Nine species of gastropods are reported from the Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) part of the Badamu Formation of Central Iran. This is the first report of a gastropod assemblage of this age from the shelves of the Kimmerian Continent. Seven species belong to the Vetigastropoda and two to the Caenogastropoda. Two new species, the pleurotomariid Bathrotomaria iranica sp. nov. and the eucyclid Eucycloidea badamuensis sp. nov., are described. The remaining species are left in open nomenclature owing to poor preservation. The composition of the gastropod association is strongly reminiscent of other Tethyan gastropod faunas, in particular those from the southern shores of the Tethys (India and Arabia) and from southern Europe. This indicates a relatively uniform distribution of gastropod faunas along the Middle Jurassic shores of the western Tethys.

Opis:
Skeletal remains, some loose on the surface and others still embedded, have been recovered from the uppermost part of an outcrop of the Permian Cala del Vino Formation located near Torre del Porticciolo (Alghero, Nurra, NW Sardinia). Taphonomic analysis suggests that all the elements pertain to a single individual; ongoing studies indicate the fossil represents a large caseid close (or referable) to Cotylorhynchus; otherwise restricted to a narrow geographic and stratigraphic zone of the central USA. The new finding, the first of a caseid in Italy and one of few in Europe, enlarges the known distribution of the family and provides a significant and key chronostratigraphic constraint for the continental succession of this area and, in turn, helps establish a stratigraphic framework for the Permian units cropping out in Italy and southern France.

Opis:
A new gastropod genus and its type species, namely Ederazyga fanchini gen. et sp. nov., are described from the upper Rhaetian deposits of Lombardy (northern Italy) and tentatively placed into the family Zygopleuridae. The first appearance of Ederazyga is recorded in the lower Carnian deposits of Southern Alps and the stratigraphical distribution of the genus ends almost at the Triassic/Jurassic boundary. Its occurrence in Norian beds of the Nayband Basin (central Iran) suggests an eastward extension of the distribution during that time. Ederazyga is probably one of the Alpine gastropod taxa appearing in this area after the formation of the basin. The genus is possibly related to a group of Early Jurassic, medium to large Zygopleura-like species that are well represented in the Sinemurian and Pliensbachian carbonate platform deposits of the Mediterranean region and in the Hettangian to Pliensbachian successions of the European epicontinental shelf. This group shows an apparent species radiation in these areas testifying to the gastropod recovery following the Late Triassic decline in biodiversity. Ederazyga fanchini is shown to be congeneric with Cerithium? lateplicatum Klipstein, 1843, which is the type species of Camponaxis Bandel, 1995. The definition and diagnosis of Camponaxis was based on specimens that are clearly different, at generic and higher taxonomic levels, from the holotype of C.? lateplicatum. They belong to a distinct species here named Camponaxis bandeli sp. nov. Several species have been subsequently ascribed to Camponaxis following its original diagnosis. Therefore, we invoke ICZN Art. 70.3.2 in order to preserve the unambiguous identity of the genus and to ensure its nomenclatural stability. Camponaxis bandeli is fixed as the new type species for Camponaxis and C.? lateplicatum is here assigned to Ederazyga.

A new species of micromorphic articulate brachiopod (Rhynchonellida) Lambdarina jugowiensis sp. nov., from the upper Viséan (Sokolec Beds) of central Sudetes, SW Poland, is described. The studied specimens are calcified, what makes them unique in respect of their state of preservation. The material is represented by a full range of growth stages; from brephic to gerontic. Based on its morphological features and the palaeogeographical distribution of all its known species, two main evolutionary lines are proposed for the genus; the Australian and the European ones. Lambdarina was widely distributed in the equatorial-tropical waters of marginal seas of the Palaeotethys Ocean, mostly during Mississippian time.

Cambrian Series 2 shelly fossils from thick carbonate successions in East Antarctica have received limited systematic treatment through the 20th century. Described here are the East Antarctic camenellan tommotiids from the Shackleton Limestone in the Central Transantarctic Mountains and the Schneider Hills limestone in the Argentina Range. This material comes from both newly sampled collections and incompletely described material from older collections. The assemblage supports correlation to the Dailyatia odyssei Zone and Pararaia janeae Trilobite Zone of South Australia, with the newly examined specimens of Dailyatia decobruta from the Shackleton Limestone providing direct correlation to the Mernmerna Formation of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges and White Point Conglomerate of Kangaroo Island. These East Antarctic assemblages include five species referred to Dailyatia, in addition to an undetermined kennardiid species and fragments of the problematic Shetlandia multiplicata. The results further corroborate the notion that fossiliferous carbonate clasts found on King George Island were sourced from the same carbonate shelf as the Shackleton Limestone, with the taxon S. multiplicata found in both units. The Schneider Hills limestone in the Argentina Range has yielded sclerites of Dailyatia icari sp. nov., currently only known from this location.

