The purpose of this article is to draw critical attention to the use of photovoice as an anti-oppressive method in research with Aboriginal peoples. In response to the historical vulnerability of Aboriginal peoples to research that “wants to know and define the Other,” anti-oppressive methods deconstruct taken-for-granted research models and focus on privileging Indigenous voices, political integrity, and justice strategies. Anti-oppressive approaches are connected to emancipation and cannot be divorced from the history of racism. Theoretically, photovoice aligns well with anti-oppressive goals, using photographs and storytelling as a catalyst for identifying community issues towards informed solutions. Having roots in Freireian-based processes, photovoice has the goal of engaging citizens in critical dialogues and moving people to social action. Drawing on our recently completed photovoice study, Visualizing Breast Cancer: Exploring Aboriginal Women’s Experiences (VBC), we demonstrate that photovoice seems successful in enhancing critical consciousness among participants, but that outcomes may not be disruptive. While photovoice has the potential to develop counter-hegemonic anti-oppressive knowledge, this may be lost depending on how the research process is encountered; thus, we propose the implementation of a revisionary model which incorporates a culturally safe anti-oppressive lens.

Badania nad myślą Shmuela N. Eisenstadta (1923–2010) oraz te kontynuujące i rozwijające jego dziedzictwo nieustannie przybierają na sile i to w najrozmaitszych zakątkach świata. Fakt ten nie może dziwić, skoro rezultaty jego własnych obszernych badań uznawane są zazwyczaj za jeden z najważniejszych i najoryginalniejszych produktów w dziedzinie socjologii, filozofii cywilizacji, filozofii kultury, filozofii polityki i społeczeństwa drugiej połowy XX i początku XXI wieku. Wskazane przesłanki skłoniły mnie do napisania tekstu, który z założenia jest artykułem przeglądowym, tj. krytyczną prezentacją kilku istotnych wątków jednej z nowszych książek pisanych z perspektywy teorii Shmuela N. Eisenstadta, zatytułowanej Varieties of multiple modernities. New Research Design (dalej: Varieties). Książka stanowi bardzo ważny wkład do dorobku badań nad myślą izraelskiego socjologa, zarazem znacznie przekraczającą jego dziedzictwo. Jej autorzy podjęli próbę stawienia czoła najbardziej aktualnym zagadnieniom i wydarzeniom otaczającego nas świata. To, czy narzędzia, jakie dostarcza Eisenstadt, pomagają w tego typu przedsięwzięciach pozostawiam już opinii czytelnika Varieties. Książka, jako wynik projektu interdyscyplinarnego, stanowi zapewne ogromne źródło wiedzy, stąd może być inspiracją dla reprezentantów różnych dyscyplin.
Research on the thought of Shmuel N. Eisenstadt (1923-2010), as well as studies continuing and developing his ideas, is gaining traction in different corners of the world. This fact is not surprising since the results of his own extensive research are usually considered as one of the most important and original products in the field of sociology, philosophy of civilisation, philosophy of culture, as well as the philosophy of politics and society of the mid-20th and early 21st century. This article offers a critical presentation of several important threads of a recent book entitled Varieties of multiple modernities: New Research Design (hereinafter: Varieties) that engages with the theories of Shmuel N. Eisenstadt. This book is a very important contribution to work on the thought of the Israeli sociologist and it moves beyond his ideas. The authors make an attempt to face current issues and events in the world around us. Whether or not the tools provided by Eisenstadt help in this type of endeavour, I leave the readers of Varieties to judge. The book, a result of an interdisciplinary project, is a huge source of knowledge. It can be an inspiration for representatives of various disciplines.

