Various applications of Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) technology in the medical environment are characterised. The electromagnetic field (EMF) emitted by RFID handheld readers (RFID guns) is characterised and evaluated with respect to humans exposure metrics – the strength of the electric field affecting anyone present near various UHF (ultra-high frequency) RFID guns and the specific absorption rate (SAR) values in their body. UHF RFID systems are the most popular of such systems used in hospitals. The performed studies indicate that the EMF exposure level near the RFID gun antenna and SAR values (a measure of the thermal effects of EMF exposure) caused by exposure from the RFID reader may exceed the limits of the electric field and SAR issued by international guidelines or legislation. Potentially excessive exposure to EMF emitted by UHF RFID readers is not limited to the user of the device, but may also apply to patients or bystanders. Only UHF RFID guns with an EMF emission lower than 1 W may be considered as an insignificant source of human exposure. The use of readers with a radiated power exceeding 1 W requires the evaluation of the EMF level using measurements, and also the evaluation of SAR by numerical modelling in the case of their use in close proximity to humans. In all cases, insufficient electromagnetic immunity of electronic devices (including medical implants) should be considered near RFID guns at least up to half of the reading range away from the RFID reader. The electromagnetic hazards related to the use of RFID guns may be limited by relevant preventive measures, as shown in this paper, together with the principles of an in-situ evaluation of electromagnetic hazards near the UHF RFID guns.
Scharakteryzowano różne zastosowania technologii identyfikacji radiowej (RFID) w środowisku medycznym. Pole elektromagnetyczne emitowane przez ręczne czytniki RFID (RFID guns) zostało scharakteryzowane i ocenione w odniesieniu do miar narażenia ludzi – natężenia pola elektrycznego oddziałującego na osoby znajdujące się w pobliżu różnych czytników RFID UHF (ultrawysokiej częstotliwości) i współczynnika SAR w ich ciele. System UHF RFID jest najpopularniejszym z systemów RFID użytkowanych m.in. w szpitalach. Przeprowadzone badania wskazują, że poziom ekspozycji na pole elektromagnetyczne w pobliżu anteny ręcznego czytnika RFID i wartości SAR (miara skutków termicznych oddziaływania pola elektromagnetycznego) spowodowane tą ekspozycją mogą przekraczać limity, opublikowane w zleceniach międzynarodowych lub przepisach. Nadmierna ekspozycja na pole elektromagnetyczne emitowane przez czytniki RFID UHF może dotyczyć nie tylko użytkownika urządzenia, ale również pacjenta lub osoby postronnej. Tylko ręczne czytniki RFID UHF o emisji pola elektromagnetycznego poniżej 1 W można uznać za nieistotne źródło narażenia ludzi. Korzystanie z czytników o mocy przekraczającej 1 W wymaga oceny poziomu pola elektromagnetycznego za pomocą pomiarów, a również oceny SAR za pomocą modelowania numerycznego w przypadku ich użycia w bezpośredniej bliskości ludzi. We wszystkich przypadkach niewystarczającą odporność elektromagnetyczną urządzeń elektronicznych (w tym implantów medycznych) należy rozważyć w pobliżu czytników RFID co najmniej do odległości od czytnika RFID równej połowie jego zasięgu odczytu. Zagrożenia elektromagnetyczne związane z używaniem ręcznych czytników RFID mogą być ograniczone przez odpowiednie środki ochronne, jak pokazano w tym artykule, wraz z zasadami oceny zagrożeń elektromagnetycznych in-situ w pobliżu ręcznych czytników UHF RFID.

Sterylność substancji leczniczej jest niezwykle istot-na z punktu widzenia bezpieczeństwa farmakoterapii. Sterylizacja leków może powodować powstawanie wolnych rodników. Porównano właściwości wolnych rodników powstających pod wpływem promieniowania termicznego (180°C/30 minut) i promieniowania gamma (25kGy) w streptomycynie. Badania prze-prowadzono przy użyciu techniki elektronowego rezonansu paramagnetycznego EPR na pasmo X. Zarówno dla próbek sterylizowanych termicznie jak i radiacyjnie zarejestrowano szerokie linie EPR. Obydwie metody sterylizacji prowadzą do powstania wysokich koncentracji wolnych rodników (1016–1018 spin/g). Porównanie parametrów linii EPR dla sterylizacji termicznej i radiacyjnej wskazuje na podobne właściwości wolnych rodników w sterylizowanej próbce – niesparowane elektrony zlokalizowane na atomie tlenu. Więcej wolnych rodników, w przypadku zastosowanych parametrów sterylizacji, powstaje w próbkach sterylizowanych radiacyjnie.
Sterility of medical substances plays significant role from the point of view of pharmacotherapy safety. Drugs sterilization can cause free radicals forming. It was compared free radicals properties forming in streptomycin under the influence thermal radiation (180°C/30 minutes) and gamma radiation (25kGy). Presented studies were performed by use of X band electron paramagnetic spectrometer. Both for thermal sterilized samples as well as for radiosterilized broad EPR lines were recorded. Both methods of sterilization lead to forming of high concentrations of free radicals (1016–1018spin/g). Comparing of EPR lines parameters for thermal sterilization and radiosterilization point at similar free radicals properties in the studied samples – unpaired electrons located on oxygen atoms. More free radicals, in case of used sterilization parameters, create in radiosterilized samples.

