W artykule omówiono genezę konfliktu japońsko-amerykańskiego oraz atak na Pearl Harbor w dniu 7 grudnia 1941 roku. W wyniku natarcia Amerykanie stracili osiem pancerników, sześć okrętów oraz około 200 samolotów, zginęło 2403 żołnierzy i cywilów, rannych zostało 1708 osób. O godzinie 9.45 admirał Nagumo wysłał do Tokio depeszę ze słowami: „Tora! Tora! Tora!”, co oznaczało, że misja zakończyła się sukcesem.

The Japanese strike against the naval base at Pearl Harbor (7 December 1941) exerted an enormous impact on shaping the image of this tragic event and cultivating its memory, and more broadly - on subsequent wartime operations in the Pacific. The famous address delivered by the President to the nation about the treachery and deception of the attack, broadcast on the radio and widely proclaimed in the media, put millions of Americans in a state of readiness, while the call: “Remember Pearl Harbor!” became part of wartime patriotic circulation.From the very onset, the attack against Pearl Harbor was accompanied by a sui generis contradiction in creating knowledge and memory. It denoted a tragic day for the United States, which due to the “treacherous” Japanese attack suffered great losses but, at the same time, it was remembered and commemorated as a day of the heroic stand of the American soldiers. The sacrifice made by the defenders of Pearl Harbor was venerated, mainly due to the efforts made by the veterans and their families, in the form of the USS Arizona Memorial (Pearl Harbor, 1962), which from the very beginning became a special site for successive generations of Americans paying their respect to their fallen countrymen.From the 1990s, i.e. half a century later, Pearl Harbor became for the next generations an important and visible cultural icon, restored in its full glory by historians, journalists, and the media (films, TV programs, the Internet, etc.). In time, all memories associated with the attack became a valuable material culture artefact imparted to museums and exhibitions, and in this way rendering durable the image and memory of the event and American participation in World War II.

With the Federation of Australia, aspiration for racial homogeneity was firmly established as being fundamental to national identity. Therefore, increasing criticism was directed against Asian employment in the pearl-shelling industry of Broome. It was not least against the backdrop of population politics, that several efforts were implemented to disestablish the purportedly ‘multiracial enclave’ in ‘White Australia.’ These culminated in “the white experiment,” i.e. the introduction of a dozen British men to evince European fitness as pearl divers and initiate the replacement of Asian pearling crews. Embedded in these endeavours were reflections of broader discourses on ‘white supremacy’ and racist discrimination.

Platforma PEARL to system dostosowany do potrzeb portów morskich, który pozwala na integrację danych satelitarnych oraz naziemnych w celu jak najlepszego zarządzania środowiskiem portowym. Dane satelitarne uzupełnione informacjami pozyskanymi z pomiarów insitu, dotyczącymi: jakości wody i powietrza, jakości osadów, prądów morskich, prędkości i kierunku rozchodzenia się fal morskich, zostały wykorzystane między innymi do monitorowania: pól wiatrów, plam ropy, prądów morskich, temperatury powierzchniowej wody, ruchu statków. Dostęp do danych naziemnych został zapewniony przez porty. Wybór danych satelitarnych był uwarunkowany możliwościami ich wykorzystania, a także związany z indywidualnymi potrzebami użytkowników. Platforma jest gotowa do implementacji. Jej działanie zostało sprawdzone w trzech europejskich portach w Barcelonie (Hiszpania), Southampton (Wielka Brytania) oraz Tallinie (Estonia).
The PEARL system is a tailor-made platform based on a modular structure which provides an Environmental Management System for Port Authorities that allows the incorporation of future data sources (new in-situ sensors, future space missions, etc) as they become available. The EO data are used to monitor physical parameters related to the Port environment, such as sea surface winds, coastal swell fields, oil spills, currents, ship traffic, sea surface temperature, and can be integrated to complement in-situ sensors in the same port area. The selection of the EO data was made taking into account the end-users’ environmental needs and the EO data limitations. Each port gave access to their in-situ sensors to provide data for integration with EO information. The selected in-situ sensors measured: air and water quality, turbidity, sediment quality currents, wave speed and direction.The paper gives an overview on the system architecture, data selection and on the results of the PEARL platform validation. The platform is ready to use and was validated in three European ports: the ports of Barcelona, Southampton and Tallinn.

