We report on progress towards finding a local expression for radiation reaction for a particle orbiting a Kerr black hole. The Dirac-Gal'tsov approach is described. For the case of a scalar particle in a circular orbit of a Schwarzschild black hole, an explicit calculation is done via this method and shown to be in agreement with overall energy conservation. A possible approach to the case of more general orbits is also discussed.

The aim of this article is to present the feminist thought of Prof. Rachel Elior (the Hebrew University, Jerusalem), who is a world-known scholar working, mainly, in the field of Jewish mysticism in its different forms and aspects. Nevertheless, Prof. Elior dedicated some of her works also to the problem of Jewish women who, for centuries, have been, generally, absent, in social, religious and cultural life of Jewish communities living in different parts of the world. As the analysis of Elior’s feminist literature shows, the aforementioned absence of the women has been mainly caused by the patriarchal order, created “by men and for men”, by means of some male narratives and male mythology, in which women seem to be – usually - perceived as some inferior creatures or they are simply demonized.

The paper delineates the history of Rachel Boymvol — a poetess, and an author of aphorisms, fables both for children and adults, and a compendium concerning Yiddish idiomatics. Her life — from the fascination with communism in the 1930s to facing persecutions in 1940s and 1950s, and emigration to Israel in 1971 — is one of the many fates of Russian writers of Jewish descent. Previously a noteworthy fabulist, published in millions of volumes, this later forgotten author is slowly regaining her place within Russian literature after 2000.

Opis:
One of the known biblical texts of the New Testament referring to the subject of children is the relation of the massacre of Bethlehem, included only in Matthew (Mt 2,16‒18). The text seems difficult for interpretation, as it is closely connected with the narration about the successful escape of the Holy Family to Egypt. Children die because of Jesus. The event is connected with the quotation from Jr 31,15 recalling Rachel’s symbolic cry over Israel. It turns out that in the context of Jr 30‒31 it is not sorrow and mourning that dominate, but the climate of hope and future joy. Questions arise: What meaning has the quotation from Jeremiah got in Mt 2,18? What is the relation of Rachel, the symbolic mother of Israel, to the children of Bethlehem? Is it possible to see any positive message of the text in spite of the tragic situation in Bethlehem? It seems to suggest the primeval literary – theological context of Jr 31,15 and in an obvious way – the nature of the kingdom Jesus realizes – the true ”Jewish King”.

Opis:
In both World Wars, combatant nations, including the United States, Britain, and Germany, learned that inadequate or poorly-maintained footwear produced costly and preventable casualties from trench foot and frostbite. While provision of shoes and boots to troops were major issues in earlier conflicts, no nation before World War I had fully appreciated the significance of warm, dry, well-fitting socks to the effectiveness of soldiers in the field. The large numbers of trench foot casualties in World War I, especially among the French and British, convinced policymakers that this vital commodity must receive a higher priority in military production planning, but few nations in wartime could shift production to knitting mills rapidly enough to make a difference. Thus, in Britain and the U.S, the best policy option proved to be recruiting women and children civilians to knit socks by hand for the military in the first war, and for refugees, prisoners and civilians in the second. This paper discusses the economic and military importance of this effort, including the numbers of pairs produced, and the program’s role in supplementing industrial production. The production of this low-technology but crucial item of military apparel is typical of detail-oriented tasks performed by women under conditions of full mobilization for war, in that they have a high impact on battlefield and home front performance and morale, but very low visibility as significant contributions to national defense. Often, both during and after the emergency, these efforts are ridiculed as trivial and/or wasteful. Unlike women pilots or industrial workers, handcrafters of essential supplies are regarded as performing extensions of their domestic roles as makers and caretakers of clothing and food. This was especially true in the U.S. in and after World War II, a wealthy industrialized nation that took pride in its modern - and thoroughly masculinist - military industrial complex.

Aim: This article considers the need to move away from a dependency on fossil fuels towards more sustainable renewable sources of energy production. The focus is on the tourism sector in two Indian Ocean destinations, Mauritius and the Seychelles. The broader aim, however, is to highlight the interconnectedness between public and private stakeholders and how lessons learned from these case studies could have broader applicability elsewhere.   Design/research methods: A case study approach has been taken drawing on data supplied by both the private tourism sector in the destinations under consideration and relevant government and regional reports.   Conclusions/findings: Progress has been made in the shift towards decarbonisation policies and practices in these destinations. This has been achieved via a cooperative approach between public and private stakeholders, extending the development of renewable energy infrastructure and supply to include sustainable education policies supported by both governments’ education departments and vocational programmes implemented by the larger hotels in these destinations.   Originality/value of the article: Although there have been other studies conducted on the promotion of renewable energy in small island states, there is a paucity of such research looking specifically at the tourism sector and the role of public/private partnerships in developing broader education for sustainable development programmes.   Implications: The case studies focus on highlighting how governments and tourism businesses can work towards shared goals, in this case decarbonisation and education for sustainability. The implication is that such a model could be applied elsewhere with equally positive results.

