    Opis:
    In some church songs we may observe a three-level representation of the Universe: the heaven above, the earth below, and the abyss underneath. Furthermore we observe there a dualistic conception of the human beings, composed of body and soul. These views are the parts of the Plato’s doctrine, now outdated. In this paper the texts of the church songs, contained in the all-Polish Church songbook by Fr. John Siedlecki CM, published in Cracow in 2015, have been analyzed from this point of view. Many examples of both types of Platonism, cosmological and anthropological, have been detected there. The philosophical arguments for the existence of an immortal soul, recently proposed, turned out to be unconvincing. More persuading are some texts of the New Testament, in which Jesus and his apostles ensure the eternal life for the honest and god-fearing people. The biblical sense of such words as body and soul, permit to avoid the difficulties in the ancient philosophical systems. The author postulates avoiding the above mentioned Platonic ideas in the composing of the new church songs, but at the same time the treating with respect the traditional liturgical texts, always keeping in mind that their ideological sense may be a bit out of date.

    The most important factors responsible for development of an impressive career of Flavius Stilicho were: his family ties with Theodosians’ dynasty, the way he reorganized the Roman army, military victories, how he drummed up senate’s support for his political aims and the balanced policy of using and stopping the barbarian tribes. Protecting emperor Honorius, cooperating simultaneously with pagan and Christian fractions in the senate, achieving military success and defending borders of the Roman Empire against barbarians raids, Stilicho de facto was reigning the state in the name of his son-in-law, Honorius. Paradoxically, the same factors contributed to the downfall of the master-in-chief in 404-408 A.D. The conflict with his wife, Serena, and his son-in-law, Honorius, the mutiny in the army called-up by the reforms of Stilicho, some disagreements with the senate caused by the case of Melania the Younger and compensation for Alaric and, at last, the invasion of barbarian tribes on Gaul in 406 A.D. destroyed the carefully built career of Flavius Stilicho. He didn’t decide to keep his high rank by triggering off a civil war, what differed him clearly from his followers, Flavius Aetius and Flavius Ricimer.

    Opis:
    The abyss is most often discussed from the point of view of the Scripture or human existential experience. The purpose of this article is to show the abyss in the icon where these two aspects are present. Applying reference and comparison methods, one can see the victory of Jesus Christ, which takes place in sheol over Satan and his rebellious angels. The victory accomplished on the cross by the Savior has its continuation here because in the icon it becomes the gate to heaven for the righteous dating back to Adam and Eve, the first parents of humankind. Rich symbolism of the icon Descend into the Abyss from various icon schools allows us to make a broad theological interpretation which becomes an inspiration for further research and the discovery of its message and symbolism, in the dogmatic, spiritual, liturgical, homiletic, artistic and psychological dimensions.

    This paper proposes a new interpretation of Niyevsky’s novel The Devils. This reading opposes the very influential line of interpretation employed in wkolai Vsevolodowich Stavrogin – a relentlessly intriguing character in Fyodor Dostoorks of thinkers working within the current of Russian symbolism and “cultural renaissance” from the beginning of the 20th century. The author argues that this “religious” interpretive tradition contributes to one of the greatest misunderstand-ings concerning Dostoyevsky’s work in that it oversimplifies its ambivalence and obscures one of Dostoyevsky’s darkest insights into the human soul, initially revealed in Notes From the Under-ground and from that time on recurring in each of his major novels. In the first part of the article, several classic Russian interpretations of Stavrogin are examined in order to show their common tendency to morally judge Stavrogin from the Orthodox point of view, recognize his greatest sin in the lack of faith in God and for that reason see before him only the perspective of self-disintegration and inevitable death. The author argues that “religious” interpretations do not explain the mystery of Stavrogin. What is more, they homogenize the complexity of his character and offer an all-to-easy solution to the vital philosophical problem which reiterates in Dostoyevsky’s entire mature fiction and which finds its greatest artistic representation in Stavrogin himself.

    Saeculum in Hilary’s teaching is a term applied to mankind remaining under the influence of sin and evil spirits. Drawing on Sacred Scripture, the Bishop of Poitiers compares earthly reality to a stormy and bottomless sea or to the depths of the sea, and describes the way that saeculum works: the mild and gentle breezes of the sea symbolize the cunning activities of heretics and violent storms and tempests correspond to the attacks of pagans and evil spirits. By portraying the world as a sea abyss, the bishop points out the nature of saeculum, filled with dangers to man’s faith. At the same time, he tries to persuade believers to work on themselves and indicates how to deal with saeculum. In Hilary’s teaching, faith matters the most in contact with earthly reality. The proclamation of Christ, as well as fasting and prayer, are all useful for the believer. Hilary clearly shows that saeculum contributes to the spiritual development of man, even though it carries with it many risks.

    Polish speculative fiction occupies a peripheral position with regard to its English-language counterpart, which becomes visible in the context of the polysystem theory and the genre’s founding texts. On the example of Otchłań by Robert J. Szmidt, a novel from Dmitry Glukhovsky’s Metro 2033 universe, it is possible to show the features of a potential translation, focused on the strategy of foreignization, which would determine the peripheral character of the target text. These features are, among others: neologisms, word plays or references to Polish reality.
    Polskie literatury wyobrażeniowe zajmują pozycję peryferyjną względem swoich anglojęzycznych odpowiedników, co uwidacznia się w kontekście teorii polisystemu i fundamentalnych tekstów gatunku. Na przykładzie Otchłani Roberta J. Szmidta, powieści przynależącej do uniwersum Metro 2033 Dmitrija Głuchowskiego, możliwe jest wykazanie cech potencjalnego - egzotyzującego - tłumaczenia powieści, które decydowałyby o peryferyjnym charakterze tekstu przekładu. Wśród nich należy wymienić: neologizmy, gry słowne lub odniesienia do polskiej rzeczywistości.
