Opis:
Aim. The study explores the importance of culture of reminiscence with its identificational and integrational potential for the society and the ways that culture of reminiscence is applied within cultural institutions by means of cultural education. Methods. We used several scientific methods such as relational and content analysis, observation, induction and heuristics. Results. The research study summarises the role of cultural institutions within the culture of reminiscence and outlines various forms of reminiscence to be observed in cultural educational programmes. It explains the potential of cultural institutions and the roles they play within collective commemorating. It has interdisciplinary and applicational character and includes practical tips for cultural managers and cultural educators. Conclusion. Collective memory is an important condition for reproduction of culture and cultural identities. Individual memory is determined by social and cultural contexts (reference to Maurice Halbwachs´s social frames of memory). Cultural education naturally works with the notions of collective memory, traditions, identity and reminiscence. At the same time, it resembles a tool by means of which cultural identity, character and collective memory of individuals and social groups can be consciously shaped. Beside identificational context, there is also a prospective integrational and inclusive potential of cultural education. Several forms of reminiscence are applied within cultural education: reminiscence as reconstruction; reminiscence as (re)interpretation; reminiscence as creation; reminiscence as prevention and civic involvement; reminiscence as a tool of forming cultural identity; reminiscence as an expert reflection.

Opis:
Reminiscence bibliotherapy is a memory-based form of reading therapy intended for the elderly. The bibliotherapy mechanism is based on three dependent stages: identification, catharsis and insight. The reminiscence themes are arranged in chronological order, reminiscing the life history strengthens the memory of the elderly, enables the expression of emotions and improves mental well-being. Bearing in mind its effectiveness, reminiscence bibliotherapy during the COVID-19 epidemic should change its form into teletherapy, focus on individual or couple therapy and be based on a standardized bibliotherapeutic program.

Mark Kac (1914-1984) was born in the then Russian and now Ukrainian city of Kremenec, also the birthplace of the renowned violinist Isaac Stern. In 1922, when he was eight years old, the town became part of Poland and assumed the name Krzemieniec. Because he received virtually all of his education in Polish and was a Polish citizen on arriving, in 1938, in the United States, he always considered himself to be of Polish origin, though the truth is more complicated.

