Jurassic rocks are widely distributed and superbly exposed in the Alborz Mts. (northern Iran) and Koppeh Dagh (northeastern Iran). The Lower Jurassic and large parts of the Middle Jurassicare characterized by a thick siliciclastic succession, whereas the Upper Bajocian to Tithonian rocks are predominantly carbonates, which represent a platform, slope and basin system. The Upper Bajocian-Tithonian ammonite faunas the NNE Iran are mostly of Submediterranean affinity, but elements of Subboreal, Mediterranean, and Ethiopian provinces are occasionally intermingled. Palaeobiogeographically the Late Bajocian to Bathonian ammonites belong to Submediterranean Province, as elsewhere in north and central Iran. This is supported by the occurrence of ammonites such as Garantiana and Morphoceras and some cosmopolitan taxa such as Cadomites and Oxycerites. In order to unravel the origin of the faunal elements and their migration routes, the relationship of the ammonite fauna of Iran to that of other regions was evaluated. On the whole, at the species level, the Toarcian to Early Bajocian ammonite faunas of northern and central Iran show a close relationship to that of northwestern Europe. A characteristic feature of this fauna is the scarcity of Phylloceratidae (accounting for less than 1% up to 3%) and the absence of Lytoceratidae. Remarkably, from Late Bathonian onward to Kimmeridgian, Phylloceratidae account for more than 50% of the ammonites fauna. Palaeogeographic reconstructions show the position of the Iranian plate (North and Central Iran) during the Middle Jurassic time at the southern margin of Eurasia at a palaeo-latitude of around 30° N which rather corresponds to European regions (Enay & Cariou, 1997). The open migration routes across pericontinental shelf seas along the northern Tethyan margin that were approximately parallel to palaeo-latitudes may explain the strong affinities of the Late Bajocian–Bathonian ammonites of northern and Central Iran to those of the Submediterranean Province. The Callovian ammonite fauna has a typical northwest Tethyan character, and belong to the Submediterranean faunal province (Seyed-Emami et al., 2013), and are largely dominated by Phylloceratidae ammonites. These pelagic taxa that preferred open oceanic conditions are accompanied consistently by Perisphinctidae, Reineckeiidae, Oppeliidae (Hecticoceratinae), Macrocephalitidae , Tulitidae, Aspidoceratidae (Parawedekindia, Peltoceras). On the other hand, this is supported by the occurrence of Submediterranean ammonites such as Macrocephalites, Pachyceras, and some cosmopolitan taxa such as Hecticoceras and Reineckeia. Some taxa from the Oxfordian- Kimmeridgian belong to the Western Tethys Province (Sequeirosia and Passendorferia) or Subboreal Province (Cardioceras). It is remarkable that, besides some cosmopolitan ammonites, there is no direct connection with faunas from southwestern Iran, western India and the southern Tethys. Finally, the Tithonian ammonite faunas of northeastern Iran are mostly of Submediterranean affinity (Seyed-Emami et al., 2013). However elements of the Mediterranean faunal provinces occasionally occur. In order to unravel the origin of the faunal elements and their migration routes, the relationship of the ammonite fauna of Iran to that of other regions need to be analysed in the future. Especially the appearance of several allegedly regionally restricted Ataxioceratidae such as Phanerostephanus, Nannostephanus, Nothostephans and the Oppeliidae as Oxylenticeras, which occur in Ethiopian Province (Page, 2008) is of great palaeobiogeographical interest.

The Middle Devonian was an exceptional time for foraminiferal evolution because of the emergence of the first true calcareous multilocular taxa. Despite being key forms for an understanding of the origin of foraminiferal multilocularity, which is one of the most intriguing events in the evolutionary history of the group, they are largely unstudied. These unique foraminifera, including representatives of the genera Cremsia, Moravammina, Pseudopalmula, Semitextularia, and Vasicekia, are presented herein as well as foraminifer-like microfossils of uncertain biological position. The studied material comes from the Middle Givetian strata of the Miłoszów section and the Eifelian part of the Grzegorzowice-Skały section (Holy Cross Mountains, Poland). Described isolated specimens are in an exceptionally good state of preservation on a worldwide scale, which enabled the detailed analysis of test morphologies, complementing previous papers based on less well-preserved material. The suggested systematics of the foraminifera collected attempts to revise scarce taxonomic data that is still under debate, especially the classification of Moravammina, Cremsia, and Vasicekia. The Devonian foraminifers presented were prominent endobenthic and epibenthic inhabitants of common organic coral-stromatoporoid buildups. Palaeobiogeographical records show that during the Middle Devonian, the studied forms extended their exclusive European distribution into further Laurussian shelves and shallow seas, located in the northern and southeastern parts of the Rheic basin. This assumes that such assemblages may be used as palaeoenvironmental indicators. However, at present, their correlative potential is unknown.

Cambrian Series 2 shelly fossils from thick carbonate successions in East Antarctica have received limited systematic treatment through the 20th century. Described here are the East Antarctic camenellan tommotiids from the Shackleton Limestone in the Central Transantarctic Mountains and the Schneider Hills limestone in the Argentina Range. This material comes from both newly sampled collections and incompletely described material from older collections. The assemblage supports correlation to the Dailyatia odyssei Zone and Pararaia janeae Trilobite Zone of South Australia, with the newly examined specimens of Dailyatia decobruta from the Shackleton Limestone providing direct correlation to the Mernmerna Formation of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges and White Point Conglomerate of Kangaroo Island. These East Antarctic assemblages include five species referred to Dailyatia, in addition to an undetermined kennardiid species and fragments of the problematic Shetlandia multiplicata. The results further corroborate the notion that fossiliferous carbonate clasts found on King George Island were sourced from the same carbonate shelf as the Shackleton Limestone, with the taxon S. multiplicata found in both units. The Schneider Hills limestone in the Argentina Range has yielded sclerites of Dailyatia icari sp. nov., currently only known from this location.

