Christensen has defined a generalization of the property of being of Haar measure zero to subsets of (abelian) Polish groups which need not be locally compact; a recent paper of Hunt, Sauer, and Yorke defines the same property for Borel subsets of linear spaces, and gives a number of examples and applications. The latter authors use the term "shyness" for this property, and "prevalence" for the complementary property. In the present paper, we construct a number of examples of non-shy Borel sets in various groups, and thereby answer several questions of Christensen and Mycielski. The main results are: in many (most?) non-locally-compact Polish groups, the ideal of shy sets does not satisfy the countable chain condition (i.e., there exist uncountably many disjoint non-shy Borel sets); in function spaces $C(^ω 2,G)$ where G is an abelian Polish group, the set of functions f which are highly non-injective is non-shy, and even prevalent if G is locally compact.

Preview: Bergson noted that the cinematographic image does not really move. It is, then as now, a series of still photographs. The real motion in such images is produced by machinery, which imparts a kinesis, an energy of movement, to the succession of fixed images. Our perception then endows such images with their “life,” insofar as they can be said to possess life. It is an illusion, it is “virtual” both as space and time. The real duration, as generated by the machinery or as lived by the perceiver is part of a broader system of images that includes those still photographs and their succession. Images of images of images, by the time they are processed by our bodies and appear to our mind’s eye as inhibited acts we have not enacted.

It seeped down from theoretical physics through the social sciences, as “the problem of the observer”, then to popular culture and finally into the daily vocabularies of the developed world. The effort simultaneously to know both the position and velocity of a sub-atomic particle became a symbol of the way that all of our efforts to know are disturbed by the very effort we exert in the task.

The prevalence of permutations with infinite cycles

Opis:
A number of recent papers have been devoted to the study of prevalence, a generalization of the property of being of full Haar measure to topological groups which need not have a Haar measure, and the dual concept of shyness. These concepts give a notion of "largeness" which often differs from the category analogue, comeagerness, and may be closer to the intuitive notion of "almost everywhere." In this paper, we consider the group of permutations of natural numbers. Here, in the sense of category, "almost all" permutations have only finite cycles. In contrast, we show that, in terms of prevalence, "almost all" permutations have infinitely many infinite cycles and only finitely many finite cycles; this set of permutations comprises countably many conjugacy classes, each of which is non-shy.

Our culture has become a “post-culture,” we believe, in a sense to be defined here. It is hard enough to say what one means by “culture,” so the challenge of describing what “post-culture” means will be greater. It should be attempted because there has been a deep-seated change, in recent decades, in how human beings interpret themselves. The rate of change has accelerated even in just the last ten years. We create culture for many lesser reasons, but the over-arching reasons for our efforts all relate to knowing who and what we are and why we exist at all – what is our purpose? Culture is our attempt to address both our hopes and doubts.

The keepers of the humanities in every generation must consider all three sorts of change and adjust to them as required for the flourishing (or at least the maintenance) of humanistic thought as a presence and an active factor in civilization. The very rapidity of the current changes makes that duty a difficult one in the present. The concomitant result may fairly be called an emerging crisis in education in the US, and the situation is likely to spread to Europe and to the rest of the world where educational institutions are obliged to exist alongside of corporate-dominated capitalism. The tendency toward the welfare state in many nations will slow and perhaps counteract these problematic developments, but it is fair to say that the more powerful corporate capitalism becomes, and the more it absorbs the political machinery of the nation state to its ends, the more difficulty the educational establishment will encounter in maintaining the kind of education that is more than mere training of persons for service to the corporate machinery. Obviously, the humanities, as they have existed historically, do not seem to be necessary to the coming corporatized university.

We analyze and cite applications of various, loosely related notions of uniformity inherent to the phenomenon of (multiple) recurrence in ergodic theory. An assortment of results are obtained, among them sharpenings of two theorems due to Bourgain. The first of these, which in the original guarantees existence of sets {x,x+h,$x+h^{2}$} in subsets E of positive measure in the unit interval, with lower bounds on h depending only on m(E), is expanded to the case of arbitrary finite polynomial configurations in subsets of positive measure in cubes of $ℝ^{n}$. The second is a direct computation of a lower bound, uniform in a and b and depending only on ∫f, for ∫f(x)f(x+at)f(x+bt)dxdt, where 0≤f≤1 is a function on the 1-torus. Our methodology parallels that of Bourgain, who originally considered the case a=1, b=2.

Edith Stein and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, were both twentieth century ‘martyrs,’ who experienced personal loss and suffering. However, it was suffering for others, deliberately chosen and consciously endured, that was of theological significance for both of them. This paper seeks to demonstrate that for Stein and Bonhoeffer suffering was understood by them as providing an essential example or model of Christian discipleship and that both utilised the expression Stellvertretung—vicarious suffering—to describe this. This theological interpretation of suffering for others illustrates a fundamental ecclesial reality which is of ecumenical significance because of its Christological significance, which is why such suffering transcends confessional and denominational differences and is of paradigmatic significance. Furthermore, this paper will suggest that both Stein and Bonhoeffer understood that the Christian disciple, in vicarious suffering, becomes a Schuldübernahme: a bearer of the sins of others.

While paper armor was by no means invulnerable, provided an inexpensive defense against swords, arrows, spears and even muskets for over a thousandyears.

