Opis:
French West Africa (AOF) created by a decree of the 16th of June 1895, one year after the establishment of the Ministry for the Colonies, a federation of colonies, is an entity for coordinating French presence in West Africa. Administrative grouping under French rule until 1958 of the former French territories of West Africa. According to the 1946 French Constitution, Africans in the colonies were allowed to elect parliamentary representatives in three assemblies: the Chamber of Deputies, the Senate, and the Assembly of French Union. Also, each colony had representation at lower levels, for instance the general councils with headquarters at Dakar for the AOF, and the governor general as a high commissioner of the Republic. Each local council sent five representatives to the AOF. It is worth noting that for the elections, there were still two electoral lists and two categories of voters: one list for French citizens and another for the union citizens. Following the adoption of the new constitution, Africans became union citizens, rather than French subjects as they were before, but they were not yet unequivocally French citizens. The RDA, with its subsections at the level of each colony, was at first dedicated to the struggle for equality between France and the colonies, between the French citizens and the Africans who had not yet acquired that status. In 1944 seven Ivorian owners of crop export (coffee and cocoa) created an agricultural union, Syndicat Agricole Africain to defend their rights. Félix Houphouet-Boigny was the first chairperson of Syndicat Agricole Africain, he also became the first chairperson of Parti Démocratique de Côte d’Ivoire and of the transnational Rassemblement Démocratique Africain in 1946. Among other high-profile political positions, he held many ministerial positions in the French government from 1956 to 1959. At independence in 1960, Houphouet-Boigny became its first president.

Opis:
The first international organizations of political movements were founded in the nineteenth century, and, therefore, can be included in the classic conceptual categories of political science (party systems). However, at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries there were social changes related to the omnipresence of the Internet so it was necessary to ask whether organizations characteristic for the industrial era are present in the reality of the Internet era. Organizations included in the third stage of the internationalization process of political parties/ movements were accepted as the starting point of the analysis. The author concludes that contemporary organizations of international political movements (fourth stage) are networked, and have multimodal as well as multifaceted character, and differ from international ones established in the 20th century.

Opis:
Drawing empirically on the examples of the Church of Latter-Day Saints’ (Mormon) participation in anti-ERA (Equal Rights Amendment) ratification campaign and its latest attempts to influence other political issues of moral consequences (such as same-sex marriage) in the United States, the paper attempts to analyse the dynamics of a contemporary religiously motivated political movement.Despite being, on any of these issues, a part of a wider coalition of political actors, the Mormon church displayed a specifically religious motivation, justification and modus operandi. Owing to strong religious legitimacy of their power – based on the doctrine of continuous revelation and enhanced by a sort of “personality cult” of the Church President-Prophet developing in late 20th century – the leadership of the church has been capable of effective grassroots mobilization, achieved through a disciplined universal priesthood structure. While, from the theoretical point of view, this Mormon political movement is of a traditional, “old” variation (ideological and social cohesion of members, well-defined, stable membership, hierarchical leadership etc.) it has nevertheless been relatively successful in modern political environment. The Mormon engagement, at least in the anti-ERA campaign, had made a difference certainly in Utah, and probably elsewhere as well.

Opis:
The paper focuses on Solidarity, Solidarity…, a collective project made in 2005 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the worker’s movement. Thirteen novelettas demonstrate various approaches towards the so-called “Polish August” of 1980, ranging from “comemorational”, praising the leaders of the movement, to critical, stimulating new interpretations of Polish history. The theoretical foundation of the analysis is built upon Deleuze’s theory of “time-image”. Although it may be argued that Deleuze’s work deals primarily with film style and the historically shifting aesthetics of the cinema, it is also justifiable to state that (if treated metaphorically) the Deleuzean “Time-Image” is based on the concept of a journey into the realms of the Forgotten, whereas its spectator is forced to rework his position in the field of history. In the paper, special attention is given to episodes which deal with the nature of history in a specific way. In Jacek Bromski’s short story, a former dissident asks his oppressor for a loan, leading to a replay of his interrogation. In Robert Glinski’s short story, Japanese tourists take pictures of the deserted Gdynia shipyard where Solidarity began. In Juliusz Machulski’s novelette, Solidarity never happened, so the director ponders making a movie about the heroic Battle of Lenino. These short films trace the inability to cope with the heritage of Solidarity, which became a deserted space in public debate during the course of its demolition and reconstruction.

