Opis:
Due to their bio-compatibility and non-toxicity, ferrimagnetic iron oxides are suitable for various medical applications. In the case of hyperthermia, the promising approach how to reach desired magnetic properties is to combine more phases into a composite material. A series of samples containing maghemite and M-hexaferrite was prepared by sol-gel method with subsequent thermal treatment where annealing temperature and time were varied. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction. In this paper we focused mainly on application of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to investigate these strongly inhomogeneous nanoparticle composites. Frequency-swept ⁵⁷Fe NMR spectra of nanoparticle samples were measured in a zero external magnetic field at 4.2 K. Utilizing differences in optimal excitation field strengths and in relaxation times, we were able to resolve NMR signal assigned to hexagonal ferrite of M-phase from signal which showed features attributed to maghemite.

Opis:
Currently, new and easier ways of analyzing pharmaceutical drug forms and drug delivery mechanisms are being sought. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technique that images drug forms such as tablets, liquids and topicals and drug form behavior in living organisms on both the tissue and cellular scale. The advantages of MRI include noninvasiveness, variable sample capacity and ease of transfer of phantom results to in vitro and in vivo studies. This review concerns the usefulness of clinical MRI that cannot be understated as this technique provides non-invasive and non-destructive insight into the properties of drug delivery systems. The research discussed here concerns the use of magnetic resonance, spectroscopy and chromatography to investigate selected pharmaceuticals and covers work of selecting drugs and antibodies for modification by synthesis for evaluation by MRI. Modifications have been aimed at improving therapeutic efficacy, delivery, and MRI. Modification conditions such as (pH, concentration, temperature, and the influence of other components present in the solutions) will be discussed to understand drug delivery system improvements and the reliability and repeatability of the results obtained. We hope to explore and expand the scope of pharmaceutical imaging with MRI for application in clinical medicine.

Opis:
The results of systematic multinuclear NMR studies of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (RDX), 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5, 7-tetraazacyclooctane (HMX) and 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) are presented. For comparison of interactions between the analytes and the solvents, experiments in both deuterated DMSO and CDCl3 (where possible) were performed. Complete assignment of the resonance signals for the compounds investigated are presented. Analysis of the high resolution NTO spectra leads to new conclusions about the different reactivities of the N-H protons. The results can be used for many analytical purposes, such as solvent matching for extracting traces of explosives, controlling the purity of various samples etc.

We calculate the lifetime broadening of a nuclear magnetic resonance peak based on the minimal length uncertainty. The application of high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and its extension to detection of the signature of minimal length scale is explored. We show that in a high precision spectrometry test, the lifetime broadening is a quadratic function with energy.

In the present contribution, the attenuation function S(t) for an ensemble of spins in a magnetic-field gradient is calculated through an accumulation of the phase shifts in the rotating frame resulting from the changes of the particle displacements. The found S(t) is applicable for any kind of the stochastic motion of spins, including their non-Markovian dynamics with memory. Depending on the considered system, both the classical expressions valid for normal diffusion at long times and new formulae for the short-time Brownian motion can be obtained. Our method is also applicable to the NMR pulse sequences based on the refocusing principle. This is demonstrated by describing the spin echo experiment developed by Hahn.

Opis:
Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a semicrystalline biodegradable polymer with chains consisting of methyl (CH₃), methylene (CH₂), methine (CH) and carbonyl (CO) groups. The ¹H-¹³C cross polarization NMR measurements were performed on an as-supplied powder PHB sample at a magic-angle spinning rate of 10 kHz. The measured cross polarization build-up curves and their analysis provided information on the dynamics of ¹H-¹³C NMR cross polarization in functional groups with directly bonded hydrogens. The measurements required setting up the Hartmann-Hahn condition, which was inferred from the Hartmann-Hahn matching profiles measured for each functional group. The cross polarization build-up curves displayed an oscillatory course, which indicates the presence of rigid ¹H-¹³C spin pairs isolated from the lattice. The frequency of the observed oscillations is directly proportional to the ¹H-¹³C dipolar coupling constant, which is related to the C-H distance and its value also reflects the mobility of particular functional groups. The values of dipolar coupling constants were derived from splittings in the Fourier transforms of cross polarization build-up curves. The mobility of particular groups was assessed with the order parameter ⟨S⟩ calculated using experimental and rigid lattice values of dipolar coupling constants.

Opis:
Several lines of evidence indicate that exposure of heart to ionizing radiation increases the risk of cardiotoxicity manifested by heart dysfunction and cardiovascular diseases. It was initially believed that the heart is an organ relatively resistant to radiation. Currently, however, it is suspected that even low doses of radiation (< 2 Gy) may have a negative impact on the cardiovascular system. Cardiotoxicity of ionizing radiation is associated with metabolic changes observed in cardiac cells injured by radiation. In this study, we used human cardiomyocytes as a model system, and studied their metabolic response to radiation using high-resolution magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance techniques (HR-MAS NMR). Human cardiomyocytes cultured in vitro were exposed to ionizing radiation and their survival was assessed by clonogenic assay. Changes in apoptosis intensity and cell cycle distribution after the irradiation were measured as well. NMR spectra of cardiomyocytes were acquired using Bruker Avance 400 MHz spectrometer at a spinning rate of 3200 Hz. Survival of cardiomyocytes after NMR experiments was assessed by the Trypan blue exclusion assay. Exposure of cardiomyocytes to small doses of ionizing radiation had no effect on cell proliferation potential and intensity of cell death. However, analysis of metabolic profiles revealed changes in lipids, threonine, glycine, glycerophosphocholine, choline, valine, isoleucine, glutamate, reduced glutathione and taurine metabolism. The results of this study showed that ionizing radiation affects metabolic profiles of cardiomyocytes even at low doses, which potentially have no effect on cell viability.

Series of lutetium doped yttrium iron garnet films is studied by means of $\text{}^{57}Fe$ nuclear magnetic resonance. Satellite spectral lines are resolved and identified in the spectra and concentrations of lutetium in dodecahedral sites as well as yttrium/lutetium antisite defects in octahedral sites are estimated. Compared to yttrium, lutetium cations are found to have stronger disposition towards creating the antisite defects.

A set of stretched isotactic polypropylene fibres prepared with the draw ratio λ = 2.5 at different temperatures was investigated by $\text{}^1H$ pulsed relaxation NMR method and continuous wave spectroscopy. Both, drawing and temperature of drawing influence physical properties of isotactic polypropylene fibres. NMR technique is shown to be advantageous for the study of these changes on molecular level since the shape of broad-line NMR spectra and processes of the NMR relaxation depend on the spatial configuration and motions of the resonating nuclei.
