Opis:
The influence of bacterial activities on inorganic nutrients has always affected total phytoplankton uptake rates owing to the absence of a reliable method that can exclude these effects. The use of natural samples to determine the contribution of bacterial activities has been based on the size fractionation method which, unfortunately, is encumbered with uncertainties, especially because of the size overlap between bacteria and phytoplankton communities. In this paper, the results are reported of an estimation of bacterial activities by the use of inhibitors (antibiotics). It was shown that the contribution of bacterial activities to the uptake of nitrogenous nutrients was highest for ammonium (79%), followed by nitrate (72%) and urea (62%). In a second set of experiments the concentration of ammonium was raised by 5 μM. This was done to avoid nutrient limitation resulting from the absence of recycled nutrients following the addition of antibiotics and the maximum contribution of bacterial activity to the uptake rate of ammonium increased to 87%. It can be concluded that the use of inhibitors is a good method, a reliable alternative to the fractionation method. However, it is important to note that inhibitors can affect both phytoplankton growth and the nutrient recycling process. Our results indicate that the application of antibiotics had measurable effects not only on the target bacteria but also on the uptake behaviour of phytoplankton. Our observations were therefore limited to the period when there was no effect on the phytoplankton, as was demonstrated by a carbon protein incorporation experiment.

This paper compares two uptake rate models, Dugdale & Goering’s (D&G) model and Elskens’ model. The aim is to provide an insight into how estimates of uptake processes, i.e. regeneration and loss rates from both dissolved and particulate nitrogen pools, influence the total uptake rates when the two models are compared. The uptake rates of three nitrogenous nutrients (nitrate, ammonium and urea) from 15-N incubation experimental data were compared. The comparison indicated that the D&G model underestimated nitrate uptake rates by about 34%, implying a significant regeneration and loss rates of the nutrient. Elskens’ model further showed that the loss rates from the dissolved phase were about 40% and 25% for the ammonium and urea pools, respectively, indicating that the D&G model underestimated the experimental uptake rates of the nutrients. On average, nitrification made up about 30% of the total ammonium uptake flux, whereas the sinks from particulate nitrogen and dissolved nitrogen were estimated at 36% and 56%, respectively. The D&G model sometimes overestimated the f-ratio values to about 60% and higher as a result of ammonium and urea uptake rates underestimation. This paper also shows that detritus adsorption, bacterial uptake and cell lysis are equally important processes.

Opis:
Zeolite can effectively regulate the nutrient status in the root zone of crops, thereby increasing nitrogen utilization. However, there has been relatively little research conducted concerning a possible reduction in the frequency of nitrogen application due to the sustained-release properties of zeolite. In this study, 157.5 kg ha-1 nitrogen in the form of urea fertilizer was applied at the same rate, either as a one-time application or as a 3-way split application with and without 10 t ha-1 zeolite. The effects on rice yield, nitrogen uptake, root morphology and soil properties were evaluated in 2014 and 2015. Results showed that zeolite could enhance the biomass, leaf area index and nitrogen uptake. A higher rice grain yield and nitrogen uptake following soil treatment with zeolite could be attributed to a higher soil cation exchange capacity as well as nitrogen and potassium availability in the soil especially during the vegetative period of the rice plant. The addition of nitrogen to the soil as a one-time application or 3-way split application with 10 t ha-1 zeolite significantly increased rice grain yield by 8.5 or 10.7% compared with nitrogen as a one-time application without zeolite. Zeolite addition greatly improved the development of root morphology and activity compared with treatments without zeolite, which contributed to additional plant growth. The addition of nitrogen to the soil with 10 t ha-1 zeolite as a one-time application that can significantly increase nutrient retention is recommended to improve rice grain yield and decrease nitrogen application frequencies in order to lower both labour forces and energy requirements.