Atakowane były również lotniska, na których znajdowało się około 300 samolotów. Nie uległy zniszczeniu ogromne zbiorniki paliwa, znajdujące się w pobliżu miejsc cumowania okrętów.

Field experiments were separately conducted from June to November, in year 2012 at the Research Farm, University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Nigeria and at a Farm in Ibi, Nigeria, to evaluate the effects of intra-row spacing of pearl millet and cropping systems on growth and yields of soybean-pearl millet intercrop, as well as assessing the yield advantages of the intercropping system. The experiment was a 2 x 4 factorial combination of treatments, fitted in a randomized complete block design (RCBD), with four replications. The cropping systems constitute the soles and the intercrop, while the intra-row spacing of pearl millet into soybean were at 15 cm, 20 cm, 25 cm and 30 cm. Results of study showed that sowing pearl millet into soybean at the intra-row spacing of 30 cm produced the highest pearl millet yields of 4.7 t ha-1 and 4.9 t ha-1 respectively, at Makurdi and Ibi locations, as well as producing the highest soybean yields at both locations. In Makurdi, intercropping pearl millet with soybean significantly (P ≤ 0.05) decreased yield of pearl millet by 32.4 % and that of soybean by 29.4 % compared to sole cropping of the component crops, while at Ibi, intercrop yields of pearl millet and soybean were respectively reduced by 35.9 % and 30.0 % compared to their sole yields. Sowing pearl millet into soybean at the intra-row spacing of 30 cm also gave the highest total intercrop yields, highest land equivalent coefficient (LEC) values, highest land equivalent ratio (LER) values of 2.97 and 2.71 and highest percentage (%) land saved (66.3 % and 63.1 % respectively, recorded at Makurdi and Ibi locations). The implication of study showed that it is most advantageous having both crops in intercrop when pearl millet was sown into soybean at the intra-row spacing of 30 cm. This should therefore, be recommended for the southern guinea savanna, Nigeria.

This paper uses network-based efficiency measures to evaluate the efficiency implications of the evolution of the transport network in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) over the period 1988-2008. The network-based efficiency measures consider the relative ease of access between cities in terms of weighted relative travel cost. The results indicate that the spatial patterns of network efficiency are different from ‘core-periphery’ pattern derived from classical accessibility indicators. This implies that there are low network efficiency cities and high network efficiency cities in core and peripheral regions at the same time. In the first stage (1988-1998), the efficiency contour shows a ‘corridor’ pattern along the GuangShen traffic corridor between Guangzhou and Shenzhen in the eastern side of the Pearl estuary; in the following decade (1998-2008), with large-scale infrastructural developments, the spatial pattern has changed from a north-south corridor to an east-west contiguous distribution pattern. By 2008, the mean network efficiency value indicates that the efficiency levels within the PRD as a whole are tending towards optimal levels. We conclude by suggesting ways to promote the urban economic development based on the relationship between the network efficiency and per capita GDP.

The cropping systems (sole soybean, sole pearl millet and soybean-pearl millet intercrop) constituted the main plots, while the intra-row spacing of pearl millet (15 cm, 20 cm, 25 cm and 30 cm) into soybean were allocated to the subplots. Results of study showed that to maximize intercrop yields of soybean and pearl millet in a soybean-pearl millet intercrop, the optimal intra-row spacing for pearl millet is 30 cm. Intercropping soybean and pearl millet significantly (P ≤ 0.05) reduced yields of soybean (25.0 % and 22.2 % respectively, in years 2013 and 2014) and that of pearl millet (34.4 % and 33.3 % respectively, in years 2013 and 2014). Though, the highest land equivalent ratio (LER) values, highest land equivalent coefficient (LEC) values and lowest competitive ratio (CR) values were recorded for pearl millet sown into soybean at the intra-row spacing of 15 cm, however, highest aggressivity was obtained sowing pearl millet into soybean at the intra-row spacing of 25 cm, the level at which both crops dominated each other.

