Symbol niedźwiedzia wykorzystywany był przez łotewskich karykaturzystów jako znak Rosji i tego co rosyjskie, ale też w celu kształtowania pozytywnej tożsamości zbiorowej i mobilizacji Łotyszów. We współczesnym społeczeństwie łotewskim obraz niedźwiedzia miał wpływ nie tylko na retorykę związaną z polityką zagraniczną, ale także na relacje międzyetniczne - wykorzystują go zarówno Łotysze, jak i Rosjanie. RUSSIAN BEAR IN THE HISTORY OF LATVIAN CARICATURE Summary The article is devoted to the image of the “Russian bear” in Latvian caricatures. The author analyses its history, meanings, types, and functions. The image serves as a factor of Latvian-Russian relations. The image is exploited in caricature for marking Russian and Russianness; for maintaining and supporting Latvians’ positive collective identity; for mobilization of Latvians.  In the contemporary Latvian society the image of “Russian bear” influences not only rhetoric on foreign policy but also interethnic relations; it is actively exploited by both Latvian and Russian ethnic communities.

Multi-Literacy in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania: A New Research Approach The paper deals with the problem of using different languages of writing in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 15th–17th centuries. Among them there were: Latin, Polish, Ruthenian, Church-Slavonic, Lithuanian, German, Yiddish, Hebrew, Arabic and Greek, written in five alphabets: Latin, Cyryllic, Hebrew, Arabic and Greek. The author noticed that this multi-lingualism and multi-alphabeticism was omitted in Polish studies about history of literature of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He argues that including these two issues in the studies on the Commonwealth’s history is crucial to better understand the muli-cultural and multi-ethnic character of this country. One of the main questions of the paper is about the relationship between a script and an identity. The author notices that comparative approach can be especially productive in such research. He enlists similar borderline processes in use of writing in medieval and early modern England, Sicily, Malta, Cyprus, Venice, Dubrovnik, Moldova and Andalusia. It is illustrated by a few cases of use of the Cyryllic, Latin and Arabic alphabets. The author draws a comparison between the 16th-century literary languages of Spanish Moriscos and Lithuanian Tatars. Both these languages were based on the written version of a vernacular language (Romance and Byelorussian) in the Arabic alphabet.

Obecnie Stany Zjednoczone i inne kraje wydają miliony dolarów na badania nad przyszłościowa bronią i amunicją. Zaawansowanie w technologii wysokiej klasy laserów pozwala na zastosowanie ich do konstrukcji broni nowego typu. Rozwój techniki uzbrojenia, począwszy od pancerników poprzez samoloty, czołgi, radary, do nie wykrywanych przez radary obiektów (samolotów, okrętów oraz pojazdów lądowych) postępuje szybciej niż siły militarne są w stanie zaadoptować go do strategii i taktyki prowadzenia działań wojennych. Wielkie koncerny produkujące broń nie chcą ujawniać rozwiązań stosowanych w nowoczesnej broni. Zawsze lepiej dysponować nowym, czym można zaskoczyć przeciwnika na polu walki. Można jedynie snuć przypuszczenia, jakie produkty znajdą się na rynku za kilka lat. Nowoczesna broń i amunicja będzie niezwykle niebezpiecznym dla przeciwnika rodzajem broni. Nowe typy broni i amunicji spowodują zrnianę strategii i taktyki na polu bitwy. Staną się przyczyną nowego podejścia i wyznaczą nowe trendy w uzbrojeniu. Na razie takiej broni jeszcze nie ma, a przed naukowcami, którzy nad nią pracują, stoi kilka poważnych wyzwań. Laser jako broń energetyczna jesl mało rozpowszechniony. Powoli w roli broni jest już jednak instalowany na platformach powietrznych, na ciężarówkach i w broni indywidualnej.
Today USA and other countries spend a lot of many on development of future weapons and ammunition. Advance in the technology of high-energy lasers allows to use their to construction a new type of weapons. Technical development of new warfighting capabilities-everyfighting from ironclad warships, to heavier-than-air aircraft, to tanks, radar and radar-defeating "stealtlh" - has proceeded faster than military forces can adopt their warfighting opproaches to incorporae the full advantage of the capability. Very big companies, which have produced weapons and ammunition don't want to reveal owned solutions used by them in modern weapons. It is always better to have some news, which one can surprise an enemy on the battlefield. We can only suppose what products will exist on our market for a few years. Modern weapons and ammunition will be an incredible dangerous kind of weapon for enemy. New type of weapons and ammunition will cause changes of strategy and tactic on the battlefield. iIt will be a reason for a new approach and will assign new trends in armaments. As yet this kind of weapon is still in development by scientists. Laser like energetic weapon is not famous yet but it's sometimes installed on air platforma, on lorry and in individual weapons.

