Opis:
The paper discusses the characteristics of spatial electromagnetic noise generators, as well as the formation of a broadband noise signal. A number of well-known methods for assessing the quality of masking noise interference and the approaches used in them have been described. Approaches to the measurement of masking noise were also determined in assessing their quality. In conclusion, additional methods are proposed for assessing the quality of masking noises, such as searching for correlation of noise in different frequency sub-bands and using statistical and (or) graphical methods (tests) for randomness.

This paper focuses on the problem of silence regarded as an acoustic framework in which uncanny sonic phenomena appear. Some of these haunting noises take the form of sound abject — an unwanted sound of the human body, „neither [sound] subject nor [sound] object”. Borrowing terms from two eminent authors of twentieth-century aesthetics — Julia Kristeva, who proposed the concept of abject, and Pierre Schaeffer, who announced the existence of acousmatic sound objects, I hereby take the liberty of introducing the idea of „sound abject” — an unwanted, uncanny corporeal sound (the sound of the body itself ), uncontrolled by the self and constituting neither a subject nor an object but a sound phantasm that separates from the body and resounds worrisomely. I analyse the cases of sound installation created by Jan Simon as well as the Jamaican dub music production strategies.

The subject of the analysis in this article are three films by Bong Joon-ho: The Host (2006), Snowpiercer (2013) and Okja (2017), considered from the posthumanist perspective. A starting point is Donna Haraway’s suggestion that science-fiction stories should be treated as a tool for speculative thinking. Then, I point to the way the Korean film director demonstrates his critical reflection on the effects of climate change, deepening economic inequalities, the impact of global capitalism and the biopolitical model of the governance. The main aim is to seek out the possible strategies of resistance which enable humans to change their attitude to other species (Okja) and to ask a question about the scope of human freedom, the effects of our interference in the functioning of the biosphere (Snowpiercer) and the results of genetic modifications of animals.

Opis:
Fast, easy and accurate measurement of geometry of numerically controlled machines has always been challenging. With the use of a laser interferometer, it can be precise but it is complex. On the other side, the use of granite reference blocks is fairly easy yet quite limited for many machine types and sizes. Nowadays the improvements in technology open a new way – the instruments based on the detection of laser beam spot position. Those instruments are accurate and easy to use yet, comparing to the laser interferometers and granite blocks, they are sensitive to parameters of a laser source and to changing environmental conditions. In the paper, we analyse experimentally the influence of the type and parameters of laser source on the accuracy of straightness measurements. The most commonly met in practical applications a free space and fibre based laser sources are studied and compared. The influence of environmental conditions on measurement accuracy is also shown. Finally, the conclusions about optimal methods of improving the accuracy of beam position detection methods are drawn.

This paper explores the possibilities of using an acoustic camera as a tool that allows the verification of the correct construction and operation of individual elements of a belt conveyor. Based on the simultaneously recorded components - a video camera and measuring microphones, the sound pressure level map of the belt conveyor was created. The tests were carried out in laboratory conditions and covered the location and identification of individual noise sources. The verification consists not only of searching for dominant sound sources, but above all, of searching for frequencies in the analysed spectrum that should not occur during their proper operation. The tests allow for the identification of frequencies and the determination of the sound pressure level for three noise sources: the electric motor noise, the idler roll bearing noise as well as the noise on the tail pulley caused by belt misalignment.

Opis:
The features of respiratory noises and noises of fins for open-circuit scuba divers, indicating a multipole character of noises emission, are specified in cameral conditions. It demonstrates a possibility to detect low-frequency components of noises of fins with pressure gradient sensor in near field. A possibility of estimating the respiratory rate of an open-circuit scuba diver is demonstrated at distances up to 100 m in real sea. It gives an opportunity of estimating the bearing (time delay in a pair of hydrophones) for the open-circuit scuba diver by respiratory noises at distances up to 150 m in real sea. Thus, low-frequency underwater noises of open-circuit scuba divers may be successfully applied to monitor the safety of diving and to prevent waterside intrusion by trespassers.

