The aim of this article is to investigate the usefulness and applicability of CAT (Computer-Aided Translation) programmes in relation to the qualities (e.g. standardisation, predictability, terminology) of the translated text. In the study both scientific articles and translator’s forums are taken into account in order to establish advantages and limitations of commercial CATs. It appears that CAT programmes influence cognitively the translator’s work and even though they are supposed to facilitate his or her work, they may hinder or slow down the process of translation. These programmes are also applicable only in the case of certain types of texts, namely those which are standard and predictable and they fail in the case of texts which are linguistically or culturally-coloured. Furthermore, translators express numerous practical concerns regarding CATs (e.g. their price, instability). However, their use has become a very basic translation skill and it is no longer an advantage but an absolute necessity for anyone wishing to work as a translator.

The aim of this research project is to verify whether machine translation (MT) technology can be utilized in the process of professional translation. The genre to be tested in this study is a legal contract. It is a non-literary text, with a high rate of repeatable phrases, predictable lexis, culture-bound terms and syntactically complex sentences (Šarčević 2000, Berezowski 2008). The subject of this study is MT software available on the market that supports the English-Polish language pair: Google MT and Microsoft MT. During the experiment, the process of post-editing of MT raw output was recorded and then analysed in order to retrieve the following data:(i) number of errors in MT raw output,(ii) types of errors (syntactic, grammatical, lexical) and their frequency,(iii) degree of fidelity to the original text (frequency of meaning omissions and meaning distortions), (iv) time devoted to the editing process of the MT raw output.The research results should help translators make an informed decision whether they would like to invite MT into their work environment.
Niniejszy projekt badawczy ma na celu wykazanie czy jakość tłumaczenia maszynowego jest na tyle dobra, by mogło być ono wykorzystywane podczas pracy profesjonalnego tłumacza prawniczego. Podczas badania analizie poddane zostały umowy – teksty użytkowe charakteryzujące się wysoką powtarzalnością wyrażeń, zwrotów i terminów, złożoną składnią oraz nieprzystawalnością terminologiczną (Šarčević 2000, Berezowski 2008). Przyjęta metoda badawcza polegała na nagraniu procesu tłumaczenia przy zastosowaniu narzędzi Google MT oraz Microsoft MT. Badanie umożliwiło wydobycie informacji na temat użyteczności tłumaczenia maszynowego poprzez określenie: (i) rodzaju błędów występujących w tekście wygenerowanym przez tłumacza maszynowego,(ii) częstotliwości występowania błędów,(iii) zgodności merytorycznej z treścią oryginału (liczba pominięć oraz zniekształceń),(iv) czasu poświęconego na edycję tekstu wygenerowanego przez tłumacza maszynowego.Wyniki badania powinny pomóc tłumaczom w podjęciu świadomej decyzji czy chcieliby włączyć tłumaczenie maszynowe do swojego warsztatu pracy.

Here, we are also dealing with the changing work environment, with price pressure, impact of new technologies, changes in working conditions. In the future, we need not only new skills, but also a completely new approach to our profession. Are we prepared for this and how are we prepared for it? What do we need for this? How can professional associations help?

This article fi rst surveys the current, somewhat unproductive state of research into potential universals of translation. Then it considers in specific the “first translational response universal” (Malmkjær 2011), suggesting that it may be rooted in the cognitive mechanism of priming. Empirical evidence for this is next sought in the analysis of a set of 34 novice translations of the same short passage from Swedish into Polish, which are shown to exhibit the effects of priming to a considerable extent. Overall, the objective is to illustrate a possible way of investigating postulated translation universals: fi rst identifying a cluster of cognitive mechanisms to motivate the universal, then determining the linguistic structures that are concrete manifestations of such mechanisms in languages meeting in translation. The proposed research procedure thus proceeds from a cognitive process to a detailed language structure, allowing for the examination of phenomena observed in the “third code” on the supra-cultural level.

This paper looks into the issue of Swedish-Polish translationese as a manifestation of the Swedish centre impact on languages in the world via translation. The term “translationese” is used to describe a specific language created in translated texts, among other things in Swedish-to-Polish translation. Such a language may be postulated to influence contemporary Polish in some domains due to abundant translations of Swedish literature in Poland in recent years. What features can be then ascribed to the Swedish-Polish translationese, not only from a lexical but from a grammatical point of view as well? The paper addresses this question thorough an analysis of a Swedish literary text and its 33 Polish non-professional translations, which are assumed to maximize the tension between Swedish and Polish in translation underlying the development of translationese. However, the intention is not to characterize such a language as a whole, but to test some hypotheses in its delimitation. The propounded hypothesis is that the occurrence of a postulated feature in the majority of the collected translations may be seen as an indicator of this feature’s existence in the Swedish- Polish translationese as such. The following features are identified: frequent use of short sentences, possessive pronouns in an NP, underspecified expressions and repetitions of lexical items, as well as desolation of fixed phrases. The presented research may be an impute to a broader corpus-based contrastive study.

Despite the growing number of academic publications discussing the advantages of translation for language learning, school teachers of French rarely use such exercises in their work with students, complaining mainly about lack of time and suitable teaching materials. Academic centres which educate future linguists offer more opportunities to use translation in practical French language classes. This article presents the opinions of students of Romance studies on the subject of translation in language learning after a semester of work with Janina Radej’s publication entitled “Francuski w tłumaczeniach. Gramatyka 1-4” [French in translation. Grammar 1-4]. It was found that for students, translation is a new and attractive exercise that diversifies the language learning process. Despite the greater effort needed, students unanimously declared that they want to do this type of exercise. They recognised not only benefits in terms of linguistic improvement, but also the interdisciplinary value, since translation exercises in the language course also offer students preparation for classes in translation studies, and serve as a prelude for doing translations in the future.

