Opis:
Changes that occur on the local level can explain the processes on the population level and, at the same time, are the driving force of species adaptation. This manuscript reports data about genetic diversities of the fungus Schizophyllum commune on the level of a local population. Objects of the study were dicarious cultures of S. commune collected from 38 basidiocarps grown on the territory of Holosiivskyi National Nature Park, Lysa Hora Regional Landscape Park and Feofaniya forest parcel (Ukraine). Results showed similarity of genetic variability of S. commune in different local populations. The heterozygote deficiency of some loci that was discovered might have resulted from new forms of allozymes that have not become widespread or due to small population sizes. The degree of differentiation of genes between local studied populations was moderate due to the high flow of genes. The absence of spatial structuration of genotypes is established, and the Mantel test showed a lack of interconnection between the genetic component and the geographical coordinates of the samples. It has been suggested that wind direction and terrain are the factors that influence the genetic structure of local populations.

Opis:
The HLA system is highly polymorphic and commonly used as a marker to understand core population genetical aspects such as stratification, human migration, predisposition to diseases and tissue transplantation compatibility. Although HLA alleles are generally treated as equidistant molecular units in population genetic studies, the diversity of DNA allelic frequencies among populations is also considered to be crucial to interpret the observed HLA polymorphisms. This study compares the variation of HLA DRB1 alleles across various subgroups of both Indian and African Populations, using their respective allelic frequencies. The HLA DRB1 allelic frequencies for 3,153 individuals of 32 subgroups of both Indian and African populations, were collected from the Allele Frequency Net Database (AFND). Correlation matrix and Grid diagram were compiled using the R statistical package. Allele frequencies were analyzed for the respective population subgroups using XLSTAT. The North East Indian populations were completely devoid of HLA DRB1* 16, which is fairly present in south Indian populations. The South Indian populations harbor both HLA DRB1* 10 and HLA DRB1* 15 at relatively higher levels but are very scarce of HLA DRB1* 07, HLA DRB1* 09, HLA DRB1* 12 and HLA DRB1* 13. The alleles HLA DRB1* 03, HLA DRB1* 04 and HLA DRB1* 07 could represent an epicenter for the admixture of African, North-East Indian and South Indian populations.

Opis:
The paper summarizes the results of a long-term study on the ecology of Dreissena polymorpha (Pall.) in several dozen lakes of different size, depth and trophy. The abundance of adults, planktonic larvae, and settled postveligers was found to vary widely between the lakes, localities within a lake, and years. The temperature influences the period of appearance and abundance dynamics of planktonic larvae; wind affects their vertical and horizontal distribution in the water column; winds and water currents displace settling postveligers. Settling postveligers display preferences for various natural substrates: most often they settle on submerged plants, especially perennials. The age structure of D. polymorpha settled on plants (dominance of young individuals, at most 3 years old) differs from that in colonies settled on the littoral bottom. The abundance of mussel populations in lakes is primarily determined by the mortality at the transition from planktonic to sedentary life, and by the mortality of individuals settled on submerged plants.

Our paper considers open populations with arrivals and departures whose elements are subject to periodic reclassifications. These populations will be divided into a finite number of sub-populations.
Assuming that:
a) entries, reclassifications and departures occur at the beginning of the time units;
b) elements are reallocated at equally spaced times;
c) numbers of new elements entering at the beginning of the time units are realizations of independent Poisson distributed random variables;
we use Markov chains to obtain limit results for the relative sizes of the sub-populations corresponding to the states of the chain. Namely we will obtain conditions for stability of the relative sizes for transient and recurrent states as well as for all states. The existence of such stability corresponds to the existence of a stochastic structure based either on the transient or on the recurrent states or even on all states. We call these structures stochastic vortices because the structure is maintained despite entrances, departures and reallocations.