Opis:
Study of the sections near the Mikhaylov (Ryazan region) has made it possible to improve the infrazonal subdivision of the Middle Callovian – Lower Oxfordian of the European Russia by ammonites. The Athleta Zone is the most complete in the studied sections. A sequence of kosmoceratid biohorizons (phaeinum, proniae, rowlstonense and kuklikum) is established here, as well as infrazonal units based on a phylogenetic sequence of species of the genus Funiferites. A study of the paleobiodiversity and frequency of occurrence of ammonites at different intervals of the section showed that the ammonite assemblages of the Athleta Zone are Sub-Boreal or Sub-Tethyan, while in the Lamberti Zone they are Boreal, and in the Lower Oxfordian they are Arctic. It is also shown that the change in ammonite composition in the sections coincides with the cycles of transgressions and regressions of Boreal basins. New species and subspecies of the ammonites Funiferites allae compressum, Cadoceras (Eichwaldiceras) intermedium, Brightia (B.) lominadzei, B. (B.) progzhellensis, B. (B.) eccentrtica, B. (Glyptia) canaliculata stankevitchae, Zieteniceras rarecostatum are described.

Here we present a description of the dipnoan remains collected from the middle to upper Norian (Upper Triassic) of Jameson Land, East Greenland. The specimens consist of isolated tooth plates and skull bones of Ptychoceratodus, the most complete Late Triassic dipnoan material from Greenland. This genus is reported for the first time from the Upper Triassic of Greenland. The studied material belongs to Ptychoceratodus rectangulus previously known from the middle–upper Norian of Germany. It fills the biogeographical gap between the records of the Germanic and the Jameson Land basins. A reconstruction of the skull roof is provided, based on isolated bones collected from the same bone-bed. Their good preservation enables recognition of the sensory line pits, arranged similarly as in the extant Protopterus, suggesting a comparable mode of life. This finding has implications for our understanding of the disparity in Ptychoceratodus dipnoans, as well as the morphology between closely related dipnoans of the Late Triassic ecosystems.

The dinosaur footprints cf. Parabrontopodus isp. Lockley, Farlow et Meyer, 1994, attributed to sauropods, have been found in Hettangian (earliest Jurassic) alluvial deposits in Anina (Colonia Ceha Quarry, Resita Basin), belonging to the Getic Nappe in the Southern Carpathians, Western Romania. Heteropodous pes-manus sets and one short, narrow-gauge trackway have been recognized on a large sandstone surface trampled by sauropods. Agreater load was carried by the inner digits of the pes, particularly digit I, and the heel pad is deeply imprinted, which points to a sub-plantigrade pes and gravipodal posture, typical for Eusaropoda. A pentadactyl manus imprint suggestetthat manus digits of early sauropods might have been separate and perhaps more functional when supporting walking on unstable, sticky ground. These tracks, the first find of Jurassic dinosaur footprints in Romania, add an important site to the relatively rare record of earliest Jurassic sauropod footprints. These tracks also confirm that Pangaean islands and peninsulas around the Western Tethys were inhabited by early sauropods. These peninsulas or islands, including a hypothetical "Moesian Island", must have been at least temporarily connected with the mainland. The sizes of the Romanian footprints are similar to the Hettangian Parabrontopodus isp. tracks described from Poland (mainland Pangaea — Eurasian area) and Italy (Tethyan domain) and do not indicate insular dwarfism.