This article examines the wartime texts produced by two deeply believing Catholics – Jerzy Andrzejewski and Czesław Miłosz. In 1942, at the time of the deportations to Treblinka, these young but already prominent Warsaw men of letters and believing Catholics engaged in a correspondence which examined the ethical crisis of the Jewish genocide and its impact on Christian humanism. Miłosz and Andrzejewski followed their epistolary exchange with literary responses to the 1943 Ghetto Uprising. Whereas the letters conceptualized possibilities of moral restoration, the literary works – Miłosz’s two poems, Campo di Fiori and Biedny Chrześjanin patrzy na getto (A Poor Christian Looks at the Ghetto) and Andrzejewski’s novella Wielki Tydzień (Holy Week) – focused on the devastating impact of the Jewish genocide on their Polish Catholic world. These literary works see the event of the Holocaust as an irrevocable failure of the Catholic dogmas of caritas and love for the Other.

After Rachel E. Burke briefly introduces the essays presented with a focus on our contemporary relationship to modern subjectivity, Mieke Bal will make the case for the sense of presentness on an affective and sensuous level in Munch’s paintings and Flaubert’s writing by selecting a few topics and cases from the book Emma and Edvard Looking Sideways: Loneliness and the Cinematic, published by the Munch Museum in conjunction with the exhibition Emma & Edvard. It is this foregrounded presentness that not only produces the ongoing thematic relevance of these works, but more importantly, the sense-based conceptualism that declares art and life tightly bound together. If neither artist eliminated figuration in favour of abstraction, they had a good reason for that. Art is not a representation of life, but belongs to it, illuminates it and helps us cope with it by sharpening our senses. As an example, a few paintings will clarify what I mean by the noun-qualifier “cinematic” and how that aesthetic explains the production of loneliness.

The present article reviews the historical background that had generated the devastation of the Jewish community in the Ukraine in the second half of the 17th century and the rising of Sabbatianism in this period that was followed by the emergence of Hasidism in the second third of the 18th century. The literary evidence, dating from 1650 onward until the end of the 18th century, reveals that the Jewish writers were concerned with the documentation of the tragic devastation that followed the Chmielnizki revolt as well as expressing profound hopes for divine vengeance and a profound hope for messianic redemption. The discussion is focused on two spiritual responses to the tragic circumstances: Sabbatianism and Hasidism, describing the uniqueness of each one of the two major mystical-messianic-charismatic movements in the Jewish community of the modern era. The discussion includes an analysis of the inner social reality of the Jewish community, where leaders were often chosen among the members of the wealthiest families. The economical-intellectual alliance created a situation where an alternative charismatic leadership was chosen by many members of the Jewish community, who were disappointed with the rabbinic leadership and its social responsibility. The article presents also the 12 principles of the Hasidic thought and describes the unique circumstances that affected the activity of the Baal Shem Tov in relation to the thirty five blood libels that were recorded in his life time in the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth.

Positive psychology has been introduced to the applied linguistics literature with the broad goal of improving the experience of language learners and teachers through a variety of interventions (MacIntyre & Mercer, 2014; Gabryś-Barker & Gałajda, 2016). “The aim of positive psychology is to catalyze a change in psychology from preoccupation only with repairing the worst things in life to also building the best qualities in life” (Seligman &Csikszentmihalyi, 2000, p. 5). One significant contribution of this young field has been a series of empirically-tested positive psychology interventions (PPIs) that have been shown to increase positive emotion, reduce distress, and/or improve well-being (Seligman, Steen, Park, & Peterson, 2005; Sin & Lyubormirsky, 2009). In the present research, we examine one application of a PPI involving a focus on using character strengths as a way to address language anxiety. Through a case study analysis, we demonstrate the ways that this intervention was beneficial for the student.

While there is substantial research on literacy in the L1, factors impacting literacy in the L2 remain understudied. Preliminary research indicates that orthographic accuracy and typology influence literacy acquisition, indicating these aspects of linguistic representation need further exploration within the context of second-language acquisition (SLA). Additionally, SLA research on individual learner differences highlights emotional factors such as attitude and motivation, which are widely considered critical indicators of L2 success. Motivation is closely linked to perceptions towards the L2, which indicates learner perceptions of L2 literacy could impact success in learning to read and write. As such, this paper presents a cross-lingual, mixed-methods study that compares the orthographic transparency and typologies of 26 languages against learners’ (n = 217) perceptions of L2 literacy acquisition, such as perceived difficulty of the orthography and a self-assessment of literacy skills. Results indicated that orthographic transparency has a greater impact on learners’ perceptions compared to typology alone.

