Opis:
Carotenoids (neoxanthin, violaxanthin, lutein and β-carotene) present in plant cell play a role in photoprotection. Industrial pollution causes oxidative stress in plants, while carotenoids react with free radicals and dissipate the excess of excitation energy. In this way carotenoids prevent the negative influence of free radicals on metabolism and can even restore some of the damages. This is confirmed by results of our analysis of the level of xanthophylls in 16 and 17-year-old trees of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). Developed from seed collected in north-eastern, the trees grow in a relatively unpolluted control site, and in a polluted site located 2 km for away from the Phosphorus Fertilizer Works. In the polluted site the environment is contaminated with SO2, NOx and F, Al, F, Pb, Cu. The needles analysed in this study were visually undamaged. Material was collected in experimental plot from 6 trees in October'98 and April'99, between 12.00 and 13.00 hours, at full sunlight. The pigments were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively by thin-layer chromatography. The paper presents results of content and distribution of neoxanthin, violaxanthin, lutein and β-carotene of Scots pine needles from a healthy control tree and a stressed tree. Marked differences in pigment levels depended on the stage of needle development and level of pollution.

Opis:
The studies on Zn, Pb and Mn content in the needles of Pinus silvestris and the surface layers of soil (0.0–0.2 m and 0.4–0.6 m) were conducted in 2010. The research stations covered residential areas, municipal parks, neighborhoods of busy streets, industrial establishments, waste dump sites and sewage treatment plants. The tests showed variability of the analyzed elements in the needles of P.silvestris and in municipal soils, depending on concentration of urban and industrial activity, road traffic and the depth of the examined layer of soil. The content of heavy metals in soil varied. Zn was character-ized by the highest variability, depending on the depth (50.3–52.4%), Mn slightly lower (38.5–42.2%), and Pb, the lowest (29.1–33.2%). It was evidenced that the values of the heavy metals enrichment factors of the needles are closely connected with concentration of the examined metals in the soil. Along with the rise of Zn, Mn and Pb content in the soil, the values of enrichment factors decreased. The strongest negative correlations were found in the case of Zn, both in 1-year old needles (r = -0.82, p<0.05), as well as in 2-years’ old ones (r = -0.83, p<0.05), slightly weaker in the cases of lead and manganese.

Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of the New York City. The borough of Staten Island differs from the other districts for being much more rural, agricultural and full of green areas. The picturesque landscape of the meadows named Fresh Kills is located in the middle of the Island. The name ‘Fresh Kills’ comes from the landfill’s location, along the banks of the Dutch name Fresh Kills estuary, in Western Staten Island. Since 1947, this place has been used as a garbage dump for the New York City metropolitan area. During the next fifty years, this area formed an artificial mound of waste occupying a surface of 2200 acres (890 ha). In 2003, the authorities of the City of New York decided to close the landfill and transform the Fresh Kill landfill into a recreational park, for future generation to use. Because of a very complicated system of recuperation, the park’s opening is scheduled for 2030. However, some of the parts of the Park are open to the public now. After completion, the Fresh Kills Park will be the largest park in New York City. It will be three times bigger than Central Park.

Opis:
The research on the influence of pollution emitted by the WBM-30 bituminous mass factories on the winter wheat-crop was carried out in 1981. The factory was situated in the agricultural area far from the farm buildings in the village of Trzebownisko. The experimental area was divided into four zones (three zones of pollution and one control zone). The wheat ear samples were collected during full grain ripeness per 100 ears from different plantations in three repetitions in each zone. They showed that all examined features, such as, e.g. the average ear length and 1000 grain mass were substantially different between the 1st pollution zone and control zone.

RTV coating
Opis:
Room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber is widely used to prevent pollution flashover with its excellent hydrophobicity and hydrophobicity transfer. However, RTV coatings are at the risk of deterioration and failure in heavily polluted operating environment. In this paper, RTV coated insulators with different suspension heights operating in coal ash polluted areas were sampled. Pollution degree, pollution composition and aging degree of coatings were tested. The result shows that the insoluble pollution contains Al(OH)3 filler precipitated from RTV coating, which indicates the aging of the RTV coating. The top surface coating is more affected by ultraviolet and rainwater than the bottom surface resulting in more serious degradation. As the pollution degree of the lower phase insulator is heavier than that of the upper phase insulator, the erosion effect of pollution on the RTV coating is more intense. The fillers and rubber molecules of RTV continuously precipitate into the pollution layer, leading to further aging. Therefore, the overall aging degree of the lower insulator coating is more serious than that of the upper insulator coating.

