Opis:
Decomposition of the supersaturated solid solution of 2 at.% Cu in Al was investigated by means of electrical resistivity and high-resolution positron lifetime measurements. The phase composition of this alloy was determined by transmission electron microscopy. Electrical resistivity measurements were performed by a classical four-point method. Positron lifetime spectra were measured by means of a spectrometer consisting of two BaF$\text{}_{2}$ detectors and a standard fast-slow coincidence system. The specimens were first exposed to the solution heat treatment at 783 K for 19 hours with a subsequent quenching. Then the specimens were isochronally annealed in the temperature range 293 ÷ 573 K. Annealing responses of electrical resistivity and positron annihilation were studied. Resistivity measurements as well as transmission electron microscopy observations confirmed the well-known decomposition sequence of the Al-Cu alloy. The decomposition of the alloy was manifested by the decrease in the intensity of positron lifetime component τ$\text{}_{2}$ = (207 ±2 ) ps correlated with simultaneous appearance and increase in the intensity of τ$\text{}_{3}$ = (180 ± 5) ps component. Component τ$\text{}_{2}$ originates from positron annihilation in vacancies trapped at the Guinier-Preston zones while τ$\text{}_{3}$ comes from annihilation of the positrons localized in the misfit dislocations at coherent precipitates of the Al$\text{}_{2}$Cu phase. The shortest observed component τ$\text{}_{1}$ apparently belongs to annihilation of untrapped positrons.

We applied positron annihilation spectroscopy to study the effect of growth polarity on the vacancy defects in ZnO grown by metal-organic vapor phase deposition on sapphire. Both c-plane and a-plane ZnO layers were measured, and Zn vacancies were identified as the dominant defects detected by positrons. The results are qualitatively similar to those of earlier experiments in GaN. The Zn vacancy concentration decreases in c-plane ZnO by almost one order of magnitude (from high $10^{17} cm^{-3}$ to low $10^{17} cm^{-3}$) when the layer thickness is increased from 0.5 to 2 μm. Interestingly, in a-plane ZnO the Zn vacancy concentration is constant at a level of about $2×10^{17} cm^{-3}$ in all the samples with thicknesses varying from 0.6 to 2.4 μm. The anisotropy of the Doppler broadening of the annihilation radiation parallel and perpendicular to the hexagonal c-axis was also measured.

Opis:
Slow positron annihilation spectroscopy, contact angle and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were employed to investigate the surface polarity and morphologies as functions of aging time in acrylic coatings during UV-a irradiation. The S parameter plots of each exposed sample are lower than that of the virgin sample in the whole range of E. The S parameter plots become lower as the exposing longer time, indicated that the irradiation generated more polar groups and increased the oxidation layer depth. Combined with surface morphology and the surface energy of acrylic coating, the variation of contact angle, and surface energy, polar component and dispersive component is related with surface polarity and morphologies.

The standard form of the positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy results presentation are two plots of o-Ps lifetime and intensity as a function of external factor, e.g. temperature, pressure. Both o-Ps parameters change (stepwise) when in the medium phase transitions occur. For a more complete picture of the structural changes occurring in the matter we suggest to use an additional plot, in the coordinates, (τ₃, I₃). The hydrocarbons are selected to show the advantages following from the presentation of the results in the intensity-lifetime (INTI) plot.

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was applied to investigate the microcapsules composed of n-eicosane (filling material) and polysiloxane polymer (shell) in the range of temperatures 123-333 K. Pure components of microcapsules were also investigated as a base for interpretation of the measurement results. The temperature of phase transitions in microcapsules was determined. It showed the appearance of a rotary phase, which is not present in pure n-eicosane. In the considered material, two types of free volume have been identified. The sizes of free volumes able to accommodate Ps were estimated using standard models. On the basis of the o-Ps intensities, the content of polysiloxane in microcapsules was estimated as about 40%. Internal structure of the microcapsules (morphology) was observed by scanning electron microscopy.

Positron lifetime spectra were measured for a series of odd-numbered liquid n-alkanes (C7H16, C9H20, C13H28 and C19H40) in a broad range of temperature. According to the “bubble model” the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) lifetime is determined by surface tension. Bubble radius was calculated using the Tao-Eldrup model and compared to the radius expected from the surface tension of liquid. The radii are not identical, their difference rises with temperature. If one assumes the difference of radii as constant, the o-Ps lifetime calculated from the Tao-Eldrup model rises faster than the experimental one. The distinct rise of the difference of radii has no physical explanation in the accepted o-Ps annihilation model. This effect can be the result of radiation chemistry processes not taken into account so far in the bubble model.

