Opis:
It is not without reason that we reflect more and more on the causes of the current state of political thinking in Polish society. Indeed, in modern times, difficult and uncertain, and turbulent times of great transformation, human thought is clearly not keeping pace. Given the rapidly changing external circumstances we have become increasingly confused and inept. We do not really know how to deal with the emerging threats and challenges of modern times, described by the eminent sociologist and philosopher Zygmunt Bauman as the era of “liquid modernity”. It is noticeable that our perception and image of social reality and our role in it, including its political dimension, is quite imperfect and restricted, and that our ideological life is in deep crisis or has perhaps even disappeared.

Opis:
This paper addresses the issue of whether a proper history of political thought should avoid any contact with substantive political philosophy, as it was vehemently claimed earlier by Cambridge historians of political thought, or not. It argues that (A) a strong political or philosophical bias might kill the credibility of a reliable history of political thought, but (B), in this genre, it is by definition impossible to avoid taking on board politico-philosophical concerns. What is more, the paper also tries to show (C) the relevance of political philosophy for the history of political thought and vice versa. In particular, it will argue along the following two lines: (a) Without a political philosophical self-positioning any reconstruction of the history of political thought remains underdetermined and therefore uninstructive, and (b) without a look at the history of political thought political philosophy remains blind, alienated, theoretically unfounded and therefore potentially even dangerous. Methodologically, the paper aims to recapture some of the conclusions of the debates of the relationship of the two disciplines, with special attention to the French and British contexts (more particularly to the oeuvres of Rosanvallon and Skinner).

The paper discusses the social philosophy and political direction of conservatism, based primarily on tradition, social order, and reluctance to change. The author analyses the genesis of this phenomenon, shaped at the turn of the 18th and 19th century, by the revolutions that occurred at that time. The assumptions presented by the father of conservatism, the Englishman Edmund Burke, have also been discussed. On the basis of this, the features of modern conservatism have been identified, indicating the countries in which it is visible. Also, the discussion is based on the example of Poland, which is a state in which, on 25th October 2015, elections were won by the conservative Law and Justice party (PIS).

A reflection on the nation, its essence and function formed the key motivation in the National Party’s political thought. The Polish nation was treated subjectively, and the principle of a hierarchical nation organisation was disseminated. In the works by the National Party ideologists, the idea of the nation presented a strong emotional potential, closely related to a moral aspect. It was invariably proclaimed that the nation was a spiritual body. The National Party theorists were convinced that the national idea added real meaning to all forms of a person’s functioning. The Party members viewed the nation as such an important and priority issue that any indifferent personal approach towards the nation was considered unacceptable. It can be noted that, contrary to previous statements, typical of “the early nationalism” (at the turn of the 20th Century), the nation was no longer treated as the absolute, but rather it was viewed through the prism of its relation to God and the world of transcendental values. It was usually considered a kind of family, and a unique metaphysical being, with a strong emphasis placed on the spiritual and moral form of the nation.

This article establishes how ordinary people understand classical categories of political thought. By interpreting qualitative data, we show how contemporary Polish society conceives such fundamental concepts of political philosophy as ‘the individual,’ ‘society,’ and ‘the state.’ Finally, we point out the implications of our findings for political science and political sociology, especially in regard to popular political culture.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper was to specify what is the share of narrowly understood micro-ideology in the political thought of Law and Justice. Embarking on the analysis of the above-stated problem, we first and foremost fixed particular methodological assumption. As a point of departure for our analysis we adopted the conception of the ideological morphology by Michael Freeden. In line with it, we assumed that ideologies are not fully distinct entities but they interact with one another. They are also partly overlapping and thus they share some contiguous points. In accordance with the concept of populism, as worked out within our framework, we focused our attention on the problematics of elites and the people. As conceived of by Law and Justice, elites did not discharge their duties, alienating themselves from the society and caring mainly about their own socio-economic interest. Furthermore, the critique of elites was mainly related to their non-democratic genesis and artificially created putative “super-expertise”.Eventually, we proved that populism may be regarded as one of the phenomena characterizing the political thought of Law and Justice.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the problem of the place ascribed to liberal education (and most of all to humanities as constituting its essential part) in contemporary political thought. In times when many rightist as well as leftist thinkers diagnose a crisis of liberal democracy and its educational system, displaying much anxiety about the still-lowering level of citizens’ willingness to participate in a public sphere, some of them propose their diagnosis of such situation and postulates of reform aimed at raising the level of citizens’ engagement in democratic life. One of the means to achieving that goal is implementation of the idea of liberal education, which might work in favor of students’ character development, their acquisition of a holistic view of reality, and their consciousness of the fact of overlapping character of relations binding individual and communal wellbeing. The article aims at presenting theoretical ways of defending humanities in face of contemporary restatement of the role of liberal education in Western societies. The course of argument is following: firstly the transition made in XXth century from “liberal education” to “education to liberalism” (resulting in specialization and vocational character of science) will be traced. Then the opinions of critics to such model of education will be shown, focusing on the representatives of three political doctrines: republicanism, communitarianism and liberalism. In case of each of these group of thinkers their characteristic attitude towards humanities, will be displayed.