Triceratium barbadense Greville, 1861a, T. brachiatum Brightwell, 1856, T. inconspicuum Greville, 1861b and T. kanayae Fenner, 1984a, are among the most common diatoms reported worldwide from lower to middle Eocene biosiliceous sediments. Due to complicated nomenclatural histories, however, they are often confused. A morphometric analysis performed herein indicates that T. brachiatum is conspecific with T. inconspicuum, and that both were previously often misidentified as T. barbadense. Triceratium barbadense sensu stricto is a distinct species similar to Triceratium castellatum West, 1860. Triceratium brachiatum and T. kanayae are transferred herein to a new genus, Fenneria, for which a close phylogenetic relationship with Medlinia Sims, 1998 is proposed. A review of the geographic and stratigraphic distribution of Fenneria shows that the best constrained records of its occurrences are found at DSDP Site 338, and ODP Sites 1051 and 1260. The ages of the base (B) and top (T) of each species’ stratigraphic range are calibrated here to the Geomagnetic Polarity Timescale either directly or inferred via correlation with dinocyst biostratigraphy. Latitudinal diachroneity of ~7 million years is documented for F. brachiata, which disappears earlier in tropical and mid-latitude sites than in the northern high latitudes. These observations, coupled with a preliminary compilation of the Chron C20n taxonomic composition of pelagic diatom assemblages for Sites 338, 1051 and 1260, indicate that diatoms diversified palaeobiogeographically considerably earlier than the Eocene-Oligocene Transition, as commonly believed. This study also emphasizes the importance of the detailed examination of specimens from both museum collections and deep-sea cores as a step toward enhancing the utility of Palaeogene diatoms in palaeoceanographic and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions.

Starting from a subjective viewpoint on the decreasing interest in invertebrate fossil taxonomy, this essay discusses its importance in palaeobiological studies exemplified with cases from the palaeobiogeography and palaeoecology of rugose corals, and aims at provoking a discussion on the topic. The possible causes of this negative declining trend include inherent problems of palaeontological taxonomy, and changing systems in science and higher education.

Procardium gen. nov. is proposed for a group of early Miocene to Recent large cardiids in the subfamily Cardiinae. The type species is Cardium indicum, the only living representative, previously assigned to the genus Cardium. It is a mainly West African species, with a very limited occurrence in the westernmost Mediterranean. Procardium gen. nov. and Cardium differ markedly with regard to shell characters and have distinct evolutionary and biogeographic histories. Six species, in the early Miocene to Pleistocene range, and one Recent species are assigned to the new genus: Procardium magnei sp. nov., P. jansseni sp. nov., P. danubianum, P. kunstleri, P. avisanense, P. diluvianum, and P. indicum. During the Miocene, Procardium gen. nov. had a wide distribution in Europe, including the Proto-Mediterranean Sea, Western and Central Paratethys and NE Atlantic, with a maximum diversity during the Langhian and Serravallian. Its palaeobiogeographic history was strongly controlled by climate. During the Langhian stage, warm conditions allowed the genus to reach its highest latitude, ca. 54° N, in the southern North Sea Basin. With cooling, its latitudinal range gradually retreated southward, becoming mainly Mediterranean in the Pliocene–Pleistocene, and West African at present.

Sponges are one of the most ancient animal phyla with about 8850 living species and about 5000 described fossil taxa. Most sponges are marine and live at all depths of all oceans. Freshwater bodies (lakes, rivers) are inhabited only by a small minority of species, ca. 240 (< 3%) comprising the order Spongillida (Demospongiae) most of which are able to produce specialized resting bodies to survive harsh terrestrial environmental conditions. This highly disproportionate ratio of marine and freshwater sponges is even more accentuated in the field of palaeontology with rare records reported up to the Miocene (< 0.4% of all known fossil sponges). Only a few fossil taxa were correctly supported by strong and convincing taxonomic morphotraits at genus and species level, thus we provide here an overview of fossil freshwater sponges focusing on their morphotraits and distribution in time and space. Each recorded taxon is described in detail following the modern taxonomy and nomenclature. All fossil data suggest a clear trend of long term conservative morphology in the evolutionary history of Spongillida, although some traits of Recent gemmules evolved in a wide array of adaptive morpho-functional novelties. The majority of accepted fossil species belongs to the cosmopolitan family Spongillidae. The genera Oncosclera and Potamophloios of the family Potamolepidae seem to have had, in the past, a much larger geographic range than today. A synthesis of fossil taxa morphotraits is also provided in an Appendix 1.

No Vendian or lowermost Lower Cambrian deposits have yet been encountered in the Holy Cross Mts. and Nida Trough. The Cambrian of the Holy Cross Mts. is represented by Lower, Middle and Upper Cambrian deposits, containing both macro- and microfossils. The Lower Cambrian begins with deposits containing a non-trilobite fauna that does not allow precise age determination. The overlying Cambrian deposits are subdivided on the basis of trilobite faunas. Unfortunately, the species are often endemic, and correlation with the Scandinavian biostratigraphic scheme is limited.

Skeletal remains, some loose on the surface and others still embedded, have been recovered from the uppermost part of an outcrop of the Permian Cala del Vino Formation located near Torre del Porticciolo (Alghero, Nurra, NW Sardinia). Taphonomic analysis suggests that all the elements pertain to a single individual; ongoing studies indicate the fossil represents a large caseid close (or referable) to Cotylorhynchus; otherwise restricted to a narrow geographic and stratigraphic zone of the central USA. The new finding, the first of a caseid in Italy and one of few in Europe, enlarges the known distribution of the family and provides a significant and key chronostratigraphic constraint for the continental succession of this area and, in turn, helps establish a stratigraphic framework for the Permian units cropping out in Italy and southern France.

