Opis:
In a classical measurement the Shannon information is a natural measure of our ignorance about properties of a system. There, observation removes that ignorance in revealing properties of the system which can be considered to preexist prior to and independent of observation. Because of the completely different root of a quantum measurement as compared to a classical measurement, conceptual difficulties arise when we try to define the information gain in a quantum measurement using the notion of Shannon information. In contrast to classical measurements, quantum measurements, with very few exceptions, cannot be claimed to reveal a property of the individual quantum system existing before the measurement is performed. A mathematical theory of computation that is based on quantum physics is bound to be different. They are the analogues for quantum computers to classical logic gates for conventional digital computers. Although quantum gates work on qubits in a much different fashion from standard electronic circuits, they only differ in their basic effects in one sense: reversibility.

QIT–Quantum Information Technologies promises are very serious, greatly exceeding only technical and market levels. Development of QIT in Europe, treated as building a new infrastructural civilization level, requires a broader view of coordination, funding and priority-setting policy. Simple measures used in the case of the development of new technologies, but not creating a significant ecosystem, are insufficient in this case. Quantum technologies are poised to create a new information layer of knowledge-based society. In this essay, the author subjectively addresses some of the issues such as: what we already know and what we don't know, and what efforts are being made in Europe. Polish version of this paper was published in Przegl.Telekom.2.23.

For an open quantum system we assume that we are able to set the system's environment temperature. We fix the time interval and let the system (further referred as the probing system) to evolve during this time in two different temperatures. We make a process tomography of the resulting dynamics (quantum channels ε₁,ε₂ related to the temperatures T₁ and T₂ respectively). We calculate then the values of α-fidelities for the pair of channels. We derive an inequality between the experimental data and the partition function of environment (hence the spectrum of the environment). If the inequality is not satisfied, it implies that our assumption about the spectrum of the environment is wrong. Notice that there is no dependence on the interaction terms neither on the Hamiltonian of the probing system. We show the power of this method in the following example. Consider a two-level atom passing the one-mode vacuum. We do not know the Hamiltonian of the atom (the probing system) neither the interaction mechanism. We would like to determine the frequency of the vacuum. We will show that wide range of frequencies are forbidden by the inequality.

We start from the assumption that the real valued observables of a quantum system form a Jordan algebra which is equipped with a compatible Lie product characterizing infinitesimal symmetries, and ask whether two such systems can be considered as independent subsystems of a larger system. We show that this is possible if and only if the associator of the Jordan product is a fixed multiple of the associator of the Lie product. In this case it is known that the two products can be combined to an associative product in the Jordan algebra or its complexification, depending on the sign of the multiple.

Opis:
Quantum mechanics introduces a new set of revolutionary principles, such as wave-particle duality, superposition, uncertainty, complementarity, entanglement, as well as a fundamentally new approach to probability. Quantum mechanics was created to explain some paradoxical discoveries that were impossible to understand using classical physics. Nowadays we have a similar problem in cognition and decision making – there are many paradoxical findings that seem irrational according to classical probability theory. For example, under some conditions, people judge the probability of event A and B to be greater that the probability of A, which is called the conjunction fallacy; or they judge the probability of A or B to be less than the probability of A, which is called the disjunction fallacy. The aim of this article is to describe the Quantum Cognition research program, which applies the abstract, mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics to cognition and decision making. Quantum probability theory, initially invented to explain some effects on measurements in physics, appears to be a powerful tool to explain some findings in the cognitive sciences.
Mechanika kwantowa wprowadziła nowy zestaw rewolucyjnych idei, takich jak dualizm korpuskularno-falowy, superpozycja stanów, nieoznaczoność, komplementarność, splątanie i całkowicie nowe podejście do prawdopodobieństwa. Mechanika kwantowa została stworzona w celu wyjaśnienia paradoksalnych odkryć, całkowicie niemożliwych do wyjaśnienia w ramach fizyki klasycznej. Współcześnie podobną sytuację możemy znaleźć w naukach o poznaniu i teoriach decyzji – wiele odkryć wydaje się paradoksalnych z punktu widzenia klasycznej teorii prawdopodobieństwa. Kwantowa teoria prawdopodobieństwa, pierwotnie stworzona w celu opisania pomiaru w mechanice kwantowej, wydaje się skutecznym narzędziem w modelowaniu czynności poznawczych i procesów decyzyjnych.

