This article sheds light on Witold Gombrowicz’s relationship with his German publisher Günther Neske and on his attempt to join another publishing house Piper & Co. Verlag in particular. The article discusses a so far mistakenly presented aspect of history of his German reception. Zybura’s research is generally based on the unpublished correspondence, part of the bequest of the German Slavist Heinrich Kunstmann (1923–2009) held at the Willy Brandt Center for German and European Studies at the University of Wrocław.

Opis:
Successful in vitro propagation through ex vitro rooting mechanism has been achieved in Piper longum by nodal shoot segment cultures. Shoot tip explants were less proliferative compared to the nodal meristems. The explants were sterilized using 0.1% HgCl2 and cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with various concentrations of growth regulators. MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) was found suitable for bud breaking within four weeks. Kinetin (Kin) was not reported impressive compared to BAP in culture induction response. The shoots were multiplied and elongated on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L each of BAP and Kin and 0.1 mg/L indole-3 acetic acid (IAA), where the shoots were elongated up to 5.8 cm length. Rooting and acclimatization was achieved by ex vitro rooting methods using 300 mg/L indole-3 butyric acid (IBA) for 5 min, and 5.3 roots with 3.2 cm average length were observed. The rooted shoots were transferred to the greenhouse for acclimatization. The hardened plantlets were transferred to earthen pots and maintained in the greenhouse. Normal flowering was observed in micropropagated plants of P. longum.

Opis:
In 1700s−1800s dry fruits of Piper nigrum L. were considered as an effective mean of wood protection despite of lack of experimental research. The extract was in use still at the beginning of 1900s. The paper presents results of feeding of big old house borer (Hylotrupes bajulus L.) larvae in Scots pine sapwood after 10 and 20 weeks. Before the larvae introduction samples were saturated with alcohol extract.

Synthesis of nanoparticles using plant leaf extract is an eco-friendly, non-toxic and cost efficient approach in the field of nanotechnology. In this study, biosynthesis of stable copper nanoparticles were prepared by using Ocimum sanctum and Piper nigrum extract. These biosynthesized Cu nanoparticles were characterized with the help of X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The crystalline size of the Copper Nanoparticles prepared from Tulsi extract is little smaller than Copper nanoparticles prepared from Pepper extract. SEM images of Copper nanoparticles showed that the cluster formation, presence of smaller and larger grains. FTIR analysis revealed that the functional groups present in the Copper nanoparticles prepared from both Tulsi and Pepper extracts. Thus, this method can be used for rapid and ecofriendly biosynthesis of stable copper nanoparticles and can be used for catalytic agent, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-biotic, nanosensor, super conducting material, solar cell applications.

We assessed the biological activity of a crude extract, a mixture of several fractions, and a pure compound obtained from Piper ovatum Vahl against promastigote and amastigote forms of Leishmania amazonensis. The medicinal plant P. ovatum is used popularly as an anesthetic and anti-inflammatory. This study included the extraction process and bioassay-guided fractionation by the adsorption chromatography and Sephadex LH-20 method. A progressive increase in the antileishmanial effect was observed in the course of fractionation. The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) for dichloromethane-ethyl acetate (1:1 v/v) fraction was 2.1 μg/ml and 24 μg/ml; mixture of piperovatine: piperlongumune (2:3) 0.9 μg/ml and 24 μg/ml; piperovatine (1) 9.5 μg/ml and 10 μg/ml; and piperlonguminine (2) 2.5 μg/ml and 9.0 μg/ml, for promastigote and amastigote forms, respectively. Cytotoxicity analysis indicated that these toxic concentrations were much higher for J774G8 macrophages and Vero cells than for the protozoans. The mixture of piperovatine: piperlongumune (2:3) showed important antiprotozoal activity against the amastigote and promastigote forms of L. amazonensis, and it produced morphological changes in promastigotes and amastigotes at 0.9 μg/ml and 24 μg/ml (50% growth inhibition concentration), respectively, including intense cytoplasmic vacuolization, mitochondrial swelling, and mitochondrial damage, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy.

Opis:
Current standards for the measurement of the SI derived unit of sound-in-air pressure, the pascal, are based upon microphone reciprocity calibration and are achieved indirectly through microphone sensitivity. These methods require microphones of specific geometry and performance characteristics, effectively artefacts, and are traceable through standards for electrical and dimensional units. Measurement of acousto-optic interactions can provide a direct approach to measuring sound pressure. One acousto-optic interaction is the periodic scattering of photons caused by particles moving in a sinusoidal manner due to propagating sound across interference fringes formed at the intersection of two coherent laser beams. The sequence of these scattered photons, which is collected using telescopic optics and generated by a single photon counting device, can be autocorrelated to yield the periodicity of the photon events. Through mathematical analysis of the autocorrelation function it has been shown that acoustic particle velocity is inversely proportional to the time of the first minimum. This has effectively been shown for measurements in acoustic standing wave tubes and has been developed into a method which can be applied in an anechoic chamber. This paper describes the design and implementation of such a system which allows for a comparison of sound pressure measurements using optical and microphone based techniques.
