Opis:
In the theory and methodology of sport training there are issues which are extremely important and which are marginal. As a rule, the first kind of issues becomes the subject of intensive research, whereas the second occasionally and fragmentarily are subject to scientific penetration. Sometimes, these extremely important, although not being sufficiently dealt with, cease to be the subject of interest. It seems that the same lot fell upon the extremely important issue which was and still is – the ability of muscle relaxation. Exercises with „...the biggest tension and the biggest relaxation” were used already in the ancient times”. What is this ability? A partial answer to this question was given by a physiologist W. Farfel: „ Relaxation – a concept widespread in sport, at the same time not having a precise definition and a quantitative dimension (measurement). I consider relaxation as an ability of unrestricted diminution of superfluous and reflexive muscle tension.”. Despite the significant progress in the knowledge about sport training, muscle relaxation accounts for a relatively little exploited reserve in the practice of physical education and sport. There are fewer and fewer such reserves, since in contemporary record-seeking sport, more often it is the odds and ends that affect the final result. The ability to relax muscles is not trifle, since according to scientists and coaches the low level of muscle relaxation inhibits the achievement of maximal sport results. The superficial overview of contemporary literature related to physical education and sport demonstrates that the issue has recently become barely noted, though 20 –30 years ago it was a subject of various research works, carried out by specialists of various scientific disciplines in many countries. Taking into account the evident shortage of new information, as well as the lack of interdisciplinary interpretation of the issue, particularly from the point of view of the science about human movement -antropokinesiology, the work hereby focuses on the achievement of the following aims: definition of the place of the muscle relaxation ability in the science about human movement as well as manifestation of the muscle relaxation ability in various sport disciplines. Search for the relationship between this ability and other movement abilities, establishment of the relation between the level of the ability of muscle relaxation and sport techniques, accompanied by attempt to establish the influence of the ability of muscle relaxation on the effectiveness of technique and on the sport success was also carried out.

Introduction and objectives. Since the paravertebral muscles promote dynamic stability to protect the spine, the aim of this study was to verify the association between the acute effect of the stretching support time for the multifidus muscle, and changes in the static and dynamic stability of the lumbopelvic region. Materials and method. A total of 46 volunteers were cross-submitted to three different stretching interventions for the multifidus muscle, being the manutention of stretching time the variation between interventions: 10, 30 and 60 seconds. Each volunteer was submitted to the three interventions with a minimum interval of 7 days and a maximum of 10 days. The order of the interventions was determined by lot. First, pre-intervention values for static and dynamic stability were collected using a biofeedback pressure unit. Subsequently, the sample was forwarded for intervention according to its group; after the completion of the same, data were collected on post-intervention stability. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 software and Chi-square test, with a significance level of 5% (α = 0.05). Results. There was no significant association between the manutention of stretching time and static stability, being χ2(4)=0.812; p=0.949. Similarly, there was no significant association between the stretching support time and dynamic stability, and χ2(4)=1.517; p=0.827. Conclusion. In conclusion, there was no significant association between stretching time of the paravertebral muscles and static and dynamic stability.

Objectives In present days vegetables and fruits provided by nature are underutilized and underestimated. Raphanus caudatus, is one of an ignored vegetable belonging to radish plant because it is not only underutilized by the population but also the researches had not focused to identify its phytochemistry as well as pharmacological potential. The present study was designed with the aim to evaluate bioactive principles along with sedative and muscle relaxant properties of ethanol extract of Raphanus caudatus in mouse model. Methodology In the current study effects of ethanol extract of Raphanus caudatus were observed on general performance and behavioral changes of mice. Moreover sedative and muscle relaxant properties of extract was evaluated at three different doses (250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg) in mouse model using phenobarbitone induced sleeping time and rota rod test respectively. Result The ethanol extract of Raphanus caudatus indicated the occurrence of carbohydrates, flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids as well as tannins. The extract at highest tested doses i.e. 1000 mg/kg produced significant (p<0.05) sedative action. However, the extract was found to be lacking in muscle relaxant properties at any of tested dose in mice up to 60 days post treatment. Conclusion The study shows that ethanol extract of Raphanus caudatus possess sedative neuro-pharmacological potential and may possibly be used as valuable source of bioactive constituents with psychosedative properties.

Opis:
Objectives Anxiety is a negative emotion that acts as a mediator between stress stimuli and emotional (physiological) reaction patterns. The myofascial system is particularly sensitive to stress. The aim of this study was to determine which of the 2 popular methods used to reduce psychophysical tension, i.e., soft tissue manipulation and Jacobson’s progressive relaxation, is more effective. Material and Methods This study was conducted at Gdansk University of Physical Education and Sports in the sports psychology laboratory and the manual therapy room. After performing specialist consultations and interviews to exclude potential participants with contraindications to any of the interventions, the final sample included 90 people who were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment groups. In group I, soft tissue techniques were applied, including the techniques of post-isometric muscle relaxation, elements of myofascial relaxation of tissues, and elastic tissue deformation using the Swedish massage limited to the cervicothoracic complex. In group II, Jacobson’s progressive relaxation was performed. The training consisted of tightening and relaxing specific muscle groups. The experiment was conducted under an ambulatory condition, consisting of a single physiotherapeutic session (group I) or a single progressive relaxation session using the Jacobson method (group II). The level of anxiety was assessed twice, i.e., immediately before and after the therapy. Results According to a repeated-measures ANOVA, each therapeutic impact was effective in reducing the level of perceived anxiety. Furthermore, the level of perceived anxiety in group I decreased significantly more than that in group II. Conclusions In conclusion, both the soft tissue manipulation and Jacobson’s progressive relaxation techniques were efficient methods of minimizing the negative effects of stress. Opis:
Introduction: The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of post-isometric relaxation on muscle tone in patients with cervical vertigo. Material and methods: The study was conducted on a group of 100 patients including 65 women aged 20–76 years and 35 men aged 20–73 years, treated at the Department of Otolaryngology and Laryngological Oncology, Medical University Teaching Hospital in Lodz. The patients were randomized into 2 groups: I – 50 patients with cervical vertigo, II – control group of 50 healthy people without vertigo. Each patient underwent a detailed interview, subjective, otolaryngological, otoneurological and physical interviews, and routine laboratory tests. Neurology, ophthalmologyand internal medicine specialists were consulted for each case. The patients underwent Doppler ultrasound study of cranial vessels, computed tomography of cervical spine and head. Each patient had an individually selected set of exercises taking into account his/her disease and possible contraindications. Exercises included post-isometric relaxation of paravertebral muscles of cervical spine during 2 months. Objective analysis of therapy outcome was performed (before, after 2 weeks, after 1 month and after 2 months) based on linear measurement of active range of motion (ROM) in the cervical spine, muscle strength (Lovett’s scale) and severity of vertigo (Silvoniemi’s criteria). Results: The study showed a significant improvement of range of cervical spine motion and muscle strength as a result of exercises performed. Conclusions: Most patients (82.3%) obtained complete resolution or significant reduction of severity of cervical vertigo both in the objective tests (active ROM of cervical spine and muscle strength) and in subjective reports (Silvoniemi’s criteria).

This brief review attempts to summarize some of the major phases of muscle research from Leeuwenhoek's description of sarcomeres in 1674, through Galvani's observation of "animal electricity" in 1791, to the discovery of Ca2+ as the key messenger in the coupling of nerve excitation to muscle contraction. The emerging molecular mechanism of the contraction process is one of the great achievements of biology, reflecting the intimate links between physics, chemistry and the life Sciences in the solution of biological problems.
