Opis:
Following in the footsteps of vanished existences is one of the motifs of Patrick Modiano’s writings. Chevreuse is a variation on this theme, featuring a character who tries to recover his past threatened by oblivion. It is, however, singular that the modality of this memorial quest is introspective. This article will explore how the narrative navigates the tension between the apparent looseness of the plot, which becomes mimetic of the experience of remembering itself, and the attempt to create, by means of writing, a network allowing the memories to make sense of one another. From this perspective, we will study the two valences of the writing which embrace the convolutions of a lacunar memory on its becoming a hermeneutic instrument; then we will demonstrate that this ars memoriae endows itself with a poetics of dream and imagination to overcome this ambivalence and to proceed to the mental recreation of a disappeared world.

Opis:
As a fine observer of human psychology, Maupassant now goes even further. He plunges into the unconscious and the mystery of psyche. Maupassant’s inquiry is at work in the short story “Sauvée” narrating an episode of triggering involuntary sensory memory. The author leads us to an examination of the mechanics of forced sensual memory retrieval as a manoeuvre used in a manipulative seduction scheme. The amusing effect of the seemingly simple anecdotal storyline conceals the depth of meaning that surpasses the simplicity of the anecdote. This article discusses the way in which the provoked memory recollection scenes are depicted, by looking at how meaning is conveyed through a network of various psycho-sociocultural ‘factors’ at play: the sphere of senses involving sensory and sensual systems participation, impulsive behaviour, sociocultural context and the influence of relevant scientific theories known in 19th century France, while Maupassant’s writing style and technique give the text its complexity.

Children’s literature is sometimes considered to be the poor relation of literary genres throughout the world, as it is often confined to the rank of literature for the very young. Yet, on closer inspection, does this literature not play an important role in establishing national identity? In other words, does it contribute to the spread of tolerance and therefore to living together? Backed by Pierre Barbéris’ sociocriticism and structured in three parts, this contribution first illustrates the motivations behind the characters’ behavioural imposture; then examines the internal components that articulate the novel’s literality. Finally, the analysis shows that Jeanne Abou’ou’s Lettre à Tita 2, beyond the stigmatization of a poorly assumed modernism or the exaltation of traditional values, deeply encapsulates the writer’s desire to postulate an emerging world in which Cameroonians would readily identify themselves.

George Sand's originality stems from her desire not to be devastated by the afflictions and setbacks that cruelly crossed her life. Paradoxically, political disenchantment and sentimental disappointment made her a very optimistic and enthusiastic woman, in love with life and its harshest and most discreet joys. Sand never sought to deny the misfortunes that consumed her life, her heart and her mind. She accepted them while seeking to take advantage of them and sublimate them, always living in the hope of finding what rejoices her heart, revives her strength of love and renews her faith in the future. This quest for happiness, Sand carried it to the last breath: the secret of Sandian bliss lies both in writing and in nature.

Opis:
The Other World and Le Page disgracié (The Disgraced Page) occupy a singular place in the luxuriant seventeenth-century novel landscape on account of their first-person writing. In a process quite akin to the formative novel, the experiences of the “I” are stages in the construction of a meaning that is elaborated in the course of adventures rather than set as a goal to be reached. Meaning remains elusive, never predetermined, ravelled and unravelled as it is along with the episodes experienced by the narrator, regardless of whether those episodes are conveyed by the imagination of Cyrano or by the memory of Tristan’s experiences. No matter whether we are dealing with the most unbridled fantasies or autobiographical narrative, the route followed by the “I” is not oriented towards a goal that would make sense. Both texts call for alchemy, but the narrators do not make the quest for the philosopher’s stone the guiding thread of their narrative. Alchemy, described as a deception in Tristan and as an approach among others to the mysteries of the world in Cyrano, is presented as the touchstone of a possible decoding of the world, as the reign of illusion and, therefore, of the impossibility even to fix meaning. A pie-in-the-sky quest for meaning leading to a goal that does not exist (the two texts are abruptly interrupted), the formative novel finds a possible hermeneutic opening in the form of libertinism that forces one to play with meaning. Both works put sensual pleasure at the heart of the adventures lived by the characters and this rehabilitation of sensuality could offer itself as the key to a libertine strategy.

In his novel entitled L’Opium du ciel (2017), Jean‐Noël Orengo narrates the adventures of a special drone owning a conscience. This steel creature will suffer some modifications which will revise his former identity. The libidinous machine becomes a spiritual entity. Hereafter, he aims to find the meaning of Life. He understands that the catastrophe is imminent because of the depravation of all values. Nevertheless, there is still hope : the cycle of metamorphoses will erase all. The drone will be the prophet of this renascence. The old world and its violence related to sexual desire will be cleared in favor of a more harmonious Earth.