The dinosaur footprints cf. Parabrontopodus isp. Lockley, Farlow et Meyer, 1994, attributed to sauropods, have been found in Hettangian (earliest Jurassic) alluvial deposits in Anina (Colonia Ceha Quarry, Resita Basin), belonging to the Getic Nappe in the Southern Carpathians, Western Romania. Heteropodous pes-manus sets and one short, narrow-gauge trackway have been recognized on a large sandstone surface trampled by sauropods. Agreater load was carried by the inner digits of the pes, particularly digit I, and the heel pad is deeply imprinted, which points to a sub-plantigrade pes and gravipodal posture, typical for Eusaropoda. A pentadactyl manus imprint suggestetthat manus digits of early sauropods might have been separate and perhaps more functional when supporting walking on unstable, sticky ground. These tracks, the first find of Jurassic dinosaur footprints in Romania, add an important site to the relatively rare record of earliest Jurassic sauropod footprints. These tracks also confirm that Pangaean islands and peninsulas around the Western Tethys were inhabited by early sauropods. These peninsulas or islands, including a hypothetical "Moesian Island", must have been at least temporarily connected with the mainland. The sizes of the Romanian footprints are similar to the Hettangian Parabrontopodus isp. tracks described from Poland (mainland Pangaea — Eurasian area) and Italy (Tethyan domain) and do not indicate insular dwarfism.

Sixty-two Middle Devonian brachiopod species are described on the basis of >1300 specimens from the Taboumakhlof Formation (and subordinately probably also from the top of the El Otfal Formation) at Madne el Mrakib (middle to late Eifelian or early Givetian?), Aferdou el Mrakib (late Eifelian to middle Givetian), and Guelb el Maharch (early Givetian) on the southern edge of the MaÎder Syncline (eastern Anti-Atlas, Mo- rocco). Representatives of Craniida (2 taxa), Strophomenida (5), Productida (2), Orthotetida (2), Orthida (5), Pentamerida (5), Rhynchonellida (9), Atrypida (14), Athyridida (7), Spiriferida (9), and Spiriferinida (2) are present. The fauna is dominated quantitatively by the Atrypida (24% of taxa, about the half of specimens, and the commonest species Atryparia dispersa making up about 13% of the material); the Rhynchonellida (16% of taxa, about one-sixth of specimens) are the second largest order. A new genus of the family Pugnacidae (order Rhynchonellida), Paulinaerhynchia, is proposed with the type species P. paulinae gen. et sp. nov. from Maharch; it is closest to Pugnax, from which it differs in distinct costation, lack of a dorsal septum and septalium, and rudimentary dental plates. Desquamatia (D.) deserti sp. nov., a large and finely costate representative of the genus, is described also from Maharch. Antirhynchonella and Glosshypothyridina are reported for the first time or con- firmed to be present in the Givetian. Forty (possibly up to 46) species (71 or possibly up to 82% of the taxa identified at the species level) are present also in either Eifel (Germany) or the Holy Cross Mountains (Poland). Such a high ratio of species in common attests to unconstrained faunal exchanges among benthic faunas between the northern and southern shores of the Variscan Sea during the Middle Devonian. This favours the palaeogeo- graphic hypothesis of a narrow Variscan Sea.

Nine species of gastropods are reported from the Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) part of the Badamu Formation of Central Iran. This is the first report of a gastropod assemblage of this age from the shelves of the Kimmerian Continent. Seven species belong to the Vetigastropoda and two to the Caenogastropoda. Two new species, the pleurotomariid Bathrotomaria iranica sp. nov. and the eucyclid Eucycloidea badamuensis sp. nov., are described. The remaining species are left in open nomenclature owing to poor preservation. The composition of the gastropod association is strongly reminiscent of other Tethyan gastropod faunas, in particular those from the southern shores of the Tethys (India and Arabia) and from southern Europe. This indicates a relatively uniform distribution of gastropod faunas along the Middle Jurassic shores of the western Tethys.

Tunethyris blodgetti sp. nov. from the Triassic Saharonim Formation, Makhtesh Ramon, an erosional cirque in southern Israel, is erected on the basis of a suite of 39 articulated specimens. The shells are very strongly sulciplicated, a feature that seems to be more prevalent in the Mesozoic than the Palaeozoic. The Saharonim Formation was deposited under quasi-normal, calm, relatively shallow marine conditions. Faunal constituents of the Saharonim Formation include conodonts, ostracods, foraminiferans, bivalves, cephalopods, gastropods, echinoderms and vertebrate remains that belong to the Sephardic Province and are diagnostic of the Middle Triassic series of Israel. The faunal composition and shallow depositional environment of the strata may help differentiate the Sephardic Province from the Germanic Muschelkalk and the Alpine Tethyan faunas to the north.

This record indicates that these exotic ammonite findings are not of long-drifting necroplanktonic shells, but stem from animals that have spread over this area after immigration from the Tethys

A new species of micromorphic articulate brachiopod (Rhynchonellida) Lambdarina jugowiensis sp. nov., from the upper Viséan (Sokolec Beds) of central Sudetes, SW Poland, is described. The studied specimens are calcified, what makes them unique in respect of their state of preservation. The material is represented by a full range of growth stages; from brephic to gerontic. Based on its morphological features and the palaeogeographical distribution of all its known species, two main evolutionary lines are proposed for the genus; the Australian and the European ones. Lambdarina was widely distributed in the equatorial-tropical waters of marginal seas of the Palaeotethys Ocean, mostly during Mississippian time.

