Opis:
Seed orchards are expected to produce geneticaly improved seeds while maintaining a sufficiently large genetic diversity. Field trials comparing open-pollinated Scots pine progeny from seed orchards and commercial seed stands were established at five climaticaly different sites in Poland. The paper presents first height measurements obtained on trees at age 4. Seedlots differed significantly, but there was no strong evidence of better performance of clonal seed orchards progeny over the progeny of production seed stands. There was no distinct geographical trend in the origin of the best growing seedlots, but populations from the northern part of country tend to perform better than south-eastern ones. Progeny of the local production seed stands at their native environment were not the best, except in one case. A strong site effect reflecting a fertility gradient of the planting sites was found.

The paper presents the assessment of the adaptive traits (survival rate and height growth) of 5−year−old silver fir one year after planting on conservation plots of the Carpathian Gene Bank (KGB) located in the territory of Wisła, Andrychów, Sucha, Nowy Targ, Krościenko, Nawojowa, Rymanów oraz Bircza forest districts. The conducted studies showed a high (over 90%) survival rate of the tested fir provenances. The growth of the West Carpathian (Beskid Śląski, Beskid Żywiecki, and Beskid Mały) fir provenances was high on the majority of the KGB conservation plots, while the height growth of fir stands from the central part of the Carpathian Mountains (Beskid Wyspowy, Beskid Sądecki, and Beskid Niski) was on an average level. The East Carpathian (Pogórze, Słonne and Bieszczady Mountains) provenances were significantly diversified in terms of the height and did not form a homogenous group.

The programme of testing the progeny of permanent seed stands, parent trees, seed orchards and seedling seed orchards that has been run in Poland enables to determine the genetic value and silvicultural quality of the progeny of components of primary forest material. A better knowledge of population variability and adaptability to particular environmental conditions also allows for the updating and verification of principles regarding the use of the seed base in testing regions, as well as the determination of possibility for forest reproductive material to be transferred. The article presents the research on assessment of survival and growth among progeny from 26 permanent seed stands of silver fir that originates from Lublin, Radom and Łódź Regional Directorates of the State Forests, at four testing grounds located in the Kielce, Suchedniów, Tomaszów and Zwierzyniec forest districts. Each research plot was founded with 4 replicates, each with 3−year−old saplings. After 5 years of growth, mean rates of survival ranged from 70.4% at the Kielce site to92.7% in Tomaszów. The lowest survival rate (30.5%) was noted for local origin (Starachowice), while the highest (93.8%) characterised the local standard from Zwierzyniec. Mean height varied from 54.1 cm in the case of the Suchedniów to 80.0 cm in the case of Tomaszów, albeit with the shortest firs originating from the Starachowice local standard and the tallest from the Tomaszów local standard. Analysis of variance components revealed that the environmental conditions (described by study area) played major role in shaping the variability. This effect was responsible for around 75% of the variance in height and 60% of that relating to survival. In contrast, origin (genetic factor) was most likely responsible for 7% of the noted variance in height or 4% of that relating to survival.

Opis:
European beech is one of the most important broadleaved tree species in Poland and will play probably even more significant role in the future due to the predicted climate change. The main objectives of this study was to analyse and compare the growth parameters and morphological traits between 23 European beech provenances from south−eastern Poland (fig. 1). The research was conducted on the experimental plot established in Łosie Forest District in 2006. The experiment employed a randomized complete block design consisting of 92 plots (23 provenances×4 blocks). On each plot 100 trees representing given provenance were planted in 1.5×1.5 m spacing. In the spring and autumn 2015 we measured and determined the following parameters for the subsample of 36 trees on each plot: survival rate, tree height, diameter at breast height, diameter of the branch at the middle height of the crown length, stem straightness, crown shape, tendency to create forks, mean angle between stem and branches and spring phenology. We also included different eco−physiographical characteristics for each provenances (tab. 1). We performed basic statistics to describe mean values and standard errors (fig. 2, tab. 2) and finally we quantified the interaction between traits and eco−physiographical characteristics by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) (fig 3, tab. 3). The obtained results indicates that under growth conditions on experimental trial in Łosie Forest District, the provenances from lower elevated regions with lower precipitation and higher mean temperature (i.e. more arid conditions; Kielce and Narol provenances) were characterized by thicker dbh and branch dimeters in contrast to regions from southern Poland (Łosie, Bricza 1, Stary Sącz and Nawojowa). European beech provenances from regions with more humid conditions and lower mean annual temperature, as well as shorter vegetation season are characterized by higher survival rate. They are also higher than other provenances, but reveal the lower ratio dbh to branch diameter.

Opis:
This study was focused on the evaluation of beech adaptation on test plots in the Góra Śląska and Świebodzin Forest Districts. For this purpose, we examined offspring from seed stands of beech growing in the Regional Directorates of State Forests in Szczecin, Szczecinek, Piła, Zielona Góra and Poznań, which were brought to both test plots. The aim was to determine the adaptive response of the offspring from these stands after five years of growth with respect to the changed environmental conditions compared to the site of origin. Our analysis revealed a relatively low survival rate which was 60.8% and 72.2% in Góra Śląska and Świebodzin respectively. Interestingly, beeches grown on the plot in Góra Śląska were about 40% higher than those grown in Świebodzin (77.6 cm). The trees from both plots were significantly different from each other in terms of the analyzed features and a significant interaction was observed between test plot and site of origin. However, the variability in the adaptive response of the seedlings was large. Using a regression coefficient and the average height value, we determined the seedlings stability, which indicated high quality in offspring from the beech stand in the Łopuchówko Forest District (Buczyna forest range, sub-compartment 95n) and a high degree of adaptation to growth in adverse environmental conditions. Our results also indicate a low survival rate and reduced height of beech offspring from commercial seed stands (local standard).

Opis:
This research was carried out on two experimental plots located in the Rymanów and Nawojowa forest districts. In the second and fifth year after planting, at three and six years of age respectively, survival and height of 25 beech progenies of selected stands were measured. Furthermore, we show the effect of beech origin and growth environment (significant ‘provenance × block’ and ‘provenance × test plot’ interactions). Beeches from both experimental plots differed significantly in growth and survival and this difference increased with tree age. The highest provenance heritability was obtained for the tree height after two years of growth in Rymanów. In Nawojowa, the heritability of beech survival reached zero after five years of growth. An evaluation of the stability of beech provenances (genotypes) in terms of survival and height under the habitat conditions of our experimental plots was done using the Finlay and Wilkinson method. The beech provenances of 469–Nawojowa and 452–Lesko (regional standard) were included as a stable basis for reference. A high degree of stability and high average values for the characteristics investigated indicate high progeny quality within these stands.
