Opis:
Basic features of narrow optical beam interactions with a dielectric interface are analysed. As it was recently shown, two types of paraxial beams – elegant Hermite-Gaussians of linear polarization and elegant Laguerre-Gaussians of circular polarization – can be treated as vector normal modes of the interface [1]. In this contribution the problem of normal modes is discussed with special attention paid for the case of beam oblique incidence. Excitation of higher-order modes by cross-polarization coupling is described and it is shown that this process critically depends on a propagation direction of the incident beam. Besides the expected changes of mode indices induced by generalised transmission and reflection matrices, the new phenomenon of optical vortex spectral splitting at the interface is revealed and off-axis spectral placements of the splitted vortices are determined. Results of numerical simulations given here for beam reflection entirely confirm theoretical predictions even for beams beyond the range of paraxial approximation.

Opis:
The analysis of normal modes of vibrations was performed for acridine dimer, which has been recently observed and identified by laser-induced emission spectroscopy under conditions of jet-cooling in a supersonic helium expansion. The frequencies and the forms of normal vibrations, computed with the use of the semi-empirical PM3 method are classifying all vibrations of acridine dimer into two distinct categories of inter- and intramolecular vibrations. There are six low-frequency intermolecular normal vibrations which are characterizing relative movements of two acridine moieties in the dimer and at least two of them have vibrational frequencies which are close to the frequencies of vibronic bands observed in the fluorescence excitation spectrum of the dimer. The intramolecular normal vibrations of the dimer very strictly correspond to the normal vibrations of acridine molecule (with a minor modification of the vibrational frequencies due to the splitting in the dimer). Furthermore, the intramolecular vibrations of acridine dimer, as well as the vibrations of acridine molecule are in good agreement with available experimental data (either IR and Raman spectra of acridine or fluorescence excitation spectrum of acridine dimer in supersonic jet). The results of the present analysis are very clearly supporting the previous conclusions concerning the ground-state equilibrium structure of acridine dimer formed under jet-cooling conditions.

Opis:
A new geometry of microwave polarimetric measurements is presented, which realizes a localized plasma polarimetry based on the phenomenon of electromagnetic mode conversion. Such a conversion takes place in the tokamak plasma, in the vicinity of the point where the microwave beam is orthogonal to one of the helical magnetic lines. In distinction to the traditional plasma polarimetry, which deals with the line averaged plasma parameters, the new methodology allows for a measurement of the local values of plasma parameters near the point of orthogonality. This methodology was shown to be very efficient in studies of the solar radio emission and polarization properties of radio waves passing through the Earth ionosphere. In the following the theory of electromagnetic mode conversion is described and conditions of its applicability are analyzed. It is shown that localized polarimetric measurements of plasma parameters in the geometry of the international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER) device would require very high electron densities Ne, exceeding 1017 cm–3, i.e. thousand times higher than those envisaged in the ITER project.

The paper presents a short review of the modal representation and inversion techniques applied to problems of ocean acoustic tomography and geoacoustic inversion. The use of the modal inversion techniques is based on the assumption that the modal component of the acoustic field can be recognized in the recorded acoustic signals. The paper is referred to the main techniques that have been applied so far by the group of the Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics at FORTH and address their benefits and drawbacks.

Opis:
The normal mode solution for the form function and target strength (TS) of a solid-filled spherical shell is derived. The calculation results of the spherical shell’s acoustic TS are in good agreement with the results of the finite element method (FEM). Based on these normal mode solutions, the influences of parameters such as the material, radius, and thickness of the inner and outer shells on the TS of a solid-filled spherical shell are analyzed. An underwater spherical shell scatterer is designed, which uses room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber as a solid filling material and does not contain a suspension structure inside. The scatterer has a good TS enhancement effect.

Opis:
The normal modes cannot be extracted even in the Pekeris waveguide when the source-receiver distance is very close. This paper introduces a normal mode extraction method based on a dedispersion transform (DDT) to solve this problem. The method presented here takes advantage of DDT, which is based on the waveguide invariant such that the dispersion associated with all of the normal modes is removed at the same time. After performing DDT on a signal received in the Pekeris waveguide, the waveform of resulting normal modes is very close to the source signal, each with different position and amplitude. Each normal mode can be extracted by determining its position and amplitude parameters by applying particle swarm optimization (PSO). The waveform of the extracted normal mode is simply the waveform of the source signal; the real waveform of the received normal mode can then be recovered by applying dispersion compensation to the source signal. The method presented needs only one receiver and is verified with experimental data.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to study the two dimensional deformation in a thermoelastic micropolar solid with cubic symmetry. A mechanical force is applied along the interface of a thermoelastic micropolar solid with cubic symmetry (Medium I) and a thermoelastic solid with microtemperatures (Medium II). The normal mode analysis has been applied to obtain the exact expressions for components of normal displacement, temperature distribution, normal force stress and tangential coupled stress for a thermoelastic micropolar solid with cubic symmetry. The effects of anisotropy, micropolarity and thermoelasticity on the above components have been depicted graphically.

The present research focuses on two-dimensional deformation in a functionally graded thermoelastic micro-elongated medium. It is supposed that the non-homogeneous properties (thermal and mechanical) of FGM are in the x-direction. The normal mode technique is used to acquire the analytic expression for displacement components, stress, micro-elongation and temperature. The cause and effect relationship of non-homogeneity and physical quantities is shown through graphical results.