Here we present a description of the dipnoan remains collected from the middle to upper Norian (Upper Triassic) of Jameson Land, East Greenland. The specimens consist of isolated tooth plates and skull bones of Ptychoceratodus, the most complete Late Triassic dipnoan material from Greenland. This genus is reported for the first time from the Upper Triassic of Greenland. The studied material belongs to Ptychoceratodus rectangulus previously known from the middle–upper Norian of Germany. It fills the biogeographical gap between the records of the Germanic and the Jameson Land basins. A reconstruction of the skull roof is provided, based on isolated bones collected from the same bone-bed. Their good preservation enables recognition of the sensory line pits, arranged similarly as in the extant Protopterus, suggesting a comparable mode of life. This finding has implications for our understanding of the disparity in Ptychoceratodus dipnoans, as well as the morphology between closely related dipnoans of the Late Triassic ecosystems.

The eoorthid brachiopod Apheoorthina is reported for the first time from the Lower Ordovician of NW Argentina. It is represented by a species similar to A. ferrigena from the Tremadocian of the Prague Basin, increasing the faunal affinities between the Central Andean Basin and the South European microcontinents, in particular the Bohemian region (Perunica). Nine out of the fourteen brachiopod genera reported from the Tremadocian of the Central Andean Basin (~64%) are shared with the Mediterranean region, four of which (~28%) have been recorded in the Prague Basin, and two (Kvania and Apheoorthina) are restricted to the Central Andes and Perunica. Dispersal pathways around Gondwana are analyzed in the light of major factors affecting large-scale distribution of brachiopods (environment, larval capacity for dispersal, oceanic currents). The presence in Apheoorthina aff. ferrigena of a well-preserved larval protegulum measuring 420 μm in width and 210 μm in length strongly suggests that this species had planktotrophic larvae capable of long-distance dispersal. According to recent ocean-atmosphere general circulation models for the Ordovician Period, the Central Andean margin was dominated by the cold-water Antarctica Current. Despite the complex non-zonal pattern produced by current deflections around the peri-Gondwanan microcontinents, the general westward circulation sense favoured larval dispersal from the Andean region to North Africa, Avalonia, the Armorican Terrane Assemblage, and Perunica. On the other hand, the eastwards flowing Gondwana Current connected the North Gondwana waters with the South American epicontinental seas, which could explain the reversed migration of some brachiopods.

The earliest ostracods from the Bohemian Massif (Central European Variscides) have been recorded from the Middle Ordovician of the Prague Basin (Barrandian area), in the upper Klabava Formation, and became an abundant component of fossil assemblages in the overlying Šárka Formation. Both early ostracod associations consist of eight species in total, representing mainly eridostracans, palaeocopids, and binodicopids. The revision, description, or redescription of all species and their distribution in the basin is provided. Their diversification patterns and palaeogeographical relationships to ostracod assemblages from other regions are discussed.

The siliciclastic sequence of the Lower Devonian of the southern part of the Holy Cross Mountains in Poland is renown for abundant vertebrate fossils, including ostracoderm, sarcopterygian, acanthodian, chondrichthyan, and placoderm remains. Study of the vertebrate assemblage from the “placoderm sandstone” from Podłazie Hill in the Holy Cross Mountains reveals that the remains belong to Kujdanowiaspis sp. among other unspecified actinolepids and brachythoracids. The Polish actinolepid material is characterised by sizes bigger than those of the Podolian specimens; this may be related to geographic variation. Owing to the proximity between Podolia and Holy Cross Mountains we suggest that Kujdanowiaspis sp. from the Holy Cross Mountains may be a refugee of some species of Kujdanowiaspis from the Lochkovian–Pragian of Podolia and/or from Spain. Some anterolateral plates provisionally assigned to Arthrodira indet. probably represent a new genus due to the high overlapping surface for median dorsal and anteroventrolateral plates.

A cladistic analysis of Megadontosuchus arduini from the middle Eocene of Monte Duello (NE Italy) confirms its tomistomine relationships, but the low number of scorable characters determines a low resolution within the tomistomine clade. However, Megadontosuchus is clearly distinct from the other Eocene European or North African tomistomines, in having a moderate elongated but robust rostrum, massive maxillary and dentary teeth and large supratemporal fenestrae. The rostrum and teeth characteristics could indicate that M. arduini had a degree of feeding specialization intermediate between Maroccosuchus zennaroi and the Eocene European tomistomines. A summary of tomistomine palaeobiogeography suggests that despite only one species with a rather restricted range survives at present, such a clade had a glorious past with a world wide distribution documented by a conspicuous fossil record that starts at least in the early Eocene. At present, a detailed knowledge of tomistomine palaeobiogeography is hindered by the lack of modern taxonomic revisions of some fossil remains and therefore by the poor understanding of phylogenetic relationships.

