    The paper is about the idea of a principal town under formation, about the capital of a state and country in medieval Slavic Europe. The author traces back to the moment when that idea appeared, above all in the myths pertaining to the genesis of a dynasty, monarchy and nations, as well as the genesis of relationships between the nation and the land; the relationships which appeared in the chronicles of Russia, Czech and Poland in the twelfth century. He shows a broader historical background of the phenomenon and perspectives to study it in the sources of the later period.

    Opis:
    This article discusses selected examples of English and Polish translations of the myth of the creation of man in Genesis 2, 18–23. Its purpose is to present various translations of the Hebrew text resulting from the polysemic character of the Hebrew terms adam and ezer kenegedo and how they may lead to different versions of the Christian anthropology and male-female relationships. The article presents the feminist interpretations of Genesis 2, 18–23 as well as its two different contemporary Polish Catholic translations resulting in two different versions of the Christian anthropology. In the conclusions, the author points to the role of translation as a factor inevitably modifying (warping) the original text.

    Opis:
    This article constitutes a critical review of the knowledge and theories regarding ritual and ceremony which have emerged in the social sciences. The impetus for this undertaking is the conviction that the issue of ritual has been paid insufficient attention – particularly in sociology. The text opens with deliberation on the subject of defining ritual and ceremony. Subsequently, the theories of ritual which explain existing ceremonies by looking at the conditions under which these observances arose are examined. This article comprises also ponderings on the place of ritual in sociological theory.

    Bohaterowie mityczni zawsze przekraczają kondycję realnego człowieka. Celem prezentowanego artykułu jest wyjaśnienie tej tendencji, poprzez odwołanie do ustaleń religioznawstwa kognitywnego, a zwłaszcza do kluczowej dla tego podejścia idei kontrintuicyjności. Zgodnie z przyjętą perspektywą mityczne zniekształcenie koncepcji człowieka nie ma charakteru przypadkowego i ogranicza się wyłącznie do naruszenia intuicyjnych oczekiwań dotyczących tzw. kategorii ontologicznych. Jeśli naruszenia tego rodzaju mają umiarkowany charakter, bądź to w postaci stopnia zniekształcenia danego wyobrażenia, bądź proporcji wyobrażeń kontrintuicyjnych do intuicyjnych, to zawierające je narracje zapamiętywane są lepiej niż narracje złożone wyłącznie z wyobrażeń intuicyjnych. Wyjaśnia to preferencje do utrwalania takich form jak mit. W stopniu szczególnym zniekształcanie intuicyjnych oczekiwań dotyczy mitycznego bohatera, co z kolei wynika z wyższego stopni istotności wyobrażeń kontrintuicyjnych agensów, nad kontrintuicyjnymi wyobrażeniami innego typu. W artykule omówiono koncepcje kontrintuicyjności w rozumieniu religioznawstwa kognitywnego, oraz genezę tej koncepcji. Następnie przedstawiono strukturę wyobrażeń kontrintuicyjnych i przykłady wyobrażeń tego rodzaju oraz przedyskutowano kwestie związków kontrintuicyjności z nadprzyrodzonością. Odniesiono się także do empirycznych weryfikacji założeń teoretycznych zwłaszcza w takim zakresie, w jakim wyjaśniają one strukturę mitycznych narracji. Artykuł kończy się rozważaniami dotyczącymi ewolucji kontrintuicyjnego bohatera mitu, który wraz z racjonalizacją tej tradycyjnej formy narracyjnej może ulegać przekształceniom w kierunku bardziej intuicyjnych wariantów.
    Mythical heroes always cross the borders of what we think as the everyday condition of the real human being. The object of this research is the explanation of this phenomena by referring to some of the definitions from the cognitivist religious studies and particularly to the idea of contrintuitiveness crucial for this attempt. According to the assumed perspective, the mythical deformation of the concept of human being does not have the accidental character and is limited solely to the infringement of the intuitive expectation connected with ontological categories. If these kinds of infringements have moderate character and appear in the form of the destabilisation of the given image, or are presented in the form of proportional relations of contrintuitive representation to intuitive one, then, the narrations that embrace them are remembered better than the narrations composed exclusively of intuitive images. This is the explanation of the consolidation of such a form as a myth. The destabilisation of the intuitive expectations concerns particularly the mythical hero, but results from higher degree of the essentiality of the contrintuitive agents’ images over the contrintuitive images of other types. The research objective of this article was to present the theories of contrintuitiveness adapted to cognitive religious studies and the genesis of this conception. In the next part of the article the structure of the contrintuitive images was presented, together with the examples of these kinds of images. Further the relations between contrintuitiveness and supernaturality were discussed. The author tried also to deal with the empirical verification of the theoretical assumptions, particularly these ones which explain the structure of the mythical narration. In the end of the article we are provided with the analyses concerning the evolution of the contrintuitive mythical hero, who, together with the rationalisation of this traditional narrative form, can be transformed into more intuitive variants.
