Opis:
This paper presents the results of a study of bird populations connected with the oldest forest stands of pine coniferous forests in Kampinoska Forest, where the pine trees are minimum 160 years old. It presents the basic results concerning the distribution, selectiveness and habitat preferences of hole-nesters and the birds connected with old forests in connection with habitat characteristics. The studied areas were dominated by hole-nesters, and a significant share was of birds connected with gaps left after broken trees. A large group was made up by birds which collect invertebrates among trees and then the species which feed on trunks and branches. Large dimensions of pine trees and numerous cracks in bark, cracks in trunks and hollows under windfallen tress served as microhabitats for particular bird species. The index of species diversity and number of pairs were similar in every area, probably due to dozens of years of forest protection, thanks to which similar quantity and quality parameters developed in the areas.

Opis:
At present, forest fire research is becoming especially relevant in Ukraine. This study examines patterns of forest fuel accumulation in pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands that grow in different soil conditions with different pine stand structure. To estimate the load of forest fuel of different fractions, a combined methodology was used: the weighing method and the FIREMON (fuel load estimation) method. It was found that increase in surface forest fuel loads is not directly proportional to forest stands’ age. Fractional size distribution, capacity and loads of forest fuel depend on several factors, among which the greatest role is played by forestry characteristics of the pine stand. It was determined that in the forest site conditions of type C (fairly rich soils) in Kyiv Polissya, the share of forest litter compared to pine stands that grow in poor soil conditions (A) is smaller, ranging from 41% to 76% of the total forest fuel load. The mass proportion of the duff layer varies from 15% in young forest stands to 43% in mature stands. It was established that changes in forest fuel fractions for 1, 10, 100 and 1000 hours varied insignificantly with age rate. The share of substratum woody debris of 10 and 100 hours was insignificant and depended more on the forestry treatment regime on these sites. The mass proportion of coarse woody debris (1000 hours) was also insignificant, varying from 0% to 5.9% of the total load of surface fuel.

Opis:
The paper deals with the dynamics of structure, diversity and growth of natural pine stands without direct human impact during the ten-year period in Nature Reserve (NR) Kostelecké bory, Czech Republic. The objective was to determine the main characteristics of the spontaneous development of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) forest stands in relation to their naturalness, ecological stability and adaptation to climate change and air pollution stress. Horizontal and vertical structure and species diversity of the tree layer, dead wood and natural regeneration of each permanent research plot (PRP) were evaluated (n = 6, 50 × 50 m /0.25 ha/, Northern Bohemia, 410–425 m above sea level). The average ring series of PRPs were correlated with the climatic data (precip- itation, temperature) according to individual years from the Doksy climatic station, and the air pollution data (SO2 in 1988–2015, NOX and AOT40F – ozone exposure in 1992–2015) from Radimovice station. In 2016, the stand volume increased by 26.0% to 136 m3 ha−1 (108 m3 ha−1 in 2006) and the volume of dead wood increase by 127.2% to 27 m3 ha−1 (12 m3 ha−1 in 2006). The horizontal structure of tree layer and natural regeneration was predominantly aggregated to random. More distinct changes in biodiversity and structural characteristics occurred in the natural regeneration (21.5%) compared to tree layer (2.8%). The precipitation had a significantly higher effect on radial growth compared to temperature. The lack of pre- cipitation in growing season and high temperature in previous autumn and winter were limiting factors for growth. Climatic factors had significant effect on diameter increment in July of the current year (P < 0.01) and June of the current and previous year (P < 0.05). Radial growth was negatively correlated with SO2 con- centrations (P < 0.01) and ozone exposure (P < 0.05). NOX concentrations had low effect on radial growth. The natural stand dynamics had positive effect on biodiversity and functional integrity of natural pine eco- systems.

Opis:
The aim of our study was to quantify the differences in the regeneration-degeneration processes in pine and mixed oak-pine forest habitats in the Kampinos Forest (central Poland). We investigated whether the regeneration rate depends on habitat type, whether there is a relationship between the bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) cover and the degree of community deformation, and which habitat type has been most invaded by alien plant species. Our results indicate that the constant loss of pine forest habitats, which has been observed since the 1970s, is continuing. The less deformed communities generally have more bilberry coverage, the stands in pine forest habitats are older and less deformed, and the stands in mixed oak-pine forest habitats are more susceptible to the spread of alien species, but are able to regenerate faster after a disturbance. These results are in line with observations from other parts of Poland and other European countries.