I address the question whether the wave function in quantum theory exists as a real (ontic) quantity or not. For this purpose, I discuss the essentials of the quantum formalism and emphasize the central role of the superposition principle. I then explain the measurement problem and discuss the process of decoherence. Finally, I address the special features that the quantization of gravity brings into the game. From all of this I conclude that the wave function really exists, that is, it is a real (ontic) feature of Nature.

We present the basic high-level structures used for developing quantum programming languages. The presented structures are commonly used in many existing quantum programming languages and we use quantum pseudo-code based on QCL quantum programming language to describe them. We also present the implementation of introduced structures in GNU Octave language for scientific computing. Procedures used in the implementation are available as a package quantum-octave providing library of functions, which facilitates the simulation of quantum computing. This package allows also to incorporate high-level programming concepts into the simulation in GNU Octave and Matlab. As such it connects features unique for higl-level quantum programming languages, with the full palette of efficient computational routines commonly available in modern scientific computing systems. To present the major features of the described package we provide the implementation of selected quantum algorithms. We also show how quantum errors can be taken into account during the simulation of quantum algorithms using quantum-octave package. This is possible thanks to the ability to operate on density matrices implemented in quantum-octave.

Opis:
Europe has to face strong competitive challenges in the field of QIT from other regions of the world. The tools for the effective implementation of the challenges related to the start, we hope, of building a quantum civilization are both common and individual in particular European countries. Joint projects in the field of QIT, usually narrowly focused, are announced by large European Agencies and are related to their activities. Large-scale collaborative projects are of course the domain of the EC. National projects depend heavily on the capabilities of individual countries and vary greatly in size. The most technologically advanced European countries invest hundreds of millions of Euros in national QIT projects annually. The largest European FET class project currently being implemented is the Quantum Flagship. Although the EQF is basically just one of the elements of a large and complicated European scene of development of quantum technologies, it becomes the most important element and, in a sense, a dominant one, also supported from the political level. There are complex connections and feedbacks between the elements of this quantum scene. National projects try to link to the EQF. Here we are interested in such connections and their impact on the effectiveness of QIT development in Europe, and especially in Poland.

We consider the problem of optimal estimation of a state of a quantum system interacting with the Bose field being in a mixture of the vacuum and coherent state. The system and electromagnetic field are described by making use of quantum stochastic unitary evolution. We derive stochastic master equation using Gardiner and Collet's input-output theory and the concept of cascade systems. To find the stochastic evolution of the system conditioned on the result of the quadrature measurement of the output field, we extend the compound system by an ancilla driven by the vacuum and generating the desired non-classical state of light.

This article reviews chosen topics related to the development of Information Quantum Technologies in the major areas of measurements, communications, and computing. These fields start to build their ecosystems which in the future will probably coalesce into a homogeneous quantum information layer consisting of such interconnected components as quantum internet, full size quantum computers with efficient error corrections and ultrasensitive quantum metrology nodes stationary and mobile. Today, however, the skepticism expressing many doubts about the realizability of this optimistic view fights with a cheap optimism pouring out of some popular press releases. Where is the truth? Financing of the IQT by key players in research, development and markets substantially strengthens the optimistic side. Keeping the bright side with some reservations, we concentrate on showing the FAST pace of IQT developments in such areas as biological sciences, quantum evolutionary computations, quantum internet and some of its components.

A general definition of a quantum predicate and quantum labelled transition systems for finite quantum computation systems is presented. The notion of a quantum predicate as a positive operator-valued measure is developed. The main results of this paper are a theorem about the existence of generalised predicates for quantum programs defined as completely positive maps and a theorem about the existence of a GSOS format for quantum labelled transition systems. The first theorem is a slight generalisation of D’Hondt and Panagaden’s theorem about the quantum weakest precondition in terms of discrete support positive operator-valued measures.
