This work proposes to show the experience of posture training accomplished in the Paraíba State Telecommunication Company, using the knowledge of the Back School. The sample was composed of 12 operators, employees of the company, representing 31% of this population. The model applied in TELPA (Paraíba Telecommunication Company, Brazil) was based on the models of Sherbrooke, Canada, and of the School of Posture of Paraíba Federal University. Fifty-eight point four percent of participants showed a reduction of column pain, 25% improved the quality of the rest and the received training was considered enough for the learning of correct postures at work in 75% of the cases. The whole population approved of the training, and 83.3% of the cases considered that this training influenced their lives very positively.

Background: Cervical spinal cord injury (CSCI) is followed by mixed respiratory dysfunction.Purpose: Evaluation of the ventilatory parameters of CSCI patients in postures typical for positional training. Material: 51 CSCI patients in a mean age of 34.4 (SD=14.6) years; complete motor deficite (CMD) 66.6%; injury of C5 level or above – 68.6%. Control group(CG): 10 healthy volunteers. Method: Spirometry and flow-volume examination in recumbent (R), sitting (S) and vetrical 60o tilt (V) positions. Main results: Expiratory reserve volume (ERV) undergoes significant positional changes in CG (R: 1.34 L, H: 0.25 L, V: 0.79 L; p=0.02), but not in CSCI patients. Transition from R to S in CMD persons results in a significant decrease in vital capacity (VC) (from 2.45 to 1.75 L; p=0.0008); inspiratory capacity (IC) (from 2.48 to 1.41 L; p=0.0008); forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) (from 2.21 to 1.64 L; p=0.002); forced vital capacity (FVC) (from 2.55 to 1.78 L; p=0.0004). The FEV1/FVC rate does not depend on positional changes ranging from 89.7% to 93.9% of the reference values. Ventilatory parameters in the incomplete motor deficite (ICMD) group do not differ significantly between the examined body positions. Transition between R and S in the CMD group results in a significant decrease in the peak expiratory flow (PEF) (from 4.23 to 3.53 L/s) and the peak inspiratory flow (PIF) (from 3.89 to 3.43 L/s), while in ICMD the PEF increases from 4.01 to 4.39 L/s and the PIF increases from 3.66 to 4.18 L/s.Conclusions: Transition from R to S in CSCI patients results in increased restriction. CMD patients express a reduction of peak flows while in the ICMD peak flows increase after transition between R and S. Shifting from S to a 60o vertical tilt with standard trunk stabilization does not change significantly the ventilatory parameters in CSCI patients.

The study aimed to establish the short- and long-term effects of vibration on postural stability in young men. A single set of exercises and a 4-week vibration training were assessed for their impact on the center of foot pressure (COP) sway. The sample consisted of 49 male subjects randomly allocated to seven comparative groups, six of which exercised on a vibration platform whose parameters were set individually for the groups. Group VII was the control group. The stabilographic signal was recorded before the test commenced, after a single application of vibration, before the last set of exercises of the 4-week vibration training, immediately afterwards, as well as one week and one month after the training ended. The subjects were exposed to vibration 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Both a single application of vibration and the 4-week vibration training had an effect on all parameter values, but most changes were statistically insignificant. Group III was the only one where the COP sway in the anterior-posterior direction significantly increased after a single exposure to vibration and significantly decreased in both anterior-posterior and medio-lateral planes one week after vibration training compared with the pre-test recordings.

Introduction. A sedentary lifestyle with lack of physical activity contributes to deteriorated balance among healthy young people. Physical activity is import_ant since it stimulates neuromuscular junctions that control body posture, especially at younger age, when greater postural sway may be observed in stabilography compared to adults. Proper work of individual muscle groups is import_ant to maintain proper balance. Abnormal muscle tone can lead to dysbalances that make it difficult o maintain a stable posture in a variety of conditions. Aim. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of a training cycle consisting of stretching of the ilopsoas, rectus femoris, gluteus maximus, hamstring and rectus abdominis, and eccentric training of the above mentioned muscles to improve static and dynamic balance. Methods. Oobjective and qualitative-subjective were used to assess the results in a man aged 22 yrs. Postural control was tested twice in the patient with the Neurocom International Inc. SMART EquiTest device under static conditions without visual control and with dynamic visual surrounding and unstable support surface. Automatic postural reflexes were also evaluated. In addition, clinical tests were performed. Results. Myo-fascial training, which included eccentric training combined with lower limb and trunk stretching improved the postural control in the subject.

Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is a common sequence of ankle sprain. Conservative treatment of CAI is currently accepted as a primary mean of managing the condition and preventing of recurrence. Objectives: The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the effect of Weight-bearing Exercise for Better Balance (WEBB) program and unilateral balance training exercises on postural control in females with CAI. Methods: Thirty-five females with CAI participated in this study. The participants’ mean values of age, body mass, height, and body mass index were 21.76 ± 1.96 y, 64.82 ± 9.37 kg, 161.85 ± 7.24 cm, and 24.76 ± 3.76 kg/m², respectively. They were randomly assigned into three groups: experimental group A (n = 13) who received WEBB program, experimental group B (n = 12) who received unilateral balance training, and control group C (n = 10) using statistical random tables. Balance parameters were measured for all participants via Biodex Balance System (BBS) before and after four weeks of balance training. They included overall stability index (OASI), antero-posterior stability index (APSI), and medio-lateral stability index (MLSI). Results: There was a significant improvement in the post testing mean values of OASI and APSI, compared with the pre testing values in both experimental groups (A and B). There was no significant difference between the pre and post testing mean values of MLSI in the experimental group (A). Conclusions: Both WEBB program and unilateral balance training have positive effects on postural control in females with CAI.

It is difficult to overestimate the role of balance in the life of human beings. Postural stability plays a fundamental role in life and its deficiencies can lead to considerable difficulties in performing everyday activities. Activity is understood as a form of recreation that can promote the development of behaviour in which balance is improved so as to make everyday life easier. The main objective of the study reported in this paper is to discuss the differences occurring during the system of balance that is maintained by subjects as a result of practicing downhill skiing and snowboarding. The study involved students of Physical Education (42 subjects, aged: 21.15±1.47) who were subjected to an experimental study concerned with the analysis of postural balance prior to and following a winter sports training program. Throughout the study, a Kistler Force Plate was applied during experiments with subjects performing tasks with eyes open and closed and the participants either wearing ski boots or performing project trials barefoot. Subsequently, the subjects completed the Wingate anaerobic test and the entire course of the test was repeated. The following stage of the experiment involved the same test program that was repeated after completion of a 5-day ski training program by the students, whose initial phases involved the test developed by Haczkiewicz (3). The analysis of the study's results demonstrates a degree of adaptation in the subjects with regard to postural balance that included a decrease in the regression of the results after completing the Wingate test for trials performed following the training program. This result offers a foundation for the recommendation of downhill skiing practice and snowboarding as ways of assisting postural balance control during preparation for exercise in conditions when maximum and supra-maximum effort is exerted.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether a single bout of core stability exercises improves body balance immediately after the bout of exercise and during a retention test. Methods: The study involved 16 women (age 22–25 years, body weight 60.5 ± 5.2 kg, height 166 ± 5.4 cm). Postural stability was assessed in the mediolateral (ML) and anteroposterior (AP) planes separately on a force plate (Kistler 9286 AA) during quiet standing on a soft support surface with the eyes closed. Subjects were measured 4 times: just before (T0), 1 minutes after (T1 m), 30 minutes after (T30 m), and 24 hours after the workout (T24 h). Postural balance was evaluated by five parameters based on the center of pressure (COP) signal: variability (VAR), mean velocity (VEL), sample entropy (ENT), frequency (FRE), and fractal dimension (FRA). Results: We observed a decrease in VAR and VEL in the ML plane at T30 m and T24 h, compared to T0. The COP entropy significantly increased in the ML plane at T24 h, compared to T0. Conclusions: A single bout of core stability exercises improved the control of the mediolateral body balance. This effect was evident within 30 minutes after exercise, and remained for at least 24 hours. In addition, 24 hours after exercise we observed an increased automaticity in the strategy to maintain a stable upright stance.