The article presents Polish political movements which spread racist ideas at the turn of the 21st century. The variety of racist groups is one point of interest, since it includes both skinheads and slavic neopagans. Another point is presence of international racist organizations (Blood&Honour, The World Church of the Creator) in Poland.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to analyze the ethno-political movements of the Russian minority in post-Soviet countries after the annexation of the Crimea to Russia and attempt to answer the research question: how annexation of the Crimea caused and/or strengthened among the Russian minority living in those countries with separatist tendencies. The author analyzes the activity of Russians living in former Soviet republics selected, pointing to their behavior towards annexation and activity within the organization in which they operate. In his concluding remarks comes to the conclusion that due to the annexation of the Crimea to Russia, ethno-political movements of the Russian minority in post-Soviet area will be even more strongly oppose discrimination against the Russian people and actively fight for their rights. The current activity of the Russian post-Soviet area suggests that they will continue to work towards achieving its goals, while activity is (also of a separatist) will depend largely on domestic policy the authorities of the country in which they live, as well as the Kremlin’s policy to compatriots abroad.

This article concerns the problems related to defining Polish urban movements. In the first part of the article the author analyses structural changes in contemporary social movements. The author focuses primarily on the analysis of issues such as new manners of communication and structural transformations in social movements. The second part of the article is devoted to the specificity of Polish urban movements, analyzed as crucial social agents of cultural change. Polish society, which had previously become deprived of the social and cultural foundations of modern urbanity, has nowadays become an urban society. As such, it requires new narratives and a new urban language. These cultural foundations for a new urban identity are being built and supplied through Polish urban movements.

Opis:
The article is an attempt at showing the reconstruction process of the Polish Christian Democratic movement and the decline of the Polish People’s Republic (1988–1989). The issue in question has not been previously studied by many researchers. They have usually focused on the history of the Stronnictwo Pracy, social Catholicism, the activity of various lay Catholic circles (usually licensed ones), and the structure of the Labour Party (Stronnictwo Pracy) among the emigrants. What is more, it should be stressed that most of such analyses dealt with the period between 1944/45 and 1956, and in rarer cases, the decades of Władysław Gomułka’s and Edward Gierek’s rule. The 1980s (particularly the late portion of the decade) still require detailed research. In a way, the present article consists of two parts. The former one synthetically presents attempts at reactivation of the Christian Democratic circles after October 1956 and initiatives aiming at the reconstruction of Christian Democratic circles. This led to the establishment of the Polish Catholic Social Union (PZKS), which the initiators (mainly Janusz Zabłocki) intended to provide as a foundation for the reconstruction of the Polish Christian Democratic movement. The author has presented the main directions of PZKS activity, internal disputes (in the fields of ideology, politics and tactics) and the achievement of the party with regard to broadly understood political thought. The latter part of the article, which should be regarded as the main (fundamental) one, analyses the reconstruction process of the Polish Christian Democratic circles itself. The activities of the Christian Democratic Club of Political Thought, which was supposed to provide infrastructure for the future Christian Democratic movement (with regard to programme, politics and organisation). The focus is also on the political thought of the Club, its achievements in the field of programme and strategy related to the political changes in the country (e.g. the Round Table talks, June elections of 1989). What was equally important was the relationship between the Club and other opposition circles and licensed groups of lay Catholics (e.g. PZKS, PAX Association, Christian Social Association). The article has been based primarily on source materials of various provenance. The role of academic studies has only been auxiliary.