The comparison of phenotypic trait differentiation and genetic differentiation at selectively neutral genetic markers can indicate divergent selection on traits. Phenotypic trait differentiation (PST) andtwo multivariate analysis methods were used to determine the level of differentiation and relationships among seven Juniperus excelsa populations basedon 13 morphological characters of their cones, seeds, juvenile seedlings and 1+0 year old seedlings. Significant differences among populations were found for all morphological characters (P<0.001) apart from cotyledon length using ANOVA. According to Penrose and Squared Euclidean distances, the southeastern populations Bucak-Kestel and Gölhisar-Gölhisar (0.970; 12.374) were most similar. Aksu-Sorgun andE ðirdir-Barla populations, separated by a mountain range, were the most different populations (4.647; 47.157). Evaluatedas a whole, both multivariate analysis methods gave similar results. Phenotypic trait differentiation (PST) for 1+0 year oldseed lings that were grown in a common environment was similar in magnitude for the majority of traits as genetic differentiation at nuclear microsatellite markers (FST) suggesting the absence of divergent selection on these traits.

Opis:
Habitat fragmentation, caused by, among all, agriculture and urbanization, is one of the most important drivers of plant biodiversity decline worldwide. One of the signs of deteriorating zoogamous plant reproduction is pollen limitation, often associated with a decline in pollinator diversity and abundance. Various authors predict that the most vulnerable taxa are outbreeding plant species characterized by specialist pollination systems. We have, therefore, focused on self-incompatible Corydalis solida, an ancient forest, spring ephemeral plant, growing in three remnant urban populations in the city of Warsaw (Poland). Over two years, we checked for pollen limitation and recorded insect diversity and abundance for C. solida flowers. Our study populations composed of self-incompatible individuals were mainly visited by generalist pollinators, and produced more seeds when supplementally pollinated. Pollen limitation, however, was greater during 1 year with an early spring onset, when we observed a decline in floral visitors diversity and activity. This was probably an effect of phenological mismatch between plants and their pollinators, in this case, mostly social bees, i.e., over-wintered bumblebee queens and Apis mellifera. We conclude that for outbreeding zoogamous spring ephemerals, such as C. solida serviced by generalist pollinators, changing climatic conditions may override the effects of habitat fragmentation and influence their reproductive success.

Two diploid isolates of Armillaria gallica and 143 diploid isolates of A. solidipes were obtained from 145 samples of rhizomorphs, fruit bodies and infected wood of sessile oak and Scots pines from 5–10-year-old Scots pine plantations in three Forest Districts located 100–350 km apart in west-central Poland. Based on pairings among the 145 isolates, 18 somatic compatibility groups (genets) of A. solidipes were distinguished in the three plantations. Sequencing of ITS1/2 rDNA of 18 isolates representing the 18 genets delineated four nuclear haplotypes. This suggests that many of the A. solidipes genets are closely related and were possibly established by sib-related basidiospores. With a few exceptions there was general geographical specialization of genets but not haplotypes. Geographical specialization of genets and the dominance of single haplotypes suggest that the A. solidipes population results from clonal rather than sexual reproduction. Sequencing of the ITS1/2 and IGS-1 rDNA showed small nucleotide diversity in ITS1/2 rDNA and much more diversity in IGS-1 rDNA of the isolates of A. solidipes studied. However, none of these regions has sufficient resolution for the clear differentiation of A. solidipes from A. borealis. The sequences of the EF 1-alpha gene showed high interspecific variability in Armillaria species and very low intraspecific variability in A. solidipes. This gene is the most appropriate for reliable identification of biological species and subgroups of Armillaria. Its application is the most useful in ecological and epidemiological studies of Armillaria.

A review of rodent studies conducted in the Institute of Ecology is presented. The investigations took place both in the laboratory (mostly on Mus muscidus) and field conditions (first of all on Apodemus flavicollis, Clethrionomys glareolus and Microtus arvalis). The aim of the studies varied in time, and was always preceded by detailed, and often new, considerations on methods to be applied. Theoretical assumptions also evolved with time: from simple density-dependent approach to population demography, through the idea of the importance of population structures, to individualistic approach and neighborhood systems. A substantial part of the studies was aimed at interrelations between rodent species in heterogeneous habitats. The International Biological Program resulted in papers devoted to interrelations between rodent (secondary) productivity and basic habitat features (like food resources and their spatial distribution). Special attention was paid to confined populations, and among the long term (37 years) studies on a bank vole population inhabiting Crabapple Island.

