Opis:
On Karkonosze Mts area investigation on some soil forming factors influence on total nitrogen content and C/N ratio of soil were conducted. The objects of researches were forest and meadow brown acid soils and podzols. Soil profiles were developed from granites and mica slates and localized in altitude range 650–1350 m a.s.l. The soils had texture of clay sands, very acid and acid reaction, high hydrolytic acidity and high content of carbon and nitrogen and high C/N ratio. Higher value of C/N ratio and carbon content of O and Bbr horizon was determined in the forest soils than in the meadow soils. The investigations showed influence of soil parent rock on carbon content of Bbr, Ees, Bhfe and C horizons. Soils developed from mica slates had higher carbon content than soils developed from granites. The influence of climatic condition were revealed in Bbr and parent rock horizons. Content of carbon and nitrogen which raised along with the altitude up to 1100 m a.s.l. Above 1160 m a.c.l. decrease of C/N ratio in O horizon has been observed.
Na terenie Karkonoszy prowadzono badania dotyczące określenia wpływu wybranych czynników glebotwórczych na zawartooeć azotu całkowitego i stosunku C/N w glebach. Obiektem badań były gleby łąkowe i leoene należących do typu gleb brunatnych kwaoenych i bielic. Gleby leśne wykazywały większy stosunek C/N, a w poziomach O, Bbr i C zawierały więcej węgla niż gleby łąkowe. Współzależność pomiędzy rodzajem skały macierzystej gleb a zawartością węgla zaznaczyła się w poziomach Bbr, Ees, B, C – gleby wytworzone z łupków łyszczykowych zawierały go więcej niż gleby wytworzone z granitów. Wpływ warunków klimatycznych uwidocznił się w poziomach genetycznych Bbr i C. Profile gleb położonych wyżej zawierały więcej azotu i węgla niż gleby zlokalizowane niżej.

Opis:
The studies focused on phosphorus speciation in Gleyic Podzols of the supra−flood terrace of the Słupia River, south from Słupsk (N Poland). The content and within profile distribution of phosphorus were considered in the context of parent material origin and the influence of podsolization, high groundwater level, forest vegetation and vicinity of the town. Four soil profiles representing Gleyic Albic Ortsteinic Podzols and Umbric Gleyic Albic Ortsteinic Podzols developed from aeolian sand were described. Samples were taken from distinguished horizons and physical and chemical properties were analyzed using standard procedures. Sequential extraction of phosphorus was performed by the method of Hedley et al. [1982]. The soils were characterized by strong acidic reaction, high abundance of organic matter and low degree of mineral substrates weathering. Profile distribution of free iron oxides was typical for Podzols. The content of total phosphorus in parent materials varied from 142.2 to 365.0 mg/kg, whereas in solum from 103.0 to 1035.6 mg/kg, reaching the highest values in B horizons and the lowest in E horizons. The noted concentration was high as compared to the soils of the same type within the area of Poland. Increased phosphorus concentration can be caused by the influence of high groundwater level and vicinity of the town, as a source of biogenic substances. The predominance of residual fraction in solum evidences young age of the studied soils, which is confirmed also by the results of thermoluminescence dating. Profile distribution patterns of total phosphorus and its fractions reflects the influence of groundwater, vegetation and soil−forming processes in turnover of this element. The results confirm also strong linkage between iron and phosphorus in the soils.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to present the main characteristics of the “Glinki” research area together with results of the first measurements on tree number, density, distribution and species composition carried out in 2011. The research was conducted in a free-of-forest management part of the Toruń military area which is located in one of the biggest inland dune fields of Europe. The “Glinki” research area was established in 2011 and consists of two plots (together 26.3 ha), which are in close proximity to each other. After the last fire in 1991, secondary succession has been the main factor shaping vegetation on both plots. For every plot, the location of all trees of at least 1 m height (560 in plot I and 292 in plot II) was determined. These measurements were subjected to spatial analysis in ArcGIS 9.3 with special emphasis on the exposure of the dune slopes. The main tree species on both plots were Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris, and birch, Betula pendula, (82 % and 17 % of all trees respectively). Tree density 20 years after the last fire was very low (32 trees/ha), which mainly resulted from the lack of a sufficient source of seeds in the close vicinity of the plots during the first years after the fire. We also found that tree distribution was related to the main direction of seed inflow and land relief. Tree density was much higher on dune slopes with a northern exposure when compared to other slope exposures, which resulted from different site conditions on the different slopes.