The illumination under the canopy in different types of pine and spruce forests is considered. The research was carried out in different points of the Northern taiga of the Arkhangelsk region. Illumination was measured using a luxmeter in different directions: at the level of the moss-lichen layer, at the level of the grass-shrub layer and at a height of 1.3 m; at different distances from the tree trunk; at different distances from the edge of the forest. Illumination in pine forests at the level of the moss-lichen layer is 2.3 times higher than in spruce forests. Under the canopy of spruce forests, it is 1–3%, and in the pine forests, 3–9% of the illumination in the open. Illumination from tree trunks to the edge increases in pine and spruce forests equally. The lowest illumination is observed at the level of the moss-lichen layer, then it increases to the grass-shrub layer, and then practically does not change. However, the difference between pine and spruce forests is consistently high 47%. The decrease in illumination in the tree stand as it moves away from the edge in blueberry pine forests is observed up to a distance of 10 m from the edge, and in blueberry spruce forests up to 6 m.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine direction, rate and character of the changes in coniferous forest communities caused by anthropogenic stress factors (alkaline emission and imission) changing with time. To fulfil this goal, we have performed comprehensive studies of soils and plants at the study sites located in coniferous forest communities remaining under direct influence of cement and lime industry in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. There were differences in the accumulation of elements in pine needles collected at alkalized sites in comparison with needles from the control site: Ca content was 2.5 times higher and Cu, Pb and Sr contents were 2–3 times higher, while Al and Fe, and Mn contents were twice and 10 times lower respectively. SEM analysis of morphological features of pine needle surface, in particular degree of preservation of epicuticular waxes can be as an indicator of assimilatory organ degeneration caused by dust deposition which induces wax layer erosion. Declining species number and biodiversity, particularly conspicuous at the Sitkówka site, was a general tendency observed over the study period (from 18 to 10 years). Other noticeable processes include slow regenerative changes of the community with a tendency towards higher contribution of acidophilic coniferous forest species with lower light and temperature requirements and suppression of meadow, ruderal and associated taxa. Further studies are required in order to define succession rate and direction of changes in species composition of these communities.

Opis:
Geobotanical studies of the resource lingonberry Vaccinium vitis-idaea L. of different-aged communities of the pine forest with mosses on the territory of the nature reserve “Grodnenskaya Pushcha” (Belarus) have been carried out. A linear relationship was found between the yield of V. vitis-idaea shoots (air-dry weight) and the projective cover r = 0,85; productivity (g/m 2) = –3,03253 + 1,79386* projective cover (%), (r 2 = 0,73)). The mode of illumination, moisture, and soil acidity affects the resource-cenotic parameters of V. vitis-idaea quite strongly (η 2 ± mn 2 = 51,3 ± 8,3 – 99,8 ± 0,1%). However, the linear dependence of the parameters on the factors was either not revealed or low (up to r = 0,38). This indicates a non-linear relationship (k > 4,0) of the studied parameters of V. vitis-idaea with abiotic environmental factors, which is formed under conditions of interspecific competition and ecological mosaicism of phytocoenoses. A positive relationship was recorded at low values of the projective cover between the blueberry V. myrtillus L. (up to 20%) and V. vitis-idaea (up to 5%), which indicates a positive relationship of these species in the phytocoenosis with their low abundance.

This paper presents the results of study on heavy metals in soil and in herbaceous plants in selected pine forests in Słowiński National Park. The heavy metals, such as Zn, Cu, Mn and Fe were studied. Concentrations of zinc in tested soil are strongly and very strongly related to manganese and copper content (r = 0.57 do r = 0.98, p < 0.05). Moreover, the soil moistening has vital impact on copper content in the plants of the ground cover. It was also found that moss in comparison to other forest plants captures higher volume of zinc and copper. The content of the above mentioned metals in the plants of dry coniferous forests (Bs), fresh coniferous forests (Bśw) and humid coniferous forests (Bw) of the ground cover constitute the following decreasing series: Mn(438.1) > Fe(98.6) > Zn(35.2) > Cu(3.5).

This paper presents the edge effect of a very low-volume road on the belt of roadside vegetation in the “Puszcza Notecka”, Poland - one of the largest compact forest complexes in Europe. The observations were carried out in the vicinity of pine stands in the fresh coniferous forest and fresh mixed coniferous forest sites. Twelve rectangular experimental sites 30 and 50 meters wide at a distance of 0 to 10 meters from the edge surfaces were established. 75 species characteristic for the 13 phytosociological classes and 20 species associated devoided of the diagnostic value were recognized in the roadside area. Native species dominated, where the most numerous species belonged to meadow communities (Molinio-Arrhenatheretea) and ruderal (Artemisietea vulgaris). Despite the significant participation of synanthropic plants, there was no invasion of alien species.