Opis:
The process of genetic differentiation among conspecific populations constitutes the first stage of speciation, and its understanding is crucial for the advance of evolutionary studies. However, the underlying ecological mechanisms controlling gene flow between populations are still poorly known. According to the classical population genetic theory, genetic differentiation among populations results from spatial isolation due to physical barriers to dispersal. In the absence of such barriers in contemporary distribution of a species, genetic differentiation among populations was usually explained by past fragmentation of a species range, e.g. as a result of isolation in different refugia during the Pleistocene glaciations. In many extant species of animals and plants, distinct evolutionary lineages have non-overlapping geographical distributions, and the time of their splitting is often estimated at several million years, suggesting their long-term geographical separation. However, genetic studies on remains of Pleistocene mammals revealed that the correlation between phylogenetic relationships and geographical distribution does not necessarily imply long-term genetic isolation. The distribution of lineages was shown to dynamically change over time due to local extinctions and reinvasions. In some cases, range boundaries between genetically distinct populations were surprisingly stable despite lineage shifts, suggesting that they could have been shaped by ecological barriers that were relatively constant through time. Consistently, recent studies on extant populations of highly mobile animals with wide continuous ranges revealed cryptic genetic structure in the absence of physical barriers to dispersal, which may be shaped by ecological factors. This suggests that ecological speciation may play an important role in the process of formation of new species. Studies on the role of ecological factors in population differentiation have been constrained by limited knowledge of the relationship between phenotype and genotype. However, recent advances in molecular biology opened the possibility of studying genome-wide variability in natural populations, enabling identification of the genetic background of traits influencing fitness. The synthesis of population ecology and population genetics seems to become possible, and it may be expected to lead to a fast advance in evolutionary biology in the nearest future.

Estimation of selection effects on changes of a trait is of vital importance for the success of any plantbreeding program, and helps to select the desirable breeding method. Heritability and genetic advance areimportant selection parameters, and selection success is a reflectance of selection response. To estimate selectioneffects on rice genetic parameters, a research was conducted using 4 different generations (two parents:Neda and Sadri, and two segregating populations: BC1F1 and BC1S1). After development of a backcross population,a single plant (BC1#4) was selected based on its desirable performance, particularly in heading date andseven other morphological traits. BC1F1 population compared to mid-parent performance showed advance forheading date, plant height, tiller number, hundred seed weight, weight of filled seeds per panicle and grainyield per plant, while mean performance of BC1F1 population compared to BC1S1 population showed advanceonly for heading date, plant height, tiller number and grain yield. Prevalence of additive genetic effects incontrolling panicle weight, hundred seed weight, weight of filled seeds per panicle, plant height and headingdate was observed, and in contrast prevalence of non-additive effects in controlling grain yield was observed.High general heritability was observed for most traits, while only heading date and plant height showeda considerable specific heritability (60.7% and 67.5%, respectively), and grain yield showed a relatively lowspecific heritability (37.0%). High expected genetic advance (ΔGe) was obtained for tiller number (49.4%),followed by grain yield (43.5%) and plant height (35.5%), while the highest real genetic advance (ΔGe) wasobtained for heading date (-8.5%) and tiller number (5.4%). High selection success was obtained only forheading date (51.8%). Altogether, the obtained results gave promise for selecting progenies with early maturityand semi-dwarfism in early segregating generations, while they suggested preference of heterosis for improvementof grain yield.