The investigation of the Late Paleogene to Late Neogene species of rissoid gastropod Galeodinopsis in the Euro-Mediterranean area has supported the hypothesis that this genus is an intermediate form between two well-known rissoids, Alvinia and Manzonia. We recognized four species of Galeodinopsis: G. biangulata, G. germanica sp. nov., G. semperi (new name for Rissoa duboisii), and G. tiberiana. The oldest (very Late Eocene/Oligocene) representatives of Galeodinopsis, G. biangulata, and G. semperi, share similar shell shape and microsculpture with Alvinia. This suggests that Galeodinopsis originated from some Eocene species related to Alvinia. The new species represents the first occurrence within Galeodinopsis of a combination of characters very close to those of Manzonia, above all the typical pitted microsculpture. We hypothesize that Manzonia evolved from Galeodinopsis rather than from the genera Alvania or Alvinia, as previously supposed. Galeodinopsis originated during the very Late Eocene/Oligocene in the North Sea Basin. Afterwards it underwent a strong southward shift to the mid-high east Atlantic and the Mediterranean area, during the Mio-Pliocene, and to the Recent tropical eastern Atlantic coasts, where the type species G. tiberiana still lives. The shift likely was due to a combination of climate cooling and palaeogeographical changes. The distribution of G. biangulata suggests that connections between the North Sea Basin and the Atlantic domain opened through the Channel area at least during the Early Oligocene, earlier than indicated previously. The distribution of Manzonia moulinsi supports the idea of a southern connection to the Atlantic Aquitaine Basin via the Rhine Graben during the Late Oligocene. From a palaeoecological point of view, Galeodinopsis includes warm species with planktotrophic larval development that are typical of the shelf environment in fully marine conditions.

This is the first Paratethyan record of a minute scallop species Parvamussium fenestratum (Forbes, 1844). The species was found in Middle Miocene (Upper Badenian) clayey deposits in the Surzha borehole, the Ukrainian Carpathian Foredeep Basin. Examination of other Parvamussium specimens stored in the Museum of the Earth in Warsaw and in the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest revealed further Paratethyan records of Parvamussium fenestratum. These specimens, previously referred to Parvamussium felsineum (Foresti, 1893), were identified in the Middle Miocene faunas of Poland (Monastyrz and Długi Goraj, Roztocze Hills) and Hungary (Makkoshotyka, Tokaj Mts.). In the Mediterranean Neogene this extremely rare species has been reported from the Lower Miocene (uppermost Burdigalian) of Italy and from the Lower Pliocene (Zanclean) of Spain. Research on the Oligocene-Miocene succession in the Paratethys has shown representatives of Parvamussium Sacco, 1897 to be moderately abundant in clayey facies in different basins and the genus is regarded as biostratigraphically important. Data on the distribution of other Paratethyan and Neogene Mediterranean Parvamussium species viz., Parvamussium bronni (Mayer, 1861), P. duodecimlamellatum (Bronn, 1831), P. felsineum (Foresti, 1893) and P. miopliocenicum (Ruggieri, 1949) are reported. Finally, palaeobiological and palaeobiogeographical characteristics on the genus Parvamussium Sacco, 1897 the Early Cretaceous to Recent time span are described.

New material of the enigmatic cosmopolitan ammonite genus Tmaegoceras Hyatt, 1889 is reported from the upper Lower Sinemurian (Bucklandi Zone, ‛cf. pinguisʼ Biohorizon) of SW Germany. It is better preserved than previously described material. All specimens are assigned to Tmaegoceras lacordarii (Michelin, 1835), an almost forgotten subjective senior synonym of Tmaegoceras crassiceps Pompeckj, 1901. The presence of an extreme rursiradiate ribbing style in some specimens allows a better understanding of this genus and provides a hint for its systematic affiliation. This diagnostic ribbing style is shared with some extremely rare Alpine taxa such as Ammonites salinarius Hauer, 1846 and “Arietites” subsalinarius Wähner, 1891. Tmaegoceras is included here in Pseudotropitinae Donovan, 1973. Pseudotropitinae are possibly an early offshoot of Arietitidae indigenous of the Panthalassa Realm that occasionally spread into the Tethys and its adjacent shelves. A phyletic relationship with Late Triassic Tropitidae Mojsisovics, 1875, however, cannot be excluded either.

Ammonites Mortoniceras (Subschloenbachia) sp. are preserved as attachment scars on the oyster shells from the topmost portion of the Albian succession at Annopol, Poland. These oyster-bioimmured ammonites show a closest affinity to the representatives of Mortoniceras (Subschloenbachia) characteristic of the upper Upper Albian Mortoniceras perinflatum Zone. No ammonites indicative of the uppermost Albian–lowermost Cenomanian Praeschloenbachia briacensis Zone are recorded. Thus, the hiatus at the Albian–Cenomanian boundary at Annopol embraces the latter zone. The presence (and dominance) of Mortoniceras in the upper Upper Albian ammonite assemblage of Annopol suggests that the representatives of this Tethyan genus could migrate into the epicratonic areas of Poland directly from the Tethyan Realm, via the Lwów (Lviv) region.

Foraminifera, ammonites, and calcareous dinoflagellates were used for stratigraphy and, together with microfacies, for the assessment of the palaeoenvironmental conditions of the Upper Jurassic deposits in the central Alborz Zone of northern Iran. The Lar Formation (Lar Fm.) in the Polur section is of latest Oxfordian to early Kimmeridgian age. The ammonite Subnebrodites planula and the calcareous dinoflagellate Colomisphaera nagyi have been introduced as new biomarkers of the lower Kimmeridgian in the central Neo-Tethys. The distribution of calcareous dinoflagellates reflects possible dispersal routes along a narrow seaway between the western Neo-Tethys and the Alborz Zone in the central Neo-Tethys. The Terebella-Crescentiella associations of the Lar Fm. represent a low-energy setting under dysoxic conditions in the Central Neo-Tethys Ocean. The benthic foraminiferal assemblages in this formation show a high dominance of infaunal taxa and r-selected strategists. This assemblage is reminiscent of eutrophic conditions and low oxygen levels in the lower part of the Lar Fm. Good preservation of the hexactinellid sponges in the upper part of the Lar Fm. also indicates an oxygen-minimum zone. Three third-order depositional sequences can be distinguished in the study area based on six microfacies. Depositional sequence 1 (DS1) is composed mainly of argillaceous limestone and medium- to thick-bedded limestone, corresponding to an outer ramp-to-middle ramp environment. Depositional sequence 2 (DS2) comprises breccia limestone and thick-bedded limestone facies in its lower part and thin-bedded limestone to massive limestone in its upper part. The breccia limestone facies may be associated with subaerial exposure and reworking of previously deposited sediment during a relative sea level fall. The thin-bedded limestone to massive limestone of DS2 consists mainly of bioclastic mudstone to wackestone (outer ramp). These represent an deep-water outer homoclinal ramp facies. Depositional sequence 3 (DS3) consists mainly of massive limestone to thick-bedded limestone with a bioclastic peloidal microbial Crescentiella packstone (middle ramp). The relative stratigraphic positions of DSs1–3 and sequence boundaries in the uppermost Oxfordian to lower Kimmeridgian of the Polur area show a fair match to the upper Oxfordian to lower Kimmeridgian sequences (JOx7, JOx8, JKi1 and JKi2) on the global sea level curve.

