Opis:
Physiological parameters analysis allows for a precise quantification of energy expenditure of transfemoral amputees with different prosthetic knees. Comparative physiological parameters analysis that indicate the functional characteristics of knee joints is essential to the choice of transfemoral amputee. The aim of this study was to propose a microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knee (i-KNEE) and conducted physiological parameters (energy cost, gait efficiency and relative exercise intensity) comparison of transfemoral amputees with C-leg, Rheo Knee and Mauch under different walking speeds. Methodsː A microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knee with hydraulic damper (i-KNEE) was developed. A two-factor repeated measurement experiment design was used. Each subject was instructed to accept the same treatments. The two factors were type of prosthetic knees (the i-KNEE, the C-Leg, the Rheo Knee and the Mauch) and speed (0.5, 0.7, 0.9, 1.1, 1.3 m/s). The energy cost, gait efficiency and relative exercise intensity of ten transfemoral amputees were measured. Resultsː For all the prosthetic knees, the energy cost increased along with walking speed. There was no significant difference between three microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knees in energy cost. The gait efficiency of Mauch was always less than or equal to other three microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knees in specific walking speed. The relative exercise intensity increased with speed for all the prosthetic knees. More effort was needed for the transfemoral amputees with Mauch than other three microprocessorcontrolled prosthetic knees in the same walking speed. Conclusionsː The use of the microprocessor-controlled knee joints resulted in reduced energy cost, improved gait efficiency and smaller relative exercise intensity.

Opis:
The work presents the research and analysis of the influence of low temperatures on selected physiological parameters of a human being. The research was conducted in the 20th Military Healing and Rehabilitation Hospital SPZOZ in Krynica-Zdrój, Poland. Systematic cryotherapy is a procedure during which the whole body, including the head, is exposed to very low temperature (about - 110°C) in a short time (no more than 3 min). The procedure is of a stressful nature; the exposure of almost naked body to a temperature not met in human natural environment causes a sudden mobilization of all the organism defence forces which is used in treatment, sport training and biological renewal. The reaction to extreme cold takes form of a short contraction which is followed by long-lasting - a few hours - dilatation of skin blood vessels. It is accompanied by analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect, relaxation of bronchi muscles, tendency to decrease oedemas and exudates, increase in immunity and mood, including even the euphoria feeling. The research included 20 people after having signed the agreement and excluding any contraindications. The research was carried on following the criteria of the estimate of research reliability according to Jadad randomisation. Every day, during 14 weekdays, after and before the procedure (3 min stay in a cryochamber, t = - 110°C) the measurement of selected parameters were taken, such as: systolic and diastolic pressure, pulse, temperature in aural canal, body mass, fatty tissue and changes of outer body temperatures (thermo-vision analysis). On the basis of the results and conducted analysis one can state that systemic cryotherapy causes the following changes: statistically significant increase of systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, fatty tissue, significant drop of pulse, deep temperature in aural canal and outer body temperature in analysed thermograms. The results were developed statistically using standard methods in accordance with algorithms of statistical inference. The aim of the work is the research on how a short-term exposure to cold changes the outside temperature of the front of a body, and answer to the question if the limb heat - the left and right side - reacts to heat identically. The work introduces biophysical research of the influence of low temperatures on thermodynamic changes in a human being. The results presented are not often met in specialist literature.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pre-sowing seeds treatments on some agro-physiological parameters of sugar beets. The selected seeds treatments were: laser stimulation, hydropriming and combination of hydropriming and laser radiation. The impact of the seeds stimulation was analysed by determining the acid phosphatase activity, concentration of phosphate and photosynthetic pigments in leaves as well as nutrient status and some yield parameters of the roots. The plants were assayed four times during vegetation period. Experiment shown that different priming methods had relatively small effect on both the level of orthophosphate and total phosphorus concentration. On the other hand, the plants raised from seeds both hydro- and laser-primed remained more stable level of phosphate during whole vegetative season than remaining plants. The highest activity of acid phosphatase was observed in the younger plants and amongst different seed treatments, plants grown from non-primed seeds and laser primed seeds showed the highest enzyme activity. In the later stages of growth the activity considerably lowered. Considering the effect of different seeds treatments it was observed a significant increase in enzyme activity in plants emerged from the hydroprimed or laser stimulated seeds as well as an increment of chlorophylls in plants emerged from the hydroprimed seeds and both hydro- and laser primed ones. Seeds stimulation had a positive effect on the potassium content particularly in leaves of sugar beet and on some yield parameters of the roots. Concluding, it can be stated that the effect of pre-sowing seed stimulation (priming) was visible during the entire growing season and amongst the examined methods of seeds treatment, hydropriming sole or in a combination with laser radiation caused the highest alterations in assayed parameters.

