The purpose of this article is to outline some issues discussed during the conference organized by JuraPark Solec Kujawski as part of the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of its existence. This text is not a report on the agenda of the conference, but is intended to include the content presented in a wider context of the changes in Polish museology in the last decade. These considerations will include such aspects as the attempt to define a contemporary museum, the research activity of these institutions and museum education, and the promotion of knowledge.

Opis:
Accession of Poland to the European Union induced a variety of changes in different areas of life, including education. A second language was introduced as a compulsory subject in kindergarten and primary school and two compulsory foreign languages in general lower and upper secondary schools. English is the most popular of all languages in all types of schools, regardless of the level of education they represent. Globalization of the English language, the process which can be observed nowadays, has a significant impact on actions taken by schools to popularize learning this language. Therefore, the research was performed with a view to achieving a better understanding of the popularization of English language learning in primary schools in the larger context of a variety of factors. Basing on the analysis of research results, the conclusions reflecting real needs of learners as far as the more effective English language learning is concerned have been drawn. Sharing the research findings with the primary schools which participated in the research will contribute to their practical application.

It is quite a problematic issue, whether there is any connection between popularization and institution. The article presents different understanding of the term ‘institution’, which appears to have more creative nature. The second part of the essay considers Michal Heller’s critical strategies of reading. Heller’s reviews seem to be a kind of popular science communication, tightly connected not only to the academic institutions. It is the relationship between the popularization and the institution that authorizes to talk about formation of the discourse.

After having distinguished the two main contexts for the transmission of knowledge – the esoteric and exoteric – the paper offers a systematic comparison between scientific and popular science texts in terms of inventio, dispositio and elocutio. The popular science texts tend to present knowledge in anthropocentric terms, showing the relevance of the message to the recipients’ everyday lives. They turn out to be shorter than genuine scientific texts, and this is achieved, in part, by eliminating information about the methodologies used. The user-friendly vocabulary offers the audience a sense of familiarity with the presented topic, which is, however, different from in-depth specialist knowledge.

The objective of this study is to conduct a stylistic analysis of the synopses publicized in the end-of-the-year ranking list of 2017 scientific “breakthroughs” from Science Magazine. The article provides a review of literature on science popularization (also known as science accommodation) and presents the typology of news values and rationalization cues that are used by editors to make science-related coverage both newsworthy and credible at the same time. The article lists the possible ways in which scientific findings can be stylistically constructed as “breakthroughs”. The analysis consists in quantifying and illustrating the typical stylistic maneuvers for framing selected science-related issues as “breakthroughs.” The article concludes with the implications of such constructions for the public understanding of science.

The article directs criticism at the system of the popularization of higher education and limiting it to quasi-production based on economic and market laws. The main drawbacks of contemporary education include:– a low level of preparing applicants for admission to the university,– test mania,– the elimination of individual contacts (enrollment interviews) with applicants for admission to the university during enrollment,– reducing requirements towards the students studying,– lowering the level of lectures and tutorials.

Martí Domínguez (1966) is a biologist, writer and journalist, the author of novels, essays, and press articles. In his novels Les confidències del comte de Buffon (1997) and El secret de Goethe (1999), he presents two great personalities of 18th century Europe and a scientific and cultural context of their lives and works. These novels contain information about debates, ideas, and theories related to the development of science (especially the natural sciences) in the Age of Enlightenment. In the article we study the narrative strategies used by the author in order to present issues regarding the history of natural sciences in modern Europe.

The article entitled Polish Theology Viewed from a Roman Perspective is the fruit of the author’s reflection on theology in Poland, after a stay of nearly 20 years in the Eternal City. Apart from many critical insights, it also contains several proposals concerning the renewal of the situation. One of them is an urgent necessity to present the results of research made by Polish theologians in the Western theological journals. Moreover, the article underscores the need of publication of reviews, which could indicate the best editions of the theological works and original researches of Polish theologians, appearing in Poland. It suggests the necessity to create a central website which could provide information about the activity of educational centers and theological associations in Poland. The author also proposes that extensive research should be undertaken aimed at establishing the original features, which distinguish Polish theology on the background of theological reflection practiced in the West.
Artykuł zatytułowany Polska teologia oczami rzymianina jest owocem refleksji autora nad teologią w Polsce, po blisko 20-letnim pobycie w Wiecznym Mieście. Obok wielu krytycznych spostrzeżeń zawiera również propozycje rozwiązania dostrzeżonych problemów. Tekst zwraca uwa- gę na konieczność prezentacji i popularyzacji wyników badań polskich teologów w zachodnich cza- sopismach teologicznych. Akcentuje również konieczność recenzowania godnych polecenia publi- kacji oraz oryginalnych wyników badań, ukazujących się w Polsce. Podkreśla konieczność stwo- rzenia centralnej strony internetowej, która gromadziłaby informacje o aktywności poszczególnych ośrodków i stowarzyszeń teologicznych w Polsce. Autor artykułu proponuje ponadto podjęcie sze- rokich badań mających na celu ustalenie oryginalnych cech, wyróżniających polską teologię na tle teologicznej refleksji uprawianej na Zachodzie.