Alongside other disciplines in social sciences, management researchers use mixed methods research more and more in conduct of their scientific investigations. Mixed methods approach can also be used in the field of production engineering. In comparison with traditional quantitative and qualitative research methods, reasons behind increasing popularity of mixed research method in management science can be traced in different factors. First of all, any particular discipline in management can be theoretically related to it. Second is that concurrent approach of mixed research method to inductive and deductive research logic provides researchers with opportunity to generate theory and test hypothesis in one study simultaneously. In addition, it provides a better justification for chosen method of investigation and higher validity for obtained answers to research questions. Despite increasing popularity of mixed research methods among management scholars, there is still need for a comprehensive approach to research design typology and process in mixed research method from the perspective of management science. The authors in this paper try to explain fundamental principles of mixed research method, its typology and different steps in its design process.
Obok innych dyscyplin w naukach społecznych, również w dyscyplinie nauk o zarządzaniu naukowcy coraz częściej korzystają z metod mieszanych w prowadzeniu swoich badań naukowych. Metody mieszane mogę również znaleźć zastosowanie w badaniach z zakresu inżynierii produkcji. W porównaniu z tradycyjnymi ilościowymi i jakościowymi metodami badawczymi, przyczyn zwiększającej się popularności mieszanych metod badawczych w naukach o zarządzaniu jest wiele. Po pierwsze każdy obszar w zarządzaniu może być teoretycznie związany z nimi. Po drugie w mieszanych metodach badawczych jednoczesne podejście indukcyjne i dedukcyjne umożliwia naukowcom generowanie teorii oraz testowanie hipotez w jednym badaniu jednocześnie. Ponadto zapewnia lepsze uzasadnienie wyboru metody badawczej i wyższą wiarygodność uzyskanych odpowiedzi na pytania badawcze. Pomimo coraz większej popularności mieszanych metod badawczych, nadal istnieje potrzeba kompleksowego podejścia do projektowania procesu badawczego z punktu widzenia nauk o zarządzaniu. W niniejszym artykule autorzy starają się wyjaśnić podstawowe zasady leżące u podstaw metod mieszanych, ich typologii i różnych etapów w procesie ich projektowania.

Obecnie od architektury jako dziedziny zawodowej oczekuje się aktywnego uczestnictwa w rozwiązywaniu aktualnych problemów środowiskowych i społecznych, a od architektury jako kompetentnej i rzetelnej dziedziny naukowej oczekuje się zwiększenia ilości badań i ich zróżnicowania w zakresie wiedzy, osiągnięć i reprezentacji dyscypliny. Analizując wyzwania, przed jakimi stoi architektura, autorzy artykułu uważają, że projektowanie, stanowiąc istotę działań architekta, może być odpowiednim narzędziem, aby odpowiedzialnie kształtować otaczające nas środowisko, a także rozwijać architekturę jako rzetelną i wiarygodną dyscyplinę badań. Projektowanie jest działalnością z natury bogatą w wiedzę. Rozważając potencjał projektowania architektonicznego jako sposobu rozwiązywania problemów charakteryzujących się wysokim stopniem złożoności, w niniejszym artykule podjęto temat dotyczący badań poprzez projektowanie. Na podstawie badań literatury, obserwacji indywidualnych przypadków oraz własnego doświadczenia zawodowego w artykule podjęto próbę określenia niezbędnych warunków do przeprowadzenia badań poprzez projektowanie oraz przedstawiono strukturę procesu projektowego, który mógłby stać się podstawą do przeprowadzenia formalnej procedury badawczej. Autorzy artykułu reprezentują stanowisko, że umocowany w metodologii proces generowania wiedzy podczas projektowania może: pełnić funkcję pomostu łączącego badania teoretyczne z praktycznymi, ograniczyć dystans pomiędzy architektem praktykiem a architektem naukowcem, pozwolić docenić wiedzę praktyczną, a także pomóc architektom świadomie zaangażować się w poprawę jakości otaczającego nas środowiska.
Currently, architecture as a professional field is expected to actively participate in solving current environmental and social problems, and architecture, as a competent and reliable scientific field, is expected to increase the amount of research and its diversification in terms of knowledge, achievements and representation of the discipline. Analyzing the challenges faced by architecture, the authors of the article believe that design, being the essence of an architect's activities, can be an appropriate tool to responsibly shape the surrounding environment, as well as to develop architecture as a reliable and credible research discipline. Designing is an inherently knowledge-rich activity. Considering the potential of architectural design as a way of solving problems characterized by a high degree of complexity, this paper deals with the topic of research by design. On the basis of literature research, observation of individual cases and own professional experience, the article attempts to define the necessary conditions for conducting research through design and presents the structure of the design process that could become the basis for a formal research procedure. The authors of the article believe that the methodology-based process of generating knowledge during design may: act as a bridge connecting theoretical and practical research, reduce the distance between an architect-practitioner and an architect-scientist, will allow to appreciate practical knowledge, and will help architects consciously get involved in improving the quality of the surrounding environment.

