Opis:
Introduction/background: Project managers have a significant responsibility both for the content of the project and for the personnel they manage. However, not everyone can become a Project Manager, because in addition to the knowledge gained through numerous courses and trainings, this person should have appropriate competences that cannot be acquired solely through learning. Aim of the paper: The aim of the study was to examine the development paths of the project manager and make an attempt to determine the most effective way to acquire competences in the field of project management. Materials and methods: The research was carried out in the following steps: an analysis of the literature was performed in the field of project managers' competences, their scope, significance and possibilities of confirmation, e.g. through certification. Afterwards, a survey was conducted among a group of professional project managers. Results and conclusions: The result of the work is an indication of which education paths related to the project management process are useful and enable the preparation of people to become project managers.

Opis:
Purpose: In the literature relatively little attention is paid to the project manager’s background, i.e., to the importance of whether the project manager is a line manager, a line employee of the organisation in question who is no one’s supervisor or whether the project manager is involved solely in project management. The purpose of this paper is to answer the question of how the type of project manager is related to project success. Design/methodology/approach: The research hypothesis was formulated and the results of the empirical studies were presented. The empirical verification of the research hypothesis was accomplished through survey research in Europe and USA. Findings: Based on the empirical data obtained, it was concluded that in terms of all three project parameters (scope, time and cost), the project manager, who is also a line manager, was the most successful. The empirical research indicated a possible relationship between project manager type and project success. Research limitations/implications: In the analysis, it should be borne in mind that there are other several internal and external factors responsible for potential problems in meeting the project scope, schedule and budget. Practical implications: Project management by line managers can be a sound basis for the interaction of processes and projects, manifesting itself, for example, in the transfer of knowledge between processes and projects during the activity of solving problems, especially those lying at the interface of one type of activity and another. Originality/value: The results obtained should draw attention to the need to complement previous research characterising the ideal or effective project manager with a new variable, the type of project manager.

Opis:
Purpose: The main objective of the research presented in this paper was to identify the managerial competences of project team managers. In order to achieve this objective, the first part of the paper explains the meaning of the term "project management" in the literature on management and quality. The second part of the paper is devoted to an analysis of the conducted research, on the basis of which an attempt is made to answer the question: which managerial competences are key in the role of a project manager? Design/methodology/approach: The research presented in this paper is based on the analysis of the literature on project management and managerial competences. The studies in literature also included secondary sources, which were communications from research of similar scope. The combination of different research methods allowed to obtain a broader context of the studied phenomenon and ensured a higher quality of the conducted research. The diversity of methods was aimed at achieving a consistency of the empirical basis for the inference. A diagnostic survey was adopted as the leading method. The remaining methods applied in the paper were auxiliary (complementary). Findings: An inseparable element of human life is change, which also accompanies enterprises on a daily basis. The information about changes in the market and competitors, provided every day, is a natural manifestation of economic life. Consequently, everyone has to improve their operations in the area of products, technology and organisation in order to remain on the market. As a result, every person, as well as every economic activity take actions aimed at achieving the intended goals, facing new needs and challenges. The way to achieve the desired results is a process known as a project. The efficient functioning of a project team requires the use of appropriate management support methods and tools, systematic measurement, constant comparison with competitors, removal of barriers and the exploitation of development opportunities. Research limitations/implications: In the future, research will be continued on a larger research sample. Practical implications: The paper presents the results of research carried out at a nationwide telecommunications operator that employs several thousand people. This company is part of a large capital group and, due to the group's communication policy, has reserved anonymity. The findings are very interesting and encourage research on a larger scale. They are a valuable source of information for managers responsible for the formation of project teams, the selection of its members, their functioning and project implementation. On the other hand, for persons. responsible for recruiting employees, the results may be useful in terms of developing a project team manager's profile, in particular when identifying the key managerial competences. Originality/value Based on empirical research, the paper proposes an original set of systemic solutions for project management to improve organisational performance.

Purpose: An attempt to identify the competencies of the project manager desired by the employers and to determine whether changes have occurred over time. Design/methodology/approach: Job offers were automatically downloaded from website with job offers. An analysis of text mining of fragments of offers describing the competence was carried out. The analysis of text mining included initial text processing, creation of corpora of analyzed documents, creation of a document-term matrix, topic modeling algorithm and the use of classic methods derived from data mining. Findings: The most frequently used words/n-grams and the correlation of selected words/ n-grams with other words/n-grams were presented in the form of drawings. Based on the frequency of words/n-grams and the correlation value, efforts were made to identify the project manager competencies. The topic modeling algorithm was used to generate topics that can also be used to identify expected project manager competencies. Research limitations/implications: Only offers written in Polish, downloaded from one websites with job offers, which had the phrase “kierownik projektu” (“project manager”) in their job title, were analyzed. Data was collected from 09 to 11 April 2018 and from 09 to 11 April 2019. Practical implications: The method applied can be used by organizations preparing for the profession of a project manager, to modify and better adapt curricula to the needs of the labor market. Purpose: An attempt to identify the duties and responsibilities of the project manager by analysing job offers from a job website. An attempt to determine whether there were any changes between 2018 and 2019. Design/methodology/approach: Text mining was performed for fragments of job offers, describing the duties and responsibilities. The text mining analysis consisted of initial processing of the text, creation of a corpus of analysed documents, construction of a word frequency matrix and use of classical methods from the data mining are. Findings: The most common words in job offers are presented, as well as their correlation with other words. With the use of the Topic modeling algorithm, hidden topics describing the analysed job offers have been generated. These topics can also be used to identify the duties and responsibilities of a project manager. Research limitations/implications: Only the job offers meeting the following conditions were analysed: (1) they concerned the job of „project manager”; (2) the content was in Polish; (3) they were provided by www.pracuj.pl website; (4) they were collected from 09 to 11 April in 2018 and 2019. Practical implications: This method can be used by organizations training project managers, in order to modify and better adjust the curriculum to the needs of the labour market. Originality/value: Research has shown that text mining can be used to determine the responsibilities of a project manager by analysing job offers.

Opis:
The key factor to project success is the project manager’s competencies, as their knowledge, skills, and experience are largely responsible for the effective and efficient implementation of project activities. There is a wealth of research in the literature on the factors of project success and failure. Meanwhile, project management associations such as the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the International Project Management Association (IPMA) have developed competency frameworks for project managers that enable the assessment of their knowledge and skills. However, there is a lack of research on the impact of individual competencies on project success, especially in Polish companies. Therefore, this article presents the results of a survey that was conducted to address the research problem: What is the impact of project manager competencies on project success in Polish companies? The study was conducted in the form of an online survey. The results of the study indicate that behavioural competencies are the most important according to the respondents in the context of project success.