In Egypt, marine Upper Cenomanian.Turonian strata are well exposed in the Eastern Desert. The southernmost outcrops are located in the central part of Wadi Qena, where the lower Upper Cretaceous is represented by the fossiliferous Galala and Umm Omeiyid formations. From these strata, numerous ammonites have been collected bed-by-bed and 13 taxa have been identified, which are systematically described herein. Four of them (Euomphaloceras costatum, Vascoceras globosum globosum, Thomasites gongilensis and Pseudotissotia nigeriensis) are recorded from Egypt for the first time. The ammonite ranges are used for a biostratigraphic zonation of the lower Upper Cretaceous succession in the northern and central part of Wadi Qena: the Upper Cenomanian.Lower Turonian has been subdivided into five biozones (including a new upper Lower Turonian biozone based on the occurrence of Pseudotissotia nigeriensis), and one biozone has been recognized in the Upper Turonian. Palaeobiogeographically, the ammonite assemblage has a Tethyan character. During the Early Turonian, influences of the Vascoceratid Province were predominant with strong affinities to typical Nigerian faunas. This shows the significance of faunal exchange between Egypt and Central and West Africa via the Trans-Saharan Seaway. Compared to contemporaneous ammonoid faunas from the northern part of the Eastern Desert, Boreal influences are much less obvious in Wadi Qena. Thus, the present study greatly enhances the knowledge of the Late Cretaceous palaeobiogeography and biostratigraphy of Egypt and adjacent areas.

The origin of reptiles in the tetrapod footprint record has always been a debated topic, despite the great potential of fossiliferous ichnosites to shed much light on reptile origins when compared to the much less extensive skeletal record. This is in part due to an unclear ichnotaxonomy of the earliest tracks attributed to reptiles that has resulted in unreliable trackmaker attributions. We comprehensively revise the earliest supposed reptile ichnotaxon, Notalacerta missouriensis, based on a neotype and a selection of well-preserved material from the type locality and other sites. A synapomorphy-based track-trackmaker attribution suggests eureptiles and, more specifically, ́protorothyridids ́ such as Paleothyris as the most probable trackmakers. A revision of the entire Pennsylvanian-Cisuralian record of this ichnotaxon unveils an unexpected abundance and a wide palaeogeographical distribution. The earliest unequivocal occurrence of Notalacerta is in the middle Bashkirian (early Langsettian) at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Joggins Fossil Cliffs (Joggins, Nova Scotia, Canada). This occurrence also coincides with the earliest occurrence of reptile body fossils (Hylonomus lyelli), which are found at the same site. Notalacerta is abundant and widely distributed during the Bashkirian, mostly in sediments deposited in tidal palaeoenvironments, and less common in the Moscovian and Kasimovian. During the Gzhelian and Asselian, Notalacerta occurrences are unknown, but it occurs again during the Sakmarian and is widespread but not abundant during the Artinskian, mostly in fully continental palaeoenvironments.

Placoid and polyodontode scales of stem chondrichthyans have been found in the early Lochkovian “Ditton Group” of the Brown Clee Hill district, Shropshire, England and at Talgarth, south Wales. One of the forms is assigned to a new species of Altholepis Karatajūtė-Talimaa, 1997, a genus already recognised from Lochkovian shallow marine deposits in Celtiberia, Spain and the Northwest Territories, Canada as well as the type locality in Podolia, Ukraine. Altholepis salopensis sp. nov. is based on small polyodontode scales with typically three to eight high odontodes; the scale form was previously considered to belong to acanthodian “Nostolepis” robusta (Brotzen, 1934). The structure of other scales formerly assigned to “Nostolepis” robusta has led us to erect a new genus Jolepis for this scale form, which differs from Altholepis in lacking an ordered layout of odontodes. Jolepis robusta (Brotzen, 1934), originally (and possibly still) considered to be an acanthodian, is also known from the Baltic countries, Russia, and northern Germany (ex erratic limestones). Scales of acanthodian Parexus recurvus Agassiz, 1845, and/or possibly from the stem chondrichthyan Seretolepis elegans Karatajūtė-Talimaa, 1968 (scales of these two taxa are barely distinguishable), and of stem chondrichthyan Polymerolepis whitei Karatajūtė-Talimaa, 1968 are also present. Altholepis, Jolepis gen. nov., Seretolepis Karatajūtė-Talimaa, 1968 and Polymerolepis KaratajūtėTalimaa, 1968 are found in marine deposits elsewhere; the British occurrence of these taxa adds to the debate on the sedimentological origins of the Lower Old Red Sandstone deposits in the Welsh Borderland. The geographic range of several early sharks is now known to extend around the Old Red Sandstone continent and beyond.