The phenotypic differentiation of 16 provenances of Scots pine originating from a wide variety of habitats that range from lowland to southern highland locations in Poland was assessed during 47 years of their growth and development in the Carpathian Mountains. The traits, including height, diameter at breast height, stem straightness, and crown width, were used to evaluate the differentiation of the provenances in their juvenile period and at maturity and were examined for patterns of local adaptation. The populations from northern Poland were characterized by the best growth and productivity, whereas provenances from central Poland had the best stem quality. There were some changes in growth between provenances observed during the experiment, but the stand volume (m³/ha) in juvenile trees was closely correlated with that in mature trees (r = 0.979). There was a positive relationship between the productivity and the environmental conditions of the geographical origin of provenances with increasing values for the trees’ productivity from south to north. Additionally, the elevation above sea level of the original populations was inversely correlated with the growth achieved by the progeny. In general, most populations from the species distribution range in Poland tested in the severe climate conditions of the Carpathian Mountains showed good growth performance under that environment, characterized by low temperatures and short growing periods. Provenances from climatic zones outside mountain regions demonstrated great growth and productivity, which proved to be the most important for competitively outperforming the local populations. Our study demonstrates good adaptive potential of the tested provenances, as selection will favor fast-growing genotypes under the predicted environmental change scenario.

Morphology and anatomy of 20 Central European populations of the spring snail Bythinella Moquin-Tandon are described and illustrated.Detailed descriptions, drawings and SEM photographs, as well as measurements of shells, opercula, radulae and soft parts are presented, special attention being paid to the reproductive organs.Intrapopulation and interpopulation differences in 40 biometrical characters in males and 42 in females are analysed, for each sex separately, by means of descriptive statistics and ANOVA.Relations between variables are tested with Kendall’s correlation coefficient.Biometrical characters vary widely within and slightly between the studied populations, whose variability ranges overlap.The length ratios: shell/radula, bursa/bursa duct and bursa/receptacle, as well as the length of bursa copulatrix and ctenidium display a statistically significant S-N clinal variation.The wide intrapopulation variation combined with the slight differences between the distinguished morphospecies in almost all the morphological characters examined indicates a limited diagnostic value of these characters in Bythinella.

Statisticians are constantly looking for methods of statistical inference that would be both effective and would require meeting as few assumptions as possible. Permutation tests seem to fit here, as using them makes it possible to perform statistical inference in situations where classical parametric tests do not work. Permutation tests appear to be comparably powerful to parametric tests, but require meeting fewer assumptions, e.g. regarding the size of the sample or the from of distribution of the tested variable in a population. The presented tests make it possible to verify the overall hypothesis about the identity of both location and scale parameters in the studied populations. In literature, the Lepage test and the Cucconi test are most often referred to in this context. The paper considers various forms of test statistics, and presents a simulation study carried out to determine the size and power of the tests under normality. As the study demonstrated, the advantage of the proposed method is that it can be applied to small-size samples. A nonparametric, complex procedure was used to assess the overall ASL (achieved significance level) value by applying the permutation principle. For comparative purposes, the results for the permutation Lepage test and the permutation Cucconi test are also presented.

It appeared that Binomial based confidence interval is too conservative while the Normal based one does not keep the prescribed confidence level.

Opis:
Fusarium head blight (FHB) incidence, and colonisation of grain by Fusarium species on winter wheat grown in organic, integrated, and conventional systems as well as in monoculture, were studied locally in Poland, from 2002 to 2010. Fusarium head blight incidence differed throughout the study years. It was found to occur the most where rainfall was highest and where rainfall was the most prolonged before, during, and after flowering of wheat. Fusarium head blight incidence was generally less on wheat grown organically than on wheat grown in other systems. In some years, FHB was noted more in monocultures than in other systems. Fusarium poae was the most common species of FHB populations in wheat kernels, followed by F. avenaceum and F. tricinctum. Other species which occurred more rarely or sporadically were: F. culmorum, F. equiseti, F. graminearum, F. langsethiae, F. oxysporum, and F. sporotrichioides. There were found to be significant effects of the cropping system on grain colonisation by Fusarium in some years. There was a positive correlation between FHB incidence and number of kernels colonised and damaged by Fusarium, in all four systems. Inferences were drawn concerning the effects of different procedures in different production systems and the possible value for controlling FHB.