The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of circulating immune complexes (CICs) and concentration of haptoglobin, fibrinogen and C-reactive protein in the serum of horses with recurrent airway obstruction and healthy controls. The study was conducted on a group of 14 adult Polish Konik horses, kept in uniform environmental and living conditions. Horses were divided into two groups: 7 horses were not affected by any respiratory problem (control group) and 7 horses had a history of recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) (study group). A clinical and laboratory evaluation, endoscopic examination and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) were performed in all horses. Levels of circulating immune complexes were significantly (p=0.0057) increased in heaves-affected horses compared to healthy controls (median [25th - 75th percentiles]) (3.96 [3.96 - 4.43] vs. 7.46 [5.13 - 11.9]). No significant difference was observed in the levels of the examined acute phase proteins between the groups. Moreover, all results were within the reference range established for horses. The results of this study indicate that heaves in horses is associated with the formation and high level of CICs. Haptoglobin, fibrinogen and C-reactive protein failed as markers of early stage systemic inflammation in the course of RAO.

The city on a rhetorical foundation The article is a review of Jakub Niedźwiedź’s latest book concerning literacy in medieval and early modern Vilnius. The author analyzes the notion of ‘the rhetorical organization of the city’ employed by Niedźwiedź in his book and points out some consequences stemming from the way such notions as ‘text’ and ‘rhetoric’ are used in it. The reviewer also emphasizes the signifi cance of the book as both a statement in the discussion concerning the dematerialization of the text in modern literary studies and as a work that may inspire a number of similar research projects.

The Yam Festival in Contemporary Ghana: Tradition Beyond Religious BoundariesThis article is based on ethnographic field research conducted in the central part of Ghana, in the Brong Ahafo region. It gives a description of two yam festivals performed in 2010 in the small town of Jema and the nearby village of Kokuma. The author depicts the meanings associated with yams in traditional indigenous cultures and vernacular religions in Ghana as well as within the broader region of the Gulf of Guinea. Contemporary yam festivals are interpreted in relation to the old symbolic and sacred meanings of the yam as “the king of crops” as well as in relation to the contemporary circumstances of African societies which are becoming modernised and less dependent on traditional agriculture. A special focus is placed on the position of chiefs, royal attributes (stools) and involvement of people from different religious backgrounds (Christians, Muslims, “traditionalists”). The concept of “sensational forms” proposed by Birgit Meyer is discussed in relation to yam festivals, which are treated here as performances generating a specific religious “style” shared by contemporary Ghanaians irrespective of their religious affiliations.

Images and various visual representations accompany funeral celebrations and a process of mourning in various cultures: in the past as well as today. This article focusses on ways in which burials and funerals are celebrated in contemporary Ghana and discusses various relations functioning between mourning and visuality. Based on ethnographic data collected during fieldwork in Brong-Ahafo region (central Ghana) the author analyses visuals used as well as produced during funerals: photographs and videos made during celebrations, images printed in funeral booklets, invitation letters and obituaries. Additionally a visual presentation of a dead body during the laying-in-state-ceremony is discussed as a symbolic image of a dead person. Funeral images popular in contemporary Ghana seem to be designed as if opposing the concept of death as the end of life. Pictures ‒ abundantly produced and distributed on the course of long-lasting funeral celebrations ‒ represent a dead person as an embodiment of success, vitality and wealth.

This article is based on an analysis of the content of the private archive of Professor Roman Reinfuss (1910-1998) which was being donated to the Ethnographic Museum in Kraków in the year 2010. The main part of the archive consists of visuals, mostly photographs made by Reinfuss himself during his various ethnographic research as well as other visual materials collected by Professor. The visuality of the Reinfuss’s private archive is discussed in the context of broader ethnographic experiences and anthropological discourses. In particular, the author problematizes sensorial dimension of ethnography, relationship between ethnography and photography, Reinfuss’s attitude toward traditional folk culture which is revealed in his usage of photography. There is a focus on correlations between “private” and “public” photography and on the structure of visual experience based on photography.

Recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) represents a serious health problem and is traditionally classified as an allergic disease, where contact with an antigen can induce clinical airway inflammation, bronchial hyper-responsiveness and reversible airway obstruction. Previous studies have demonstrated the presence of the Th2 response in the lungs of human patients with asthma and horses with heaves. These cells are involved in the production of cytokines which regulate the synthesis of immunoglobulins. 40 horses were evaluated: 30 horses with RAO and 10 healthy animals. The expression levels of interferon-alpha 1 (IFN-α1), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin-1β, (IL-1β), IL-2, IL-4, IL-13 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were measured in the serum obtained from control and RAO-susceptible horses during crisis. In all the patients, serum cytokine levels were detected. Serum median IL-13 and IFN-γ levels were significantly higher in RAO-affected horses than in the healthy group (p < 0.001). The serum median IFN-α1, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, and TNF-α levels were similar in both groups. These results indicate a low variability of the levels of cytokines and a high frequency of their detection in serum samples from horses with RAO. Immune mechanisms involved in equine RAO are more complex than those defined by a simple Th1/Th2 dichotomy.