Opis:
Producenci sensacji prześcigali się w ukazywaniu obrazów przemocy, by schlebiać gustom klasy średniej, żądnej krwi, widoku ludzkich szczątków, wydłubanych oczu, krzyku, rzężenia i innych „efektów specjalnych”.
The Grand-Guignol theater is regarded as a common literary genre having nothing in common with the real art. Certainly repertoire of this “bloody scene” was a popular fraction of the boulevard theater. The procurers of a sensation competed in showing images of violence to flatter the tastes of the middle class eager for blood, human remains, gouged out eyes, scream, wheezing and other “special effects”. Nevertheless, authors associated with this movement also created a new aesthetic which was inspired by the achievements of such classics as Guy de Maupassant and Edgar Allan Poe. They were focused on the common goal: to scare the audience. However, they were rather oriented on the psychological dimension of the fear than on the bloody scenes of violence. New playwrights have found in their brilliant predecessors not only a theme of mystery and horror but also have transplanted their prosaic formal measures on the theatrical ground. The dramas were created concise in the form in which the pressure was meant to lead, according to the classical rules, through the point of culmination up to the final solution. In this article the Author presents the quests of writers who have laid down the foundations of the characteristic “theater of cruelty”.

Using the explicit‑implicit socio‑critical approach systematized by Pierre Barberis, I will endeavour to trace the heuristic itinerary of a pugnacious illegitimate child in quest of her fugitive father. I will focus on textual clues and hermeneutical levers in order to reveal damages resulted in the absence of the father in the conjugal apparatus. In the first part, I will intend to prove that any paternal irresponsibility affects the vital equilibrium which is necessary to development within family and society. The second part, in turn, puts an emphasis on how psychological damages due to failed family life may result in reifying of minorities through the violation of women and children’s rights. Finally, I will endeavour to show that through the inter‑subjective gender approach one may see the project of a new world which fosters social justice for all sexes.

The novel D’un pays sans amour (2011) by Gilles Rozier features two narrators who try to recapture the past and to reconstruct with letters the Yiddishland annihilated after World War II. This vanished state, with its cultural capital situated in Warsaw, is called Atlantis in the novel and presented as a paradise in the yiddish literature and language. The choice of this metaphor encourages the reflection on the ambivalence between reality and fiction, as well as on the oppositions between presence and absence or memory and oblivion. What is more, this metaphor refers to the categories of time and space. The aim of this article is to examine the function of the Atlantis metaphor on which the novel is based and to analyze the mechanisms of narrative as memorial (on the basis of Paul Ricœur’s concept) which allow the narrator to rebuild the annihilated world of the mythical island and to bring the non‑existent back into existence. Key words: Atlantis, mythical island, the yiddish literature and language, presence / absence, memory / oblivion, time and space

With the development of political communication over the Internet, a growing number of the French politicians are posting online their New Year’s Messages, which have been so far a genre of political discourse reserved for the President. These speeches have a similar pattern, which apart from wishes include an evaluation of the passing year and plans for the future. This is so, because the New Year’s Messages have primarily a persuasive function, and serve the purpose of strengthening the addressees’ group identity by reminding them of common values. However, while the President’s speech is strongly ritualized and emotionally balanced – as it is addressed to the whole nation – the online speeches are not subject to certain conventions, which allows the politicians to adjust the tone of their speech to the expectations of their supporters. Therefore a whole range of feelings is applied – from the fear of France falling, to national pride – depending on the political aims which are to be achieved. This article makes an attempt at answering the question in which way these emotions are constructed within the speeches, and which persuasive function they embody. The author adopts the perspective of argument analysis in discourse (Amossy, 2000; Plantin, 2011), which perceives emotions as a rhetoric means (pathos) whose aim is to influence the addressee.

In this paper, we study, in a comparative approach, the notion of dialogism and the manner of its insertion in the text of Sahar Khalifé, Ghada El-Samman, Annie Ernaux and Hélène Cixous. The analysis of stylistic Arab and French works reveals how dialogism enters the textual space, through language use, language that is constantly plagued otherness. Thereby manifests a spring of writing that brings the dialogue with others to build a "story", a scriptural language activity and operating in the manner of "grafting" of co-locating the text in a between.

At first glance, the protagonist of the play has none of the characteristics of a vagabond. However, subjected to a more thorough analysis, he proves to be endowed with many features typical of a wanderer, such as alienation, unrest, loneliness, social isolation and individualism. In the text he is described as a man who is « in the search for himself, » his exile is, first and foremost, a metaphysical search for his own « self » and for the meaning of life. He is also a character undergoing a metamorphosis – from a lecher he becomes a saint. The shift seems to come as a consequence of being an exile from his own country. This exile, however, in its literal dimension, becomes too heavy a burden for him, and, be rid of the burden, he chooses to die a martyr. This article presents the evolution of the personality and the shift in the social standing of the character, as well as the reasons for, and consequence of, his exile.

In Fuir, Linda Lê features two characters – a vagrant nicknamed “Le Japonais” and the narrator, exiled to an unnamed Asian country – that seem to be re-cognized for what they are : lonely beings in search of an alter ego. Their improbable than astonishing meeting marks the beginning of a wandering both geographical and mental; the reader follows through the streets, alleys, driveways, sidepaths, pedestrian streets of indeterminate city symbolizing the maze of life whose meaning is to be decoded. The figure of the vagabond reflects the obsessions and concerns of the writer on his anguish of living. It also crystallizes its founding and formative reading, including the Romanian philosopher Emil Cioran and the Swedish writer Stig Dagerman who greatly influenced in the writing and the construction of her novel. Fuir is both a question about the absurdity of life and a metaphor for the condition of the exiled writer.