Opis:
The time of onset of survival of ciliate protozoa in the equine hindgut in new born foals was investigated. Daily faecal samples were collected from 6 new-born foals and studied under a microscope for examples of ciliates within the samples. The results of this study show that ciliates are first seen in faecal samples from the foal on day 5 post partum although these appeared to be voided and were assumed to be non-viable. However, by the following day the ciliates collected seen in the faecal samples appeared to be intact and were assumed to be viable. This observation is 5 days earlier than ciliates have previously been observed in faeces collected from the digestive tract of newborn foals.

Opis:
Allium sibiricum is one of the rarest plant species in the Sudetes and Carpathians. Inter simple sequence repeat DNA (ISSR) and morphological analyses were conducted to study the biogeographical relationships between geographically disjunctive populations of A. sibiricum in the Carpathians and Sudetes. The results clearly differentiated the Carpathian and Sudetes populations, but also showed a relatively high level of genetic similarity in specimens within certain groups of the Sudetes and Carpathian populations. The plants collected in the Karkonosze probably belong to a mountain form of A. schoenoprasum morphotype C which inhabits natural sites there. In contrast, the study found morphologically and genetically different plants inhabiting Pilsko Mt in the Carpathians. The plants from the Carpathians were present in scattered sites probably due to the activity of Vlach shepherds and the formation of large pastures. The species enlarged its local range due to this type of anthropopressure and likely hybridized with the cultivated Allium plants introduced by the shepherds. This may indicate that the populations on Pilsko Mt are of a partly anthropogenic character.

Opis:
The subalpine communities of Pinus mugo were destructed and replaced by pasture lands on plateau parts and moderately inclined slopes of the mountains during between the 15th andthe 18th centuries. The species were able to survive that pressure probably on the abrupt slopes of the glacial cirques. The pasturing stoppedin the 19th century, andthe mountain pine startedto reforest its previous habitats since that time. It was also plantedin several places andsome of contemporary populations can origin from the seeds of the Giant Mountains. In the latter case the populations on the plateau shall reveal differences in the cone characters from autochtonous ones from the glacial cirques. This study was structured on this hypothesis. The characteristics of seven Pinus mugo populations in the Giant Mts. were comparedon the basis of 15 morphological characters of cones. Each population was represented by at least 30 individuals, and for every individual 10 cones were examined. Four of the sampled populations, treated as local, occurred on the steep slopes of the glacial cirques andthe other three on the mountain plateaus, usedas pastures in the 17th to 18th centuries, potentially originatedfrom another region. Results show rather small differences among the comparedpopula - tions, independently of origin. The separation of the plateau from the steep slope ones is rather inconspicuous, if any. This suggests the local origin of plateau populations, even when planted.

Opis:
Using data from a Master's of Public Administration (MPA) program at a Mid-western regional university in the United States, this paper studies whether Learning Management Systems (LMS) have equivalent outputs relative to more traditional educational delivery systems. In essence, are current generation LMS, used for online only instruction, equivalent to traditional teaching models when examining race and gender? This study examined certain output criteria using regression analysis and found no statistically significant difference between online and on-ground students in terms of their MPA degree GPA. However, African American student performance was relatively weaker than non-African American students in terms of GPA regardless of whether they were admitted into the online or on-ground program. This finding is consistent with other studies examining on-ground only performance. We posit that this difference was caused by their lower grades before they entered into this master's program. To combat the gap, fair grading is a good but not sufficient practice, and additional resources and remedial approaches should be in place in order to better prepare African American students as competitive as other racial groups.

There are discussed in it the predicted changes in the number of the population aged 65 and more, and its structure according to sex, age, and the dwelling place (town-country). The analysis of the progressive process of the population’s aging as predicted for the future is preceded by the estimation of this phenomenon in the past, i.e. over the years 1950-1975. The entire analysis is closed with a comparison between the degree of progress in thé aging process of Poland's population and the predicted situation in other countries.