Valeria Gennero Università di Bergamo, Italy During the Second World War, Pearl S. Buck was both a successful novelist and an influential political organizer, involved in  well-known  campaigns  against  racism  and  imperialism. In  January  1942  she  published Dragon  Seed,  a  novel  which described the Japanese sack of Nanking in 1937 and engaged the issues of nationalism and male violence from a gendered perspective. Buck wrote the novel before the United States entered the war: she hoped to promote American awareness of  the  Chinese  fight  for  freedom,  knowing  that  the  tragic events which took place in Nanking after the fall of the city were virtually unknown in the United States. I will argue that, despite its original propagandistic intent, Dragon Seed succeeds-as Buck’s novels often do-in problematizing the notion of national identity, foregrounding the sexual politics of war.

Sixty pearl grey guinea fowl were investigated. Birds were kept in a closed facility without regard to sex. For the first three weeks, guinea fowl were kept in boxes on plastic mesh floor, and then in straw-bedded pens. They were fed commercial mash diets for turkeys or hens. At the end of 13 and 52 weeks of age, body weight was determined and birds selected for slaughter were subjected to body measurements.As guinea fowl aged, their body weight and body dimensions increased except for lower leg length in males. Compared to 13-week-old males, males aged 52 weeks had significantly higher body weight and highly significantly higher sternum length and chest circumference. As females aged, their body weight, lower leg length and chest circumference increased highly significantly, and sternum length and shank length increased significantly. Males compared to females were characterized by lower body weight at both evaluation times, and by significantly shorter lower leg at 52 weeks of age. The body conformation indices of massiveness, compactness and long-leggedness were higher in older birds.
Badania przeprowadzono na 60 perlicach perłowoszarych. Ptaki utrzymywano w pomieszczeniu zamkniętym, bez podziału na płeć. Przez pierwsze trzy tygodnie perlice utrzymywano w skrzyniach na podłodze z plastikowej siatki, a później w kojcach na słomie i karmiono je przemysłowymi mieszankami paszowymi dla indyków lub kur. Na koniec 13. i 52. tygodnia życia określono masę ciała, a na ptakach wybranych do uboju wykonano pomiary zoometryczne. Wraz z wiekiem stwierdzono zwiększenie masy i wymiarów ciała perlic, z wyjątkiem długości podudzia u samców. Samce w wieku 52 tygodni w porównaniu z 13-tygodniowymi perlikami miały statystycznie istotnie większą masę ciała oraz wysoko istotnie większą długość mostka i obwód klatki piersiowej. U samic wraz z wiekiem odnotowano wysoko istotnie zwiększenie masy ciała, długości podudzia oraz obwodu klatki piersiowej oraz istotne zwiększenie długości mostka i skoków. W obu terminach oceny samce, w porównaniu z samicami charakteryzowały się mniejszą masą ciała, a w wieku 52 tygodni statystycznie istotnie krótszym podudziem. U starszych ptaków stwierdzono większe wartości indeksów ukształtowania ciała masywności, zwięzłości i wysokonożności.

The Middle English Pearl is known for its mixture of genres, moods and various discourses. The textual journey the readers of the poem embark on is a long and demanding one, leading from elegiac lamentations and the erotic outbursts of courtly love to theological debates and apocalyptic visions. The heterogeneity of the poem has often prompted critics to overlook the continuity of the erotic mode in Pearl which emerges already in the poem’s first stanza. While it is true that throughout the dream vision the language of the text never eroticizes the relationship between the Dreamer and the Pearl Maiden to the extent that it does in the opening lines, the article argues that eroticism actually underlies the entire structure of the vision proper. Taking recourse to Roland Barthes’s distinction between the erotic and the sexual to explain the exact nature of the bond which connects the two characters, the argument posits eroticism as an expression of somatic longing; a careful analysis of Pearl through this prism provides a number of ironic insights into the mutual interactions between the Dreamer and the Maiden and highlights the poignancy of their inability to understand each other. Further conclusions are also drawn from comparing Pearl with a number of Chaucerian dream visions. Tracing the erotic in both its overt and covert forms and following its transformations in the course of the narrative, the article outlines the poet’s creative use of the mechanics of the dream vision, an increasingly popular genre in the period when the poem was written.