Competitive interactions are common in plant communities, but the underlying mechanisms and effects of competition have not been fully elucidated to date. A pot experiment (3 series in 2009- 2011) was conducted to evaluate the effect of a sowing method of spring barley and Italian ryegrass, and different water condition on the nitrogen (N) content and accumulation in the aerial biomass of plants at different stages. The experimental factors were as follows: 1) sowing regime – pure sowing and mixed sowing – spring barley undersown with Italian ryegrass, 2) water supply – plants supplied with water to meet their full requirements and 50% water supply reduction. The N content of the aerial biomass of plants was determined at five phenological development stages of spring barley grown in a pure stand under optimal soil moisture conditions: leaf development, tillering, stem elongation, heading and ripening. Nitrogen uptake was determined based on the N content and dry matter accumulation in plants. Nitrogen concentrations in the aerial biomass of barley and ryegrass varied throughout the growing season. Nitrogen content was particularly high in leaves, and it decreased steadily during plant development. Neither the sowing regime nor the water supply exerted significant effects on the N content of the aerial biomass of spring barley. In Italian ryegrass, under optimal water supply, mixed sowing with spring barley decreased N concentrations in shoots only during tillering. In spring barley, mixed sowing reduced N uptake by biomass, and the observed decrease was exacerbated under water deficit. In Italian ryegrass, reduced water supply decreased N uptake, but the effect of competitive interactions between the analyzed species was usually stronger than the influence of water deficit. Differences in N accumulation in aerial biomass were determined by the amount of biomass produced in mixed stands and the responses of barley and ryegrass to water deficit.

This paper presents the results of a four-year field study on the effect of sulphur fertilization on nitrogen uptake and its utilization efficiency by winter wheat. A two-factor field ex- periment was carried out over 1999–2002 in a randomized blocks design. The first factor was fertilization with sulphur (in the form of sulphate) in doses of 0 and 60 kg ha-1, while the second fac- tor – nitrogen fertilization (in the form of ammonium nitrate) in doses of 0, 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 kg N ha-1. Nitrogen was ap- plied in doses of 30 kg N ha-1, at two-week intervals after the start of growing season. The research showed that sulphur fertiliza- tion increased on average the nitrogen uptake by wheat by 3.5%. The efficiency index of nitrogen fertilization of wheat had higher values after application of fertilizers containing sulphur with a tendency to decrease as the dose N increased. Sulphur fertiliza- tion increased the agronomic efficiency of nitrogen in the range of low doses from 30 to 90 kg N ha-1.

Opis:
The dependence of the content of various forms of nitrogen and absorption of N by cocksfoot grass on meteorological conditions was established in a field experiment. Correlations between the content of total nitrogen, protein nitrogen, N-NH4, and N-NO3 in sward and roots of cocksfoot grass and some meteorological elements, i.e. maximum temperature, minimum temperature, average daily temperature measured at 5 and 200 cm, air relative humidity, cloud cover, sum of precipitation, sum of evaporation and soil temperature measured at a depth of 2, 5, 10, 20 cm were analyzed. Correlation coefficients between the forms of nitrogen in the plant and the above meteorological elements were calculated, as well as multiple regression equations, multiple correlation coefficients and determination coefficients. No significant relationship between the forms of N (Ntotal, Nprotein, N-NH4, N-NO3) in sward and roots of cocksfoot grass and the course of meteorological conditions was clearly stated. The relationship between the content of N-NH4 in sward and Ntotal and N-NO3 in roots, and certain meteorological elements is relatively small and can be characterized by the value of determination coefficients, i.e. 0.166, 0.106 and 0.151, respectively. According to the statistical analysis, the absorption of nitrogen by cocksfoot grass depends to a relatively small though significant extent (R2=0.249) on certain meteorological elements. However, further research is still recommended.

Opis:
The aim of the paper was to evaluate the efficiency of nitrogen from ammonium saltpeter as related to the formulation of phosphorus fertilizer under maize grain cropping. Maize was grown in monoculture throughout the consecutive years 2003- -2007. A two factorial field experiment was established at a farm located in Nowa Wieś Królewska (52o26’ N; 17o57’ E) on a slightly acidic soil, moderately rich in phosphorus. Experimental factors were as follows: (i) chemical formulation of the fertilizer, (partially acidulated phosphate rock – PAPR, simple superphosphate – SSP and triple superphosphate – TSP), (ii) nitrogen rate: 80 and 140 kg N·ha-1; a phosphorus unfertilized treatment was also considered. The type of phosphorus fertilizer did not differentiate nitrogen uptake, but the lack of phosphorus at the applied rate has induced a decrease in nitrogen accumulation in the aboveground biomass, on average by 8%. Phosphorus fertilization at the rate 26.4 kg P·ha-1 was the main determinant of nitrogen uptake by the kernels. Nitrogen recovery (R) from the fertilizers as well as its agronomical (AE) and physiological (PE) efficiency were significantly lower in treatments where phosphorus was not applied. Furthermore, it was found a positive effect of sulphur from simple superphosphate on the AE after the application of 80 kg N·ha-1. The R values did not depend on the chemical formulation of phosphorus in the fertilizer and amounted on average to 74 and 59% for the rates 80 and 140 kg N·ha-1, respectively, whereas for the treatment without P, these values varied within the range 46-54%.