Poruszana w artykule problematyka jest wypadkową dwóch tendencji obecnych współcześnie zarówno w kulturze, jak i nauce: demokratyzacji kultury i wzrastającego zainteresowania problematyką dziecka i dzieciństwa. Kwestia demokratyzacji kultury analizowana była począwszy od pierwszej połowy XX wieku w tekstach José Ortegi y Gasseta, Theodora Adorno czy nieco później Karla Mannheima. Zagadnienia związane z okresem dzieciństwa i demokracją podejmował na początku XX wieku John Dewey. Jako jeden z pionierów estetyki pragmatycznej podkreślał on znaczenie doświadczenia estetycznego w rozwoju człowieka. Podstawę wychowania stanowiło dla niego wyzwalanie zdolności indywidualnych ku realizacji społecznych celów. Kwestie dzieciństwa na gruncie socjologii w latach 50. XX wieku podejmował w swoich pracach, jeszcze raczej przedmiotowo traktując dziecko, Talcott Parsons. Od lat 90. XX wieku zainteresowanie problematyką wieku dziecięcego znajduje wyraz w rozwoju interdyscyplinarnych badań w ramach children studies. Zestawiając oba obszary problemowe, poniższy tekst jest próbą analizy działań edukacyjnych placówek wystawienniczych pod kątem uprzystępniania sztuki dzieciom. Podstawową kwestią poruszaną w artykule jest to, czy i na ile programy edukacyjne stanowią sprawne narzędzie upowszechniania, uprzystępniania sztuki. Ponadto w artykule postawiono następujące pytania: Czy są one formą dotarcia do dzieci pozbawionych kontaktu ze sztuką, czy jedynie narzędziem reprodukcji istniejącego porządku bazującego na elitarystycznej roli sztuki, do której dostęp mają jedynie grupy uprzywilejowane? I wreszcie jaką rolę odgrywa w nich dziecko: aktywnego podmiotu realizującego swoje potrzeby czy przedmiotu niezbędnego do realizacji polityki kulturalnej?
The issues discussed in the article are the result of two contemporary trends both in culture and science: the democratization of culture and the growing interest in the issues of children and childhood. The issue of the democratization of culture was analyzed from the first half of the 20th century in the texts of José Ortega y Gasset, Theodor Adorno, and later Karl Mannheim. John Dewey took up the issues related to childhood and democracy at the beginning of the 20th century. As one of the pioneers of pragmatic aesthetics, he emphasized the importance of aesthetic experience in human development. The basis of his upbringing was triggering individual abilities to achieve social goals. The issues of childhood in sociology in the 1950s were addressed by Talcott Parsons, who still viewed children rather more objectively. Since the 1990s the problem of childhood has been reflected in the development of interdisciplinary research within the framework of children studies. By juxtaposing both problem areas, the following text is an attempt to analyze the educational activities of exhibition establishments in terms of making art more attractive for children. The main issue discussed in the article is whether and to what extent educational programmes constitute an efficient tool for promoting art. Are they a form of reaching children who have no contact with art, or are they only a tool for reproducing the existing hierarchy based on the elitist role of art, to which only privileged groups have access? And finally, what is the role of a child in these educational programmes: an active subject realizing their needs or an object necessary for the implementation of cultural policy?

This article presents selected aspects of potential intersections of archeology and art, the potential resulting from it, and also threats. We presented our interpretation of the perception of this issue, which is from the archaeologist’s perspective. We referred to specific examples that refer both to our experience resulting from more than a year of cooperation between the Faculty of Archeology of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and the Faculty of Art Education and Curatorial Studies of the University of Arts in Poznań, as well as the external sources. An attempt was made to answer the question – how archaeologists can use the knowledge and experience of artists. We focused on the example of museology and the popularization of archaeological knowledge, how to make it more attractive, and to facilitate public reception. At the same time, we presented our observations on the examples of the use of archeology by artists as inspiration.

The main field of interest is the sensational character of texts with scientific subject matter. This is a characteristic trait of potentially every field of social life and almost every type of discourse, but in popular science texts and texts popularizing scientificknowledge it is presented in a more balanced way. On the basis of many examples of texts presented in online information portals the author shows how variously journalists value scientific discoveries and how this opinion depends on the evaluation of the scientific circles. In conclusion, it might be stated that the sensational character, so inseparably connected with tabloids, differs from the sensational character of popular science texts and texts popularizing scientific knowledge.

