (pietas) that characterised these deceased Christian women during their lives, and which allowed them to hope that thanks, to Christ-the Good Shepherd they would be resurrected and achieve eternal life, where they would continue in their incessant prayer (praise? thanksgiving? pleading?).