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy as a technique of porous materials investigation is still under development. Both measurement conditions and lifetime spectra analysis methods have to be adapted to the requirements of positron porosimetry. If complex positron annihilation lifetime spectra of porous materials are processed, numerical methods of lifetime spectra analysis have to be used with a particular care. Among various methods of positron annihilation lifetime spectra analysis available, the most popular ones were tested implemented in programs MELT and LT. It was found, from the simulated spectra study, that a large number of counts in a spectrum is needed to obtain reliable results of analysis. Even then only an approximate solution is available. Determination of the approximation nature helps in a further interpretation of the results and in positron annihilation lifetime spectrometer setting adequate to the problem. For this purpose, a few complex spectra obtained from positron beam facility were tested. The results show a negligible influence of resolution function on long lifetime components, while the precise estimation of the background level is crucial. Also some distortions caused by imperfection of numerical analysis methods are pointed out.

Three materials: MCM-41, MSF and SBA-3 with a very similar pore diameter but different lengths of cylindrical pores were investigated using the nitrogen sorption method and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. The size of primary pores and interparticle spaces obtained by both methods is similar. However, volume ratios between the discussed kinds of pores found by the above-mentioned methods differ significantly. Such discrepancy is the result of both ortho-positronium migration and the inaccessibility of the pores for nitrogen. Comparing the results of nitrogen sorption and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy allows us to estimate that connectivity between the primary pores and the interparticle spaces is the highest in MCM-41 and lowest in SBA-3.

A series of C45 steel samples was burnished by shot peening with varying time of treatment. The samples were investigated by nondestructive positron annihilation techniques: angular correlations of two-quantum annihilation radiation and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. To determine residual stresses present under burnished surface the same samples were studied by destructive Davidenkov method. Change of absolute value of the weighted average of residual stresses over positron range in the series of the samples is in good agreement with change of S/W ratio obtained by angular correlations of two-quantum annihilation radiation. Both parameters increase during first 10 minutes of shot peening and then stabilize. Positron annihilation lifetime spectra allowed to identify two types of structural defects: smaller ones like vacancies or dislocations and bigger - probably clusters of vacancies. Increase in shot peening time causes reduction of positron trapping rate and lifetime rise in bigger defects.

Three experiments were performed consisting of evacuating air and volatile compounds from the sample, applying thermal treatment and rehydrating the sample. Distinct changes in positron lifetime spectra allowed the monitoring of alterations in the sample structure. The most likely origin of the particular components present in the spectra was able to be proposed from these data. The course of template removal from MCM-41 pores was investigated by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Two methods of removal were the object of interest: a decarbonisation after standard calcination procedure and a novel procedure - pyrolysis in vacuum. The shapes of positron lifetime spectra of decarbonised sample are determined by positronium quenching caused by presence of carbon deposit on the surface. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy allows also monitoring the evolution of empty space inside pores. During pyrolysis no conductive carbon is produced, so consecutive stages of template material transformation are easy to observe. In the case of pyrolysis the effect of pore emptying is obtained at temperature 500 K, lower comparing to calcination and decarbonisation (820 K).

Opis:
The paper deals with positron porosimetry (PP), which is based on positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). The numerical analysis of positron lifetime spectra for PP is more demanding than in most of other applications of PALS. The resulting intensity distributions of ortho-positronium (o-Ps) lifetimes are interpreted in terms of the extended Tao-Eldrup (ETE) model, which provides the dependence between the o-Ps lifetime and pore size. Additionally, the relation between the intensity of an o-Ps component and the pore volume allows obtaining pore size distribution (PSD). The value of the empirical parameter Δ, which is dependent on material, can be estimated from the temperature dependence of an o-Ps lifetime. The most unique feature of PP among other techniques that allow determination of PSDs is its ability to perform measurements in almost any conditions. This makes this method suitable for various in situ studies. In this review article, both the capabilities and the limitations of PP are discussed. The methods to overcome some of the limitations are presented.