A new gastropod genus and its type species, namely Ederazyga fanchini gen. et sp. nov., are described from the upper Rhaetian deposits of Lombardy (northern Italy) and tentatively placed into the family Zygopleuridae. The first appearance of Ederazyga is recorded in the lower Carnian deposits of Southern Alps and the stratigraphical distribution of the genus ends almost at the Triassic/Jurassic boundary. Its occurrence in Norian beds of the Nayband Basin (central Iran) suggests an eastward extension of the distribution during that time. Ederazyga is probably one of the Alpine gastropod taxa appearing in this area after the formation of the basin. The genus is possibly related to a group of Early Jurassic, medium to large Zygopleura-like species that are well represented in the Sinemurian and Pliensbachian carbonate platform deposits of the Mediterranean region and in the Hettangian to Pliensbachian successions of the European epicontinental shelf. This group shows an apparent species radiation in these areas testifying to the gastropod recovery following the Late Triassic decline in biodiversity. Ederazyga fanchini is shown to be congeneric with Cerithium? lateplicatum Klipstein, 1843, which is the type species of Camponaxis Bandel, 1995. The definition and diagnosis of Camponaxis was based on specimens that are clearly different, at generic and higher taxonomic levels, from the holotype of C.? lateplicatum. They belong to a distinct species here named Camponaxis bandeli sp. nov. Several species have been subsequently ascribed to Camponaxis following its original diagnosis. Therefore, we invoke ICZN Art. 70.3.2 in order to preserve the unambiguous identity of the genus and to ensure its nomenclatural stability. Camponaxis bandeli is fixed as the new type species for Camponaxis and C.? lateplicatum is here assigned to Ederazyga.

Here we briefly report the discovery of new, exceptionally well-preserved Late Jurassic (Tithonian) fossils from Owadow- Brzezinki quarry - one of the most important palaeontological sites in Poland. These finds which comprise organisms living originally in different environments indicate that the Owadow-Brzezinki site represents a link - most probably in a form of open marine passages - betweeen distinct palaeobiogeographical provinces. This creates an unprecedented opportunity for better recognition of the regional palaeobiogeography of adjacent European areas during the Late Jurassic.

The precise record of simoceratins sampled bed−by−bed is first reported from Mexico (Mazatepec area in Puebla, central−eastern Mexico), as well as the existence of lappeted peristomes in these ammonites. Both Pseudovolanoceras aesinense and the subspecies Pseudovolanoceras aesinense chignahuapense are shown to occur among Mexican simoceratins. The European species and the Mexican subspecies share the same stratigraphic range in the studied sections, yet they differ in ephebic sculpture. Ecological adaptation to neritic seas corresponding to eastern Mexico areas is interpreted, forcing phenotypic deviation with geographic significance, i.e., subspeciation. The new subspecies would indicate stratigraphic horizons within the Semiformiceras semiforme/Haploceras verruciferum Chronozone in the Mediterranean Tethys. A revision of contemporaneous simoceratins in the Americas is founded on a comparative analysis with respect to the European species P. aesinense.

The Prosopidae is an extinct family, consisting mostly of Mesozoic species. Most probably it accommodates the ancestors of all brachyurans in the large sense. The family appeared in the Late Pliensbachian and disappeared at the Early Palaeocene. Evolution of the Prosopidae, and therefore, brachyuran evolution started on Middle Jurassic, shallow, soft bottom marine environments. The world-wide Callovian transgression made possible the formation of bioherms and reefs in the Late Jurassic, creating ecological niches for the rapidly differentiating prosopids. These crabs migrated rapidly all over Europe in the Oxfordian and began to flourish and massively occupied sponge megafacies from Portugal to Poland. In the Kimmeridgian, the area of known prosopids shrank, which has probably been connected with decreasing of the reef facies. In turn, a Tithonian regression in the per-Tethyan area resulted in changes of habitats and in colonisation of the coral reefs. When reef facies retreated at the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary, the favourable conditions for crab development also vanished, so the known Cretaceous prosopids are rare and spatially dispersed. In Tertiary, the closely related descendants of them, homolodromiids, inhabited preferably soft muddy bottoms in deeper, colder waters.
Kraby z rodziny Prosopidae, reprezentowane są prawie wyłącznie przez gatunki mezozoiczne. Z filogenetycznego punktu widzenia, są one prawdopodobnie przodkami wszystkich pozostałych gatunków krabów. Przedstawiciele tej rodziny znani są od późnego pliensbachu do wczesnego paleocenu. Ewolucja prosopidów, a poprzez to ewolucja pozostałych krabów, rozpoczęła sią w środkowojurajskich, płytkich środowiskach morskich o miękkim charakterze dna. Ogólnoświatowa transgresja kelowejska stworzyła dogodne warunki do powstania różnorodnych bioherm i raf w późnej jurze, które stanowiły nisze ekologiczne dla szybko różnicujących się dzięki temu krabów z rodziny Prosopidae. Kraby te migrowały gwałtownie na całą Europę w oksfordzie, masowo zasiedlając megafację gąbkową i są obecnie znajdowane w utworach tej facji od Portugalii do Polski. W kimerydzie obszar występowania prosopidów wyraźnie się skurczył, co było prawdopodobnie związane ze stopniowym zanikiem tej facji. Z kolei w tytonie regresja w obszarach perytetydzkich spowodowała zmianę środowiska życia krabów i kolonizację przez nie raf koralowych. Dogodne warunki dla rozwoju tych krabów gwałtownie się pogorszyły blisko granicy jury i kredy (zanikanie facji rafowych) skutkiem czego kredowe prosopidy są rzadkie i geograficznie rozproszone. W trzeciorzędzie najbliżsi potomkowie rodziny Prosopidae - kopalni przedstawiciele rodziny Homolodromiidae - zasiedlili środowiska miękkich den głębszych i zimniejszych mórz.

