Opis:
Strawberry is a species sensitive to water shortages, especially during fruit growth and ripening. One method of limiting water loss in plant production involves the use of antitranspirants, which reduce plant transpiration. One method of limiting water loss in plant production involves the use of antitranspirants, which reduce plant transpiration. One of substances used for this purpose is, amongst others, natural terpene polymer di-1-p-menthene (pinolene). Research on the influence of a pinolene-containing antitranspirant (with the commercial name of Vapor Gard) on gas exchange parameters (intensity of net CO2 assimilation, intensity of transpiration, stomatal conductance for water, substomatal CO2 concentration), the water balance and the content of assimilation pigments (chlorophyll “a”, “b”, total chlorophyll, carotenoids) in the leaves of the cv. ‘Salsa’ strawberry was conducted in the years 2009–2010. The antitranspirant was used once at a concentration of 0.75% before flowering. The measurements were performed four times: before flowering (1st measurement date), when the plants were in full flowering (2nd measurement date), in the middle of the harvest season (3rd measurement date) and after the end of the harvest season (4th measurement date). Foliar application of the Vapor Gard antitranspirant decreases the intensity of strawberry transpiration without changing the CO2 assimilation activity. Plants sprayed with the tested preparation were characterised by a higher relative water content (RWC) in leaves and a higher value of the photosynthetic index of water use efficiency (WUE). The antitranspirant did not influence the content of assimilation pigments in straw-berry leaves. The values of the determined physiological features depended on the measurement date (developmental stage) of the tested strawberry cultivar.

Opis:
The induction of polyploidy using mutagenic chemicals is one of the plant breeding methods to enhance the production of secondary metabolites. In the current research, to induce polyploidy in lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) plants, seeds were treated with different concentrations of colchicine for various exposure times. A factorial experiment was performed using a randomized complete block design with two factors: colchicine concentrations with four levels (control, 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2%) and exposure times with three levels (24, 48, and 72 h) and three replicates. The physiological and phytochemical traits of plants were measured at a 4–6 leave stage. The results indicated that different concentrations of colchicine had a significant effect on the chlorophyll a (Chl.a), chlorophyll b (Chl.b), carotenoid, phenol, flavonoid, and rosmarinic acid contents. The exposure times of colchicine also caused significant changes in Chl.a, Chl.b, carotenoid, phenol, flavonoid, and rosmarinic acid amounts (P # 0.01). Increasing the colchicine concentration significantly increased the physiological and phytochemical traits at 0.05% and 0.1% concentration in comparison to the control (P # 0.01). In contrast, the interaction of colchicine concentration and exposure time had a significant effect on Chl.a, Chl.b, carotenoid, and rosmarinic acid amounts. The findings of this study indicate that one of the effective methods in primary screening of polyploidy plants in the polyploidization breeding program is the estimation of the physiological changes, the contents of chlorophyll a and b, and the total amount of chlorophyll and secondary metabolites. Flow cytometry is recommended to be used for the accurate identification of the ploidy level in M. officinalis.

Opis:
Some morphological and physiological traits of seedlings in eight quince populations from seeds obtained in 2015 (350 progenies per population) were evaluated in 2017 and 2018. They resulted from open pollination of ‘Viduja’, KVD2 and KVD4 genotypes as well as from the crossings of ‘Viduja’ × KVD4, KVD2 × ‘Viduja’, KVD2 × KVD4, KVD4 × ‘Viduja’ and KVD4 × KVD2. Populations showed significant differences in some measured traits, including height and diameter of seedlings, canopy width, annual growth, leaf iron, and chlorophyll content, as well as catalase and peroxidase activities. Based on the results of descriptive statistics, a high variation coefficient was observed in canopy width, peroxidase activity, chlorophyll, and iron content traits. Results of simple correlation showed that there were significant positive correlations between leaf iron content and catalase activity as well as canopy width with both annual growth and leaf length. Cluster analysis among populations based on total traits divided the populations into four distinct groups. The role of the female parents was visible in reciprocal crosses of ‘Viduja’ × KVD4 and KVD2 × KVD4, but all populations with similar female parents were not grouped in the same clusters.