Benthic foraminifera, tintinnids and calcareous dinocysts provide new important biostratigraphic data on the age of the Raptawicka Turnia Limestone Formation and Wysoka Turnia Limestone Formation of the NiedŸwiedŸ crag geological section in the Polish Western Tatra Mts. Foraminiferal assemblages of shallow- water limestones from the NiedŸwiedŸ section contain some stratigraphically significant species, including Haghimashella arcuata (Haeusler), Protomarssonella kummi (Zedler), Uvigerinammina uvigeriniformis (Seibold & Seibold) and Textulariopsis jurassica (Guembel). Sporadic planktonic microfossils, such as the tintinnid Tintinnopsella carpathica (Murgeanu & Filipescu), calcareous dinocysts (Cadosina minuta Borza, Colomisphaera lucida Borza, C. tenuis (Nagy), C. varia Øechanek and Parastomiosphaera malmica (Borza), have also been identified. On the basis of these microfossil assemblages the lower and middle parts of the NiedŸwiedŸ section was dated as the Lower Tithonian–Barremian. Limestones of the Raptawicka Turnia Limestone Formation section represent peloidal, peloidal-oolitic and peloidal-oolitic-bioclastic facies. Limestones from the Wysoka Turnia Limestone Formation of the NiedŸwiedŸ section was dated as the Upper Barremian–Lower Aptian, based on a specific composition of foraminifera assemblages, that suggest an eroded carbonate platform as a source of Urgonian-type carbonate material. The boundary between the formations occurs within a poorly dated interval (Valanginian–Barremian).

A Biography of Barack Obama’s MotherThis article recalls a discussion about Barack Obama’s mother and her biography which emerged during the course of the American presidential elections in 2008. S. Ann Dunham was a cultural anthropologist holding a PhD from the University of Hawaii and specializing in Indonesian peasant blacksmithing and cottage industry. She passed away in 1995 relatively unknown to the American anthropological world and totally unknown to the American public. Interest in Obama’s family made Dunham and her biography as well as her anthropology appear publicly. Even though she was labeled an “uncaring mother,” who was to “abandon” small Barack, a biographical book by Janny Scott published in 2011 depicts a deep and complex portrait of Dunham which does not go along with popular opinions. It is interesting to observe how Dunham’s biography has been constructed and how her family history mirrors transformation of American society and reveals entanglement between private life and anthropological interests

Opis:
Germination of flax seeds (Linum usitatissimum L., cv. Szafir) at 5oC was enhanced by continuous white light, gibberellin A3 (GA3), kinetin and benzylaminopurine. GA3 and kinetin at physiological concentrations (10-8-10-6 M) improved significantly germination in darkness. Stimulatory effect of benzylaminopurine was visible only in the light. Almost no effect of zeatin and isopentenyladenine (2iP) on germination was observed. Possible causes of this differences were suggested.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest określenie kierunków zmian użytkowania ziemi w ostatnim trzydziestoleciu XX wieku, w Karpatach, na przykładzie trzech gmin (Niedźwiedź, Szczawnica i Trzciana). Materiałem źródłowym dla przeprowadzanych badań były czarno-białe zdjęcia lotnicze (lata 70.) i ortofotomapy (rok 2003). Przeprowadzone analizy wykazały wzrost powierzchni leśnej, nieużytków z obszarami porzuconymi oraz obszarów zabudowanych i infrastruktury technicznej a także spadek powierzchni obszarów użytkowanych rolniczo. Największą dynamiką zmian charakteryzowały się obszary poniżej 600-700 m n.p.m. na stokach o nachyleniach poniżej 10C.
The aim of this paper is to analyse the main trends in land use change in the last thirty years of the 20th century in the Carpathians, based on the assessment of change in three communities: Niedźwiedź, Szczawnica and Trzciana. The research focused on two points in time; the 1970s and the year 2003. The sources of information about land use in the periods analysed period were aerial photographs (1970s) and orthophotomaps (2003). The results show an increase in forest cover, the abandonment of land and built-up areas, and a decrease in agricultural land. The most dynamic changes occurred in the areas below 600-700 m a.s.l. and on slopes below 10C.