This paper presents a method of identifying the width of backlash zone in an electromechanical system generating noises. The system load is a series of rectangular pulses of constant amplitude, generated at equal intervals. The need for identification of the backlash zone is associated with a gradual increase of its width during the drive operation. The study uses wavelet analysis of signals and analysis of neural network weights obtained from the processing without supervised learning. The time-frequency signal representations of accelerations of the mechanical load components were investigated.

The very relation between possibility of writing and sensitivity is a main concern of this interpretation of Miron Białoszewski’s poetry. At the start, I notice traumatic state of writing subjectivity, which I see as a negative affect. Białoszewski’s trauma manifests itself as an acedia in the Leżenia poetry cycle, in which the poet searches for another, positive affective simulation as well. He finds it in the very work of language, of sounds, and of material reality surrounding him. As he tries to revive himself and his writing mainly through the senses of touching and hearing/listening, I use the model of subjectivity described by Jean-Luc Nancy in the essay On listening,  to understand how creative, writing subjectivity works on sensual and language levels.

To develop communicative competence in L2 does the learner need to have the knowledge of linguistic resources, but also of other factors shaping the situational context in which the act of communication is taking place. The elements bearing directly on effi ciency on information exchange comprise all kinds of noises and sound images which make up a signifi cant part of the broadly conceived communicative context. The present paper aims to raise the question of how the use of sound images in the process of foreign language learning/teaching should be made. Among other issues, it addresses the usefulness of various sounds and noises in stimulating learners’ imagination, creativity and skills, as well as in enhancing spoken output in L2.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to carry out numerical simulation of the hydrodynamic noise generated by the flow around a non-cavitating underwater propeller. To achieve this goal, hydrodynamic simulation of flow around the propeller was initially done. The unsteady 3-D flow was modelled numerically along with the LES turbulence model. The hydrodynamic parameters calculated for different advance coefficients are visibly in line with the previous experimental works. The turbulent quantities of the hydrodynamic study and the FWH model were used to find spectral distributions of flow noise for different advance coefficients. The results of the acoustic investigation were compared against other numerical results. An array of 100 hydrophones was used to find the directional distribution of the noise around the propeller. The obtained results indicate that, for different advance coefficients, the highest intensity of the noise recorded by different receivers around the propeller occurs in BPF. Furthermore, it has been found that the noise is directionally as well as intensively distributed around the propeller. Noise distributions of noise are presented and discussed for different regimes of propeller rotation. The analysis of the expanded spectrum (broadband analysis) of noise on the propellers has also been done and the contribution of all parts of the propeller to hydrodynamic noise generation are presented.

Old audio recordings on magnetic tape are characterized by distortions caused by its mechanical deformations and non-uniformity of the tape feed. In order to reduce these distortions the ever-present quasi stationary noise, such as 50 Hz hum, can be used. The article presents an algorithm that uses this noise fluctuation to estimate the non-uniformity of the tape feed and to reduce the distortions caused by that non-uniformity. The behavior of the proposed algorithm and the quality of non-uniformity tape feed distortions reduction was examined. The directions for further research and refinement of the developed algorithm were outlined.

Opis:
Products of Gaussian noises often emerge as the result of non-linear detection techniques or as parasitic effects, and their proper handling is important in many practical applications, including fluctuation-enhanced sensing, indoor air or environmental quality monitoring, etc. We use Rice's random phase oscillator formalism to calculate the power density spectra variance for the product of two Gaussian band-limited white noises with zero-mean and the same bandwidth W. The ensuing noise spectrum is found to decrease linearly from zero frequency to 2W, and it is zero for frequencies greater than 2W. Analogous calculations performed for the square of a single Gaussian noise confirm earlier results. The spectrum at non-zero frequencies, and the variance of the square of a noise, is amplified by a factor two as a consequence of correlation effects between frequency products. Our analytic results are corroborated by computer simulations.