This is the first Paratethyan record of a minute scallop species Parvamussium fenestratum (Forbes, 1844). The species was found in Middle Miocene (Upper Badenian) clayey deposits in the Surzha borehole, the Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep Basin. Examination of other Parvamussium specimens stored in the Museum of the Earth in Warsaw and in the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest revealed further Paratethyan records of Parvamussium fenestratum. These specimens, previously referred to Parvamussium felsineum (Foresti, 1893), were identified in the Middle Miocene faunas of Poland (Monastyrz and Długi Goraj, Roztocze Hills) and Hungary (Makkoshotyka, Tokaj Mts.). In the Mediterranean Neogene this extremely rare species has been reported from the Lower Miocene (uppermost Burdigalian) of Italy and from the Lower Pliocene (Zanclean) of Spain. Research on the Oligocene-Miocene succession in the Paratethys has shown representatives of Parvamussium Sacco, 1897 to be moderately abundant in clayey facies in different basins and the genus is regarded as biostratigraphically important. Data on the distribution of other Paratethyan and Neogene Mediterranean Parvamussium species viz., Parvamussium bronni (Mayer, 1861), P. duodecimlamellatum (Bronn, 1831), P. felsineum (Foresti, 1893) and P. miopliocenicum (Ruggieri, 1949) are reported. Finally, palaeobiological and palaeobiogeographical characteristics on the genus Parvamussium Sacco, 1897 the Early Cretaceous to Recent time span are described.

The origin of reptiles in the tetrapod footprint record has always been a debated topic, despite the great potential of fossiliferous ichnosites to shed much light on reptile origins when compared to the much less extensive skeletal record. This is in part due to an unclear ichnotaxonomy of the earliest tracks attributed to reptiles that has resulted in unreliable trackmaker attributions. We comprehensively revise the earliest supposed reptile ichnotaxon, Notalacerta missouriensis, based on a neotype and a selection of well-preserved material from the type locality and other sites. A synapomorphy-based track-trackmaker attribution suggests eureptiles and, more specifically, ́protorothyridids ́ such as Paleothyris as the most probable trackmakers. A revision of the entire Pennsylvanian-Cisuralian record of this ichnotaxon unveils an unexpected abundance and a wide palaeogeographical distribution. The earliest unequivocal occurrence of Notalacerta is in the middle Bashkirian (early Langsettian) at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Joggins Fossil Cliffs (Joggins, Nova Scotia, Canada). This occurrence also coincides with the earliest occurrence of reptile body fossils (Hylonomus lyelli), which are found at the same site. Notalacerta is abundant and widely distributed during the Bashkirian, mostly in sediments deposited in tidal palaeoenvironments, and less common in the Moscovian and Kasimovian. During the Gzhelian and Asselian, Notalacerta occurrences are unknown, but it occurs again during the Sakmarian and is widespread but not abundant during the Artinskian, mostly in fully continental palaeoenvironments.

Sponges are one of the most ancient animal phyla with about 8850 living species and about 5000 described fossil taxa. Most sponges are marine and live at all depths of all oceans. Freshwater bodies (lakes, rivers) are inhabited only by a small minority of species, ca. 240 (< 3%) comprising the order Spongillida (Demospongiae) most of which are able to produce specialized resting bodies to survive harsh terrestrial environmental conditions. This highly disproportionate ratio of marine and freshwater sponges is even more accentuated in the field of palaeontology with rare records reported up to the Miocene (< 0.4% of all known fossil sponges). Only a few fossil taxa were correctly supported by strong and convincing taxonomic morphotraits at genus and species level, thus we provide here an overview of fossil freshwater sponges focusing on their morphotraits and distribution in time and space. Each recorded taxon is described in detail following the modern taxonomy and nomenclature. All fossil data suggest a clear trend of long term conservative morphology in the evolutionary history of Spongillida, although some traits of Recent gemmules evolved in a wide array of adaptive morpho-functional novelties. The majority of accepted fossil species belongs to the cosmopolitan family Spongillidae. The genera Oncosclera and Potamophloios of the family Potamolepidae seem to have had, in the past, a much larger geographic range than today. A synthesis of fossil taxa morphotraits is also provided in an Appendix 1.

