Opis:
Silver nanoparticles with continuous size distribution from 10 to 20 nm were incorporated into porous glass produced using sol-gel technique. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was used to compare obtained material with an undoped reference glass. The positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy measurement were made in a broad temperature range (from - 180C to 200°C). The experimental lifetime values were compared with the predictions of the extended Tao-Eldrup model of the temperature range. Experimental results for the reference material were in agreement with the model, except for a small discrepancy at low temperatures. In doped material substantial changes and non-monotonous temperature dependences of intensity and lifetime values were observed. Heating the material to 200C resulted in reorganization of the material structure.

Opis:
MCM-41 silica materials modified by iron incorporation in the stage of its synthesis were investigated. The aim of the studies was determination of the nature of iron species and the influence of its content on the structural changes of materials and following the changes of their properties. For this purpose, the N2 sorption/desorption method and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) were used. Disappearance of the longest-lived ortho-positronium (o-Ps) component (tau5) present in the PALS spectra of the initial MCM-41 material in the spectra of Fe-modified MCM-41 measured in vacuum is a result of a strong chemical o-Ps quenching and/or the Ps inhibition mechanism. Filling of pores by air or N2 at ambient pressure causes reappearance of the (tau5) component with lifetime shortened in comparison to that observed in vacuum for pure MCM-41 to the extent which can be explained by usual paramagnetic quenching in air. In contrary to the tendency observed for (tau5) lifetime which is practically independent of Fe content, the relevant intensity I5 monotonically decreases. This fact suggests that only inhibition of Ps formation occurs for the samples in air. Observed anti-quenching effect of air seems to be a result of competition of two processes : neutralization of surface active centres acting as inhibitors and considerably weaker paramagnetic quenching by O2 molecules.

Opis:
Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy as a technique of porous materials investigation is still under development. Both measurement conditions and lifetime spectra analysis methods have to be adapted to the requirements of positron porosimetry. If complex positron annihilation lifetime spectra of porous materials are processed, numerical methods of lifetime spectra analysis have to be used with a particular care. Among various methods of positron annihilation lifetime spectra analysis available, the most popular ones were tested implemented in programs MELT and LT. It was found, from the simulated spectra study, that a large number of counts in a spectrum is needed to obtain reliable results of analysis. Even then only an approximate solution is available. Determination of the approximation nature helps in a further interpretation of the results and in positron annihilation lifetime spectrometer setting adequate to the problem. For this purpose, a few complex spectra obtained from positron beam facility were tested. The results show a negligible influence of resolution function on long lifetime components, while the precise estimation of the background level is crucial. Also some distortions caused by imperfection of numerical analysis methods are pointed out.

Opis:
The positron lifetime spectra in iron defected with a beam of Bi+51 and Kr+27 ions of energies 670 MeV and 240 MeV, respectively, were investigated. These spectra were analysed by an appropriate separation in 1, 2 or 3 components. It has been found that the experimental data best fit to the assumed model if only two components are taken into account. For comparison, we investigated both irradiated and non-irradiated surfaces of the sample. We have taken into account the fact that the range of penetration of iron by Bi and Kr ions is small. The dependence of the positron lifetime spectra on the absorbed dose and kind of the bombarding ions is presented.

High efficiency of BaF$\text{}_{2}$ scintillators creates the risk of distortion of the positron lifetime distributions due to summing and backscattering. In the 180° geometry it leads to the appearance of a spurious shortlived component.

Opis:
Positron lifetime spectra in poly[1-(trimethylsilyl)]propine membranes were collected at different temperatures and various number of accumulated counts, in order to compare the results from analyses obtained by different decay models: discrete (that is, purely exponential) or continuous (with at least one distribution of lifetimes). Analysis into four discrete components is inadequate, unless a low number of counts (1 to 2 millions) is accumulated. Conversely, deconvolutions which allow the ortho-positronium lifetime to be distributed give satisfactory fits, even at the highest statistics (60 millions). An equivalent good fit in terms of χ$\text{}^{2}$ test is obtained with a five discrete components analysis, from which it is possible to extract information on the first moments (centroid and standard deviation) of ortho -positronium lifetime distribution.

Opis:
The same reference positron lifetime spectra of polyurethane, measured in temperature range 112 to 390 K, were analyzed with three theoretical models: the "conventional" model with three exponential decay component of discrete values of lifetimes, a model with one discrete exponential component and two "packages" of exponentials with log-normal distribution of annihilation rates, and a model considering positronium slow localization, positronium internal relaxation as well as "delayed" formation of positronium. It turns out that the two latter models fit to the experimental data with the same excellent quality, in spite of the fact that in both models the ratio of intensities related to para-positronium and ortho-positronium was constrained to be as 1:3.