In maize plant breeding aimed at producing a hybrid, it is necessary to characterize the parents and hybrids by their agronomic aspects and grain quality so that the processing industry may offer consumers a quality product and also improve its efficiency. This study evaluated the viscoelastic parameters of masa and the chemical and texture properties of tortillas obtained from parent lines (M-54, M55, and CML-242), two single crosses (M54xM55 and M55xM54), and one hybrid (H-70). The morpho- logy of the maize grains and tortillas was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. The firmness of masa obtained from CML-242 and H-70 maize was higher than that from the other maize genotypes. M-54 tortillas showed the lowest crude fiber content. Otherwise, tortillas obtained from the M55xM54 hard grain had the lowest fat content and extensibility, while H-70 tortillas showed an intermediate breaking point and extensibility. M-54 and M54xM55 tortillas were softer due to their more swollen starch granules. In contrast, rigid tortillas were obtained from CML-242 and H-70. Grain hardness causes different morphology in starch and tortilla of maize genotypes. However, grain hardness did not influence the characteristics of texture in tortillas.

Electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of two antibiotics, Cefaclor and Clarithromycin, have been performed in order to investigate concentration and dynamics of free radicals generated in these compounds due to thermal sterilization. For Cefaclor three combinations of temperature and heating time have been applied: 160°C, 170°C, 180°C for 120 min, 60 min, and 30 min, respectively, according to the pharmaceutical sterilization norm. Clarithromycin has been heated at 160°C for 120 min. The ESR lineshape has been investigated versus microwave power ranging from 2.2 mW to 70 mW. Electron spin-spin relaxation time has been estimated from the ESR lineshape analysis. Concentrations of radicals generated due to different sterilization procedures have been compared with the purpose to select the best sterilization scheme.

The Upper Cretaceous Capacete Formation, from the intracratonic Sanfranciscana Basin, central Brazil, consists of epiclastic sediments with a significant aeolian contribution. This unit has been traditionally interpreted as deposited by alluvial fans distally grading to braided rivers in an arid- to semiarid climate within the central part of southwestern Gondwana. Locally, some expositions with wide lateral extension show architectural elements indicative of deposition in meandering rivers, such as floodplain fines (FF) interbedded with crevasse splay (CR), lateral-accretion macroforms (LA), and channels (CH). Bioturbation within the meandering fluvial deposits is commonly associated with the floodplain element, mainly occurring in fine-grained sandstone and mudstone. The lateral-accretion elements and channel deposits are barren of trace fossils. Sandstone with climbing ripples (Sr) from the element CR show low bioturbation of meniscate trace fossils assigned to Taenidium, Beaconites, and Scoyenia ichnogenera. Simple vertical and horizontal burrows identified as Skolithos and Palaeophycus occur associated with Taenidium and Camborygma in sandstone facies (Sr, St and Sh), as well as rhizoliths, representing the Scoyenia ichnofacies. The predominance of trace fossils related to the FF and CR architectural elements attests to the colonization mostly by insects in episodic and vegetated flood plains of the meandering river system from the Capacete Formation. Thus, despite the primarily arid to semiarid conditions interpreted for the inner parts of the newly formed South American continent during the Upper Cretaceous, our new data support deposition under humid conditions in some intervals of the Capacete Formation from the Sanfranciscana Basin.