Background: Knowledge about diabetes mellitus (DM)-related complications, the direct and indirect costs incur red by patients with DM is still insufficient in Poland. Economedica DM-PL (Economedica) survey was a cross-sectional observational study that aimed to assess these issues. Material and methods: The survey was carried out in 2016 on a representative sample of 2032 diabetic patients recruited by 195 general practioners (GP) and 48 diabetologists (D) randomly selected from the national registry of physicians. Each GP and D recruited 8 to 10 patients with DM according to the specified protocol. The study included 1938 medical questionnaires (comple ted by the GPs and Ds), 1938 questionnaires about costs (completed by the patients) and 1532 treatment adherence questionnaires. Results: The Economedica survey provided new insights into DM epidemiological and cost data. 70% of patients with type-1 DM were diagnosed with the disease before the age of 40. For 76% patients with type-2 DM, it was diagnosed aeftr the age of 50. The average monthly out-of-pocket medical costs for DM patients in 2016 reached 66.2 EUR, while their non-medical costs were 36.8 EUR. Conclusions: The methodology applied in our study proved useful for providing new dimensions of DM epidemiological and cost data in Poland.

Leadership is a key factor in successful social movement mobilization. Without a grasp of leadership dynamics in a community, it is difficult to explain how individuals come to occupy leadership roles and what impact this has on the overall success of a movement effort. In this study, I use the qualitative approach to investigate how leadership is framed in a community facing the existence of environmental contamination. I follow the development of leadership among actors and particularly the relationships that they create and maintain with expert environmental activists. Using interview data from 35 community residents and activists, I establish how leadership frames were presented to the community and how these frames impacted mobilization efforts and outcomes.

Building teams has a fundamental impact for execution of research and development projects. Often the success of the project depends on the competence of employees implementing these projects. Therefore, it becomes essential to build the team where skills complement each other in terms of knowledge, personality and practical skills. On the other hand an important element is the process of assessing the candidate. The person dealing with recruitment often bases its decisions on intuition / subjective impression and they tend to be unreliable. The article presents a proposal to use Fuzzy AHP and TOPSIS methods in team building for R&D projects on the basis of employees skills using for this process the most well-known tool, namely spreadsheet.

The book’s target audience is postgraduate HDRs, emerging scholars and higher-degree supervisors, lecturers in methodology seeking to enhance their reflexivity. According to the authors, it is the reflexive approach that differentiates this book from other methodological books, especially those intended for researchers who are in the process of development regardless of their academic status. Among Polish methodological books there is no publication which as clearly as the book Research Paradigm Considerations… encourages the development of cognitive research curiosity by applying and developing already known paradigms but also by modifying them depending on the socio-cultural context of the research. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for practical applications of paradigms, but the subject of their research cannot be clearly categorized.

