Opis:
We characterize the principal difference between the pairing induced by the kinetic exchange interactions for the Fermi-liquid and spin-liquid phases. In the case of hybridized electrons the Kondo-exchange induced pairing is invoked, whereas for a single narrow-band case kinetic exchange is responsible for the spin singlet pairing. The former interaction is applied to heavy-fermion systems, whereas the latter is employed to the high temperature superconductors. The current situation concerning the applicability of our theoretical models is briefly and critically assessed.

Opis:
We introduce flat systems, which are equivalent to linear ones via a special type of feedback called endogenous. Their physical properties are subsumed by a linearizing output and they might be regarded as providing another nonlinear extension of Kalman's controllability. The distance to flatness is measured by a non-negative integer, the defect. We utilize differential algebra which suits well to the fact that, in accordance with Willems' standpoint, flatness and defect are best defined without distinguishing between input, state, output and other variables. We treat an example of non-flat system, the variable-length pendulum. A high frequency control strategy is proposed such that the averaged system becomes flat.

Opis:
Vernon Ruland, a historian of religious-literary criticism, intends to redefine goals, major issues, and the criteria of the criticism. Instead of ‟proud separate autonomies” of the involved literary critics and theologians he expects: religious-literary critics. Such an interdisciplinary exchange tempts some exaggerations (moments of self-transference are recognized only in the most specific obvious religious examples or − on the contrary − begin to appear everywhere; immature theological criticism treats ‟religious” any literary text of some depth), opens a question of conceiving − restrictive or comprehensive − the notions of religious values and religion (important obstacle in drawing up a bibliography of the criticism). Ruland searches for a comprehensive religious literary ideal and shows as it is achieved implicitly by the most divergent critics (Nathan Scott, Amos Wilder, R. W. B. Lewis, J. Hillis Miller, C. S. Lewis, W. H. Auden) and in the best works (‟a canon of standard works” opens Mimesis by Auerbach).

Developments in nonlinear acoustics are followed from gases to liquids to solids. For all materials the nonlinearity parameter can be defined as the negative ratio of the coefficient of the nonlinear term to the coefficient of the linear term in the nonlinear wave equation. With this definition we can compare the nonlinear behaviors of gases, liquids, and solids. However, recent measurements in solids such as rocks and PZT give a much larger nonlinearity parameter. In this case, and similar ones, one must exercise care. Very large nonlinearity parameters often can be explained by inc1uding previously ignored effects in the analysis. As an introduction, the nonlinear behavior of PZT is discussed.

We provide a brief overview of recent theoretical results concerning the metallic and insulating states with very heavy quasiparticle masses and almost compensated magnetic moments, primarily in the antiferromagnetic state. The temperature dependence of the Kondo-insulator band gap is also discussed.

Opis:
We chronicle the research on the fusion technology of neural networks and fuzzy systems (NN+FS), the models that have been proposed from this research, and the commercial products and industrial systems that have adopted these models. First, we review the NN+FS research activity during the early stages of their development in Japan, the US, and Europe. Next, following the classifi- cation of NN+FS models, we show the ease of fusing these technologies based on the similarities of the data flow network structures and the non-linearity realization strategies of NNs and FSs. Then, we describe several models and applications of NN+FS. Finally, we introduce some important and recently developed NN+FS patents.

In this paper we review the state of affairs in the area of approximation of large-scale systems. We distinguish three basic categories, namely the {SVD}-based, the {Krylov}-based and the {SVD-Krylov}-based approximation methods. The first two were developed independently of each other and have distinct sets of attributes and drawbacks. The third approach seeks to combine the best attributes of the first two.

Opis:
Data on species of land snails and slugs of Lithuania published during the last 160 years are summarized and compared with the most recent information from Poland and Latvia. A total of 83 species of 18 families of terrestrial molluscs have been recorded from Lithuania: 68 snail and 15 slug species. The occurrence of two of them: Vertigo genesii (Gredler) and Aegopinella nitens (Michaud) is doubtful. Data on terrestrial molluscs of adjacent countries indicate that 20 more species can be expected to be found in Lithuania. Two of them would be new also to Poland or Latvia: Vertigo lilljeborgi (Westerlund, 1871) and Zoogenetes harpa (Say, 1824).