Opis:
A pot experiment was conducted to examine whether the morphological and physiological characteristics of some halophytes may be affected by salt stress. For this purpose, a factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design was carried out with three replications. The treatments were some halophytes (Salicornia europaea, Atriplex leucoclada, and Kochia scoparia) and salinity stress levels [Electrical conductivity 0 (Hoagland’s solution), Hoagland’s solution consisting of 100, 200, 300 and 500 mM NaCl]. Among the halophytes tested, Salicornia europaea had significantly higher shoot and root of dry matters compared to the other halophytes in all salt treatments. Salinity stress resulted in an increase in photosynthetic pigments up to 200 mM and thereafter, it decreased in all of the studied plants. Photosynthetic pigments, ranked in a descending order, were high in Kochia scoparia, Salicornia europaea, and Atriplex leucoclada. In addition, salinity stress led to an enhancement in malondialdehyde (MDA) and H2O2. The tolerance of Salicornia europaea under high salinity stress was associated with low MDA and H2O2 contents as well as high contents of photosynthetic pigments. The shoot and root Na+ increased considerably by augmenting the salinity levels in all halophytic plants; however, there was a significant difference among halophytes at higher salinity levels. The shoot K+ decreased by increasing the salinity levels, but K+ partitioning pattern varied among the halophytes. Under saline conditions, the shoot and root Na+/K+ ratio of all halophytes grew. The highest and the lowest of Na+ were observed in Salicornia europaea and Kochia scoparia, respectively. Thus, the Na+/K+ ratio could be considered as an indicator of salt evaluation. Nitrogen, protein content, dry matter digestibility (DMD), and metabolizable energy (ME) were high in Salicornia europaea plants in comparison to other plants at 200–500 mM salinity levels; in contrast, acid detergent fiber (ADF) and netural detergent fiber (NDF) were low. According to the results of this study, the tolerance of halophytes towards NaCl is possibly due to the differences in damage from reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially H2O2, and toxicity to metabolism Na+.

Opis:
The aim of this paper was to evaluate the scope of influence a modified circuit training of endurance and strength character, carried out in line with an original programme, on the selected physiological parameters. 30 volunteers who train in fitness clubs in Kraków on an everyday basis were selected by means of purposeful selection to participate in the research. This group was divided into two subgroups. One of them used an experimental programme of circuit training, the other took part in the same training programmes they had used so far. After six weeks the two groups were subjected to research. Heart rate and blood lactate levels were measured. Heart rate monitors were used to measure heart rate. Research results show that the proposed training programme is carried out at a high intensity level, which is indicated by the recorded heart rate and blood lactate levels. The research programme carried out with the use of the circuit training positively influences fundamental physiological parameters; average and maximal heart rate frequency were lowered, energy expenditure in the course of the training was lowered; blood lactate levels after the training were reduced as well and post-exercise restitution was increased. The proposed form of training can be an example of physical activity of significant health-oriented advantages.

Opis:
Proper planning of the training process based on individual LT and AT metabolic thresholds is essential to improve athletic performance. Development of endurance in soccer players is mainly based on continuous runs and variable-intensity runs, supplemented with strength conditioning and sport-specific training. The aim of the study was to analyse selected parameters of physical capacity of soccer players after 8-week variable-intensity running training and circuit training. The experiment was carried out in a group of 34 soccer players aged 21 to 26 years. The athletes were divided into two groups: 17 people in the experimental group and 17 people in the control group. The experimental group was involved in 30-minute tempo runs two times a week for 8 weeks with variable intensity at AT. In the same period, the control group performed two 60-minute continuous runs at the intensity of 70-75%HRmax. The determination of metabolic thresholds used two indirect tests: the multistage shuttle run test (beep test) and maximal lactate steady state test (MLSS) with author's own modification. In order to evaluate maximal heart rate (HRmax), the research procedure was started from the beep test (distance: 20 m). The speed at the first level was 8.5 km/h and increased with each level by 0.5 km/h. Training of the experimental group where variable exercise intensity was used caused a statistically significant increase in HRmax (by 1.9%) and blood lactate levels at the AT (by 20.5%). The training in the experimental group led to the statistically significant (p < 0.05) increase in the parameters of the following variables: HRmax (by 1.9%); lactate level (by 7.85); HR at the AT (by 1,9%); lactate level at the AT (by 20.5%). The assumptions of the experimental training did not cause statistically significant changes in pretest vs. posttest HRmax and blood lactate levels for the LT. Endurance training with high intensity is more effective in soccer players compared to training with moderate intensity. Development of special endurance in soccer should also assume the intensity and method of working similar to the method used during sport competition.

