Opis:
It should be noted that there is currently a problem with wood resources in the woodworking industry. A potential, unused wood reserve is post-consumer wood (PCW). The problem with the quality of this wood resource has not been fully resolved since there is no regulatory database. In fact, there is a lack of appropriate regulatory documents, which makes it impossible to describe to a full extent the physical and mechanical properties of PCW of common wood species of different ages as a source of additional raw materials for various woodworking technologies. Proceeding from the goal, the task of the study is to describe the physical and mechanical properties of postconsumer wood using the example of fir wood, which for a long period of time has been used to create furniture and joinery products. The task is also to identify patterns of change in the indicators of this resource with age – an expired service life or suitability. In order to use PCW in woodworking and to fill the scientific base with physical and mechanical indicators of fir wood of different ages with an expired product service life, the following characteristics were investigated: static hardness, swelling, coefficients of swelling, the value of transverse anisotropy, density, static bending strength, splitting strength along the fibers, modulus of elasticity in compression, and the modulus of elasticity in static bending. The characteristics of PCW of the widespread fir species in the range of use from 0 to 20 years were explored, with intermediate control over the properties every 5 years. The dynamics of the physical and mechanical indicators of fir PCW were revealed and it was found that in the course of operation time in various conditions they change, mainly decreasingly: static hardness by 9.2-9.6%; the value of transverse anisotropy by 30-32%; strength: static bending strength by 3.4-7.95%, splitting strength by 4.49-8.67%; modulus of elasticity: in compression by 3.89-4.08%, in bending by 2.75-6.64%. The main causes of changes in the properties of PCW with age: natural: weathering, partial internal rot, insect damage, other biological effects; mechanical: splitting, scratches, small holes from means of fastening and other defects due to use; operational: the influence of power and dynamic loads, the influence of surface finishing agents and other factors on the structural elements of wood products. A summary table was compiled for the selection of indicators of the physical and mechanical properties of fir PCW of different ages. When knowing the indicators and dynamics of the physical and mechanical properties of PCW with age, it can be recommended for manufacturing structural materials – blockboards and furniture panels.

Opis:
The common juniper is a well−known arboreal plant with wide range of the occurrence and small habitat requirements. It is the most numerous coniferous shrub in Poland, sometimes taking shape of small tree. There is no sufficient data about the anatomy as well as physical and mechanical properties of common juniper wood in available literature. Hence, the objectives of this paper were to supplement the knowledge about the properties and anatomy of the juniper wood. The nine trunks of the common juniper of column shape were harvested to this investigation. These small trees with height up to 5 meters were 34−38 years−old. They grew on postagricultural area on brown podzol (common sand) in Łomża Forest District (E Poland). It is a sunny area on the rim of subcontinental fresh coniferous forest – one of the typical and favourable habitat for the common juniper in Poland. We analysed the microstructural elements of common juniper wood. The main component of the microstructure are short (average length 2.5 mm) and thin−walled tracheids (wall thickness from 2.4 µm in traheids of spring wood to 4.2 µm in tracheids of summer wood). Domination of this type of microstructural elements has influence on physical and mechanical properties of wood. Investigated wood characterised with low coefficient of shrinkage. The volumetric coefficient of shrinkage is 10.2%, so the wood has not tendency to crack and distort. The common juniper wood has slightly higher density (562 kg/m3 in air−dry state) than Scots pine wood and similar hardness, shear strength (91 MPa), static bending strength (85 MPa) and compression strength parallel to grain (49 MPa). The latter is directly proportional to density of the wood. The other mechanical properties of common juniper wood: modulus of elasticity and tension strength parallel to grain are significantly lower than for Scots pine wood. It is the influence of wood microstructure, not rectilinear arrangement of cell in wood and significant content of juvenile wood. Considering these aspects and modes dimensions of common juniper raw material, the potential use are different including small wooden articles especially kitchen accessories.

Opis:
Triplochiton scleroxylon K. Schum, commonly named ayous in Cameroon, is a tree typical of secondary forests in subtropical areas mainly below 500 msl, characterized by an uneven distribution of annual rainfall and the presence of disturbance. This species is widely used in the origin area, and the interest of European markets for ayous wood has steadily increased in the last decades. Despite the interest, only a few studies explored the characterization of this wood for its Cameroonian provenience. This study was carried out to provide a general overview of the available information and to determine some selected physical and mechanical properties of ayous wood coming from the department of Boumba et Ngoko in South-east Cameroon. Physical and mechanical properties and colourimetric parameters of ayous wood were determined following the UNI EN and ISO standards to characterize this wood and to compare with the data from literature. Density, 393 kg/m3, resulted consistent with the data reported in the literature; the basic density was lower than those reported in the literature and the difference could be related to wood porosity; volumetric shrinkage was among the lower ones detected by other authors. Colourimetric parameters describing the undifferentiated creamy-yellow colour of the wood were L* 73.08, a* 7.39, b* 27.88. Mechanical properties were in the wide range of data reported by other authors; compression strength 36.6 MPa, static bending strength 61.1 MPa and Brinell hardness 12.2 N/mm2. These results extend our knowledge on the physical, colorimetric and mechanical properties of the ayous wood. These results can be helpful to highlight differences in the physical and mechanical properties due to the influence of origin on wood physical and mechanical properties. Future studies on this topic are needed to better understand the changes in properties and the characterization of the Cameroonian provenance. The results on the properties of ayous wood give an account of the real possibilities of treatments and technologies that can improve the technological characteristics and the environmentally sustainable use of this resource for the origin and importing countries.

Opis:
Seedlings of Paulownia (Paulownia sp.) has increasingly appeared in the merchant offers in Poland. However, the knowledge of the technical characteristics of its wood is still insufficient because comprehensive studies of wood properties for this species have not been performed. The main aim of this study was to determine the selected physical and mechanical properties of Paulownia COTE−2 wood. The wood comes from the plantation of Paulownia COTE−2 located in Granada region in Spain. The investigation were carried on 162 samples, according to Polish standards. We analysed the following physical properties: air−dry density, oven−dry density, basic density, proportion of wood substance, wood porosity, total shrinkage of wood in longitudinal, tangential and radial anatomical directions, volumetric shrinkage, coefficients of each of mentioned shrinkage, the anisotropy index of shrinkage and mechanical properties: compression strength, static bending, modulus of elasticity in static bending, including the coefficients of the mechanical properties mentioned before. The results show that Paulownia wood is very light, with the density of 270 kg/m3 and low shrinking (volumetric shrinkage equaled to 7%). The mechanical properties of Paulownia wood are closely related to its density. Static bending equaled to 38 MPa and compression strength parallel to grain amounted to 24 MPa.