Triceratium barbadense Greville, 1861a, T. brachiatum Brightwell, 1856, T. inconspicuum Greville, 1861b and T. kanayae Fenner, 1984a, are among the most common diatoms reported worldwide from lower to middle Eocene biosiliceous sediments. Due to complicated nomenclatural histories, however, they are often confused. A morphometric analysis performed herein indicates that T. brachiatum is conspecific with T. inconspicuum, and that both were previously often misidentified as T. barbadense. Triceratium barbadense sensu stricto is a distinct species similar to Triceratium castellatum West, 1860. Triceratium brachiatum and T. kanayae are transferred herein to a new genus, Fenneria, for which a close phylogenetic relationship with Medlinia Sims, 1998 is proposed. A review of the geographic and stratigraphic distribution of Fenneria shows that the best constrained records of its occurrences are found at DSDP Site 338, and ODP Sites 1051 and 1260. The ages of the base (B) and top (T) of each species’ stratigraphic range are calibrated here to the Geomagnetic Polarity Timescale either directly or inferred via correlation with dinocyst biostratigraphy. Latitudinal diachroneity of ~7 million years is documented for F. brachiata, which disappears earlier in tropical and mid-latitude sites than in the northern high latitudes. These observations, coupled with a preliminary compilation of the Chron C20n taxonomic composition of pelagic diatom assemblages for Sites 338, 1051 and 1260, indicate that diatoms diversified palaeobiogeographically considerably earlier than the Eocene-Oligocene Transition, as commonly believed. This study also emphasizes the importance of the detailed examination of specimens from both museum collections and deep-sea cores as a step toward enhancing the utility of Palaeogene diatoms in palaeoceanographic and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions.

Opis:
Starting from a subjective viewpoint on the decreasing interest in invertebrate fossil taxonomy, this essay discusses its importance in palaeobiological studies exemplified with cases from the palaeobiogeography and palaeoecology of rugose corals, and aims at provoking a discussion on the topic. The possible causes of this negative declining trend include inherent problems of palaeontological taxonomy, and changing systems in science and higher education.

Opis:
The Prosopidae is an extinct family, consisting mostly of Mesozoic species. Most probably it accommodates the ancestors of all brachyurans in the large sense. The family appeared in the Late Pliensbachian and disappeared at the Early Palaeocene. Evolution of the Prosopidae, and therefore, brachyuran evolution started on Middle Jurassic, shallow, soft bottom marine environments. The world-wide Callovian transgression made possible the formation of bioherms and reefs in the Late Jurassic, creating ecological niches for the rapidly differentiating prosopids. These crabs migrated rapidly all over Europe in the Oxfordian and began to flourish and massively occupied sponge megafacies from Portugal to Poland. In the Kimmeridgian, the area of known prosopids shrank, which has probably been connected with decreasing of the reef facies. In turn, a Tithonian regression in the per-Tethyan area resulted in changes of habitats and in colonisation of the coral reefs. When reef facies retreated at the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary, the favourable conditions for crab development also vanished, so the known Cretaceous prosopids are rare and spatially dispersed. In Tertiary, the closely related descendants of them, homolodromiids, inhabited preferably soft muddy bottoms in deeper, colder waters.
Kraby z rodziny Prosopidae, reprezentowane są prawie wyłącznie przez gatunki mezozoiczne. Z filogenetycznego punktu widzenia, są one prawdopodobnie przodkami wszystkich pozostałych gatunków krabów. Przedstawiciele tej rodziny znani są od późnego pliensbachu do wczesnego paleocenu. Ewolucja prosopidów, a poprzez to ewolucja pozostałych krabów, rozpoczęła sią w środkowojurajskich, płytkich środowiskach morskich o miękkim charakterze dna. Ogólnoświatowa transgresja kelowejska stworzyła dogodne warunki do powstania różnorodnych bioherm i raf w późnej jurze, które stanowiły nisze ekologiczne dla szybko różnicujących się dzięki temu krabów z rodziny Prosopidae. Kraby te migrowały gwałtownie na całą Europę w oksfordzie, masowo zasiedlając megafację gąbkową i są obecnie znajdowane w utworach tej facji od Portugalii do Polski. W kimerydzie obszar występowania prosopidów wyraźnie się skurczył, co było prawdopodobnie związane ze stopniowym zanikiem tej facji. Z kolei w tytonie regresja w obszarach perytetydzkich spowodowała zmianę środowiska życia krabów i kolonizację przez nie raf koralowych. Dogodne warunki dla rozwoju tych krabów gwałtownie się pogorszyły blisko granicy jury i kredy (zanikanie facji rafowych) skutkiem czego kredowe prosopidy są rzadkie i geograficznie rozproszone. W trzeciorzędzie najbliżsi potomkowie rodziny Prosopidae - kopalni przedstawiciele rodziny Homolodromiidae - zasiedlili środowiska miękkich den głębszych i zimniejszych mórz.