Opis:
Propagation conditions of bedding plants can eliminate or reduce the possibility of AMF inoculation of the root system during greenhouse production. Due to the ability of AMF to increase plant growth the effects of AMF and CO₂ enrichment on rooting and some physiological traits of geranium and osteospermum cuttings were investigated. AMF and CO₂ enrichment increased leaf number and fresh and dry weights of osteospermum shoots. Mycorrhization also significantly increased the length and fresh and dry weights of osteospermum roots formed in CO₂ enriched atmosphere but it did not affect root system developed in ambient atmosphere. AMF increased the length and fresh weight of geranium roots, irrespectively of CO₂ concentration, and dry weight of roots in CO₂ enriched atmosphere. Transpiration and stomatal conductance values were higher in inoculated osteospermum at higher CO₂ concentration. Mycorrhization and CO₂ enrichment increased photosynthetic activity of garden geranium leaves and this effect was connected with the increased ratio of variable to maximum chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm).
Transpiracja i przewodnictwo szparkowe były większe u inokulowanych sadzonek osteospermum niż u nieinokulowanych w większym stężeniu CO₂. Mikoryzacja i dokarmianie CO₂ powodowały wzrost intensywności fotosyntezy u pelargonii, co było związane ze wzrostem stosunku zmiennej do maksymalnej fluorescencji chlorofilu (Fv/Fm).

Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.), a member of Lamiaceae family, is an important medicinal plant that has many useful properties. Copper is an essential micronutrient for normal plant growth and metabolism. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of copper sulphate and copper nanoparticles on morpho-physiological traits and essential oil composition of peppermint. Seven treatments of copper sulphate and copper nanoparticles in three concentrations (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 g/l) and control were applied in foliar application three times of the interval of 15 days up to flowering stages of peppermint in Karaj, Iran in 2015. Copper nanoparticles (1.0 g/l) increased chlorophyll content and essential oil percentage of 35% and 20% higher than control, respectively. The copper sulfate (0.5 g/l) increased dry matter yield up to 58% higher than control. The effects of treatments were significant on 17 out of 34 compositions. Copper nanoparticles (1.0 g/l) increased menthol, menthone and menthofuran content up to 15, 25 and 65% higher than in control, respectively. Foliar application of copper sulfate (0.5 g/l) and copper nanoparticles (1.0 g/l) in flowering stage were suggested for increase of dry matter production, essential oil content and composition, respectively.
Siarczan miedzi i nanocząstki miedzi podawano dolistnie trzykrotnie w odstępie 15 dni aż do fazy kwitnienia. Hodowano także grupę kontrolną w trzech stężeniach (0,5, 1,0 i 1,5 g/l). Badanie przeprowadzono w Karaj w Iranie. Nanocząstki miedzi (1,0 g/l) spowodowały wzrost zawartości chlorofilu i olejku eterycznego (w %), odpowiednio o 35 i 20% w stosunku do grupy kontrolnej. Siarczan miedzi (0,5 g/l) zwiększał suchą masę surowca o 58% w porównaniu z grupą kontrolną. Wpływ nawożenia był istotny statystycznie w przypadku 17 związków spośród 34 składników olejku. Nanocząstki miedzi (1,0 g/l) zwiększyły zawartość mentolu, mentonu i mentofuranu odpowiednio do 15, 25 i 65% w porównaniu z grupą kontrolną. Podanie dolistne siarczanu miedzi (0,5 g/l) i nanocząstek miedzi (1,0 g/l) w stadium kwitnienia może powodować zwiększenie produkcji suchej masy surowca oraz wpływać na zawartość i skład olejku eterycznego.