Tomasz Merta
Generalny Konserwator Zabytków
Opis:
“…Heritage is a great national treasury, which stores absolutely everything that influenced and continues to affect the moulding of our identity…” Tomasz Merta, Nieodzowność konserwatyzmu. W odpowiedzi Timothy’emu Snyderowi, „Res Publica Nowa”, listopad 1997, nr 126, s. 54. When five years ago Minister Tomasz Merta was appointed General Conservator of Historical Monuments, our milieu assumed an anticipatory stand and full of uncertainty observed how he would fulfil this function. He was expected to tackle the increasingly complicated situation of the Service for the Protection of Historical Monuments, serious problems emerging and surrounding us on all sides, the prominent battle for “centralisation”, suspended in a void, insufficient staff, low wages, and the relegation of our difficulties by the world of politics to the margin… We were anxious about the time needed to introduce a person “from another world” to our specific concerns. After all, he was totally unfamiliar with them and with us – who had shared years of joint debates, conferences and confrontations concerning differently comprehended but ultimately similar causes, and involved in the welfare of historical monuments. Tomasz Merta managed to overcome this barrier, observing the people around him and seeking those whom he could trust, and whose opinions could be regarded as objective and free from egoism, and for whom concern for historical monuments was an actual priority. He did so in an extremely discreet manner, but consistently. As an excellent and keen observer, he was interested in learning about the situation of the conservation milieu. Tomasz Merta treated the Council for the Protection of Historical Monuments very seriously – as an advisory and auxiliary body and not as an obstacle. He always attended its sessions, and whenever his multiple duties made it possible he participated from the beginning to the very end. Already during his first term in office, once he realised just how many problems he was compelled to face and how serious was the overall situation, he invited the Council for longer meetings. Separated from the greenery and tranquillity of the Radziejowice palace park by a white curtain fluttering in the breeze, we spent long summer afternoons discussing fervently every issue possible. Upon certain occasions, our meetings produced heated disputes. Minister Merta calmly listened to all the arguments, at times giving the impression of being deeply lost in thought and as if only partially present. He never took notes, but at the end summed up the hourslong discussion by analysing all the mentioned questions, referring them to a wider backdrop of social phenomena and proposing a synthesis. The aptness of his conclusions was always astonishing! Upon the occasion of assorted conferences and a joint celebration of the International Day of Historical Monuments, Tomasz Merta made speeches – these were by no means the glib words of a politician or populistic praises of the milieu. Each time, he touched upon the most essential aspects of the protection of the national heritage, its determinants and the relations between the monument and society, trying to understand, deliberate and refer to the topics of current discussions. His words were not conceived as instruction or an attempt at an arbitrary solution of controversial issues. These were the subtle reflections of an intellectual, presented in the manner of essays about our connections with historical monuments and obligations towards them. Each speech went further and dealt with new areas. I am well aware of the fact that I was not the only person eagerly awaiting his next statement. When in April 2009 we met in Leżajsk to analyse the significance of authenticity, competent opinions were interspersed with highly contentious declarations. Half a year later, in Toruń, Minister Merta returned to the value of the authenticity of historical monuments and the original. This time, he went a step further. He discreetly reminded his listeners, tired of daily battles waged for salvaging monuments from greed, and frequently simply from a lack of common sense, that not only original qualities are of importance. The Minister spoke about the significance of history recorded in each monument, and recalled the relevance of the preservation of their authentic form so that they would document the time of their origin as well as the time that had passed since. This is the time in which they coexisted with generations of our ancestors and amassed and recorded traces of war, neglect or respect and care. In this subtle way he expanded our field of observation and, for all practical purposes, delineated successive tasks. Tomasz Merta appreciated the value of authenticity He also understood the essence of protection and the fact that this was a joint task – both ours and his. Tomasz Merta told us that conservation never ends, and that the ideas of refurbishing and preservation are eternal. He was disturbed by the fact that contemporary times alter the relations between people and objects, and that man’s attitude towards things is becoming nonchalant and arrogant – this is the reason why so many would like to replace the old with the new. He considered this particular feature of social transformations as extremely dangerous for the realisation of our mission of protection. When in November 2008 we met in Wojanów to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Service for the Protection of Historical Monuments, the prevailing mood was despondent. Only conservators were present. Enclosed within our own milieu, we presented successive recollections and reflections, proving to ourselves that we are but a diminutive particle of society, albeit important, hard working and with imposing accomplishments. Minister Merta managed to join us in the late evening, straight from Paris, although being quite ill he should have gone home. He knew, however, that he could not leave us alone in those circumstances. On his part, this was a magnificent gesture of respect to the whole conservation milieu. While engaged in political battles for the protection of historical monuments, and especially against the ill-fated “centralisation”, he encountered considerable obstacles. The tendency to relegate culture to the margin, especially in the case of the requirements of conservation, was the reason why the target, which upon several occasions he appeared to be so close to attaining, suddenly became distant and everything had to be commenced anew. Each time, Minister Merta was ready to hand in his resignation – he was crushed by successive failures. Not always were we capable of appreciating his efforts aimed at guaranteeing historical monuments and our milieu the suitable interest of legislators and representatives of state administration. With incredible culture, reserve, tact and calmness he explained to us the complicated labyrinths of ministerial offices, the principles of and reasons for his own conduct, and the political conditions decisive for our situation. We trusted him because his activity incessantly confirmed that all his endeavours were ultimately pursued for the sake of historical monuments. Tomasz Merta was greatly concerned with the fate of the conservation services staff, He considered our humiliating wages to be one of many degrading factors, and thus was greatly pleased when at the beginning of 2009 he finally managed to achieve considerable salary rises. His sensitivity, culture and unique intellect were the reasons why every meeting with him and every conversation proved to be a fascinating and enhancing event. Now, his sudden loss came as a painful experience to all…

The reminiscence of literary Gothicism, that reappeared in the time of neoromanticism becoming, next to neo-Baroque infl uences, a component of the Ukrainian modernism, also appeared in the small prose by Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky. This excellent writer applies Gothic novel convention in his works. He constructs the atmosphere of horror, puts his characters in a critical situation in order to indicate increasing social problems and to intensify the psychologism of his works. He deserves the title of the Ukrainian psychological prose master and a fully modern European author.