Modern dating life has been changed with the advent of smartphone-based applications like Tinder. One way to identify who uses these applications is to compare the personality traits of users to non-users. In two brief studies (N = 581) we compared Tinder-users to non-users in individual differences associated with short-term mating (i.e., psychopathy, Machiavellianism, narcissism [the Dark Triad traits], and anxious attachment) and mate value. We revealed that the men who were Tinder users were especially high in psychopathy and narcissism and women who were Tinder users were especially high in anxious attachment and rated themselves as unsuccessful in finding relationship partners. While exploratory in nature, we suggest that men who are characterized by antisocial traits may use Tinder for opportunistic mating goals whereas women who have struggled to find relationships may use Tinder as a compensatory mating tactic.

Rembek’s conviction of Polish “chosenness” is expressed in the characterizations of the Jewish protagonists in his fiction. While Rembek’s diaristic writing reveals his antiSemitic prejudices, in his novella Dojrzałe kłosy [Ripe spikes], and novel Nagan [Revolver] he portrays the Jews as patriotic officers fighting for Poland. These characterizations of the Jews highlighted Poland’s democratic open-mindedness toward its Jewish citizens. Nonetheless, as Jews they were excluded from the nation’s Christian destiny. Time and again, the Jewish officers in Rembek’s fiction articulate their despondency over their failure to accept Christ despite their irresistible attraction to the Christian faith. The failure points to their inability to achieve grace. Their sense of religious inadequacy elucidates a theological perspective which posits that a Jewish presence was indispensable to Poland’s redemptive destiny; the Jew as an affirming witness sanctioned the Polish claim to a messianic calling. To achieve legitimacy, the Polish national messianic mission needed to be acknowledged by Jews. The perspective in Rembek’s fiction illuminates an important facet in the complexity of the Polish-Jewish relationships in reborn Poland.

Background: Measurement of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is a useful technique for detection of eosinophilic airway inflammation and assessment of efficiency of corticosteroid treatment in patents with respiratory disease. Generally studies agree that measurement of FeNO is a useful non-invasive biomarker in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), however, there are reports that do not confirm such a relationship between FeNO and COPD. Aim of the study: The main objective of this study was to investigate FeNO levels in Polish patients with COPD compared to healthy controls. As a secondary objective, we assessed the influence of smoking on FeNO levels in healthy patients, and patients with COPD. Material and methods: FeNO concentration was measured using an electrochemical analyzer in healthy nonsmokers (n=21), healthy smokers (n=25), and former smokers with COPD (n=30) and smokers with COPD (n=38). General characteristics, hematological variables and serum biochemical parameters were also obtained and analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: FeNO measurement revealed significantly reduced NO levels in healthy smokers compared to healthy non-smokers, former smokers with COPD and smokers with COPD (median [range]: 14 [6–17] vs. 21 [15–29], 25 [15–53], and 19 [11–32] ppb, respectively, p<0.001). Moreover, we found increased FeNO levels in ex-smokers with COPD compared with smokers with COPD (p<0.05). No associations between FeNO and other analyzed parameters were found. Conclusions: Levels of FeNO, measured by with an electrochemical analyzer, were elevated among patients with COPD compared to healthy non-smoking controls. Moreover, our study confirms that smoking results in a reduction in FeNO concentration in both healthy patients and patients with COPD.

Opis:
Artykuł stanowi próbę odpowiedzi na wyzwanie, jakie stawia przed badaczką kwestia podjęcia w dyskursie akademickim analizy, pisanej po polsku, intymnej korespondencji z czasów okupacji i getta, autorstwa Racheli Auerbach (1899–1976), dwujęzycznej pisarki jidysz-polskiej, krytyczki literackiej, badaczki historii Zagłady, jednej z trojga ocalałych współpracowników podziemnego archiwum getta warszawskiego.
The article is an attempt to answer the challenges posed to the author’s own academic writing by the intimate correspondence in Polish written by Rachel Auerbach (1899–1974) during the period of the Nazi occupation and the Warsaw Ghetto. Auerbach, a bilingual Yiddish-Polish writer and survivor historian, was one of the three surviving members of the Warsaw Ghetto underground archive. By analyzing the history of Auerbach’s personal archive and the institutional framework within which her personal documents were made available to the public—in spite of the fact that many of them were labelled: “to be destroyed,” the author asks questions about the blurred boundaries between the public and the private and about the ethics of interpretation and publication. She tries to capture the tension present in the text between the desire to destroy and erase and the need to document and salvage traces of an individual existence that gains importance with the changing conditions of the occupation and of Auerbach’s situation as a Jewish woman. These changes are also connected to changes in the model of communication inscribed in the texts, which led a series of letters to transform into an autobiographical collection, a sort of diary, and finally into a part of a public archival collection.
