    In recent years, the number of patients with a cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) has been steadily increasing. Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are currently one of the primary methods of preventing sudden cardiac death (SCD) in patients at risk. A post-mortem CIED examination, which these days is performed very rarely, as well as the analysis of the recordings may provide key information regarding the circumstances of the patient’s death. This applies to both the potential impact of a defect or damage to the device in an event of the owner’s death and the forensic analysis of the circumstances of death, especially when traditional post-mortem diagnostics do not provide a clear diagnosis. In addition, using the data stored on the device, it is possible to identify the corpse and precisely determine the time of death, which is crucial for the conducted expertise. Since it is a quick, cheap and widely available procedure, CIED analysis should be incorporated as a routine element of post-mortem diagnostics.

    Nowadays, embalming has become more popular as it is often performed due to sanitary, hygienic, or psychological reasons. In special circumstances, like transporting a corpse from abroad, embalming is an administrative requirement. Embalming is performed using chemical substances that inhibit enzymes, bacteriological activity, and therefore cease decomposition processes. The study shows the toxicological analyses of sampled materials collected during post mortem examinations performed on six corpses subjected to the embalming process. It also presents the concentration of used preservatives in the tissues and body fluids. Analysis performed using gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID) revealed that in five cases, the deceased were intoxicated with ethanol during the time of death, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) excluded the presence of psychoactive substances in all six cases. The results showed that in cases of toxicological analyses of embalmed corpses, it is crucial to secure isolated body fluids, such as cerebrospinal fluid, vitreous humor, and a wide range of reference material.
    Balsamacja zwłok staje się coraz bardziej popularna ze względów sanitarnych, higienicznych lub psychologicznych. W szczególnych okolicznościach, jak transport zwłok z zagranicy, balsamowanie jest wymogiem administracyjnym. Balsamacja odbywa się za pomocą substancji chemicznych, które hamują aktywność enzymatyczną i bakteriologiczną, wstrzymując tym samym procesy rozkładu. Prezentowana praca przedstawia analizy toksykologiczne materiałów po-branych podczas sekcji sześciu zwłok poddanych procesom balsamowania oraz wyniki pomiarów stężenia użytych konserwantów w tkankach i płynach ustrojowych badanych zwłok. Analiza przeprowadzona za pomocą chromatografii gazowej z detektorem płomieniowo-jonizacyjnym (gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector – GC-FID) udowodniła obecność etanolu w pięciu przypadkach. Chromatografia cieczowa połączona ze spektrometrią mas (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry – LC-MS) wykluczyła obecność substancji psychoaktywnych we wszystkich sze-ściu przypadkach. Wyniki wykazały, że w przypadku analiz toksykologicznych zabalsamowanych zwłok kluczowe znaczenie ma zabezpieczenie izolowanych płynów ustrojowych, takich jak płyn mózgowo-rdzeniowy, płyn gałki ocznej, oraz wielu materiałów referencyjnych.

    Opis:
    The aim of the paper is to present the methods of creating multi-dimensional reconstructions used in modern forensic medicine and state-of-the-art autopsy technique. Making use of the computer tomography technology and sophisticated software by the forensic pathologists allows a new standard of quality to be introduced into the forensic medical examination and hitherto unprecedented effects to be obtained. These developments significantly enhance the information available to the expert, particularly in case where an incident involved the use of firearms, the presence of foreign object in the body of the deceased, or advanced decay of the corps. Furthermore, the paper touches upon a subject of attempting a spatial photographic reconstruction of the scene of incident using the techniques applied in spherical photography and commercial-off-the-shelf compute software. Irrespectively of the advancements in the forensic techniques, it is worth taking a look at the proposed changes of the forensic paradigm relative to data analysis. The novel methods expand the scope of the detection process which, in turn, can contribute to increase of crime fighting efficiency.

    Case records and post-mortem protocolls were analysed in 53 cases of persons who died because of various reasons and were found in post-mortem examinations to harbour in their muscles T. spiralis larvae, although the majority of the available records contained no mention on this subject. Analysing the main reason of death we found an unexpectedly high number of malignant tumors (14 out of 53) and still higher of circulatory disorders (22 out of 53). The problem of tumors is raised and discussed shortly in the light of literature data, more attention being paid to the question of circulatory diseases. It appers that previous Trichinella infection (even years ago) may contribute to permanent myocardial lesions, heart infarcts, aterosclerosis ect. Particular attention is deserved by case No. 1 concerning a patient who at the age of 46 years developed a chronic endocarditis with heart defect and chronic myocarditis, leading to death in the 59th year of life. As indicated by post-mortem anamnesis from the family members the heart ailments began after the regression of a disease, which was highly suggestive of trichinellosis, though at that time it was diagnosed as influenza. The same symptoms were exhibited simultaneously by her 2 daughters who after years showed a positive allergic test with T. spiralis antigen and signs characteristic of mitral defect. Assuming a genetically determined "topography" of predisposition for inflammator changes, in our case in the endocardium, we have advanced a hypo thesis that chronic trichinellosis may also contribute to the occurrence of acquired heart defects.

    Zebrano i przeanalizowano historie choroby oraz protokoły sekcyjne 53 osób zmarłych z różnych przyczyn, u których w badaniach pośmiertnych wykryto w mięśniach Trichinella spiralis, mimo że w znacznej większości materiałów nie było żadnej na ten temat wzmianki. Analizując przyczynę zgonu, zwróciła naszą uwagę sprawa stosunkowo częstych (14 na 53) nowotworów złośliwych i jeszcze częstszych (22 na 53) schorzeń narządu krążenia. Podczas gdy zagadnienie nowotworów zostało tylko zasygnalizowane i krótko omówione w świetle piśmiennictwa, więcej uwagi poświęciliśmy sprawie chorób serca. Na tle przytoczonych rozważań wydaje się bardzo prawdopodobne, że przebyte nawet przed laty z arażenie włośniami może wywołać lub przyczyniać się do trwałych uszkodzeń mięśnia sercowego, zawałów serca, miażdżycy naczyń itp. Na szczególną uwagę zasługuje przypadek nr 1, tj. chorej, u której w 46 roku życia zaczęło się rozwijać przewlekle zapalenie wsierdzia pod postacią wady serca i przewlekle zapalenie mięśnia sercowego, które doprowadziły do śmierci w 59 roku życia. Jak wynikało z przeprowadzonych pośmiertnie wywiadów z członkami rodziny, dolegliwości ze strony serca datowały się od czasu przebycia ostrej choroby, bardzo przypominającej włośnicę, jakkolwiek była ona wtedy rozpoznana jako grypa. Równocześnie wśród podobnych objawów chorowały 2 córki zmarłej, u których stwierdziliśmy po latach dodatni odczyn alergiczny z antygenem Trichinella i charakterystyczne zmiany dla wady mitralnej serca. Przypominając tezę genetycznie uwarunkowanej „topografii" predyspozycji do powstania zmian zapalnych w konkretnym wypadku we wsierdziu, postawiliśmy w oparciu o te przypadki i 3 dalsze hipotezę, że włośnica przewlekła może się również przyczynić do powstawania wad nabytych serca.