The basis for this article is the film Róża (Rose), directed by Wojtek Smarzowski. The author reads the aforementioned film as a historic tale of the ‘Recovered Territories’ (territories that became part of Poland after the Second World War), and, at the same time, the representation of the Other, post-war autochthonic experience of Masurians. Where, in the memory discourse, does the film place Masurians? In what way does it bring their tragic history back to the Polish collective memory? Who benefits from recovering this collective memory? Whilst searching for answers, the author uses the notion of melodrama as a sorting key for cinema image notions.

CHOJNACKI JAKUB
MAZOVIA - PLOCK
Opis:
If we were to seek an exemplary model of a genuine regionalist then Jakub Chojnacki would be our ideal candidate. This native of Mazovia and a resident of Plock was actually neither born in Plock nor settled down there of his own choice; nonetheless, he devoted all his skills to the town, becoming a true local patriot. J. Chojnacki spent several score years in the Scientific Society of Plock, acting as its secretary, vice-chairman,chairman (for 34 years), and honorary chairman; in his capacity as the vice-president of Plock he made it possible for hundreds or even thousands of people to enjoy decent living conditions, was engaged in the current issues of the town, and showed concern for its development and the welfare of the residents. Moreover, J. Chojnacki inspired numerous scientific sessions and organized meetings, discussions and symposia not only on the most relevant problems of the town but also about wider-scale - Polish and European - questions. Perceived by his colleagues and those close to him as a symbol of the science and culture of the capital of Mazovia, a true embodiment of effective initiatives promoting the environment, the town and the region, dr. J. Chojnacki far exceeded traditional forms of activity. He attached particular importance to monuments of the past, especially those of Plock, and all sorts of historical souvenirs, devoting his tireless energy to obtaining them and sharing his enthusiasm with others. He managed to achieve an almost impossible feat - his consistent and outright obstinate efforts enabled the western portal of the local cathedral to feature a replica of the Plock Door, lost centuries ago, a monument reflecting the place of the town on the map of European twelfth-century culture. This indubitably greatest accomplishment among the multiple undertakings pursued by Jakub Chojnacki will be gratefully recalled both by Plock and the country as a whole. The distinctive personality of Jakub Chojnacki shall remain a part of the modern history of Plock and Mazovia; his energy, integrity and characteristic ability to combine the past and the present shall be missed by all.

There is evidence (archaeological, historical, linguistic, iconographic, ethnological and other mentioned in this article) to show that the formation of the myth of the Amazons could be a result of observations of habits of Iranian nomads who used to live in the areas of the northern coast of the Black Sea and Central Asia in Antiquity. Some datum indicates that women from these communities (as in many other groups of nomads) had a much higher social status than in many settled communities such as the ancient Greeks and Romans. Women in the Iranianspeaking nomadic communities were likely to participate in hunting and, to some limited extent, in fighting. In addition, some of them might have become the heads o f these groups as queens (that is not as wives of kings but as independent rulers). All o f it influenced the imagination of people from Greek culture who had met the nomads. Stories about these warrior women spread into Greek ecumene, increasingly evolving and subject to distortion, thus affecting the myth of the Amazons. The Amazons in Greek mythology and art often have nomadic features - they ride on horseback, wear bows and “Scythian” costumes and weapons. Tales of warlike women did not only contribute to the mythology of the ancient world, but they were inherited by Turkic-speaking groups and are still present in the culture of Iran.