Complicated situation in Ukraine’s modern politics and mass media requires an examination of the historical background, in particular the situation of Ukrainian mass media on the eve of the elections to the Parliament of Ukraine on 28 October 2012. The main objective of the study is to analyze the activities and development tendencies of Ukrainian mass media on the eve of parliamentary elections of 2012. Methodology of the research is based on the use of historical and comparative-historical method in the analysis of the political content in mass media. The effect of information transmission as a factor of election influencing the mass media, the effect of political content carriers of the mass media, specialties of a particular mass media group activities are analyzed. The methodology for complex analysis of the mass media in election conditions is proposed.

The article presents the issue of philosophy and science cultivated by the Polish Jesuit, Fr Wojciech Tylkowski (1624-1695), a polymath viz. scientist of many varied interests. Tylkowski acted primarily as an educator and lecturer in philosophy at schools run by the Jesuit Order. Tylkowski aspired toward mastering all philosophical and natural science known to him. The notion of the complete scholar of the baroque period – the homo universalis  – was a crucial factor in his way of thinking and scientific work. The synthesizing of all knowledge known to him marked the purpose of his writing. For this very reason he also led independent studies, which resulted in his writing activity in the fields of philosophy, theology, astronomy, mathematics, geography, technology, art, and even agriculture. Tylkowski practised philosophy in the spirit of the Aristotelian-Scholastic tradition. An important area of his writing initiative is the so-called philosophia curiosa , understood as philosophy that evokes in the mind of the recipient an interest in the world and knowledge of the subject. Tylkowski was an original representative of this style of practising philosophy and science. His books, especially those written in the popularized convention, the philosophia curiosa , were directed towards a wide circle of readers.

In this review paper strip-till has been characterized from the point of view of the latest scientific research and practi- cal justification of the advisability of using and popularizing this cultivation method in Poland for various crop species. Analysis of scientific literature has shown that strip-till has a beneficial ef- fect on crops and soil properties. It reduces the number of tillage operations, and thus labour costs and fuel consumption. Further improvement of strip-till cultivation should be related to the im- provement of seeding units designed for this cultivation technol- ogy, as well as to the implementation of precision farming solu- tions related to the application of fertilizers and their effective use by plants. In connection with the implementation of cultivation technologies improving soil quality and reducing the negative im- pact of agriculture on the environment, strip-till technology has a chance to be much more widely used in Poland and may replace traditional plough tillage.

This paper describes the popularization of the Italian pedagogical thought in Polish textbooks about the history of education in general. It has shown that the authors of the textbooks gave a lot of information about the Italian school system and education and presented profiles of outstanding Italian educationalists, e.g. St John Bosco or Maria Montessori. This paper indicates that in the past centuries Poles were open to Italian intellectual currents, academic trips to the Italian Peninsula, and education at local universities. Polish textbooks about the history of education were popular (in the 20th c.) and still are an important source of knowledge about the history of Italian education. For the purposes of this paper, the contents of the most representative and popular textbooks have been analysed.

W artykule zastosowano retoryczną koncepcję trzech stylów, aby objaśnić pewne praktyki komunikacyjne w dyskursie akademickim. Wykorzystując zasoby perswazyjne stylu niskiego, autorzy skupiają się na retorycznym celu docere/probare, tj. nauczać/dowodzić. Ascetyczna rzeczowość stylu niskiego sugeruje czytelnikom, jakoby stylu w ogóle nie było, przekonując ich, że treść odzwierciedla rzeczywistość bez jakiegokolwiek retorycznego zapośredniczenia. Wybierając perswazyjne środki stylu średniego, badacze łączą cele epistemiczne i estetyczne, starając się osiągnąć retoryczny cel delectare, tj. zachwycać. Zajmujący styl pomaga wciągnąć czytelników w złożoną intelektualnie problematykę. Styl wysoki ułatwia osiągnięcie retorycznego celu movere, tj. poruszać, skłaniać do działania. Służy on do przedstawienia treści naukowych jako informacji użytecznych w podejmowaniu decyzji w życiu konkretnego czytelnika, zatem bywa wykorzystywany przez zaangażowanych naukowców i intelektualistów.
The author of the article applied the rhetorical framework of three styles (genera dicendi) to highlight some of the communicative practices employed in academic discourse. By utilising the persuasive resources of the plain style, authors focus on the rhetorical purpose of docere/probare, i.e. to teach/to prove. The sober matter-of-factness of the plain style suggests to readers that there is no style at all, convincing them that the content reflects reality without any rhetorical mediation. In choosing the persuasive means of the middle style, researchers combine epistemic and aesthetic goals, trying to reach the rhetoric purpose of delectare, i.e. to delight. An engaging style helps them draw readers into intellectually complex issues. The grand style facilitates the reaching of the rhetorical purpose of movere, i.e. to move or induce action. It serves to present science as a helpful resource for readers to make decisions in their lives, hence it is likely to be used by engaged scholars and public intellectuals.
