Opis:
In the paper, the slope stability problem of the Kościuszko Mound in Cracow, Poland is considered. The slope stability analysis was performed using Plaxis FEM program. The outer surface of the mound has complex geometry. The slope of the cone is not uniform in all directions, on the surface of the cone are pedestrian paths. Due to its complicated geometry it was impossible to do computing by Plaxis input pre-procesor. The initial element mesh was generated using Autodesk Autocad 3D and next it was updated by Plaxis program. The soil parameters were adopted in accordance with the detailed geological soil testing performed in 2012. Calculating model includes geogrids. The upper part was covered by MacMat geogrid, while the lower part of the Mound was reinforced using Terramesh Matt geogrid. The slope analysis was performed by successives reduction of φ /c parameters. The total multiplayer ΣMsf is used to define the value of the soil strength parameters. The article presents the results of slope stability before and after the rainfall during 33 days of precipitation in flood of 2010.

Opis:
The article presents the alternative use of termite mound soils (TMSs) as full replacement for clay soils in brick production. TMSs from two localities, Jawaj and Sene, in Ethiopia were investigated for bricks production. The TMSs samples contained high SiO2 and Al2O3. The TMSs bricks were fired at different temperatures from 500 to 1,000°C. The obtained mean compressive strengths (σ), 18 and 14 MPa, were observed for bricks made from TMSs from Jawaj and Sene, respectively, at the optimum firing temperature of 700°C. The σ of TMSs bricks decreased as the firing temperature increased above 700°C, while for conventional clay soil brick, the σ increased with temperature beyond 700°C. The water absorptions and saturation coefficients of fired TMSs bricks decreased with increased firing temperature. The TMSs bricks meet the standard specification of dimension tolerance only along the height. All the TMSs bricks made from the two localities were not efflorescent. TMSs from Jawaj and Sene sites can be used as a raw material to replace the long-used clay soils for bricks production as a construction material for houses construction in rural and urban areas.

Taxonomic identification on the basis of wood anatomy showed that 68.82% of wood charcoals from the Early Bronze Age Site at Yenibademli, on Gökçeada Island (Imbros) in the Northern Aegean region of Turkey belong to the genus Quercus, 15.88% to Pinus, 13.51% to Phillyrea, 0.63% to Arbutus, 0.35% to Ulmus, and 0.23% to the Rosaceae family. The results revealed that the dominant tree genus was oak (Quercus sp.), 67.2% of which was deciduous oak, and the remaining 1.62% was evergreen oak. Quercus and Pinus as the most common two genera in the spectrum of taxa may have a link with oak and pine stands on Gökçeada (Imbros) in the Early Bronze Age. Moreover, the evergreen Quercus (sec. Ilex) and the genus Phillyrea, which was third in the spectrum, suggest that maquis and open vegetation were also present in the Early Bronze Age on Gökçeada.

Opis:
In archaeological discussions one may observe two fundamental and complementary aspects of burial mound symbolism – cosmological and sociological. In the first instance the process of building the mound represents a ritual reconstruction of the world’s structure. In the other instance it attests to the hierarchical ordering of the community. The complementarity with regard to the cosmological aspect means that the range and structure of the community transcends the borders of temporality. There is one other aspect, however, which could be labeled as the ‘communicative aspect’. It confirms the symbolic ‘inscribing’ of the dead into the cosmic and social order and their active role in sustaining the functioning and integrity of various spheres of existence. In consequence, the memory of the dead ancestors was guaranteed and the respect towards the deceased was not only an obligation dictated by the gods, but it also remained something for which the living constantly cared. This relative sense of human existence may be encountered in Homeric eschatology.

Opis:
The paper focuses on the question of a mysterious building on the top of Krakus burial mound (Cracow, Poland) which was documented on some engravings from the late 16th and 17th century presenting panoramas of the city of Cracow (Matthäus Merian, 1617; and Eric Dahlberg, 1655). On the Swedish map from 1702 the top of the mound is already empty. The hypothesis is that probably a small Romanesque rotunda stood there. The facility established over a big burial mound resembles the case of St. Nicholas (Sv. Nikola) church in Nin (Croatia) which is an early Romanesque rotunda (triconchos)  rom ca. 1100 AD which stands till today on the top of a prehistoric mound. In Cracow excavation done on Krakus mound in 30ties eventually revealed a negative of destroyed foundations od the rotunda, which remained uninterpreted.