Cleopatra VII
popular culture
Egypt
reminiscence of antiquity
Opis:
For more than two thousand years Cleopatra has been an inspiration of artists. At the turn of the 20th and 21st century she became one of the icons of our (European) perception of Egypt. She is certainly better known than the builders of pyramids or Ramesses the Great, and she is remembered better than the names of ancient rulers. One may even venture to claim that although little is known, she is a familiar, not to say clichéd figure. One needs to consider what hides behind the representations of Cleopatra we encounter everyday in various aspects of popular culture-advertising, products of daily use, television. In my opinion, we only perceive the picture contrived by Octavian and the writers devoted to him-a femme fatale of the antiquity, an ambitious and ruthless temptress. Horace, Propertius, Florus and Pliny conveyed in their works an image of Cleopatra which met Octavian Augustus’ expectations: of a woman defeated in the eyes of the victor. A cursory read of their works in the 18th century, in the wake of renewed interest in antiquity following the discovery of Pompeii and Herculanum, led to uncritical repetition of Cleopatra’s depiction-first, in the historiography, and then in popular culture. Stereotypes concerning Egypt developed, reinforced by the descriptions of travelers. In the light of the latter, the country appears a quintessence of the Orient, with all its riches and delights. The figure of the last queen of ancient Egypt suited such notion perfectly. The most interesting issue is that today, when through archeological and historical research Cleopatra’s life became known in greater detail, the popular culture, advertising and cinematography in particular, keeps on perpetuating the stereotypical representation of this extraordinary woman. I incline towards the views of M. Krajewski, who claims that popular culture has become a lens sifting reality, and in striving to become an integral element of reality, it selects whatever is helpful (discarding the rest). The answer to the question of whether the image of Cleopatra originates from sources or stems from our stereotypes of Egypt, is, I think, a complex one. It was precisely the superficial reading of sources rediscovered, as it were, in the 18th century, that brought forth the stereotypes, whose reverberations in popular culture of the 20th and the 21st century created a specific picture of the last Egyptian queen. The “present–day” picture of Cleopatra is in a way a remote echo of Augustian propaganda, whose charm still holds sway over us. I wished to demonstrate this dependence by showing various aspects of popular culture, from press to cosmetics. Popular culture adopted those features of Cleopatra that help sell merchandise-youth, amorous intrigue, alleged beauty and murder. We cannot escape the influence she exerts on us and our lives, yet what lies beneath the facade of a pretty face with a ureus-adorned temples deserves consideration. In the case of Cleopatra VII it is a fascinating history of life and death of one of the most influential women of her times.

The aim of the paper is to analyze Franz Liszt's piano interpretations that constitute excellent operatic transcriptions and reminiscences from the operas of Gaetano Donizetti. There are seven piano works based on six of Donizetti’s operas, among them bar-for-bar transcriptions of particular fragments as well as masterly syntheses of many musical themes. We try to argue that Donizetti was an inspiration for Liszt and that the Hungarian composer was not only an eminent connoisseur and admirer of bel canto, but also made an important contribution to the rediscovery of Italian opera. These transcriptions are an excellent example of a sincere tribute from one great composer to another; they highlight some of the treasures among Donizetti’s compositions, as well as the talent of the author of the transcriptions.

The article deals with the absorption of Nikolai Gumilyov’s poetics and biographical legend in Vladimir Nabokov’s short story “Port”. The great importance of Gumilyov’s works and personality for the emigre writer makes it possible to classify Nikitin, the protagonist of the story, as a heroic type, whose features go back to the mythologized image of Gumilyov. The author of the article argues that the plot of the story displays semantic similarities with Gumilyov’s poem “Conversation”. The analysis of the two works allows one to discover further possible parallels with Gumilyov, which are actualized in the structure of the story (in motifs and imagery). The author comes to the conclusion that such forms of borrowing are on the part of Nabokov a conscious artistic strategy.

Prof. Irena Swaczyna, PhD, was an eminent specialist in the field of historic; art, craft and technology of wooden objects and objects which have wood in them, but foremost she specialized in historical wooden furniture. In 1993 she defended her habilitation thesis at the Faculty of Wood Technology at the Warsaw University (if Life Sciences (SGGW). She received the title of professor in 2001. She was the thesis supervisor of two doctoral dissertations and the examiner of 14, she was also the thesis advisor of ca. 160 diploma theses. Being the co-creator of the historic wood conservation and restoration specialization at the Faculty of Wood Technology, and serving as the head of Academic Council of this specialization, she designed its teaching programs and organized the didactic process. She cooperated with many museums. She was an excellent educator who was whole-heartedly devoted to students with whom she was able to engage in a discourse free from generation animosity. What she valued most was the mission of academic teaching, whose aim - according to her, and in conformance with the program of historic wood conservation and restoration specialization - was saving the Polish cultural heritage, present in all the work crafted in wooden material.