The study is focused on the effect of a short-term general 3.5 Hz frequency vibration on physiological parameters in athletes. The study used a vibration platform designed for the requirements of the experiment, generating harmonic vibration with the frequency of a human run-3.5 Hz, and the amplitude increased from 4 to 5 millimeters. The study assumed that free standing on the platform with no other physical exercises is an exercise for the human organism and that a vibration platform is a device that reproduces mechanical stimuli associated with running or a vigorous march.

The goal of this study is to determine the crop water stress index (CWSI) and irrigation scheduling based on CWSI values, as well as to examine the correlations between CWSI, physiological parameters and grain yield of hybrid corn P31A34 in semi-arid climate conditions. In 2014 and 2015, the upper limit (UL) temperatures at which plants were entirely exposed to water stress were 1.178°C and 2.38°C, respectively. When the corn grain yield began to decline, the CWSI threshold value was 0.34, indicating the yield limit. Grain yield, crop water consumption, crop water stress index, chlorophyll content, water use efficiency and leaf area index were found to have negative correlations (p ≤ 0.01) with CWSI values in both years of the study. The findings revealed that in semi-arid climate conditions, a maximum of 30% water deficit could be used during the growing period of the corn compared to full irrigation (I100) for water savings and that a water deficit greater than 30% results in considerable grain yield losses. In areas with limited water resources, the moderate water deficit (I70) may be a viable alternative to the I100.

Doświadczenie prowadzono w kamerach fitotronowych. Jedna kamera fitotronowa była wyposażona w lampy metalohalogenkowe (MH) o rozkładzie emisji zoptymalizowanym do procesu fotosyntezy, druga kamera wyposażona była w wysokoprężne lampy sodowe (WLS) standardowe wyposażenie kamery fitotronowej. Badano parametry wymiany gazowej roślin i zawartość chlorofilu w liściach oraz zawartość suchej masy liści pomidora. Rośliny naświetlane lampami WLS charakteryzowały się wyższą intensywnością fotosyntezy niż naświetlane lampami MH. Wskaźniki wymiany gazowej roślin takie jak intensywność transpiracji, przewodność szparkowa i wydajność kwantowa były wyższe u roślin naświetlanych lampami MH niż WLS. Naświetlanie lampami MH wpłynęło na większą kumulację chlorofilu w liściach pomidora. Istotnie więcej suchej masy miały liście pomidora spod lamp WLS niż lamp MH.
The effect of the type of light source on selected physiological parameters of tomato plants. For the study there was taken two cultivars of greenhouse tomato: 'Admiro' F1 - mediumsized fruit and 'Starbuck' F1 - large size fruit. The experiment was conducted in two phytotron growth chambers. One of them was equipped with metal-halide lamps (MH) which the distribution of emissions was optimized for photosynthesis, a second one was equipped with a sodium lamps (HPS) as standard equipment of phytotron chamber. Gas exchange parameters of plants and chlorophyll and dry matter content in tomato leaves were studied. HPS lamps lighted plants were characterized by a higher rate of photosynthesis than MH lamps lighted. Indicators of plant gas exchange such as the intensity of transpiration, stomatal conductance and quantum yield were high er in plants exposed on MH light than under HPS lamps. MH lamps irradiation resulted in a greater accumulation of chlorophyll in the leaves of tomato. Significantly more dry matter was in tomato leaves under HPS lamps than under MH.