Eksploatacyjna Analiza Modalna pozwala na wyznaczenie częstotliwości drgań własnych, współczynników tłumienia modalnego oraz postaci drgań własnych dowolnej konstrukcji mechanicznej w warunkach jej rzeczywistej pracy. W artykule przedstawiono sposób przeprowadzenia badań modalnych mostu w trakcie jego normalnej eksploatacji. Głównym prowadzonych badań było wyznaczenie częstotliwości oraz postaci drgań własnych badanego mostu oraz analiza wpływu temperatury otoczenia na ich wartości. W artykule przedstawiono również sposób oceny jakości zarejestrowanych danych pomiarowych oraz ich analizy dla potrzeb estymacji parametrów modalnych badanej konstrukcji mostu.
Operational Modal Analysis allows to determine natural frequencies, modal damping ratios and mode shapes of any mechanical structure in terms of its actual work. This paper presents a method of modal testing of bridge during its normal operation. The main purpose of the researches was to determine the frequencies and mode shapes and analysis of temperature influence on their values. In the paper a method for assessing the quality of the recorded measurement data and methods for its analysis for the estimation of modal parameters are also presented.

W artykule zaprezentowano dwa metodologicznie zaawansowane projekty badania przedsiębiorczości – Globalny Monitor Przedsiębiorczości (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, GEM) oraz Panelowe Badania Dynamiki Przedsiębiorczości (Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics, PSED). Oba projekty powstały w odpowiedzi na potrzebę pozyskania materiału empirycznego wysokiej jakości, stanowiącego podstawę do przeprowadzania międzynarodowych analiz porównawczych oraz badań podłużnych. Oba projekty mają również przewagę nad oficjalnymi danymi statystycznymi, polegającą na pełnej porównywalności oraz możliwości głębszego wglądu w motywacje, postawy, zachowania i aspiracje przedsiębiorców. W artykule dokonano porównania metodologii badań w obu projektach. Przedstawiono również przykładowe możliwości tworzenia nowej wiedzy na podstawie danych empirycznych w nich zebranych, a także oceniono, w jakim stopniu odpowiadają one na zidentyfikowane zapotrzebowania badawcze. Opisano również mocne strony obu projektów, a także ich perspektywy w przyszłości.
The paper presents two methodologically advanced projects in the field of entrepreneurship – Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED). Both of them were created as an answer to the need for obtaining high-quality empirical material that could be the base for international comparisons and longitudinal analyses. Both projects also have an advantage over official statistics, namely full comparability and possibility of in-depth insight into motives, attitudes, behaviors and aspirations of entrepreneurs. In the paper a comparison of methodologies of projects is presented. I also show exemplary possibilities of creating new knowledge based on empirical data gathered in the projects and assess how they answer the identified research needs. Finally, the strengths and future perspectives of the projects are discussed.

Opis:
Purpose: Developing a procedure for the course of the research process for management science and practice. An original procedure for the course of the research process in management and quality sciences was presented. Design/methodology/approach: Based on the analysis of domestic and foreign literature, as well as the model of the research process, five stages have been defined, which should be included in the procedure of the research process. They included: selection of the research subject, determination of the nature of the research, determination of the transparency of the research purpose, selection of the method of conducting the research, determination of the size of the studied sample. Findings: Taking into account the model of the research process, a procedure for conducting research was developed. Research limitations/implications: The developed procedure is a premise for conducting further research in the direction of assigning research methods and techniques to individual elements of the research process stages in management and quality sciences. Selection of appropriate methods and research techniques will translate into the verification of research hypotheses, such as and answers to research questions. Practical implications: First of all, it is important to develop a procedure for the course of the research process for management science and practice, and then, for individual stages of this process, assign appropriate research methods and techniques. Social implications: The author's procedure for the course of the research process presented in this article is a response to how to operationalize phenomena in the sciences on management and quality and thus translate into research related to Industry 4.0. Originality/value: The developed procedure for the course of the research process allows for detailed familiarization and carrying out of scientific research, and in particular for a precise presentation of the characteristics of the tested entity, dispelling doubts regarding the transparency of the conducted research, appropriate description of the method of conducting the research, and determining the size of the research sample.