Opis:
The article presents the process of individual, personal “memory work”. It concerns the traces of collective and individual military experience (something like post-traumatic stress disorder) in literary notation. It is interesting how the military trauma of the Italian campaign is revealed in the narrative, how it “tells” in the changing phases of the performance. The nature of this process is very difficult to describe (“fix” the experience and “blur” it, “constructing individual fate” and “denying reality”, “mythologizing facts” and “displacing the real”): it varies, opalesces in subsequent creative transformations.

Opis:
For a model of nostalgic memory in the poetry of Czesław Miłosz, based on the psychological phenomenon of reminiscence, an allegoric counterpart can be identified in the hologram metaphor (Douwe Draaisma). The question: “Who am I” – reappears in Miłosz’s late lyrical poetry when he ponders over both his biography and the biographies of others. The response is provided, for instance, in the concept of human dialectic biography (of subject and object), formulated by Paul Ricoeur in his philosophical analyses. Human memory remains equally dialectic, placed in the antinomy between memory and oblivion. Still, retrieving a detail which has been remembered evokes all experience along with its rich context. That is the holographic effect, described in literature as the “ghost image”. Also in poetry, the effacing of memory trace does not make a barrier for the restitution of recollection. “The Sun of Memory” beams through the lyric of the author of the collection of poems “This”.

Opis:
In the end of the 19th century political situation in the Far East was tense and uncertain. China being afraid of the repeated Japanese aggression signed the agreement with Russia allowing to establish a Russian military naval base at Port Arthur (close to today’s Dalian) and agreed for the construction of Chinese Eastern Railway through the territory of Manchuria. This railway was dedicated to connect the Transsiberian Railway with Vladivostok, the Russian port on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. At the early stage of the history of the Chinese Eastern Railway many Polish engineers held important positions in the railway construction administration with Stanisław Kierbedz as its vice-chairman and manager. Adam Szydlowski, who was the founder of Harbin, held the main position in the railway administration. Among the management of the 21 sections of the railway the majority were Polish engineers, former constructors of Transsiberian Railway. The author cites some fragments of the reminiscences of one of these engineers – Stefan Offenberg, who was in Manchuria at the time of Boxer Uprising. These reminiscences were included into a very rare album, published in Harbin in 1923 on the 25th anniversary of the Chinese Eastern Railway (on the eve of its factual overtaking by the Soviet authorities).

Opis:
W ciągu stuleci zakres semantyczny stopniowo ewoluował w kierunku współczesnego uzusu, eksponującego materialne konotacje wyrazu: pamiątka oznacza rzecz, która odnosi do przeszłości.
A history of meaning of the term (in Polish) starts with synonymous significances to ‘memory,’ ‘commemoration’ and ‘reminiscence.’ Over the centuries the semantic scope was gradually evolving to the contemporary use exposing material connotations of the word: a keepsake means an object that refers to the past. Comprehended in this way, keepsakes might encompass family heirlooms, national memorials, relics, trophies, gifts (donated „in memory”) and tourist souvenirs. One should include to this enumeration – as relatively separated categories – medial keepsakes that are results of commemorative reification of a message and corporal keepsakes that relate to permament changes in body (tattoos, scars, etc.). Every approach places a keepsake in a context of time, past and memory. A stuff has the characteristics of a keepsake as long as it takes an emotional attitude to the past. Generally, keepsakes belong to orders of private or collective memory and can move between them. It also means that in appriopriate circumstances keepsakes can migrate from category to category: e.g. some of trivial souvenirs can increase their value in time and became estimable family heirlooms; in turn some of family heirlooms can be promoted to the status of venerable national memorial.