The concept of translation norm has occupied a prominent place in Translation Studies as a terminological challenge for scholars and the reflection of their research fields. The emergence and internalisation of norms is a natural consequence of the socialisation process since norms can be also used as evaluation criteria for certain social (permissible and acceptable) behaviours. However, the operation of norms in translation is hard to be observed: the objects of direct observation are products of the translation process and results of norm-governed translator behaviour. A question might be asked whether norms hinder or rather facilitate the process – a potential answer suggests the dependence of norm application on the translator’s experience and knowledge accrued as factors central for successful performance. These factors are manifested in the performance of professional translators and interpreters, therefore the article focuses initially on the concept of professionalism in translation and interpreting. This is followed by a brief introduction of the notion of norms positioned in the context of translating and interpreting legal texts. The article closes with the presentation of the survey conducted among translation and interpreting trainees.
Pojęcie normy tłumaczeniowej stanowi istotny punkt na mapie przekładoznawstwa, będąc zarówno terminologicznym wyzwaniem dla badaczy, jak i odzwierciedleniem ich zainteresowań. Zjawisko internalizacji norm jest naturalną konsekwencją procesu socjalizacji, ponieważ normy mogą służyć również jako kryteria oceny pewnych społecznie dopuszczalnych. Trudno jednakże zauważyć działanie norm: to, co do nas dociera, to produkty procesu tłumaczeniowego i skutki zachowania tłumacza kierującego się normą. Można zatem zadać pytanie, czy norma jest przeszkodą czy ułatwieniem pracy dla tłumacza – stosowanie norm może być pochodną skumulowanej wiedzy i doświadczenia tłumacza, które to czynniki przejawiają się w pracy tłumaczy-profesjonalistów. Artykuł zatem wstępnie koncentruje się na pojęciu profesjonalizmu w przekładzie. Następnie krótko omawia pojęcie norm w kontekście tłumaczenia tekstów prawnych i prawniczych. W artykule zaprezentowane zostaną ponadto wyniki badania przeprowadzonego na adeptach sztuki przekładu.

People from war-torn countries and countries suffering economic hardships are on the move in search of a better life or of a refuge. The host countries are challenged: To ensure equal access to public services, civil and political participation of migrants and refugees means to tear down the language barrier. Only translating and interpreting can offer a realistic, time-sensitive solution to this challenge and give “speechless” communities a voice. It is the objective of the article to investigate the expectations we can have from technology in public service translation compared to the performance of professional communicators; The issue of what a machine can(not) do and to fathom, when a professional translator has to intervene, needs a bottom-up approach and will be discussed against the backdrop of public service translation as domain-specific intercultural communication.

This paper comments on selected problems related to the theory and practice of translation in various professional, and other semantically-restricted domains. The text introduces a selection of papers published in Research in Language, Vol. 18, No. 3, which together with a number of papers published in RiL earlier issues collectively present various research programmes which link translation and specialised discourses. The field of specialised languages is constantly growing, including new professional varieties and new approaches. Jednym z aspektów tak pojętej edukacji są cechy i umiejętności określane mianem przedsiębiorczości. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu promowanie skutecznej operacjonalizacji pojęcia przedsiębiorczości tak, by absolwenci studiów tłumaczeniowych (i innych związanych z komunikacją specjalistyczną) nie tylko potrafili znaleźć pracę, ale by – przede wszystkim – stawali się podmiotami swoich znaczących działań życiowych.
One of the leading topics in translator and interpreter education is how to match the educational vision of the educators with that of the market and that of the students. The debate has been going on for more than two decades now, and it seems it is likely to occupy the researchers and practitioners in the nearest future. One aspect of the educational aspirations to make students active and successful players on the Language Service Provision market is entrepreneurship. The aim of this paper is to promote effective operationalization of this concept to help graduates not only find a job, but first of all make them self-directed in significant life choices.

Trening przedsiębiorczości w edukacji przekładowcy i tłumacza Próba powiązania koncepcji dydaktyki translacji z potrzebami kształcenia odpowiadającymi wymaganiom rynku usług tłumaczeniowych oraz potrzebom rozwojowym samych studentów stanowi jeden z wiodących wątków toczącej się obecnie dyskusji w obszarze akademickiego kształcenia tłumaczy. Debata ta trwa już od ćwierćwiecza i wydaje się, że nadal będzie podejmowana przez teoretyków i praktyków dydaktyki translacji. Jednym z aspektów tak pojętej edukacji są cechy i umiejętności określane mianem przedsiębiorczości. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu promowanie skutecznej operacjonalizacji pojęcia przedsiębiorczości tak, by absolwenci studiów tłumaczeniowych (i innych związanych z komunikacją specjalistyczną) nie tylko potrafili znaleźć pracę, ale by – przede wszystkim – stawali się podmiotami swoich znaczących działań życiowych.
One of the leading topics in translator and interpreter education is how to match the educational vision of the educators with that of the market and that of the students. The debate has been going on for more than two decades now, and it seems it is likely to occupy the researchers and practitioners in the nearest future. One aspect of the educational aspirations to make students active and successful players on the Language Service Provision market is entrepreneurship. The aim of this paper is to promote effective operationalization of this concept to help graduates not only find a job, but first of all make them self-directed in significant life choices.