Opis:
This article presents results of geophysical analyses based on electrical imaging of slope mantles with pit-and-mound microtopography developed on the Rogowa Kopa hillslope in the Stołowe Mountains, SW Poland. The use of two dimensional electrical resistivity tomography (2D ERT) to non-invasive analyses of the hillslope microrelief allowed completing previous results of geomorphological and soil studies. The tomograms (inversion results) acquired across individual forms of treethrow pits and mounds can be interpreted according to regolith thickness and its wetness, but also smaller features such as relict and fresh tree root systems detected in the mounds. These features were compared to a general picture of geoelectrical resistivity measured in the main cross-section of the analyzed hillslope. The differences in slope cover characteristics observed on the tomograms confirm important role of the tree uprooting process in formation of some basic features of the regolith and soils, including their uneven redistribution across the hillslope.

Opis:
W r. 1936 Kopiec został wpisany do rejestru zabytków a w 2017 r. rozporządzeniem Prezydenta RP wraz z otoczeniem został uznany za pomnik historii. Jako budowla ziemna Kopiec podlega nieustannym procesom destrukcji, powodowanym siłami natury. Stałą pieczę konserwatorską nad nim sprawuje Komitet Kopca Kościuszki ustanowiony w 1820 r. Komitet też troszczy się o otoczenie Pomnika restaurując podległe mu części fortu. Sukcesem konserwatorsko-adaptacyjnym jest przekształcenie kurtyny południowej (czyli wału ziemnego umocnionego murem, z pochylnią do wytaczania dział) w wielokubaturowe, dwukondygnacyjne centrum konferencyjno-wystawowe.
Kościuszko Mound, built in 1820-1823 by the Polish Nation as a symbolic grave and monument to Tadeusz Kościuszko, is the second significant sub-dominant feature in the cultural landscape of Cracow, next to Wawel Castle. In the mid-19th century, a citadel fort with neo-style features was built around the Mound, considered a masterpiece of architecturae militaris. In 1936, the Mound was entered into the register of monuments and in 2017, by decree of the President of the Republic of Poland, together with its surroundings, it was declared a Monument of History. As an earthen structure, the Mound is subject to constant processes of destruction caused by the forces of nature. The Committee of the Kosciuszko Mound established in 1820 is responsible for its permanent conservation. The Committee also takes care of the surroundings of the Monument by restoring components of the fort. The great success of the conservation and adaptation works is the transformation of the southern curtain (i.e. the earth rampart fortified with a wall, with a ramp for rolling out cannons) into a multi-cubature, two-storey conference and exhibition centre. The Committee also led to thinning the canopy of the self-seeding forest around the Mound and in the foreground of the fort, in order to expose this historic complex. In other parts of the fort, subordinate to the Committee, Kościuszko exhibitions are held, and ultimately the Kościuszko Museum is to be established here. Among the projects aimed at promoting the Kosciuszko Mound with its surroundings as an object of historical, architectural and landscape values - material and immaterial – there are numerous publications in Polish and foreign languages, lectures given in Poland, but also in the United States, France, Switzerland and Australia. The best evidence of the well-established place of Kosciuszko Mound in the Polish space and geography of the Globe and in the consciousness of Poles and many foreigners is the huge and steadily growing visitor turnout.

The mound with situated on it an old manor of Sikorski family was the su bject of verifying studies. The mound is of an oval shape with the basis of 60 x 100 m and plateau of 46 x 55 m. The shape of the mound allows to suppose that it could have been used as an early mediaeval castle (made of wood and earth), mediaeval or contemporary fortified abode. Such suggestions are confirmed by archaelogical and historical sources, The first mention about Leáno comes from 1354 when Leáno (Leysten) was granted to Ditrik von Leysten by the Grand Master Winrik von Kniprode. Archaeological sources found during the research came mostly from the XIII century although there are among them some fragments of hand-made utensils which may date back to the beginnings of the XIII century. Thus, they indicate on the settlement much earlier to that which so far has been confirmed by historical sources. Achieved results do not enable us to determine the character of the settlement unmistakably. This problem can only be solved by stationary investigations which are planned for the future.