Recently, glyco-therapy is proposed to prevent the interaction of bacterial lectins with host ligands (glycoconjugates). This interaction represents the first step in infection. Neoglycans referred to as PSA-Lac (PSA-Glu (β1-4) Gal) were obtained by conjugation of porcine serum albumin (PSA) with lactose at 80 °C, 100 °C and 120 ºC. Characterization studies of the products showed that PSA could contain 1, 38 or 41 added lactoses, depending on the reaction temperature. These neoglycans were approximately 10 times more glycated than PSA-Lac obtained in previous work. Lactose conjugation occurred only at lysines and PSA-Lac contained terminal galactoses as confirmed by Ricinus communis lectin recognition. Furthermore, Escherichia coli K88+, K88ab, K88ac and K88ad adhesins showed affinity toward all PSA-Lac neoglycans, and the most effective was the PSA-Lac obtained after 100 ºC treatment. In vitro, this neoglycan partially inhibited the adhesion of E. coli K88+ to piglet mucin (its natural ligand). These results provide support for the hypothesis that glycated proteins can be used as an alternative for bioactive compounds for disease prevention.

The high penetration rate that mobile devices enjoy in to day’s society has facilitated the creation of new digital services, with those offered by operators and content providers standing out. However, even this has failed to encourage consumers to express positive opinions on telecommunication services, especially when compared with other sectors. One of the main reasons of the mistrust shown is the low level of quality of customer service provided an area that generates high costs for the operators themselves, due to the high number of people employed at call centers in order to handle the volume of calls received. To face these challenges, operators launched self-care applications in order to provide customers with a tool that would allow them to autonomously manage the services they have subscribed. In this paper, we present an architecture that provides customized information to customers – a solution that is separate from mobile operating systems and communication technologies.

Objectives Reliable and valid instruments are essential for understanding fatigue in occupational settings. This study analyzed the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Swedish Occupational Fatigue Inventory (SOFI). Material and Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 218 workers from an automotive industry involved in assembly tasks for fabrication of mechanical cables. Convergent and discriminant validity, internal consistency reliability and confirmatory factor analysis were performed. Results Results showed adequate fit to data, yielding a 20-item, 5-factor structure (all intercorrelated): Chi²/df (ratio Chi² and degrees of freedom) = 2.530, confirmatory fit index (CFI) = 0.919, goodness of fit index (GFI) = 0.845, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.084. The SOFI presented an adequate internal consistency, with the sub-scales and total scale presenting good reliability values (Cronbach’s α values from 0.742 to 0.903 and 0.943 respectively). Conclusions Findings suggest that the Portuguese version of the SOFI may be a useful tool to assess fatigue and prevent work-related injuries. In future research, other instruments should be used as an external criterion to correlate with the SOFI dimensions. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2017;30(3):407–417

Opis:
An implemented impedance measuring instrument is described in this paper. The device uses a dsPIC (Digital Signal Peripheral Interface Controller) as a processing unit, and a DDS (Direct Digital Synthesizer) to stimulate the measurement circuit composed by the reference impedance and the unknown impedance. The voltages across the impedances are amplified by programmable gain instrumentation amplifiers and then digitized by analog to digital converters. The impedance is measured by applying a seven-parameter sine-fitting algorithm to estimate the sine signal parameters. The dsPIC communicates through RS-232 or USB with a computer, where the measurement results can be analyzed. The device also has an LCD to display the measurement results.

In this work, the influence of both characteristics of the lens and misalignment of the incident beams on roughness measurement is presented. To investigate how the focal length and diameter affect the degree of correlation between the speckle patterns, a set of experiments with different lenses is performed. On the other hand, the roughness when the beams separated by an amount are non-coincident at the same point on the sample is measured. To conclude the study, the uncertainty of the method is calculated.

Objectives: To estimate the incidence of acute leukemia (AL) in El Bierzo (BZ) and to carry out a cross-association analysis in order to suggest some etiological clues. Materials and Methods: We registered all new AL cases diagnosed 2000–2005. Annual standardized incidence rate (SIR) was calculated by the direct method. A cross-association analysis was performed by non-parametric methods and we checked the potential interaction between putative etiological factors by calculating Chi-square-for-trend. Results: SIR was 5.1 cases per 100 000, surpassing the Spanish, European and world average figures and heterogeneous throughout the region. We detected a negative correlation between acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML) SIR in every municipality and both the air distance to the nearest thermoelectric power plant (TPP) (Rho = –0.409; p = 0.01) and to the point of maximum density of the high-power lines (HPL) network (Rho = –0.329; p = 0.04). Accordingly, SIR was higher in the municipalities situated < 7.5 km away from TPP (9.58 vs. 1.72; p = 0.004) or < 10 km away from HPL (3.90 vs. 3.19; p = 0.045). A positive relation between both factors was observed (Chi-square-for-trend = 9.209; p = 0.006). Conclusions: SIR of AL in BZ is higher than the Spanish average and that of most countries in the world. Residing near TPP or HPL confers a higher risk of AML, with synergistic effect between both factors.