The pearl mussel was abundant in the Sudety Mountains until the late 19th century. No live mussels were found within the present borders of Poland since the early 20th century. In 2006–2007 we did a detailed survey of 50 streams and rivers within the former range of the pearl mussel to verify its current status and assess the habitat conditions. No live mussels were found. On the whole, the rivers and streams were found to be degraded. Only four streams met the habitat requirements of the species. Well-preserved shells with a nacre layer were found at the site of the last known population in the Koci Potok stream. To determine whether the shells represented an extinct population or rather indicated the presence of the last survivors, we placed Unio crassus shells in the stream within the historical range of occurrence. Those shells dissolved at the rate of approximately 20% per year, indicating that empty shells would not have remained intact within the channel. Possibly the earlier-found shells had been preserved in the banks above the water level. The possibility that they represent the last survivors can not be excluded. Further search for the last survivors, extended to cover northern Poland, is recommended.

The paper argues that it is possible to provide a partial explanation especially in cognitive, sociological and psychological terms for the fact that the US – Japan negotiations prior to Pearl Harbor in 1941 failed the way they did. The analysis seeks to show in detail how the role of mistranslations of some of the Japanese coded instructions which were sent from Tokyo by Foreign Minister Togo to Ambassador Nomura in Washington, D.C., and intercepted and decoded by the US military sigint personnel contributed to the failure of the negotiations, thereby making the December 1941 events at Pearl Harbor virtually unavoidable.

An unusual occurrence of parasitic "Housean pits" in internal mould of ammonoid specimen referred to as Felisporadoceras cf. subvaricatum (Sobolew) from Middle Famennian of Poland are described. Hitherto the youngest representatives of goniatites showing a pitting on the internal moulds were known from the Middle Devonian (lower Givetian), thus, most probably the presented material constitutes the youngest world record of this phenomenon.

The obligate oomycete Sclerospora graminicola (Sacc.) Schroet, is the incitant of downy mildew disease, which is the main constraint in pearl millet production worldwide. Different elicitors from Trichoderma hamatum UOM 13, e.g. mycelial extract and cell wall glucans, were assessed for their resistance elicitation efficiency and the possible underlying mechanisms. Both mycelial extract and cell wall glucans of T. hamatum UOM 13 positively influenced seed quality parameters of pearl millet, significantly enhanced seed germination and seedling vigor in comparison to the untreated control. Seed priming with cell wall glucan elicitors of T. hamatum UOM 13 suppressed downy mildew on susceptible pearl millet seedlings under greenhouse conditions by induction of systemic host resistance. Of the different elicitor delivery methods tested, transplant root dip was more effective than seed treatment and foliar spray. A combination of transplant root dip + seed treatment + foliar spray was significantly more effective than the single delivery methods. The induced resistance corresponded to up regulation of genes of important defense proteins upon pathogen inoculation. Transcripts of genes of defense enzymes glucanase, phenylalanine ammonia lyase, peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase were significantly increased due to the T. hamatum UOM elicitor effect. Expression of hydroxyproline-rich glycoprotein genes, known to play an important role in cell wall cross-linking, were also up regulated in response to T. hamatum UOM cell wall glucan treatment. This study emphasizes the role of T. hamatum UOM as a potential elicitor of downy mildew resistance in pearl millet and presents novel insights into the involvement of important defense proteins mediating such as resistance trigger.