W pracy porównano wpływ różnych geometrii konturu zaokrąglonego karbu typu V o identycznym kącie rozwarcia i krzywiźnie wierzchołka na rozkłady naprężeń wzdłuż krawędzi karbów. Rozważono przypadki symetrycznego i antysymetrycznego stanu naprężeń w wierzchołku karbu.
The stress field distribution alongside edges of two different infinite V-notch contours was presented. The comparison included hyperbolic notch and wedge with straight edges rounded at the top with the circular arc. The notch opening angles and curvature at notch apices were the same. Two basic stress states – symmetrical (mode I) and antisymmetrical (mode II) were analyzed.

Projekt Informatyczny System Osłony Kraju przed nadzwyczajnymi zagrożeniami (ISOK) powstał z myślą o zapewnieniu poczucia bezpieczeństwa obywateli i ich mienia w sytuacjach nadzwyczajnego zagrożenia. Zaproponowano kompleksowe podejście do systemu osłony kraju, w tym: ochrony przed powodzią, rozpoznania i bieżącego ostrzegania przed ekstremalnymi zjawiskami meteorologicznymi i zdarzeniami technologicznymi (synergicznymi). Mapy zagrożeń meteorologicznych są istotną składową zaprojektowanego systemu. Mapy prognostyczne, aktualizowane dwukrotnie w ciągu doby, skonstruowane na podstawie modelu mezometeorologicznego oraz opracowanych algorytmów, informują o bieżących (na najbliższe 12, 24 i 48 godzin) zagrożeniach meteorologicznych. Mapy historyczne natomiast przedstawiają zróżnicowanie przestrzenne występowania ekstremalnych zjawisk pogodowych w Polsce w formie map ciągłych, map sygnaturowych oraz map warunków sprzyjających. Z uwagi na bogactwo treści map historycznych (wybór elementów meteorologicznych i ich szczegółowych charakterystyk) oraz wnikliwą analizę zróżnicowania czasowego występowania ekstremów pogodowych w Polsce (po raz pierwszy analizowana jest zmienność warunków w kolejnych dekadach roku) autorzy map zdecydowali się na ich wydanie także w formie atlasu. Niniejsza publikacja zawiera obszerny wybór map klimatologicznych, przedstawiających zróżnicowanie czasowe i przestrzenne występowania ekstremalnych zdarzeń i zjawisk pogodowych w Polsce w latach 1951-2010.

The main goal of the paper is to answer the question of what was unique about the use of books in Vilnius between 1522 and 1610. The reason to take a closer look at the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania is the fact that it has always been a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religious city. This observation allows the author to assume that the use of books there could have been different than in other European cities of the time. To find possible answers to the question posed, the author traces the changes in production, distribution and reading of books in the city. The research is based on several sorts of sources, such as printed books, manuscripts and documents from Vilnius archives (mainly the municipal archive, the Catholic chapter, the castle court etc.). He was supported by contemporary studies about early modern Vilnius scriptoria and printing houses (Kawecka-Gryczowa, Topolska, Nikalaieu), bookbinders (Laucevičius), book writing (Ulčinaitė, Narbutienė, Narbutas) and the history of the city (Frick). At the beginning of the paper the author recalls the main facts about Vilnius in the 16th century. The city had increasingly grown in importance as a political, economical and cultural centre of the Jagiellonian monarchy. The central part, divided in four chronologically arranged chapters, focuses on several problems, among them: the beginnings of Cyrillic prints and Skaryna’s printing house, languages and alphabets of books (Latin, Ruthenian, Polish, Lithuanian, German, Hebrew, Yiddish and Arabic), book production, dissemination, storage and reading. The author notices that a significant contributing factor to the spreading book culture in Vilnius was the royal court and chancery. He puts emphasis on the significance of humanistic schools that were established in Vilnius in the 2nd half of the 16th century by four different Christian confessions (Calvinist, Catholic, Lutheran and Orthodox). The most influential one was the Jesuit Academy of Vilnius. This process was accompanied by the establishment of no less than 11 printing houses. Having said that, the author argues that books printed in Vilnius, imported to the city and held in its libraries reflect a fruitful competition between main religious communities. At the end, the author reaches the conclusion that the use of books in Vilnius was similar to other European cities of the time, yet the capital of Lithuania still seems to be a good deal more complex a case. He ventures a hypothesis that the book can be deemed as one of the tools or factors by which religious or ethnic identity in Vilnius was defined.

The text is a perverse melange of historical facts and fiction, immersed in Polish and European literary tradition. From the perspective of 1810, it shows a fragment of the history of two generations of a Polish family involved in political events stretching from the times of the last king of Poland (1764–1795), through the period of the Duchy of Warsaw (1807–1813) and the November Uprising (1830– –1831), with the last episode dating as late as 1962. The axis of the narrative is built around the history of a bear fur coat, which has been used in the family for over a hundred years.
