Opis:
Several methods applied in the Department of Regional Geography of Warsaw University in research on the relationship between the natural environment and man were presented: chi-squared test, class diversification method, correlation methods, regression analysis. Their merits and limitations were described. The usefulness for research of different aspects of the nature-man relationship was discussed. New possibilities of applying thus obtained results (e.g. for delimitation of regions of the nature-man relationship) were identified.

Opis:
Research activity at the Department of Regional Geography in the past 50 years has been reviewed in the context of the geographical thought of the 20th century, subdivided into the following categories: methodology, research, encyclopedias, monographic studies, manuals, as well as bibliographical, cartographical and onomastic works. As far as methodological works are concerned, one should mention, first of all, a new approach to, and the very idea of the subject and objectives of regional geographical studies, developed at the Department in the late 1970s. The crucial point of the new approach was seeking relations between the natural environment and man and his activities in different regions, while applying various methods for analyzing the relationships. Other methodological works concerned such issues as for example: links between certain geographical issues (political borders, globalization processes) and regional geography, various details relating to methods and approaches, principles governing research in regional geography and some methodological problems relating to geography and environmental protection. From the moment the Department of Regional Geography of Warsaw University was established till the early 1970s, its research studies were dominated by social and economic problems, including population studies, studies on the Polish community abroad, on migration and urbanization, economic activity, as well as regional and economic development in various parts of the world. Very many studies dealt with geographical rural problems in non-Polish territories. Historical, political and cultural geography was also frequently approached. Since the mid-1960s, research studies have been mainly focused on relations betweens human activity and the natural environment, which became the dominant subject in the subsequent years. These subjects, analyzed from different perspectives, were dealt with not only by research staff in their publications, but also, with a few exceptions, by students writing their MA theses, thus contributing to the overall academic achievement of the Department. This concurrence, or rather subordination of one of the most important teaching elements to basic academic research, should be emphasized in this context. In regional geography, relationships are perceived in terms of spatial (and sometimes, also temporal) coexistence of natural and socio-economic phenomena, a prerequisite for examining causal relationships between the natural environment and the domain of human activity. The following research assumptions adopted in regional geography provide the theoretical grounds for these relations: factors confining human activity, diversification as a common attribute of the natural environment, with impact on man and his activity, a chain of intermediate man environment interconnections, changing character of these interrelations in time, their dual and bi-directional nature. Various statistic methods are used in examining spatial co-appearance of some of the features of the natural environment and the corresponding features of the socio-economic sphere. On the part of the natural environment, these interrelationships were analyzed in terms of its diversification, its usefulness with respect to various human activities, impact of its individual qualities, existing limits and barriers of physical and geographical character, impact of changes of the environment and, finally, its degradation. On the part of the socio-economic phenomena, the following aspects were taken into consideration: population density, deployment and durability of settlements, various issues related to agriculture and land use, density and character of communication and transportation systems, tourism and tourist facilities, economic development and its attributes. Research activity of the Department of Regional Geography is evidenced by a total of 163 chosen published studies.

Opis:
Contemporary geography is experiencing a crisis as a school subject, in light of the changes in the education system, which are being implemented in Poland since the 1990s. This is reflected by geographic atrophy – lack of a coherent and synthetic thinking exhibited by students of primary and lower secondary schools. New school subject – natural science –caused the loss of the original holistic nature of geography. Currently, in order to meet the expectations of the labor market, geography became the subject socially marginalized, which is reflected in the reduction of teaching hours; number of “non-geography majors”; and in the attitude of pupils and parents. With this state of things even the geographers themselves have come to terms. They are the ones, however, who should look back and remind themselves of the power of geography as a subject in the past. Wacław Nałkowski wrote in 1907 that geography allows you to think scientifically, perceive aesthetically, and act practically. Along with history it constitutes the “real” in “reality” and allows us to take from it what is important to us. We should therefore return to the regional geography, to typological descriptions of landscape, promoted by the canonical authors of modern geography.

Opis:
Studies on the relations between natural conditions and human activity have been for a long time one of the main subjects of geographical research. The natural conditions of the distribution of population and settlement have been studied along two lines: historical-geographical - mostly by historians as a part of the methodology of the humanities, and the antropogeographical, which after the time of prosperity at the turn of the 19th century, began to decline, and, at present, is almost completely abandoned. One of the weaknesses of the antropogeographical research was the use of the measurable research methods to insufficient degree. At the end of the 60s at Warsaw University (B. Dumanowski with his team) the cartometrical and statistical studies on the problems of natural conditions of settlement which were based on the methodology of natural science were undertaken. It was found that a greater diversity of the environment and the physico-geographical borders favour, in general, the location and evolution of settlement, however the influence of these factors varies much according to the local circumstances. Besides the publications with measurable results of research, about one hundred Master's theses have been written. All that has constituted a sort of experimental range in the research of the Team, where the new approaches and methods were tested, regarding various areas and the degree of generalization and scales of the source maps used for research. The continuation of geographical research of the problems is justified and needed because of the long-year tradition of such studies in the field of geography and abundance of works on the matter, as well as the increasing tendency to conduct the interdisciplinary research. Such studies respond to the social demand which appears in connection with the globalization of the human civilization activity and its increasing pressure on Nature.

Opis:
The concept of regional geography as a science examining the relations between man and the natural environment is presented. Spatial coexistence of natural and socio-economic phenomena is a premise to search for causative relations. Their theoretic fundaments are described by the principle of factors limiting human activity, diversification as the general characteristic of the natural environment having impact on man and his activity, the principle of indirect chain links, changeability of relations in time and their interactions. Among others, correlation and regression analysis, the class differences method and tests of independence are used in research on the concordance of spatial coexistence of characteristics of the natural environment and socio-economic characteristics. The issue of the relations between man and the environment, examined on different scales, is associated with issues of the geographic region. A region may be perceived as an area characterized by a similarity of relations between the natural environment and human activity.

Opis:
This article is a continuation of the same authors' study entitled 'Concepts And Delimitation Of The World's Macro-Regions' prepared for the 1/2018 of this journal (Anděl et al. 2018). The main aim of the first part was an evaluation of the concepts and factors which have been used as a basis for the delimitation of the different macro-regions of the world. In this second part, the authors propose their own macro-regionalisation of the world this is a combination of four concepts, with relatively different contents: those of De Blij and Muller (1997), Cole (1996), Huntington (1996) and Hampl (2009). This macro-regionalisation arises from sociocultural affiliation, economic interrelationships and territorial continuity. Along with the concept of the macro-regional differentiation of the world itself, we focus on evaluating the importance of the shaping of macro-regions, as well as assessing the positive and negative features of individual concepts and their influence on the macro-regional differentiation of the world.

The authors focus on the current differentiation of the world and on its cognitive, application and educational frameworks and importance for the present. Macro-regional differentiation of the world has resulted from geographic concepts and it is a foundation for understanding the global development of society. This article evaluates the specific concepts and factors that form concepts of world macro-regions prepared by famous authors. It also presents a methodological approach for macro-regional forming of the world. After a theoretical and methodological introduction there is a discussion of the differentiation of the world entitled “Macroregional differentiation of the world - formation and application.ˮ The authors also present their conception of world differentiation and evaluation of the creation macro-regions and their positive and negative influence of the macro-regional differentiation of the world.