Every liturgy grows. The liturgy of the Order of Preachers was no exception. In the 1200s, the friars faced the necessity to revise their customs, texts, and rituals. On the one hand, this situation shows how diverse the 13th-century Christianitas was, and on the other hand, it proved the presence of a desire for unity within the newly formed Order, a struggle to have all the members of the then-worldwide community pray according to the same form. The process leading to that “liturgical consensus” needed by the Preachers back in the 1200s resembles the axioms of the liturgical renewal in the 20th century. The article focuses on the history of the Dominican liturgical developments, highlighting the mindset of the 13th-century Friars Preachers facing changes in the area of prayer. In the context of debates surrounding the liturgy after Vatican II, the author provides a historical perspective in order to show similarities between both processes of liturgical renewal.

Artykuł przybliża działania podwójnego agenta Dušana Popova. W czasie II wojny światowej współpracował on zarówno z wywiadem angielskim jak i niemieckim. Jako agent Abwehry wyjechał do Stanów Zjednoczonych. Tam przekazał amerykańskim służbom zaszyfrowany kwestionariusz z pytaniami. Jedna trzecia tego kwestionariusza dotyczyła amerykańskiej bazy na Pacyfiku Pearl Harbour. Amerykanie mogli wówczas przygotować się do ataku, jednak nic nie zrobili.

W artykule przedstawiono założenia i kulisy chińsko-amerykańskiego programu współpracy wojskowej Peace Pearl. Został on przeprowadzony w schyłkowym okresie zimnej wojny, a przerwany w 1989 roku. Zakładał modernizację chińskiego myśliwca o radzieckich korzeniach J-8II za pomocą zaawansowanej zachodniej awioniki, pochodzącej z amerykańskiego samolotu F-16. 1 stycznia 1979 roku komunistyczne Chiny nawiązały oficjalne stosunki dyplomatyczne ze Stanami Zjednoczonymi. Program Peace Pearl podzielono na trzy fazy, w tekście przedstawiono dokładnie modernizowane systemy J-8II, m.in. radary, system prezentacji danych, komputer kierowania ogniem, czy też tzw. szynę danych. Autor wspomina również o współczesnym dziedzictwie programu, jakim jest system awioniki oparty na standardzie wymiany danych 1553B.

Sepphoris is, after Tiberias, the greatest city of ancient Galilee, and was for several years the capital. Its splendor reached its highest at the turn of the 1st century B.C and 1st century A.D. and in the 2nd and 3rd centuries A. D. Still, the city does not appear in the New Testament, though many other cities of Galilee are mentioned. This paper is a synthetic approach to the history and tradition of ancient and early medieval Sepphoris. It is not a typical reconstruction of the history of the city. The place of Sepphoris in the history of Galilee and the Jewish and Early Christian tradition was important, although there are few historical sources confirming this fact.

Background: The adoption of the evidence-based research paradigm by software engineering researchers has created a growing knowledge base provided by the outcomes from systematic reviews. Aim: We set out to identify and catalogue a sample of the knowledge provided by systematic reviews, to determine what support they can provide for an evidence-informed approach to teaching about software engineering practice. Method: We undertook a tertiary study (a mapping study of systematic reviews) covering the period to the end of 2015. We identified and catalogued those reviews that had findings or made recommendations that were considered relevant to teaching about industry practice. Results: We examined a sample of 276 systematic reviews, selecting 49 for which we could clearly identify practice-oriented findings and recommendations that were supported by the data analysis provided in the review. We have classified these against established software engineering education knowledge categories and discuss the extent and forms of knowledge provided for each category. Conclusion: While systematic reviews can provide knowledge that can inform teaching about practice, relatively few systematic reviews present the outcomes in a form suitable for this purpose. Using a suitable format for presenting a summary of outcomes could improve this. Additionally, the increasing number of published systematic reviews suggests that there is a need for greater coordination regarding the cataloguing of their findings and recommendations.