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the influence of lithological and pedogenic factors in the shaping of Cu, Ni and Zn distribution patterns in the profiles of Brunic Arenosols and Gleyic Podzols of the lower supra-flood terrace of the Słupia River, which is located outside the range of significant anthropogenic sources of pollution with these metals. The contents of the investigated metals were analyzed in aqua regia extracts of samples collected from three profiles of Brunic Arenosols, composed of river sands, and three profiles of Gleyic Podzols, composed of river sands transformed by eolian processes. In general, river sands contained higher amounts of Ni and Zn (2.6–6.9 mg·kg-1 Ni; 10.3–16.2 mg·kg-1 Zn) compared to eolian sands (1.2–2.4 mg·kg-1 Ni; 3.3–17.3 mg·kg-1), while the content of copper tended to be higher in eolian sands (1.3–1.9 mg·kg-1) than river sands (0.1–1.5 mg·kg-1). The observed differences between the two types of sand are due to the loss of fine granulometric fractions and various minerals during eolian processes. Higher concentrations of the investigated metals in soil solum as compared to parent material are due to their uptake from deeper parts of the soil by roots and subsequent return to the soil surface by litter fall. Therefore, the highest concentrations of Cu, Ni and Zn were observed in ectohumus. In the mineral component of the soil, the highest concentrations were observed in organic matter-rich A and B horizons, which indicate close interactions between heavy metals, humic substances and iron oxides. The vertical distribution of the investigated metals in the profiles of Gleyic Podzols indicates their leaching during podzolization. The observed contents of Cu, Ni and Zn, both in Brunic Arenosols and Gleyic Podzols, were lower than the geochemical background, which confirms that anthropogenic contamination of the studied area with these metals is marginal.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to determine the dynamics of soil temperature on inland dunes in the Toruń Basin (N Poland) with reference to the two methods of site preparation: homogenization of belts with a forest mill (FR) and preparation of trenches with a double−mouldboard plough LPZ−75 (LPZ). The study was conducted in a young Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) plantation on plots with soil prepared by a forest mill on north− and south−facing slopes of a dune (FR−N and FR−S respectively) and with soil prepared with a plough on the ridge of a small aeolian mound (LPZ). On each plot a soil pit was dug and soil samples were taken from distinguished horizons for laboratory analyses. Besides, from April to December of 2013, at interval of ca. two weeks, soil temperature was measured at the depths of 3, 10, 25 and 50 cm. To estimate daily amplitudes of temperature in topsoil on the studied plots, in a sunny summer day (23.08.2013) the temperature was additionally measured from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. with an hourly interval. These measurements were taken at the two upper depths (3 and 10 cm). Despite the fact that soil surface was distinctly darker for belts prepared with a mill than in trenches prepared by a plough, soil temperatures were almost regularly lower in FR−N and in FR−S than in LPZ. This concerns all the investigated depths. The differences were explained by much higher moisture of soil material in belts what involves higher thermal capacity and with that slower heat of a soil, as well as causes higher losses of thermal energy for evaporation. Another agent explaining this was indicated to be related to high porosity of materials found in the belts. Namely, especially in dry periods, high volume of soil pores are filled on the FR plots with air what impedes heat transfer in a soil. It was concluded that stated in a previous study worse growth of pines planted in milled belts than in tranches prepared with a plough was unlikely related to differences in soil thermal conditions. Thus, differences in growth dynamics of young pines in plots with site prepared by the two studied methods are caused by other reasons rather as primarily other competitive impact of weeds and differences in soil water conditions occurring at root system of young trees.

Opis:
The research was conducted in a young Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) plantation located in a dune area of the Toruń Basin (N Poland). The aim of the study was to investigate differences in dynamics of soil water conditions followed different method used for site preparation. The three plots were investigated in the study: belt of soil prepared by a mill, north−facing slope of a dune (FR−N), belt of soil prepared with a mill, south−facing slope of a dune (FR−S) and soil prepared with a plough (furrows) on the ridge of a small aeolian mound (LPZ). On each plot soil samples were taken and soil moisture was regularly measured from April to December of 2013 (the TDR method). The measurements of soil moisture were taken at four depths (3, 10, 25 and 50 cm) at intervals of ca. 2 weeks. Additionally, soil moisture was also measured on 25.08.2015. It was done to determine soil water conditions for a deep summer drought (the measurements were taken twice this day – just before and after rain which turned to be the first since ca. a month). Reserves of soil moisture and shares of water unavailable to plants were calculated for every measure day for each study plot. As a result of higher organic carbon content, values of soil actual moisture as well as reserves of soil moisture were almost regularly higher for belts mixed with a mill than for furrows prepared with a plough (fig. 1, 3). Opposite relation was found, however for the summer drought (tab. 2). This was explained by the higher repellence of rich in organic mater, dried material occurring in belts. On 25.08.2015 much lower improvement of water conditions after rain was also stated for this material than for topsoil in LPZ. Unfavoured soil water conditions for plants occurring in belts in dry periods could explain relatively low dynamics of pine growth revealed for the variant of soil preparation in a previous study. However, it was concluded that a forest mill should be recommended for forestry, because the device much less disturbs topsoil than a plough. Besides, differences in growth parameters of pines followed different methods of soil preparation used before planting decline in next years of a stand growth.