The Oxfordian ammonite group Passendorferiinae (known as "Mediterranean perisphinctids") forms a group of perisphinctids characterized by strongly evolute serpenticone coiling and subcircular to subquadrate whorl section, and forms a lateral divergent branch of the main stem Perisphinctidae. They originated probably from Late Callovian Grossouvriinae (Alligaticeras) and spread mainly in the Mediterranean (Tethyan) Province along the southern margin of Tethys, occasionally reaching the outer areas of epicontinental platforms. Their particular morphological features make them somewhat homoeomorphic with Tethyan Kimmeridgian Nebrodites. The phyletic link might be represented by the genus Geyssantia Meléndez, known from the Late Oxfordian Planula Chronozone. Separate biogeographic distribution in relation to the Perisphinctinae might reflect a progressive differentiation of western Tethyan faunas at the Callovian-Oxfordian boundary and at the onset of the Middle Oxfordian Transversarium Chronozone. Their rapid evolution gives them a biostratigraphic value similar to that of the Perisphinctinae. At the turn of the Middle-Late Oxfordian they gave rise to early Ataxioceratinae (Orthosphinctes), which replaced the Perisphinctinae in epicontinental areas, and colonised the marginal epicontinental blocks of northern Tethys. The taxonomy of this group is based upon the recognition of sexual dimorphism, using a single generic and specific name for both (M) and (m), and hence rejecting the use of former subgeneric ames for both dimorphs. A new species within this line: Passendorferia nodicostata sp. nov. from the Plicatilis Biozone (Paturattensis Subbiozone) is defined and described for the first time.

Study of the sections near the Mikhaylov (Ryazan region) has made it possible to improve the infrazonal subdivision of the Middle Callovian – Lower Oxfordian of the European Russia by ammonites. The Athleta Zone is the most complete in the studied sections. A sequence of kosmoceratid biohorizons (phaeinum, proniae, rowlstonense and kuklikum) is established here, as well as infrazonal units based on a phylogenetic sequence of species of the genus Funiferites. A study of the paleobiodiversity and frequency of occurrence of ammonites at different intervals of the section showed that the ammonite assemblages of the Athleta Zone are Sub-Boreal or Sub-Tethyan, while in the Lamberti Zone they are Boreal, and in the Lower Oxfordian they are Arctic. It is also shown that the change in ammonite composition in the sections coincides with the cycles of transgressions and regressions of Boreal basins. New species and subspecies of the ammonites Funiferites allae compressum, Cadoceras (Eichwaldiceras) intermedium, Brightia (B.) lominadzei, B. (B.) progzhellensis, B. (B.) eccentrtica, B. (Glyptia) canaliculata stankevitchae, Zieteniceras rarecostatum are described.

Ammonites recovered from Upper Bajocian to Upper Kimmeridgian strata in a core drilled at Sentralbanken High in the northern Barents Sea are described and chronostratigraphically interpreted. The lower part of the core comprises Upper Bajocian to Upper Callovian deposits of the Fuglen Formation with ammonites of the genus Cranocephalites near the base, and Longaeviceras in the upper part. The overlying Oxfordian to Kimmeridgian deposits of the Hekkingen Formation are thin and condensed. The Hekkingen Formation is dominated by Boreal cardioceratid ammonites (Cardioceras, Amoebites, Euprionoceras, Hoplocardioceras), with numerous Subboreal aulacostephanid ammonites (Rasenia, Zenostephanus) at two levels. The occurrences of Boreal and Subboreal ammonites are discussed in relation to the palaeogeography and fluctuations of ammonite faunas within the Boreal Realm during the Kimmeridgian with special attention to levels rich in Subboreal ammonites whose appearance has been controlled by tectonic and climatic factors. The uppermost part of the succession deposited during a time of maximum flooding in the Late Kimmeridgian is dominated by Boreal ammonites.

The separation of Laurasia and Gondwana, which was initiated by the Triassic break-up of Pangea, continued during Early-Middle Jurassic times. The origin of the narrow sea strait. so-called "Hispanic Corridor", took place between these two continents and connection of the Panthalassa Ocean (Proto-Pacific) and western (Alpine) Tethys gradually started in Early Jurassic, most probably in Sinemurian-Pliensbachian times. Recovery of marine fauna after Triassic/Jurassic mass extinction event was mainly marked by world-wide distribution of Lithiotis-type bivalve buildups. They indicate mainly shallow-marine/lagoon-type carbonate sedimentation and palaeogeographic/geodynamic regimes during break-up of Pangea in Pliensbachian-Early Toarcian times.

For over ten years, the Lower to Upper Tithonian boundary beds cropping out in the Owadów–Brzezinki quarry have yielded numerous fossils of ammonites, bivalves, brachiopods, xiphosurans, decapods, insects, and vertebrates – including actinopterygian fishes and various reptiles and others, all of which exhibit fine preservation of their anatomical details due to special environmental conditions during their fossilization. The Owadów–Brzezinki section is also important for stratigraphical correlations because it contains ammonite faunas indicative of the NE European and NW European Subboreal zonal schemes, as well as Tethyan calpionellids. The whole faunal as- semblage, which represents taxa of many iconic groups of Mesozoic animals, has created the opportunity to establish the ‘Owadów– Brzezinki geopark’, a geoeducation area where the public, and especially the young, can learn about the beauty of the natural history of the region.