Now for over 70 years people have been arguing about the reasons for dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. American researchers are still divided over the issue of the purpose, effect and consequences of their use as well as moral evaluation of this American action. The polarized discussion has to a great degree focused on the traditional interpretation, on the one hand, claiming it was indispensable to finish the war and minimalize American losses; on the other hand, stating that – with Japan almost defeated and ready for capitulation – it was unnecessary. With time, the issue of competition and confrontation with the Russians was raised, questioning military considerations used for decades by the subsequent governmental circles. In historical literature one may also frequently come across indications of prejudice towards the Japanese and the need to avenge Pearl Harbor. According to the polls conducted in 1945, the majority of Americans (85%) approved of President Harry Truman’s decision and the use of atomic weapons against Japan. With time and the disclosure of the data concerning the effects of the use of this devastating weapon against civilians, and in particular, the effects and diseases caused by the radiation, a part of American society began to have their moral concerns. Thus, their approval kept falling with time: from 85% in 1945 to 72% in 1965, to 65% in 1988, to 53% in 1990. Album publications, movies, autobiographies, memoirs and interviews with the witnesses of those events, monuments, sculptures, musical pieces, paintings as well as numerous historical and popular works, and the omnipresent Internet have brought into the public circulation broader knowledge concerning the reasons and circumstances of dropping atomic bombs on the Japanese cities in August 1945. They enabled the subsequent American and Japanese generations to have deeper reflections on these painful and controversial events.

Raised shell projections on the inner shell walls that form pits on the internal moulds of Devonian ammonoids have been known for several decades. New specimens from Morocco reveal novel details of these structures; most, if not all, of which consist of a capsule of ammonoid shell that covers tiny tubes attached to the outer (= lateral or ventral) shell wall from the inside. In accordance with comparable Recent occurrences of similar structures in molluscs, we use the term “pearls” for these structures and the pits they form on the internal moulds. The nature of these encapsulated tubes is described and discussed. Because of the presence of these tubes inside the pearls, pearl arrangement, and their similarity to Recent mollusc occurrences, the tubes are interpreted as traces of parasitoses. The pearls and pits were grouped into five types based on differences in morphology, size, and arrangement. Then, having used these traits to perform a simple cladistic analysis, the resulting cladogram was compared to the phylogeny of ammonoids. Based on this comparison, it appears likely that the parasites underwent a co−evolution with the ammonoids, which lasted 10 to 15 Ma. Patterns of evolutionary events include co−speciation, “drowning on arrival” (end of parasite lineage near base of a new host clade), and “missing the boat” (parasite lineage does not adapt to a new host clade, thus not evolving a new parasite clade). Because of the lack of fossilised soft tissue, only speculations can be made about the systematic affiliation of the parasites, their life−cycle, infection strategy, and ecological framework. Some co−occurring bivalves also have pits reminiscent to structures caused by trematodes in Recent forms. Based on the available information, the tubes are interpreted as artefacts of trematode infestations, which, if correct, would extend the fossil record of parasitic trematodes into the Early Devonian.

Plant protection products represent one of the most innovative branches of the agrochemical industry which requires considerable financial investment to adequately meet agricultural needs. The optimal agrochemicals should enable farmers to maximize yields, and their components should remain active over long periods of time regardless of weather conditions. This article describes an innovative technology for the production of agrochemical suspensions in a bead mill. The suspension acts as a carrier of active ingredients. The parameters of the bead mill were presented, and the resulting suspensions were used in the production of fungicides. The parameters of the substrates used in the production of agrochemicals have to comply with legal regulations. The present experiment involved liquid chromatography, and it was conducted in accordance with good practice, in line with CIPAC guidelines.

The article contains results of our investigations on the landscape protection and formation pursued in the town of Ostróda, in the Province of Warmia and Mazury, a town which used to be called the Pearl of Oberland. The paper presents results of the landscape analysis completed by the authors, and predictions about future landscape transformations.