Aleksandr Dugin is sometimes called “Putin’s brain,” and there can be no question that Putin’s global strategy for expanding Russian power has followed quite precisely a strategic plan created, published, and advocated by Dugin beginning in 1996. This aggressive plan of political destabilization, economic hostage-taking, and ultimately militaristic invasions has been defended with a philosophical patchwork called “the Fourth Political Theory.” Dugin claims his “National Bolshevism” can stand alongside communism, fascism, and liberalism as a genuine contender in ontology, the philosophy of history, and political philosophy; and that it is the only theory that stands in genuine opposition to neo-liberalism and corporate capitalism. I show that this view, built from a distortion of Heidegger’s idea of “human-being” as Dasein, is not a coherent philosophy or worldview. I contrast it with personalism, which has always opposed the very aspects of communism, fascism, and liberalism that Dugin opposes, and does so quite effectively and without militarism, expansionism, or the need to take the nation state as some final end of human political development.

Both, simple pseudo-sociological reductions and excessive academic textualizations are ineffectual for analyses of literary artifacts and intellectual creativity. Usually philosophers worry about the existence of mind, or consciousness, or persons, or other difficult-to-explain phenomena. Having posited matter or nature, or fields, they wonder where can person or consciousness originate? This kind of thinking is backward. Only persons ask such questions. Persons exist. I turn the tables on the traditional problem of person by asking whether anything impersonal really exists. I argue that the impersonal almost exists, using the theory of feeling of Max Scheler and supplementing it with insights from Alfred North Whitehead and Josiah Royce. Even though feeling almost succeeds in divesting itself of the pre-supposed act of the person, but its concrete actuality blocks such complete self-abstraction.

The various efforts to put the idea of humanity on a secure ethical, political, and social base have not succeeded. The various post-humanist and transhumanist programs are inadequate. Our deep-seated suspicion of our deepest selves and motives is understandable in light of the barbarity of the twentieth century, but humanism is not to blame. The thought of Ernst Cassirer holds a framework for a new humanism, once it is rid of certain colonialist, triumphalist, and Eurocentric ideas that distorted Cassirer’s understanding of the European role in creating the problems of civilization, especially its mistake of thinking that science was a progressive symbolic form of culture. I set out the basis of a new humanism based upon not the problem of knowledge, but the problem of genuine self-situating socialty, a personalist point of view.

Popular culture is a vital part of the philosophy of culture. Immersion in the world of popular culture provides an immanent understanding, and after all, some of what is merely popular culture today will be the high culture of tomorrow. The genre of science fiction is one of the more important and durable forms of cultural and social (and even religious) criticism. Science fiction narratives guide our imaginations into the relation between the might-be and the might-have-been. The central idea of this paper is that possibilities have an existence that is intelligible to us, independent of and indifferent to actualities, and involving a distinction between “constellated possibilities” which form a pattern dependent upon one’s perspective in some actual standpoint, and “clustered” possibilities, which actually exist entangled and inseparable from one another, as possibilities. Science fiction writers intuitively know that if one introduces a variation into the present in order to trace a plausible alternative storyline from that standpoint, certain other variations will have to accompany the chosen variation in order to maintain the unity of the plot. I use Rod Serling, the creator of the legendary series The Twilight Zone, as an example in this paper. Hence, science fiction writers do work with clusters as well as constellations of possibilities (things that merely might happen and things that almost assuredly will eventually happen), and they experience the clusters with a stronger feeling of necessity. I call that feeling Wirkungsschicksal, of “effective destining.” I will develop this distinction and that stronger feeling of necessity into a method for the philosophy of culture.

This review essay takes a method from Giambattista Vico and applies it to the interpretation of Laurent Binet’s portrayal of Umberto Eco in his novel The Seventh Function of Language (2015). Comparing the character of Eco with the thought of the historical Eco we find coincidences and other angles at incidence that reveal some portion of Binet’s underlying interpretation of Eco, and it limits.

EURIPA (European Rural and Isolated Practitioners Association) is a regional rural health network, which was founded by family doctors to address the health and well-being needs of rural communities, on one hand, and the practitioners’ needs across Europe, on the other. EURIPA began its activity in 1995 with a small group of family doctors from across Europe, and in 1997 the structure was formalised into that of EURIPA today. EURIPA was initially recognized by WONCA Europe as a special inter- est group and subsequently as a representative network for rural family doctors across Europe. Now, it actively participates in WONCA Europe meetings and their annual conferences. The constitution was revised in 1997 when the International Advisory Board was created to support the work of EURIPA and its Executive Committee. EURIPA has worked hard to raise the profle of rural general practice, from its frst research project in 1997, to the series of Annual Rural Health Forums, which started in 2010. These forums have focussed on quality, education and research with the 5th Forum taking place in September 2014 focussing on policy engagement. EURIPA uses social media to engage its membership and publishes regular newsletters - “Grapevine”, as well as encourages rural GPs to publish in the European Section of the Journal of Rural and Remote Health.
EURIPA została początkowo uznana przez WONCA Europe (World Organization of National Colleges, Academies and Academic Associations of General Practitioners/Family Physicians) jako grupa tematyczna, a następnie jako stowarzyszenie lekarzy wiejskich w Europie. Dzisiaj, stowarzyszenie aktywnie uczestniczy w spotkaniach i corocznych konferencjach WONCA Europe. EURIPA wykorzystuje media społeczne, aby angażować swoich członków i publikuje biuletyn informacyjny zatytułowany – „Grapevine”. Stowarzyszenie zachęca również wiejskich lekarzy rodzinnych do publikowania swoich artykułów w europejskim dziale czasopisma „Journal of Rural and Remote Health”.