This chapter aims to provide a language learning design principle using the Learning Activity Management System (LAMS) as a platform in authentic classroom situations. A LessonLAMS sequence has been developed for this research project and was designed using a ‘Dynamic Scaffolding Technique’ within the learner’s zone of proximal development (ZPD) (Vygotsky & Cole, 1978). Participants for this study were South East Queensland secondary students who are studying Korean as a foreign language as an elective subject. The learning design of the LessonLAMS sequence was incorporated in classroom instruction with the research focus on technology-enhanced learning tasks, which was designed and implemented in the foreign language classroom at the participating school.

In the current transportation industry, especially transporting coal, sand, heavy stone, construction waste, etc., dump trucks occupy a critical position. Most traditional dump trucks can only dump goods vertically, so their manoeuvrability is not high. Especially in tight spaces such as construction sites, it causes many difficulties for loading and unloading traditional dump trucks, which takes a lot of time and effort for the driver. In this paper, we have mainly focused on solving the above difficulties. Hence a multi-dimensional dump truck model was designed. The hydraulic motor actuated by the directional valve rotates the container on the required side. This design aims to improve the features and performance of dump trucks compared to existing conventional vehicles. This concept will save operating costs & energy consumption, which leads to increased efficient working. In this study, the dump truck can rotate 1800 in both directions through a hydraulic motor and gearbox linked with slewing bearing.

In current society, smart clothing technology has become a critical way to improve the life quality of the elderly. This work conducted a category product evaluation and user demand system through the bibliometrics method, product evaluation analysis, focus group interviews and questionnaires. Based on the system, we designed smart clothing from the aspects of the clothing structure, hardware, software program and intelligent terminal platform to meet the needs of disabled elderly people and their caregivers in multiple scenarios. According to the test results of the smart clothing, the average error of temperature and humidity monitoring is 0.20℃ and 2.88%RH. The time of putting on-taking off clothing in 6 representative daily scenarios was reduced by 51.67%. The daily body checking times, uncomfortable behaviours, and the anxiety of caregivers was decreased by 42.31%, 28.52% and 74.37%. Compared with ordinary clothing, six of the eight comfort performances are basically the same, and two are slightly worse.

The article highlights the results of modern entertainment buildings design in Kielce performed by Ukrainian and Polish students. During the workshop students focused on designing modern performance architecture, in a sense of architecture-formal solutions, concept of forming the creative environment according to the demands of Polish and the world nowadays. All projects of Polish and Ukrainian students, mentioned in the article, are prepared under the guidance of Professor V. Proskuriakov, projects of the Ukrainian students also involved the Master T. Harashchak.

Learning Design is a descriptive framework for activity structures that can describe many different pedagogical methods. It is similar to music notation, which can describe many styles of music using a common format, but Learning Design needs further research to be an effective format for sharing good teaching ideas among educators. Learning Design may also provide benefits for traditional educational research through more precise descriptions of educational innovations, which could allow for better control of confounding factors, and through rich records of student performance. Effective sharing of research-based Learning Designs has great potential for the future of teaching and learning.

Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie rozwiązania dla przedsiębiorstw, wspomagającego zarządzanie kompetencjami. W artykule skupiono się na aspekcie związanym z organizacją prac w zakresie badań, projektowania, wdrażania i doskonalenia (rozwoju) systemu informatycznego System Zawodowcy. Prezentację sześcioletnich prac poprzedzono syntetycznym przybliżeniem problematyki zarządzania kompetencjami. Artykuł jest adresowany do zespołów projektowych, w skład których wchodzą pracownicy naukowi, a dodatkowo do przedstawicieli przedsiębiorstw, zwłaszcza z działów HR. System Zawodowcy (SZ), jako innowacyjne rozwiązanie metodyczne, organizacyjne i systemowe, stanowi przykład efektu działań badawczo-rozwojowych. Może być przykładem dobrych praktyk do wykorzystania przez naukowców, których celem jest nie tylko prowadzenie badań naukowych, ale również wypracowywanie rozwiązań, które mogą być wykorzystywane w praktyce.
The aim of this article is to present a solution for entrepreneurs, which supports the management of competences. It is focused on aspects of work organization in the fields of research, design, implementation and development of an IT system – System for Professionals. A summary of six years of work is preceded by a synthetic presentation of competence management issues. This article is directed at project teams, which consist of researchers, and at entrepreneur representatives, especially from HR departments. System for Professionals, an innovative, methodical, organizational and systemic solution is an example of a result of research and development activities. It serves as an example of good practices, which can be used by researchers whose aim is not only to conduct scientific research, but also to create solutions which can be used in practice.