Polyphenol oxidase partial gene PG-PPO was cloned and characterized from Pennisetum glaucum (pearl millet) which showed 42% identity to a PPO sequence isolated from wheat at the region of Copper B with a score of 40 and e-value of 2.8. Multiple sequence alignment results revealed similarity to polyphenol oxidase (PPO) sequences from wheat, trifolium, lettuce, apricot, tobacco, tomato, pokeweed, apple, grape and poplar especially at the Copper B region of PPO. The 395 bp pearl millet PPO sequence was AT rich (53.3%) and contained the highly conserved amino acids of histidine-rich copper binding sites similar to PPO sequences from other crops. Results also indicated that PPO in pearl millet exists in multi copy. The role of the isolated PPO gene during pearl millet-downy mildew interaction was analyzed and the results showed significantly higher and rapid accumulation of PPO mRNAs in resistant pearl millet seedlings inoculated with Sclerospora graminicola in comparison to the susceptible control, demonstrating that the PPO plays a prominent role in pearl millet defense against pathogens, particularly downy mildew pathogen.

Translation can be said to be an exercise based on a tripartite comprehension: that of the text, the original author and the reader of the translated text. In translating therefore, an attempt is often made to create a text that would be comprehensible to the target reader. To effectively do this, several factors are considered, one of which is culture, especially in literary texts where culture is richly presented. A literary translator must therefore reproduce not just language but also culture. An illustration of this can be found in the translation of Hector Malot’s Sans Famille, from French to English, Kalabari and Igbo. To adapt the translated version to the various target audiences, the cultural elements of the original French text have been replaced with those of the target languages but with the semantic content intact. This is known as cultural appropriation, an application of the semio-pragmatic theory. This theory affirms Saussure’s structural linguistics thereby applying structuralism to translation.

The present paper aims to explore the topic of the vocation of a courtesan in the 19th-century France, by analyzing memoirs of tree demi-mondaines of the time: Céleste Mogador, Cora Pearl and Rigolboche. Does such a vocation exist ? If yes, how can we define this notion? The first part tries to show that prostitution isn’t chosen by women because of the their inclination to debauchery, but is the result of the failed education and parental abandonment. The second part focuses on the importance of independence in the courtesan’s life, as a part of their vocation, and the manner to gain it.

A field trial involving twenty-four millet varieties (parents and hybrids) was conducted at Bakura and zaria to determine the hetrotic performance for yield and resistance to Downey mildew infestation using Complete Randomized Block Design. Four resistant varieties (PEO5532, SOSATC88, P1449 and DMR15) and four susceptible varieties (BDP1, MOP1, LCIC9702 and PEO5984 were used as male and female respectively. The resistant varieties were crossed with the susceptible varieties using North Carolina design 11. Sixteen (F1) hybrids obtained were evaluated along with their parents for downy mildew resistance and grain yield. The study selected the best parents that give high heterosis in terms of grain yield and downy mildew resistance. PEO5984 × P1449, PEO5984 × PEO5532, PEO5984 × DMR15 and PEO5984 × SOSATC88 for yield, the best MP and BP heterosis for downy mildew incidence is PEO5984 × P1449. MOP1 × P1449 for MP heterosis and BDP1 × P1449 for BP heterosis.