Opis:
The leaf blades of white ash Fraxinus americana L. and London plane tree Platanus acerifolia Willd. growing in heavy polluted industrial areas were studied for morphological and anatomical changes developed under the influence of industrial contamination. The aim of the investigation was to determine and compare the influences of air polluted with SO2, NxOx, Pb, As, Zn, Cu etc. on the morphology and the structure of the leaves of these deciduous trees. Both species are tolerant to environmental changes but with different environmental characteristics and tolerances and they are widely used for planting. Under polluted conditions, the trees strengthened the anatomic xeromorphic characteristics of their leaf structures, which gave them the opportunity to mitigate the stressful conditions of the environment. The observed responses are regarded as adaptive and compensative to the adverse effects of air pollution.

Opis:
Artykuł podejmuje zagadnienia związane z problemem oczyszczania gruntu skażonego w wyniku działalności klasycznych gazowni, które obecnie zostały wyłączone z eksploatacji. Przedstawiono opracowane metodyki chromatograficzne umożliwiające jakościową identyfikację i ilościowe oznaczenie poszczególnych węglowodorów alifatycznych i aromatycznych (TPH i WWA) w gruncie z wytypowanej do badań gazowni. Omówiono wyniki badań w skali półtechnicznej oczyszczania gruntu skażonego zanieczyszczeniami ropopochodnymi (TPH, WWA) z wykorzystaniem bioremediacji podstawowej i bioaugmentacji poprzez inokulację mikroorganizmami autochtonicznymi. Prowadzone badania pozwalają prześledzić przebieg procesu oczyszczania gruntu, dobrać optymalne dawki substancji biogennych i określić ramy czasowe prowadzonego procesu. Cały cykl oczyszczania gruntu monitorowano za pomocą chromatografii gazowej GC. Oceny stopnia biodegradacji poszczególnych węglowodorów alifatycznych dokonano na podstawie zmian zawartości oznaczonych chromatograficznie oraz za pomocą przyjętych wskaźników stopnia biodegradacji: C17/Pr i C18/F. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na biodegradację wielopierścieniowych węglowodorów aromatycznych występujących w oczyszczanym gruncie w znacznych ilościach. Opracowana chromatograficzna metodyka oznaczania WWA w gruncie umożliwiła ocenę biodegradacji poszczególnych węglowodorów aromatycznych. Ponadto podjęto próby opracowania modelu biodegradacji TPH i WWAs z zastosowaniem 17alfa(H), 21beta(H)-hopanu.
This paper undertakes issues related to the problem of purification of soil contaminated as a result of classic gasworks activities, which are now longer in use. Prepared chromatographic methodologies which allow for qualitative identification and quantitative determination of individual aliphatic and aromatic (TPH, PAH) hydrocarbons in soil from selected gasworks are presented. The results of the research on remediation of soil polluted with petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH, PAH) in semi-field scale with application of basic bioremediation and bioaugmentation with indigenous microorganisms are discussed. The research allows controlling a progress of remediation, selecting optimal doses of biogenic compounds and setting up duration of the process. The whole cycle of soil remediation was monitored with the use of gas chromatography (GC). Estimation of biodegradation degree of individual aliphatic hydrocarbons was based on changes in their soil concentration and accepted biodegradation indicators: C17/pristane and C18/phytane ratios. Particular attention was paid on biodegradation of PAH which were present in substantial concentrations in polluted soil. The elaborated chromatographic methodology for the determination of PAH in soil allowed for estimation of biodegradation referring to individual compounds. Moreover, an attempt of preparation TPH and PAHs degradation model with the use of 17alpha(H),21beta(H) - hopane was undertaken.

Opis:
The exposure of heavy metals in the Drenas site – Kosovo has risen dramatically in the last 30 years because of mining and smelting activities. The study investigated the heavy metal in soil, accumulation in different parts of apple trees near the industrial sites of Drenas. The accumulation ratio values of heavy metals were calculated to assess the potential health risks. The mean concentrations of the heavy metals in the soil were in the following order of magnitude Ni > Zn > Fe > Cr > Cu > Pb > Cd > As, while that in the apples were in the order of magnitude Ni > Cr > Fe > Cu > Pb > Zn > Cd > As, in the leaves – Fe > Zn > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cd > As and in the shoots – Zn > Fe > Cu > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cd > As. Compared to control, the contents of analyzed metals from plant tissues of apple trees in the contaminated area were significantly higher (p<0.001). The concentration of Ni, Pb, Cr, Fe etc. in the apple tissue increased along with the heavy metal content in soils in the polluted area. The high accumulation ratio values for Pb (1.1), Cd (0.62), Cr (0.93) and Ni (0.46) were characteristic for the investigated species and indicate the accumulation ability.

Opis:
The paper discusses the possibilities of modelling the bi-directional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) in sea areas polluted by oil. Three sea basin models are considered: a coastal one free of oil, one polluted by an oil film and one polluted by an oil emulsion. The following concentrations of oil were compared: for the film, 1 cm3 of oil per 1 m2 water surface, for the emulsion 1 cm3 of oil in 1 m3 of water. The optical properties of Romashkino crude oil were taken into consideration, as were various angles of incident solar light. The conversion of BRDFs into a directional distribution of the optical contrast of polluted areas is demonstrated.