Opis:
In order to evaluate the yield, yield components and some physiological and qualitative traits of corn treated with nitrogen fertilizers (biological, chemical and integrated), a field experiment was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station of Khorramabad during 2016 growing season. Treatments were arranged in a complete randomized block design with four replications. Experimental treatments consisted of 100% chemical fertilizer (urea), bio-fertilizer (nitroxin), integration of bio-fertilizer + 25% chemical fertilizer, integration of bio-fertilizer + 50% chemical fertilizer, integration of bio-fertilizer + 75% chemical fertilizer and the control. Results showed that the effect of different treatments of fertilizers on all measured traits, except for number of rows in each ear and carotenoids, was significant. The results indicated that integration of bio-fertilizer + 75% chemical fertilizer affected the highest grain yield (9.31 t ha–1), dry biological yield (20.96 t ha–1), number of kernels in each row (41.67), plant height (201.02 cm), hectoliter weight (0.82 g cm–3), chlorophyll b (0.43 mg g–1 FW), total chlorophyll (1.1 mg g–1 FW) and leaf area index (LAI) (4) and there was no significant difference among this treatment and 100% chemical fertilizer (N) and integration of bio-fertilizer + 50% chemical fertilizer treatments in all measured traits. The greatest harvest index (45.8) and grain protein-content (9.1%) resulted from the integration of biofertilizer + 50% chemical fertilizer treatment. Also the highest 1000-grains weight (281.13 g) and chlorophyll a (0.66 mg g–1 FW) were caused by 100% chemical fertilizer (urea) treatments. Results showed that integration of bio-fertilizer + chemical fertilizer could be considered as a means to reduce the consumption of chemical fertilizers for sustainable agriculture.

Opis:
The genus Fragaria belongs to the Rosaceae family. The most popular representatives of this species are the strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) and wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca L.), whose taste and health benefits are appreciated by a huge number of consumers. The cultivation of Fragaria plants is widespread around the world, with particular emphasis on the temperate climate zone. Increasingly occurring weather anomalies, including drought phenomena, cause immense losses in crop cultivation. The Fragaria plant species are very sensitive to drought, due to the shallow root system, large leaf area and the high water content of the fruit. There have been many studies on the influence of water deficit on the morphological, biochemical and physiological features of strawberries and wild strawberries. There is a lack of research summarizing the current state of knowledge regarding of specific species response to water stress. The aim of this study was to combine and compare data from many research carried out and indicate the direction of future research aimed at improving the resistance of Fragaria plants species to stress related to drought. These plants show patterns of response to stress caused by drought, such as: osmotic adjustment, reduction of transpiration and photosynthesis, and increased efficiency of water use. Drought also causes significant changes in the composition and palatability of the fruit of the Fragaria plant species.

Opis:
Salinity is one of the most significant abiotic stress factors influencing crop production, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Plants’ response to salinity stress depends on the cultivated genotype. A pot experiment was conducted to study the impact of two concentrations of sodium chloride (4 and 6 dS∙m-1) on some physiological and production traits of 58 chickpea genotypes. A genetic variation in the response of the investigated chickpea genotypes for NaCl-induced salinity stress was noted. Studied morphophysiological traits and yield components were affected under salt stress in all genotypes tested. Plant height was observed to have the lowest rate of reduction (32%, 48%) at 4 and 6 dS∙m-1, respectively. Leaf stomatal conductance decreased as salinity increased. Salinity stress conditions affected all studied yield components, but there was a genetic variation in the response of the studied genotypes. Under no stress conditions and compared to the other genotypes, the number of pods was significantly higher in BG362 genotype. The seed number was significantly higher in ILC9076 genotype. The 100 seed weight was significantly higher in the genotype ILC2664. The mean seed yield was significantly higher in ILC9354 and the harvest index was significantly higher in ILC8617. In general, salinity stress caused the reduction of all parameters. We assume that the assessment of tolerance of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) genotypes to salinity stress should be based on a complex of morpho-physiological traits and analysis of yield complement.