W latach 2005-2008 w Wojanowie prowadzono prace budowlano-konserwatorskie w zespole pałacowym, który był jedną z trzech rezydencji pruskiej rodziny królewskiej w okolicach Jeleniej Góry. Renesansowy dwór z 1607 r. gruntownie przebudowano w połowie XIX w. w modnym wówczas stylu neogotyckim. Projekt przypisywano pierwotnie Karlowi Friedrichowi Schinklowi, architektowi króla pruskiego, ale ostatnie badania wskazują raczej na jego uczniów. Całe założenie pałacowe otacza wspaniały park krajobrazowy zaprojektowany przez Petera Josepha Lennego, dyrektora pruskich ogrodów królewskich i jednego z najwybitniejszych architektów ogrodowych XIX w. Powojenne dzieje pałacu, podobne do losów innych śląskich rezydencji, oraz pożar w 2002 r. doprowadziły do niemal całkowitego unicestwienia obiektu. Podjęte kilka lat temu prace można uznać za jedną z największych konserwacji zespołu pałacowego w Polsce w ostatnich latach. Prace objęły bowiem nie tylko pałac i otaczający go park, ale również budynki dawnego folwarku: oficyny, stajnię, stodołę, wozownię, spichlerz i oborę. W całym zespole utworzono centrum konferencyjne i wypoczynkowe z ponad 200 miejscami noclegowymi. Pałac w Wojanowie jest jedną z 30 rezydencji ziemskich znajdującej się na terenie południowej części Kotliny Jeleniogórskiej nazywanej Doliną Pałaców i Ogrodów.
In the years 2005-2008, conservation and construction work was conducted in the palace complex in Wojanów, which was one of the three royal residences of the Prussian royal family in the area of Jelenia Góra. A Renaissance manor from 1607 was converted in the middle of the 19th century in the so popular then neo-Gothic style. Initially the project was attributed to Karl Friedrich Schinkl, an architect of the Prussian king, but recent research has rather indicated his disciples. The whole palace complex is surrounded by a magnificent landscape park, designed by Peter Joseph Lenne, the director of the Prussian Royal Gardens and one of the outstanding garden architects of the 19th century. The post-war history of the palace, similar to the fate of many other residences in Silesia, and the fire in 2002, led to almost complete annihilation of the structure. The work which was undertaken a few years ago can be regarded as one of the greatest conservation ventures of a palace complex in Poland in the recent years. The enterprise encompasses not only the palace and the surrounding park, but also the outbuildings belonging to the old manor farm: outhouses, stables, barn, coach house, granary and cowshed. The whole complex was turned into a conference and holiday centre with accommodation for over 200 guests. The palace in Wojanow is one of 30 estates located in the southern part of the Jeleniogórska Valley which is suitably called the Valley of Palaces and Gardens.

W pierwszej części artykułu dokonano skrótowej oceny wybranych atrakcji turystycznych Majorki. Turystów przybywających na wyspę przyciągają nie tylko piękne piaszczyste i kamieniste plaże, malownicze zatoczki, ale i parki narodowe czy położone na wyspie jaskinie. Turystów przyciąga też sięgające czasów najdawniejszych bogactwo historyczne, reprezentowane przez liczne zabytki zarówno świeckie jak i sakralne. To miejsce warto odwiedzić choćby dla poznania wspaniałej kultury i sztuki oraz zwyczajów i obyczajów miejscowej ludności. Druga część artykułu przedstawia analizę infrastruktury turystycznej Majorki a także metodę planowania strategicznego (analizę SWOT). Majorka ma szczególny urok, który przyciąga turystów i sprawia, że powracają oni na wyspę wielokrotnie.
The first part of the article analyses briefly selected tourist attractions of Majorca. Tourists traveling to the island are drawn not only to the beautiful, sandy, and stony beaches, picturesque bays, but also the scenic national park and caves. The island, however, is not only admired for those qualities but for its historical traditions which left behind monuments – both secular and sacral. This place is worth visiting for its spending culture and art and also for the customs and habits of the local communities. The second part of the article contains an analysis of tourist infrastructure and a strategic planning method (SWOT analysis). Majorca has an alluring quality that attracts tourists and makes them return frequently.

Artykuł dotyczy przyczyn wybuchu wojny między Japonią a Stanami Zjednoczonymi, rozpoczętej atakiem Japończyków 7 grudnia 1941 roku na amerykańską bazę morską w Pearl Harbor. Autor przybliża sytuację wewnętrzną w Japonii, kierunek jej polityki zagranicznej przed wybuchem wojny oraz wpływ jaki miał na nią Pakt Ribbentrop-Mołotow. Omawia także politykę zagraniczną Stanów Zjednoczonych wobec Japonii. W latach 1940-1941 zastosowali wobec Japonii bardzo dotkliwe sankcje gospodarcze i zażądali od niej wycofania się z Chin oraz Indochin. Mimo niewielkich szans na zwycięstwo, japońscy przywódcy odrzucili te żądania i postanowili zaatakować Stany Zjednoczone.