The aim of the paper is to present the influence of western culture on the political thought of ancient Greece. The first example presented is the world of Homer and the emerging differences between Greeks and Trojans. The work then turns to Herodotus, who clearly indicated the differences between the Greeks and the Persian-barbarians. The Greco- Persian conflict, described by Herodotus more universally as a conflict between East and West, is primarily a conflict of two different regimes. It clarifies the different values that guided the two sides, causing significant differences in the political sphere. The empha- sis, in the wake of Herodotus, is on conflict between the free poleis and eastern despotic monarchy. The paper shows how relations with eastern culture influenced the formation of internal political awareness and political thought in ancient Greece.

Social Europe, understood as a desirable political project, has been reflected in contemporary Polish political thought, especially after 2004. This paper explores the accounts of political thought of three political parties: the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), the Polish People’s Party (PSL), and the Self-Defence of the Republic of Poland (Samoobrona RP). Their political thoughts shared emphasis on the social aspects of EU integration. According to the assumptions propagated by these parties, a social Europe would be built by incorporating the welfarestate principles to the European level, becoming a response to the multifaceted and excessive globalisation process, and offering resistance to the neoliberal agenda. All the political parties discussed here focused on the social nature of a unified Europe, and on promoting the values of solidarity, equality, freedom, justice and democracy.

Bronisław Geremek was one of the architects of the main political changes in Poland and Middle Europe. He contributed to the peaceful democratic changes and implementing the socio-political democratic rules of cooperation to the Polish society. Manifesting the active attitude was in his opinion a duty, which resulted from the Polish intelligence tradition, but it was also connected with his own experience - he treated political activity as first and foremost service to the people in the name of the values timeless for the collective. This outline is a presentation of political reflection fundaments of Bronisław Geremek, based mainly on the press interviews conducted between 1988-2008.

The recent resurrection and rediscovery of Gilson’s early political writings broaden the traditional view of Gilson by allowing us to see him as a serious, engaged, political thinker. This essay traces the background of Gilson’s early political thought, the beginnings of a dramatic change both in Gilson’s activity and writings in the late 1920s, possible reasons for that change, and focuses on Gilson’s Pourunordrecatholique [For the establishment of a catholic Order]. This emblematic work of Gilson’s early political thought, which is a practical application of his christian philosophy, remains relevant to addressing serious religious and political issues confronting catholics today.

Opis:
Natural law, natural rights, and consent theory formed the language of popular sovereignty, to which appealed Parliament’s defenders and the Levellers during the English Civil War in the first half of the 17th century. The aim of the article is to reveal how the Levellers differed from the Parliament’s theorists in terms of the idea of popular sovereignty. These differences concerned primarily the understanding of the people and natural rights concepts, which was related to the political goals of the Levellers. In the political dispute that was the conflict between the king and Parliament, supporters of the latter appealed to the idea of popular sovereignty to justify Parliament’s activities, while the Levellers did so to defend the people from Parliament. To this end, they created an individualistic and contractualistic concept of popular sovereignty. The article presents this concept.
Prawo natury, uprawnienia naturalne i teoria zgody tworzyły język suwerenności ludu, do którego odwoływali się obrońcy Parlamentu, wśród nich także lewellerzy, podczas angielskiej wojny domowej w pierwszej poł. XVII w.