Opis:
Background. Pharmacological correction of a high-fat diet is of great interest to prevent the development of obesity and hypertension. More and more research is being done on the preventive use of medicinal herbs for excess caloric intake. Objective. The aim of this study was to determine the general physiological effect of I. helenium rhizomes and M. chamomilla inflorescences used in the diet of male rats consuming excess amounts of fat and calories in the daily diet. Material and methods. In a 30-day experiment, we determined the effect of I. helenium rhizome and M. chamomilla on the physiological activity and metabolic processes of laboratory rats consuming a high-fat diet. The physical activity was evaluated according to the mass gain of animals and change in the relative mass of the internal organs, and also the functional conditions of the central nervous system. The influence on the metabolic processes was revealed by biochemical and clinical blood analyses. Results. In a laboratory experiment on male rats, it was found that the addition of dry crushed rhizomes of Inula helenium L. and inflorescences of Matricaria chamomilla L. to the diet caused opposite changes in body weight. In the control group, the animals slightly increased their body weight (up to 111.5% of the initial weight by the end of the experiment); the rhizomes of I. helenium caused a decrease in body weight gain (up to 105.5% on the 30th day of the experiment compared to the initial weight); rats fed M. chamomilla inflorescences gained 123.2% of their initial body weight during the month of the experiment. The rhizomes of I. helenium caused an increase in the stomach relative mass. A decrease in the thymus relative weight was observed when animals were fed M. chamomilla inflorescences. The rhizomes of I. helenium stimulated an increase of blood protein concentration (mainly due to globulins), an increase in the alkaline phosphatase activity and cholesterol, and a decrease in the triglycerides concentration. M. chamomilla inflorescences reduced the blood urea concentration and increased the activity of alkaline phosphatase, causing strong changes in fat metabolism. Under the influence of the diet with the addition of M. chamomilla inflorescences, the atherogenic index increased in animals by 6.5 times relatively to the control group (due to a decrease in the concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and an increase in the concentration of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, an increase in the total cholesterol concentration). When M. chamomilla was added to the diet, the blood triglycerides concentration in animals decreased sharply and the concentration of leukocytes increased. The concentration of monocytes exceeded the limits of the physiological norm both in the control group and in the group of animals fed on M. chamomilla inflorescences. Conclusions. The results of the studies show the promise for further research of I. helenium rhizomes in the prevention of hypertension and also indicate strong risks when using M. chamomilla inflorescences for preventive purposes during high-fat and hypercaloric diet.

Opis:
This study aimed at evaluating the physiological activity of common bean grown under the conditions of stress being induced by salinity and nitrogen deficiency and its lack in substrate. Three series of two-factorial hydroponic experiment with the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivar Basta were carried out from May to July in 2013–2014. The first experimental factor was three levels of nitrogen content in a Hoagland hydroponic medium (level 1 – a complete medium, level 2 – without 50% N, level 3 – without 100% N). The second experimental factor was three levels of medium salinity (level 1 – no NaCl addition, level 2 – 30 mM NaCl addition, level 3 – 50 mM NaCl addition). Nitrogen deficiency in a Hoagland hydroponic medium, together with increased salinity level, significantly affected the changes in the physiological parameters of the common bean cultivar Basta being tested, i.e. assimilation pigment concentration (chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b and chlorophyll-a+b and carotenoids), assimilation and transpiration intensities, and RWC (relative water content). The 50% nitrogen deficiency in medium induced a significant increase in the concentration of all assimilation pigments in common bean leaves and was by far the highest among the experimental variants being tested. A significant decrease in the content of assimilation pigments was observed in the hydroponic mediums without nitrogen and salined with 30 and 50 mM sodium chloride. The interaction of these two experimental factors being analysed, i.e. nitrogen deficiency and its lack in a Hoagland hydroponic medium and its salinity, significantly decreased the intensity of assimilation in bean leaves, while a significant increase in transpiration was observed in the variant without nitrogen and with 50 mM NaCl. The experimental variants being tested had a significant effect on the changes in leaf water balance of the common bean cultivar being tested. Salinity, in interaction with nitrogen deficiency in medium, decreased relative water content (RWC) in leaves, irrespective of their level.

Opis:
The article deals with effect the use of organic (biohumus) and mineral (biochar) fertilizers based on the products of chicken vital activity on changing the fertility of technogenic sod-podzolic soils exposed to constant and unstable magnetic fields. The germination and growth dynamics of grasses and onions were investigated. The rational rate of introduction of the studied fertilizers into the technogenic soil is determined. Running (RMF) and direct (DMF) magnetic fields were applied in two ways: with fertilizers added and without fertilizers added. It has been established that the effect of preliminary magnetization of technogenic soil has a significant effect on lawn grass germination and the length of onion feathers, which are more than twice the height when exposed to the RMF, as compared with DMF. The effect of RMF on grass germination was also twice as high for DMF, when fertilizers were added. The DMF magnetization and biohumus helps to increase the grass sprout height by 10–20%. Onion sprouts were higher in two cases: DMF and biohumus; RMF and biochar. The influence of the factor of fertilizer type has a significant effect in 30–40% of cases, whilst at a spread rate of more than 5%, significant chemical activity of biochar negatively affects the germination of both grass and onion.