Próby rutwicy pobierano w fazie: pąkowania, kwitnienia, końca kwitnienia i dojrzałości pełnej. Określono plon liści, łodyg i strąków, oznaczono azot ogółem, at %15N i obliczono ilość N pochodzącą z powietrza. Średni plon liści rutwicy wynosił 8,6 t·ha-1 s.m., łodyg – 6,4 t·ha-1 s.m., a strąków – 0,2 t·ha-1 s.m. Zawartość azotu w poszczególnych częściach roślin kształtowała się następująco: w liściach – 32,7 g·kg-1, łodygach – 16,1 g·kg-1 i strąkach 45,0 g·kg-1. Ilość azotu biologicznie zredukowanego przez części nadziemne rutwicy wschodniej wynosiła 312,3 kg N·ha-1, co stanowiło 89,2% azotu ogółem.
No available data on the amount of nitrogen fixed by nodule bacteria (Rhizobium galegae) living in symbiosis with goat’s rue (Galega orientalis Lam.) encouraged the present authors to undertake applicable examinations. In 2004 in a multiyear field experiment (cultural soil) there was determined the amount of nitrogen from the reduction of N2 with the isotopic dilution method. It was possible due to the application of 15N at the dose of 2 g per 1 m2 in a form of CO (15NH2)2 enriched with 12.12 at %15N to goat’s rue and maize at the beginning of the vegetation period. The samples of goat’s rue were taken at the following stages: budding, flowering, end of flowering and full ripeness. The leaf, stem and pod yields were determined and the total nitrogen at %15N was defined as well as the amount of N fixed from the air was calculated. The mean yield of goat’s rue leaves reached 8.6 t·ha-1 of dry matter, of stems – 6.4 t·ha-1 of dry matter, and pods – 0.2 t·ha-1 of dry matter. The content of nitrogen in respective plant parts was as follows: in leaves – 32.7 g·kg-1, stems – 16.1 g·kg-1 and in pods 45.0 g·kg-1. The amount of nitrogen fixed by goat’s rue aboveground parts was 312.3 kg N·ha-1, which accounted for 89.2% of total nitrogen.

In 2010-2012, a pot experiment was conducted in order to assess the impact of a sowing method and density of spring wheat and Persian clover on their uptake and content of nitrogen in different parts of the plants. The plants were grown in the following variants: a mixture, pure sowing, higher density (recommended in agricultural practice) and density reduced by 20%. Observations were performed in the following wheat development growth stages (BBCH): leaf development (12-14), tillering (21-23), stem elongation (31-32), inflorescence emergence (54-56) and ripening (87-89). The experiment included determinations of dry matter in different parts of plants (aerial organs, roots) and of the nitrogen content in dry matter. Based on the results, the total nitrogen content was determined in both species. The data were also used to calculate nitrogen translocation from the wheat vegetative mass to grain, and to calculate selected competition indicators. It was demonstrated that - regardless of the density of plants - the nitrogen uptake by spring wheat and Persian clover in the mixed sowing was lower than in the pure sowing treatment. Mixed sowing caused a more limited nitrogen uptake by the aerial parts of both species than by their roots. No impact was demonstrated of the plant density on the nitrogen uptake by different parts of spring wheat. Persian clover in pots with the lower sowing density absorbed less nitrogen than in pots with the recommended density. Nitrogen translocation from the vegetative parts to the grain of spring wheat between the inflorescence emergence and ripening stages was more effective in the mixture than in the pure sown plants. In mixed sowing, after nitrogen uptake, wheat proved to be a stronger competitor than Persian clover during the whole plant growing period.