The origin of maritime research lies in a multi‐disciplinary approach. The philosophical grounding for academic research inherently shapes the methodological approach, data collection methods adopted, and analysis techniques deployed. Thus, there is a need for an insight into the philosophical underpinnings of maritime research for better understanding of research design in maritime context. The paper will examine social science and its grounding in philosophical concepts for qualitative research, and the relevance of philosophical approach to ‘values’ in social science, to maritime research by using qualitative methods. The aim is to apprise the novice maritime researchers ‐ in simplistic language, about the philosophical approach to values, as an alternative to complex descriptions of concepts available in philosophical articles and references.

Na podstawie epistemologicznej koncepcji tworzenia wiedzy naukowej proponuję nowy sposób oceny roli metod mieszanych w badaniach: przez odniesienie ich nie tylko do poziomu publikacji, lecz także do projektu badawczego. Na przykładzie wybranych publikacji z zakresu zdrowia publicznego wskazuję dwie różne role metod mieszanych w tworzeniu nowej wiedzy: rola generatywna na poziomie projektu badawczego oraz synteza dotychczasowej wiedzy na poziomie pojedynczych publikacji.
Based on the epistemological concept of scientific knowledge creation, I propose a new way of assessing the role of mixed methods research design: by referring them not only to the level of publication but also to the research project. On the example of selected public health publications, I point to two different roles of mixed methods in the creation of new knowledge: a generative role at the level of a research project and the synthesis of existing knowledge at the level of publication.

W artykule dokonuje się analizy porównawczej różnych klasyfikacji paradygmatów nauki i nauk o zarządzaniu w aspekcie ich pragmatyczności i odpowiedniości odnośnie do badań organizacji oraz uzasadnia tezę o wysokiej użyteczności modelu badawczego zaproponowanego przez Kenetha D. Stranga. Model Stranga, oparty na koncepcji ideologii badawczych, pozwala na pokonanie teoretycznej niewspółmierności i współpracę przedstawicieli różnych paradygmatów. Artykuł zawiera ponadto refleksje odnośnie do paradygmatu jako kluczowego czynnika wpływającego zarówno na rozwój nauk o zarządzaniu, jak i na działania praktyczne w organizacjach. Wybór określonego paradygmatu, tj. ideologii badawczej, ma decydujący wpływ na wyniki badań, a także uogólnienia praktyki. Paradygmat określa strategię badawczą, dobór metod badawczych i reguł wnioskowania. Ma on też wpływ na proces edukacji, a co za tym idzie ma swój udział w kształtowaniu światopoglądu naukowców, przedsiębiorców i menedżerów.
The article presents a comparative analysis of various classifications of both sciences’ and management sciences’ paradigms in terms of their pragmatism and adequacy regarding organization research. Furthermore, the aim of the article is also to justify the thesis about the high usefulness of research model proposed by Keneth D. Strang. Strang’s model, based on the concept of researcher’s socio-cultural philosophy, allows on the one hand to overcome the theoretical incommensurability and on the other hand makes it possible for representatives of various paradigms to cooperate with each other. The article contains also reflections on the paradigm as a key factor affecting both the development of management sciences and the practice of management. The choice of a specific paradigm, i.e. research ideology, has a decisive impact on the results of research, as well as the generalization of practice. The paradigm defines the research strategy, selection of research methods and inference rules. Furthermore, it influences the education process, and thus has an impact on shaping the worldview of scientists, entrepreneurs as well as managers.
